The Best of Anime 2023 Highlights Japan’s Unique Culture

This reunion is huge! The Best of Anime (BOA), which had to take a three-year break due to the pandemic, is returning in 2023 with a fury. The Anime Idol Dance Battle, Anime Sing-Off, All-Star Cosplay Competition, and Lolita Fashion Show are just a few of the spectacular events that BOA will be hosting this year. These events will feature special guests, performances by fan favorite cosplayers, and more.

Without merchandising, an anime event is obviously incomplete, so don’t forget to stop by the stores and pick up some manga or comics! If you’ve never heard of cosplay, it’s a concept that combines the words “costume” and “play” and describes activities involving dressing up or acting as a character from anime, manga, or any other type of media. Cosplayers spend all of their time thinking, designing their exquisite costumes, and developing their own definitions of the characters rather than just dressing as them. Cosplayers from all over the Philippines will congregate at BOA for one of the largest cosplay events in the country to display their incredible creations and celebrate this art form while having a great time. Naturally, BOA is not just for cosplayers. Everyone who enjoys cosplay, anime, manga, and Japanese culture is welcome at the event!

The Manila Office of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is thrilled to support this event. Both groups will be present at BOA to educate attendees about the unique facets of Japanese culture and to give fun activities and educational materials about Japan.

The Best of Anime 2023: The Reunion is a must-see if you enjoy Japanese culture, anime, manga, cosplay, and other forms of Japanese pop culture. On September 16, stop by the SM Mall of Asia Complex’s SMX Convention Center for an anime extravaganza!

September Fever will promote regional independent music from the Philippines with its “Music Talks” and “Showcase Festival” programming

September Fever, a two-day event that shines a spotlight on the local indie music scenes in the Philippines, returns with an electric twist.

Now in its sixth year, the event changes format to become a Music Talks and Showcase Festival, improving its programming with a more grassroots-leaning, pro-independent music approach and giving aspiring and self-sustaining musicians the chance to learn the ins and outs of the business from important resource speakers.

September Fever Festival Director Karl Lucente explains, “In a nutshell, this year’s edition of September Fever Music Festival is a dynamic blend of electrifying performances, informative discussions, and a strong sense of community. It’s a moment when music takes center stage, artists shine, and audiences come together to celebrate the power of creativity and the love of music.”

Day 1: Music Talks and Networking Night

Music Talks, a new segment that was introduced by September Fever this year, is designed to empower and educate the participants on the crucial aspects of the industry. Curated by The Rest Is Noise PH, the forum will cover four main topics and has invited speakers from the scene to discuss the nitty-gritty of DIY ethos with tried-and-tested methods to communicate one’s music brand: Music Marketing and Branding (Ian Urrutia from The Rest is Noise PH and NYOU Consultancy); Music PR and Media Pitching (MC Galang from The Rest is Noise PH and AXEAN Festival); Artist Perspective: Touring Local (Mich Paclioga of Loop PH); and Music Production (Tim Marquez of One Click Straight).

“Beyond the performances, the festival is now introducing a series of engaging music talks,” shares Karl Lucente. “These talks feature industry experts who share valuable insights and advice, particularly for those embarking on their musical journey. From practical tips to behind-the-scenes stories, these discussions provide a wealth of knowledge that can guide aspiring musicians and enthusiasts alike.”

From music marketing and branding strategies to navigating the complexities of music production, these guest speakers will share practical insights and valuable tips that can truly make a difference in one’s musical journey. “Additionally, they’ll shed light on touring in our own land from the artist’s perspective, providing a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make a mark on the global stage,” Lucente reveals.

Following ‘Music Talks,’ the event seamlessly transitions into an insightful Roundtable Discussion that provides invaluable expertise on industry-related topics pertaining to the promotion of local artists. This discourse also proposes the unification of production teams from diverse regions, forming the foundation for September Fever’s 2024 Regional Caravan. Esteemed music producers, production leaders, and industry experts gather to chart a path that transports VisMin’s artists nationwide while championing the indie music movement—a convergence of creative energies where innovation meets collaboration, shaping the future of VisMin’s indie music scene. The Roundtable Discussion will be attended by various professionals in the Philippine music scene: KC Salazar of Indie CDO (Cagayan de Oro); J Martino “Bobbi” Olvido of John Bottles (Cebu); Sandy Kiamko of Holodeck (Davao); Philip Biboso of Southlab (Koronadal); and Josh Alipe of Sapphire (Cebu).

Day 1 is then capped off with a Mixer/Networking Night that aims to connect the press, industry leaders, musicians, entrepreneurs, creatives, and VIP attendees with the goal of fostering meaningful collaborations and opportunities for the artists. Cebu-based rising artists Lolita Grey and Franciskoe will be performing, followed by a DJ set by the Baihaus spinners.

Day 2: Showcase Festival

While Music Talks lays the groundwork for aspiring musicians in the local indie scene, Day 2 presents a celebration of music excellence featuring some of the most notable names in the Philippine music scenes from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—be it independent, mainstream, or anything in between.

This year’s September Fever Music Festival artist lineup consists of Cebuano acts Coloura, Kali Hoods, Tomorrow For Sure, Renzo Sy, Sansette, and Wonggoys. They are also joined by guest acts from all over the Philippines: Aira Casti, KRNA, Loner, One Click Straight, Oh, Flamingo!, The Itchyworms, and DJ Love.

As evidenced by the broad and diversified roster spanning various parts of the nation, Lucente underlines that the showcase format’s curation attempts to highlight the vibrant tapestry of the Philippine music landscape. “This comprehensive approach blends education, entertainment, and cultural exchange, ensuring attendees enjoy the performances while gaining enriching insights for their own musical pursuits,” he continues.

The alliance of The Rest is Noise PH, Filla Killa, Black Straw Prod Co, and Missing Scene makes September Fever Music Festival VI feasible. On September 22 and 23, respectively, Draft Punk and From Here in Cebu City will host the music discourse and showcase event.

‘Befriending My Tears’ concert by Clara Benin will take place in September

Clara Benin

On Friday, September 22, 2023 (starting at 8 p.m.), Clara Benin performed a significant concert at the Music Museum to mark the release of her second studio album.

The event, aptly titled “befriending my tears, a Clara Benin concert,” charts Benin’s development as a musician as she learns to accept herself and find healing while exhibiting her artistic maturity gained through years of practice and development.

“Headlining my concert at the Music Museum feels incredibly exciting and a bit nerve-wracking,” the Filipino singer-songwriter shares. “I think that the venue’s classic charm and quality acoustics make it the perfect place to perform my new album! I really want my fans to be comfortable and fully immersed in my music, so choosing a seated venue was very important to me.”

Following a two-night engagement at Teatrino Greenhills in 2016, “befriending my tears, a Clara Benin concert” is her second significant performance. This time, the Parallel Universe performer will play all the songs from her recently released album in addition to crowd favorites from her back catalog.

“I haven’t performed a very long set in a while,” Benin explains. “You can expect to hear all the new songs from my album and, of course, some old favorites.”

A tribute to an album that honors Benin’s newfound artistry and emotional strength, don’t miss your chance to be part of this show-stopping concert.

CNCA Media Concepts Inc. is presenting “befriending my tears, a Clara Benin concert,” in collaboration with Sony Music Entertainment and GNN Entertainment Productions. Soon, tickets can be purchased from Ticketworld or Music Museum.

Release of Miley Cyrus’ pensive new song, “Used To Be Young”

The song “Used To Be Young” by Miley Cyrus has been released, and you can listen to it and watch the video here. When discussing “Used To Be Young,” Miley explains that the song is about celebrating our future selves while still honoring who we have been and who we are. When I think back on my past, I feel proud, and when I consider the future, I feel optimistic. I’m appreciative of my loyal fans who help me realize my goals every day. I genuinely appreciate the consistency of your steadfast support. The song is for you.

In regards to the video, Miley said, “It’s really emotional because I’m kind of like a little version of my mom and I could see her inside the camera using a technology where I could livestream with my mom from inside the camera. We could see each other, and when she danced, it made me cry, laugh, and feel so many other real emotions. I believe this is allowing people to experience authentic emotion, which I don’t think we often see these days.

In celebration of the release of “Used To Be Young”, Miley shared stories and insights from the many chapters of her life within the TV special event Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions). Reimagined from the version which originally aired on Disney+, the special features a brand-new interview as well as music from her latest release Endless Summer Vacation and aired on ABC just hours before the release of “Used To Be Young”. The new, reimagined special is now streaming on Hulu.

“Used To Be Young” is Miley’s first new music offering since the release of her critically and commercially acclaimed album Endless Summer Vacation which featured her hit single “Flowers” and twelve additional tracks. A true worldwide smash, “Flowers” spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100  – a personal best for Miley. “Flowers” was #1 on US Pop Radio for 10 weeks and is the fastest running song in nearly a decade to achieve the position. “Flowers” has streamed four billion times and was the fastest song in history to hit 500 million streams on Spotify. It’s officially the longest running UK #1 single by a female solo artist.

The release of “Used To Be Young ” also coincides with September’s 10th anniversary of Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz, a 3x Platinum album. Bangerz was a landmark album that gave rise to beloved original classics including “Wrecking Ball,” “We Can’t Stop,” and “Adore You.” To honor the anniversary, a limited-edition vinyl with redesigned packaging that includes never-before-seen images and the bonus track “23” with Mike WiLL Made-It will be released. J-Hoon, a producer and rapper who travels the world, records life in Hong Kong on his second hip-hop album, Noodles II

J-Hoon, a beatsmith and rapper residing in Hong Kong, makes a comeback with the release of his sophomore album, Noodles II. He is well-known for his critically lauded work as an experimental hip-hop producer and as the drummer for renowned Filipino bands Kjwan and Kapatid.

In his 14-track album, J-Hoon chronicles a decade of seeing social unrest, disorder, and dread in his native Hong Kong—a place that had until recently struggled to maintain some degree of independence. As he travels back and forth between Hong Kong and several locations/cities kilometers from his home, the multi-hyphenate shares his personal insights on life and culture in general on the varied, hip-hop-driven album.

“Lyrically, it’s a collection of stories, commentaries, and musings about my experiences living in Hong Kong,” said J-Hoon. “You could say that it’s my love letter to the bustling city, a poetic unravelling of its beautiful and ugly side amidst the crumbling terror of political conflict. It’s also diarist in tone and very much contemplative; I didn’t know that I would be this brave to open up about my encounters in life, where stories and emotions sometimes get the best of me. Writing, for the most part, is cleansing and healing, and I really had a great time doing this exercise in my convenient time.”

J-Hoon’s more mature perspective on hip-hop, boom-bap, jazz, trap, neo-soul, IDM, and electronic music is on display in Noodles II. In comparison to his debut album, there is a looser vibe to his musicality, and the tracks are clearly more out of control. Noodles II’s talent for intimacy and free-spirited energy, which explores music from various genres, eras, and locations in a more playful manner, is what makes it an appealing album.

“This time around, I moved on to Ableton and MPD from AKAI,” shares the multi-cultural hip-hop head. “The approach is very much different from my debut as I’m more inclined to embrace less complex structures, and more of that classic hip-hop format. Also, I am playing real keys in some songs in this album, so that’s new. The overall vibe is reminiscent of the kind of analog and lo-fi hip-hop that I grew up with. But instead of making something more polished, I’ve tried to retain that raw, carefree attitude in this album.”

Noodles II follows the format of Noodles I, J-Hoon’s debut album released more than a decade ago. His sophomore outing features collaborations with several Asian producers, including Manila’s very own Chi Capulong and Justin De Guzman (JDG), Guangzhou’s Pete Chen, and Seoul’s Noden and Chillingcat. J-Hoon also collaborated with rappers and MCs from different parts of the region, like Guangzhou’s Rebelman, Kuala Lumpur’s Noyz134 and Hour Tan, Tokyo’s So Wada, Hong Kong’s Mattforce, YoungQueenz, and MouseFx from SensiLion.

As J-Hoon describes the collaborative nature of Noodles II, “in a way, all these experiences and characters constitute a bowl of Noodles where you have the broth and noodles, but it also has various ingredients, cultures, and sauces coming together to bring in a new but familiar flavor.”

Last month, J-Hoon released the soulful jam “Lei Ho Leng,” where he raps about chasing perfection at the expense of tarnishing the light in one’s heart or what is known as “real” beauty. Over soulful keys and dusty, vintage grooves, the Hong Kong-based rapper-producer delivers a bop of sumptuous subtlety and class. Other highlights in the album include “Paradise,” a song written during a tumultuous period in his life living in a troubled city while moving places; the Yehaiyahan-featured track “Reality,” which serves as a reflection of our realities across different places and continents; and the jazzy “Modern Li Bai,” which is a homage to the legendary poet of the same name.

“Noodles II” track list

2. War feat Noyz 134/ Hour Tan

3. Modern Li Bai (remix)  feat MattForce & YoungQueenz

Sponge Cola’s ninth studio album, Hometown, Part 2, seeks connectivity in uncertain times

Sponge Cola

Sponge Cola, a Filipino alt-rock band, has released their ninth studio album, Hometown, Part 2, via Sony Music Entertainment.

The four-piece band’s most recent album serves as an essential illustration of how music can be a therapeutic channel for expression and healing, embracing the anthemic immediacy of their 2022 outing with greater sweetness and moderation. The band also examines themes of overcoming adversity, resiliency, and unfulfilled relationships in the new album. Additionally, it continues the band’s full-length album, Hometown, which was published in December 2022.

As lead guitarist Armo Armovit describes it, Hometown, Part 2 is all about finding connection in uncertain times. “We explored new ways of expressing familiar feelings with renewed perspectives incorporating different production elements, arrangement choices, and improved approaches to performance.”

The term also speaks for itself, continuing one’s narrative in a manner similar to returning home after a long trip and staying an extra weekend to reset. On the other hand, the members’ passion with K-drama and documentaries as well as their personal first-hand accounts of actual occurrences served as inspiration for the record’s lyrics.

Drawing a lot of inspiration from pop and electronic elements, the 19-track album is produced by constant collaborator Joey Santos of Love One Another Studios, who has worked with some of the biggest and most underrated Philippine acts, including Ang Bandang Shirley, syd hartha, Coeli, and more.

Armo explains, “Joey Santos did a great job crafting the treatment for songs and dressing them in colors and styles that best express the message. The process was very organic and natural.”

Hometown, Part 2 is accompanied by the release of its focus track, “So Close,” which features pop singer Morissette. The song was specifically penned by Yael Yuzon, and tackles the story of two people who have built a deep connection over time, but whose relationship never really progressed into something that could last a lifetime.

It’s a song that took me 20 years to write,” shares vocalist and guitarist Yael Yuzon. “Inspired by Dead Stars by Paz Marquez Benitez and The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, So Close talks about the possibility of a mirage in our poetic memory, a ‘what if’ that may have been nothing more than a light radiating from a dead star. We might just be romanticizing things.”

Other songs in the album include previous releases “Labis-labis,” a soaring tune that puts a uniquely captivating but relatable spin on the ‘love song’ format; “Hometown,” a grungy pop track with electronic textures and a catchy chorus; and “Siguro nga,” a pop-rock ballad based on a character study of a popular K-drama character.

Track list:

1. Hometown

2.  Alamat (MLBB 5th Anniversary Theme)

3. Kung Ako ang Pumiling Tapusin Ito

4. Lumipas Ang Tag-araw

5. Laman Ng Panaginip

6. Labis-Labis

7. Siguro Nga

8. JAIRAH

9. Kung May Oras Ka

10. Signal #4

11. So Close (feat. Morissette)

12. Champions

13. In the End

14. Labis-Labis – Acoustic

15. Kung Ako ang Pumiling Tapusin Ito (Remix) (feat. Matthaios and Clien of ALLMO$T)

16. Kung Ako ang Pumiling Tapusin Ito – Acoustic

17. Siguro Nga – Acoustic (feat. Kai Honasan)

18. Siguro Nga (TMAC’s lo-fi Mix)

19. Laman ng Panaginip – Acoustic

Sony Music Entertainment has released Sponge Cola’s Hometown, Part 2 on all digital music platforms across the world.

On August 12 starting at 6 p.m., the pop-rock group will formally debut songs from their new album at an album launch event in Eastwood City Central Plaza. Free admission!
