A few Filipino musicians from across the country have joined forces to record “Bagani,” the official theme song for the 500th anniversary of the Victory of Mactan and the Philippines’ participation in the world’s first circumnavigation. The music video, which premieres today at 8:00 p.m., shows an all-star performance by a group put together by PhilPop and The National Quincentennial Committee, with Jude Gitamondoc of Kadasig and Jeremy Sarmiento of MinPop.

Espiritu, and documentary films such as Jose Rizal saLandas ng Paglaya and May Pagasa ang Bantayogni Andres Bonifacio.

Commissioned by The National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) to give its audience a feeling of hope and optimism, the song was written and composed by Roel Rostata, arranged and produced by Jungee Marcelo, with Visayan lyrics in the chorus by Jude Gitamondoc.

Honoring solidarity and bayanihan spirit during tough times

According to its chief songwriter, Roel Rostata the track was written as a response to the growing challenges that the Filipino people are experiencing during the time of the pandemic, and how important it is repurpose music as a vessel to champion resiliency and bayanihan spirit. “There’s no other way to rise above and make it through this pandemic other than working together,” Rostata shares in a statement. “Bagani” encourages the listeners to turn fears and doubts to hope and healing, to manifest dreams into reality and to embrace victory. The song also encourages listeners to be part of the solution despite all the negativity and problems.”

“Bagani” is a by-product of PhilPop Bootcamp 2019, an initiative that aims to empower the next generations of contemporary Filipino singer-songwriters. PhilPop Executive Director Dinah Remolacio shares that the song was recorded for the Quincentennial celebration, but its inherent meaning has expanded into honoring our collective optimism and teamwork to rebuild the nation, and bring to light stories of optimism and resilience. “Eventually, the song became larger than what it was originally intended for,” Remolacio shares.“It triggers a strong commitment to the past and our future. It evokes strength and at the same time— solidarity.”

The music video marks the collaboration between NQC and PhilPop to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Victory of Mactan in 2021 as part of the numerous virtual celebrations commemorating a significant milestone in Philippine and global history.

The country’s premier songwriting competition will act as the screening committee for the official theme song, as well as co-producing its official music video with Warner Music Philippines, as part of the collaboration agreement.

The official music video of “Bagani” is out now.

“Sana’y Alam Mo,” Chen Pangan released a new debut that will surely prime for crossover success

Chen, a Filipina singer-songwriter, is someone to keep an eye on this year. As the lead guitarist and one of the vocalists of Unit 406, the emerging pop sensation has had some success with songs like “Kahit Na AnongSabihin Ng Iba” and “TanghalingTapat,” which won her band a nomination for Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist at the 2018 Awit Awards.

With the release of her debut single, ‘Sana’yAlam Mo,’ under MCA Music Inc. this year and out now on all streaming platforms.  Chen is poised to take on a new role as a solo artist.

The song falls into stripped-down pop territory before its monumental revelation in the chorus, delivered with soulful, emotive vocals and sentimental songwriting style. She sings, “Nangangarap kung maibabaliksasimulalahat / uulitinko, ‘di nagsisisisaiyo,” as if from a place of great longing and sorrow.

According to Chen, ‘Sana’yAlam Mo’ is a song that speaks of one’s yearning for love. “It’s about loving someone without being loved back and eventually accepting reality and choosing to let go,” says the talented newcomer. “And it’s also about deciding to turn the page and move forward.”

Chen explains that the recording process behind ‘Sana’yAlam Mo’ went smooth despite the challenges of having to internalize the emotional component of the lyrics, while allowing herself to feel its pain. “The experience working with Gab and Tiny was super chill and fun,” Chen shares. “ There was never a time that we had to unplug or revise. Everything just flowed very well.” ‘Sana’yAlam Mo’ was composed, arranged, and produced by Gabriel Tagadtad, with additional production by Tiny Corpuz.

Chen is currently pursuing her artistic potential both inside and outside of her band, Unit 406. She knows what kind of music she wants to make, and she’s ready to take on any challenges that come her way, as evidenced by her first solo single, ‘Sana’yAlam Mo.’ In a quote she says, “What separates me from other artists is the tone and personality my music brings.” Unlike hugotsongs, ‘Sana’yAlam Mo’ has an R&B flavor to it that is more snappy than your average love song. It’s not as soft and gentle as the previous song, but it’s very raw and true to the message of bittersweet love.

With his latest single ‘Stop,’ AJ Mitchell is poised for stardom

Gold-certified pop phenom AJ Mitchell has released a new single called “STOP,” which adds to his immersive sonic world. The song is the next chapter from his eagerly anticipated full-length debut album, Skyview, which is set to be released this year and executive produced by Mike Dean.

A thumping bass line and a flurry of funk guitar are combined with a show-stopping vocal performance in this track. He delivers enthralling verses before launching into the hook, “I don’t want to stop, baby it’s our time.”

“STOP” continues the journey that was set in “CAMERAS ON,” released late last Month. The conceptual lyric video shared today picks up where “CAMERAS ON” left off. While “CAMERAS ON” depicts the story of AJ dealing with the darker sides of fame and his previous experiences with the content collective Team 10, the new lyric video finds him walking away from the cameras to the stage, depicting his passion and dedication to the music and what truly matters.

With all of the songs released from Skyview thus far, we’ve seen AJ Mitchell truly coming into his own, showcasing his knack for great storytelling.

“When you listen to the album, I want you to feel nostalgic,” AJ says. “It really takes me home. At the same time, I want you to know more about who I am. Talking to the camera is unnatural for me. The best way for everybody to understand me is through my songs. I’m still just a kid who lives his life through music. There’s not a single day I don’t think about it or don’t want to run to my guitar, my piano, or my notepad and start writing.”

AJ Mitchell has steadily asserted himself as pop’s most charismatic new leading man since his debut in 2018. He surpassed the 1-billion stream mark on Spotify in just three years, averaging over 7 million monthly listeners. He was named a Vevo LIFT artist and an MTV Push artist, and he was named to Variety’s “Young Hollywood” 2020 list. In addition to receiving praise from Billboard, Idolator, Highsnobiety, and Seventeen, he gave standout performances at the MTV Video Music Awards, as well as on The Today Show and Good Day New York. The gold-selling title track “Slow Dance” [feat. Ava Max] from his Slow Dance EP was released in 2019. So far, he’s had four songs in the Top 40 at Pop Radio, including the latter. He’s also established himself as a reliable partner, recently collaborating with Cheat Codes on “Hate You + Love You.” He also worked with Elle Henderson, Steve Aoki, Captain Cuts, and others in 2020. He spent the previous year putting together his full-length debut Skyview, with legendary Mike Dean serving as Executive Producer. The cameras are now trained on AJ Mitchell, and he is poised to shine in 2021.

“Labis-labis,” Sponge Cola’s newest single that puts a new twist on romance

Sponge Cola has always been adept at capturing the divine feeling of a romantic high, the cautionary tale that follows, and the journey trapped in between the respective timelines, aside from churning out modern rock classics that carve a special place in our collective consciousness. The “Siguro Nga” hitmakers have perfected the art of spearheading the soundtrack of our lives with widespread appeal, and with the launch of their new single “Labis-labis” through Sony Music Philippines, they are putting a uniquely captivating yet relatable spin on the “love song” format.

According to guitarist Erwin “Armo” Armovit, their latest single is all about the “overflowing, overwhelming joy of being fully yourself with someone,” and was written from a sincere, heartwarming place. “Love is an inexhaustible source of inspiration that takes countless forms; and songs are stories set to music. Every person experiences love differently, but every person experiences love.”

Having redefined stories about romance and defeat from varying lenses, Sponge Cola refuses to pin down their songwriting sensibilities with a one-dimensional approach. As bassist Gosh Dilay puts it, “With love songs, there is always a new angle/new dimension to explore.”

True to its core, “Labis-labis” works because beyond its gloriously cinematic chorus and inescapable verses, the song isspecifically made to describe a moment—fleeting, short, but resonant to the experiences of the people around us, most especially those that chose to accept and reciprocate love in various shapes and forms, regardless of its possible consequences. Dilay perfectly sums up this emotional retreat into words, “it’s the gleeful feeling of excitement upon seeing someone you love, after being away for so long. Or even just after a brief period. That’s the magic of the song.”

Recording “Labis-labis” turned out to be fun and exciting for Sponge Cola, even if it has undergone the most transformations out of any songs that they’ve previously worked on. “The song started as a mid-tempo, all acoustic ballad and continuously evolved into its current state as we played it together as a band and incorporated modern arrangement ideas from our producer, Joey Santos.” Armovit said, “We had to play the song repeatedly and listen to really figure out what it needed and where it wanted to go.”

The track incorporated their funk, although subtly, while maintaining the arrangement’s unrepentant pop smarts. Musically, the compositions also took a more interesting turn, making it a bit more shaking and unique.

Sponge Cola’s “Labis-labis” is out now on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines.

Zelijah, a rapper/producer, takes a ride down memory lane with his song “17”

Zelijah

Zelijah’s new song “17,” which is out today through Sony Music Philippines, takes a ride down memory lane. The Filipino rapper/producer strikes a balance between honing a music palate that distills today’s algorithm-driven sounds and addressing the convergence of different music genres with a pop flair, trading verses with fellow hip-hop artist Ellis G on bossa-infused, lo-fi beats and stripped-down guitars.

“17” was supposed to be a sad little tune about cherishing the best years of our lives in a bubble, tucked away from the hassles of adult responsibilities. “But the vibe it gave us when we were working on the song was just purely nostalgic so we thought of writing the lyrics about the 2012 and 2017 era where both of us were 17 years old,” the multi-talented artist admits in a statement. “Personally, this age bracket is where we worry less about the world and only think about ourselves and all the mundane things— free from our life problems,” said Zelijah

Zelijah produced, mixed, and mastered the track alone in his home studio, reasserting creative control over his art. The multi-hyphenate artist is used to doing these by himself, having worked with several artists behind the scenes, from big names such as Young JV and Jason Dy to record-breaking behemoths such as Loonie and John Roa. “It was hard at first but then it just grows on you till it becomes a normal thing to do,” he shares. “Personally, having control over these sections makes the song more authentic to me. It also allows me to play around with different techniques and approaches that other engineers wouldn’t do.”

“It’s always fun working with Ellis to be honest,” says Zelijah. “We both push each other’s boundaries. We tend to one up each other but in a good way. There’s no room for sugar coating and fake compliments between us. We prefer to keep it blunt in everything we do for us to grow.” Zelijah thanked Ellis G for his contribution to “17.” Ellis G, for one, freestyled on the mic with a particular theme in mind, delving further into the enjoyable side of nostalgia in order to capture the feeling of everlasting youth.

Zelijah’s “17” is out now on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines. The song will be part of the upcoming EP, ‘Press F to Drop Out’—to be released soon.

Destiny Rogers expressed gratitude for BLACKPINK’s Lisa for helping her go viral and releases a new version of “Tomboy.”

Destiny Rogers

Destiny Rogers, a rising singer/songwriter, has released a new version of her debut single “Tomboy,” which features New Jersey rap sensation Coi Leray.

After Lisa of K-Pop group BLACKPINK posted a choreographed mini-film entitled “Lili’s Movie” performed to “Tomboy,” which has received over 39 million views and counting since its release last month, this new version has sparked interest in the song.

Following Lisa’s post, Destiny’s single “Tomboy” peaked at #12 on the Spotify Viral 50 Global chart and is currently top 20 on the chart. Destiny connected with Lisa from BLACKPINK directly on FaceTime last night to thank her for the new wave of support for “Tomboy.”

“Tomboy” is Destiny’s signature single boasting over 44 million audio streams. Nylon raved upon its release: “Talk about a killer debut” and Ones To Watch called the single “a striking grand entrance into the music world.”

“Tomboy” was produced by Grammy-Award winning producers and songwriters, The Stereotypes (Bruno Mars “24K Magic,” Cardi B/Bruno Mars “Please Me”), and introduced Destiny to listeners and showcased her strong songwriting skills and soulful lyrics.

Destiny Rogers is currently working on new material in the studio. G-Eazy and Kiana Lede’s “A Little More” was co-written with her, and she is featured on Phora’s latest track “the art of letting go.”

About Destiny Rogers

21-year-old Destiny Rogers is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who was born and bred in Lodi, a small Northern California town. At age 6, she became obsessed with skateboarding and even thought she wanted to pursue her passion professionally. But, growing up in the church with her father who is a youth pastor and listened to AC/DC and Mexican mother who listened to Mariachi, Destiny was pulled in by the power of music. At age 9 she received her first guitar and by age 10 taught herself how to play by watching Justin Bieber covers online and thereafter realized she could sing.

After a few years of busking in Los Angeles on the weekends and facing trials and tribulations of the music industry, she was finally connected to members of Grammy-Award winning songwriter/producer team The Stereotypes (Bruno Mars, Cardi B) and eventually began working with them. She signed to their label, Beach Wave Sound in 2018.  The result is confidence in the languid R&B and hip-hop-inflected pop songs which can be heard on her Tomboy EP.

Destiny has performed at various festivals including Something in the Water, Lights On and Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw. She most recently wrapped tour with Ruel on his “Free Time Tour” with dates across North America and Europe.
