On this World Lymphoma Awareness Day, let’s remember the soldiers

If the pandemic has taught the world anything, it is how important it is to value the gift of good health and live a free life. The fear of getting sick is now even more understandable because it has put everything into perspective. The world was indeed scared by the truth of COVID-19, but cancer fighters and survivors have actually experienced this reality for a much longer period of time.

On this year’s World Lymphoma Awareness Day, the neighborhood joins together to celebrate cancer survivors, fighters, and their families while also raising awareness of the disease. I’m so grateful to be invited and I have acquired so much knowledge about this disease, its symptoms and how it greatly affects the people that have this disease. I also admire our very dear warriors for overcoming this situation and their triumph in fighting Lymphoma.

Infection-fighting lymphocytes of the immune system are where lymphoma, a type of cancer, first appears. These cells are found in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body. Lymphoma causes lymphocytes to alter and multiply uncontrollably. Common symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, chills, weight loss, and weariness. Since these symptoms are more likely to be brought on by other conditions, such as an infection, a doctor’s examination is crucial for a correct diagnosis.

It is one of the top 15 cancers in the Philippines, affecting around 11,000 Filipinos every year. Yet with lack of awareness, authorities estimate a larger number of patients that are left undiagnosed.

“Lymphoma exists”, Jeanne, a Lymphoma cancer survivor, stresses, “For someone who was diagnosed with Lymphoma and know nothing about the disease…if people knew more about this cancer that can actually affect even the younger ones, maybe we could have been more aware of our health (and) the symptoms that Lymphoma can do to our body.”

Such is the mission of Lymphoma Philippines, a non-profit organization for Lymphoma patients, survivors, and caregivers aiming to spread awareness on medically-approved Lymphoma-related campaigns in the country. The lack of information is what inspired cancer survivor Jheric Delos Angeles and his wife Anna Tapel-Delos Angeles to create a community of Filipino patients and their family members in order to educate more people and provide much needed support to those in need, including fighting for better healthcare.

Rhiz, a Lymphoma cancer patient, shares her experience living with the disease amidst the pandemic, “It’s very hard. The agony is double. During the pandemic, going to the hospital was difficult and scary for cancer patients like me. As it is, we cannot afford to get COVID.”

Christine, a Lymphoma patient caregiver, echoes Rhiz’s sentiments regarding hospital visits. On top of that, their income was cut off for a time during the lockdown and they had to rely on their savings to continue medication.

While Lymphoma is considered to be a curable cancer if diagnosed early, access to treatment is a challenge as costs related to the disease can range from one million pesos to three and a half million pesos depending on the hospital and treatment protocol.

Recognizing these challenges, Lymphoma Philippines hopes to continue spreading information and possibly save lives. As part of its efforts, the organization along with The Carewell Community Foundation, EPCALM, KAYA, and The Philippine Cancer Society, also in partnership with Takeda Healthcare Philippines, held a public online event to mark the World Lymphoma Awareness Day, and shared practical information beneficial to Filipino Lymphoma patients and their families. This includes:

  • Mental wellness advice for patients and their loved ones
  • A private Facebook group for patients and their loved ones where they can get information and support from each other
  • Patient navigation that helps patients in their journey from diagnosis to post-treatment and connects them with the right agencies and groups
  • Emotional support groups in partnership with Kanser sa Adolescents and Young Adults (KAYA) and The Carewell Community Foundation
  • Social work services that can assist patients in their journey

“It is an unimaginably difficult journey for patients and their loved ones living with cancer. Having gone through it myself, a strong support system is crucial in the journey and we at Lymphoma Philippines are committed to lending help however possible,” says Lymphoma Philippines co-founder Jheric Delos Angeles.

The F-Word: Three generations of Women ponder their opinions about the big 4

One of the most well-known cosmetic companies in the world, Avon, has admitted in a global assessment that the epidemic had a significant impact on how women, especially Filipina women, perceive aging. Almost 90% of Filipinas choose cosmetics that promote healthy-looking advantages over those that merely make their skin look youthful, indicating that an incredible 76% of them now view ageing as a good experience and not something to be concerned about.

Being forty can feel a little different, even if each woman’s experience with aging may be different. Ayn Bernos, Inka Magnaye, and Agoo Bengzon, three lifestyle influencers, each offer their unique viewpoint on this significant achievement.

No Such Thing As Peaking Early

Being one of the fastest-rising TikTok stars of today, Ayn Bernos seems to make life more exciting and manageable through her content. Now almost in her thirties, she sees getting older as a privilege instead of a problem to deal with. “When I was younger, I used to worry about the goals that I had for myself—getting married or having kids at this age,” shares Ayn. “But sometimes, life has other plans for you and I realized that is okay. There’s no such as thing as peaking early! I realized some girls tend to worry about peaking at their age, but thing is, you can peak at any age!”

Ayn explains that being in her late 20s now makes her appreciate being older because it brings all the life lessons she wished were taught. “We were always told you had to look young to make yourself presentable. But now, what I try to achieve is just to look healthy and bring out that natural glow that I have, which I see in the women I really look up to—if they can age gracefully, so can I.”

The content creator admits that the pandemic has helped her see a different side to feeling confident about herself. “There’s definitely less pressure now, but it gave me time to really assess who I am as a person. I want to engage more people and talk about their struggles—find common ground and open the discussion on why certain topics are okay to talk about.”

New Chapter, Same Me

t is said that life begins at certain ages, but Inka Magnaye didn’t really put much thought into it when she was younger. Now that she is in her 30s, she makes sure she uses her voice to make a better impression on younger women in her audience. “I want to create content that makes women in my audience feel validated and seen, and that’s something that can help them feel more confident when you go and discuss topics like ageing. I want to engage with them with a mindset of pro-ageing, and usually, talking about the basics can go a long way,” explains the voice actor and top podcaster.

Inka emphasizes that goals can be targets, but they are not set in stone and that anyone can adjust, change, or simply let go of expectations. “I struggled to fit a mold, but I later realized that I can just be a version of myself that I actually like,” she recalls. “In your thirties, you have the means to be the woman you want to be, and it is liberating!”

Inka further explains that finding yourself even when you are older is a different journey but that shouldn’t scare anyone. “During the pandemic, I learned how to engage people in a more dynamic way and I saw that as an opportunity to expand the conversation about dynamic topics that women can relate to. It’s an exciting ongoing chapter, and it’s incredible how you can learn to turn negative thoughts about ageing and being a woman into something positive.”

Just a Number

For beauty enthusiast Agoo Bengzon, ageing gives her the opportunity to experience new things. “It’s a genuinely great feeling because you’re breaking the rules of what women ‘can’ and ‘cannot’ do at this stage,” she explains.

Social media has played a huge part in making sure she gets this message across. Having achieved so much already in her life—a growing family, a steady career, and an unwavering online presence—Agoo says she still wants to experience what else life has to offer, even she’s in her forties. “When the pandemic began, it changed my perspective on how fragile our lives can actually be. So I thought, why do I have to make a big deal out of looking younger when I can just look beautiful in my own terms and age?” she asks.

The beauty expert insists that women shouldn’t be afraid of ageing but rather embrace it. “It’s an inevitable passage of life, and with proper skin care you become one, not only with your looks, but also with your health. It’s definitely an investment and when you put in the work, you get the results. It shouldn’t be a chore, and if you do it right, you can heal from within.”

The Big Shift

Ayn, Inka, and Agoo, as different as they are, all agree that being the best version of yourself can be achieved at any age, even when you get older.

According to the global study by Avon, most women agree that being in their forties has changed what they strive for: from having it all to having enough.

Turns out, 76% of women in their forties do not prioritize being on top of the hierarchy anymore, but rather defining “success” as creating a balance between what they work with and how they want to live. More than half agree that feeling powerful doesn’t necessarily mean having enough money to spend, but having enough self-confidence to just be true to oneself.

With more women prioritizing having healthier-looking skin than looking young, Avon developed and launched the Anew Renewal Activating Serum, formulated with world-exclusive and ground-breaking ProtinolTM technology that offers seven skin benefits in just seven days, allowing women all over the world to embrace ageing and future-proof their skin.

The Anew Renewal Activating Serum can inspire women of all ages to be their most genuine selves, just as Ayn, Inka, and Agoo, thanks to a proprietary and professional composition that ensures faster results.

With the disco-pop smash “WYAT,” P-Pop leaders SB19 solidify their position as a rising powerhouse on the world stage

SB19, a five-piece boy band from the Philippines, soars even higher as their current hit “WYAT”   continues to gain popularity both domestically and overseas.

In less than a week, the disco-pop track has peaked at No. 1 on iTunes Chart in several countries and territories, including the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Qatar, and UAE. It has also charted in 9 countries outside the country: No. 2 in Bahrain and Antigua & Barbuda, No. 4 in Saudi Arabia, No. 8 in New Zealand, No. 20 in Canada and Cambodia, No. 54 in Azerbaijan, No. 55 in Malaysia, No. 70 in the US, and No. 74 worldwide.

The retro-modern tune, which documents the hitmaking quintet’s efforts to reconnect after a tumultuous phase in their personal lives, further cements their status as a global powerhouse. In a recent article by Billboard Magazine, SB19 gained acclaim for their vision to “push the country’s current pop renaissance” to a bigger, broader level. Pop culture critic Jeff Benjamin writes, “With its wider pop ambitions thanks to an undeniable chorus and multiple visual access points thanks to the video and styling, WYAT (Where You At) puts SB19 in the best position to grasp the international spotlight.”

To date, “WYAT” has amassed more than a million views on YouTube in less than 3 days, trending as high as No. 4 on the platform upon its release. Over at Twitter, the song has trended at No. 1 on Trending Topics Philippines, and No. 2 Worldwide, maintaining its impressive stats for days.

Lead rapper and sub-vocalist Josh credits the success of the envelope-pushing single to A’TIN—the fandom responsible for ensuring their mercurial rise to commercial prominence. “We’re very thankful and overwhelmed, especially to our A’TIN. We didn’t expect it to top in various charts not only in the Philippines, but different parts of the world. This was truly unexpected as we haven’t been around for a while. Hopefully, this release isn’t the only one that will turn out successful, but the tour as well.”

To further promote the beginning of their new music era via “WYAT,” the P-Pop phenoms are set to embark on their biggest local and international tour to date. WYAT [Where You At] Tour kicks off on their sold-show concert at Araneta Coliseum on September 17, 2022, to be followed by a series of shows in Clark, Cebu, Davao and more. In the following months, the tour extends globally as SB19 heads to multiple countries – US, UAE, and Singapore to name a few. International A’TIN can expect SB19 to drop by their city starting October 2022.

When asked about what to expect on their upcoming global tour, main vocalist and dancer Stell confirms that music listeners will be seeing a different SB19 this time around. “The same passion is there, the same dedication is there, but we’re just going to give more for this tour. Like we usually do, we try to level up and improve every time.”

Justin, a sub vocalist and the creative director of WYAT, stressed the rigor of their preparations for raising the bar in terms of quality. “This is the first time that dancing and voice teachers have assisted us in getting ready for a concert. So the enhancement of our singing and dancing abilities is something the fans can anticipate.”

A must try scrumptious delicacies from Salmon HQ!

Lately, I’m looking for foods that will definitely suit my taste and would like to try scrumptious delicacies, but a big thanks to Salmon Hq for giving me a taste of delight from their amazing foods. I’m truly satisfied and out of words, especially their Salmon Cake. It’s not only amazingly satisfying because of its taste but also because of its creative presentation and designs.

My family also loves Salmon Hq for its high quality products and for its high end taste. My niece even said it’s his new favorite, aside from its attractive colors and it also offers a distinctive flavor and it offers a variety of Sushi bake pans too. My mom also said that the Salmon Cake doesn’t smell fishy, and tastes fresh, which she appreciates. My nephew also added that he likes it and there is spiciness in some of the pieces but it compliments the overall taste. He will surely add it to his new favorites. The presentation definitely stands out! I indulged in these fresh salmon slices, which tasted incredibly well and delicious.

Sushi Bake pans from Salmon HQ are excellent! With ample portions of fish and other seasonings, each gives a distinctive flavor. Salmon HQ’s sushi bake pans include fish meat throughout the entire pan, unlike other sushi bake pans that are largely filled with Japanese rice. Kani, Shrimp, Tuna, and Scallops are all visible in bits and slices.

For individuals who enjoy seafood meals and are interested in trying out new recipes at home, Salmon HQ is a great resource. You might give your relatives and friends the salmon cake and sushi bake pans as a wonderfully thoughtful present!

For more information about Salmon HQ, you can visit their social media accounts, facebook and instagram.
