Rico Blanco’s “This Too Shall Pass” is now out on YouTube

Rico Blanco

Watch Rico Blanco’s inspiring music video for “This Too Shall Pass” for his new solo single in four years. With various footage taken here and abroad, the visuals for “This Too Shall Pass” take a closer look at how the pandemic has brought the entire world to a standstill.

Given the unprecedented uncertainty and challenges that COVID-19 poses, the video doubles as a tribute to the unsung heroes and frontliners leading the fight against an invisible enemy, showing us the true meaning of bayanihan in times of crisis.

Intercut with scenes of the “new normal” from around the globe, it also depicts the alt-rock icon performing the song at the confines of his home: devoid of flashy production designs and envelope-pushing concepts, but framed with an underlying message of resilience and hope.

Positive Reception

Two weeks earlier, “This Too Shall Pass” was released on all digital and streaming platforms worldwide under Sony Music.

The massive anthem has received critical acclaim from various publications in the country. MYX Philippines praised his work for giving listeners “a sense of reassurance, something we all need given the current situation.” Bandwagon Asia called the song an “ode to the light of the human spirit in dark times,” while GMA News described it as “a perfect source of inspiration.”

An Initiative for COVID-19 Response and Relief

Rico Blanco

To help fund the collective COVID-19 response in the Philippines, Rico Blanco is waiving his artist royalties for the music video of “This Too Shall Pass,” and Sony Music Philippines will be donating 100% of the global proceeds to www.puhon.ph for the first 6 months of release.

Puhon means “hopefully” in Visayan. The site contains inspiring stories and messages of encouragement to people at the frontline of fighting the pandemic.

Using the tagline #MakeHopeViral, to date, the site has raised P4.6M for personal protective equipment (PPEs) & nutrition support for frontline healthcare workers, COVID-19 testing kits, and relief goods for daily wage workers. Other SME Philippines artists with messages of support & encouragement on the site are SB19, Zelijah, Dionela, Nathan & Mercury, Alex Bruce, Ace Banzuelo&sydhartha.

Philippine hit! 2gether soundtrack by Scrubb

Scrubb

Official soundtrack featuring the music of Thai crossover sensation Scrubb, after the massive hype surrounding 2gether: The Series. This continues to dominate streaming platforms such as Spotify with an average of four to six entries a day on the Philippines Viral Top 50. Scrubb’s songs have somehow aided in championing a narrative that supports the unique romantic experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. Their involvement in the official soundtrack of a pop culture behemoth encourages visibility and representation in mainstream media, which has long shunned stories that go against societal norms.

“As an artist, we have no specific audience, our songs are our diaries. It’s a way for us to keep the good memories from that period of time. I think the listeners can also relate to the song as they face similar situation or atmosphere. We are happy when anyone can enjoy and get inspired by our song no matter who they are.” shares MueyThawatponWongbunsiri, the other half of Scrubb.

Aside from their contribution to the 2gether soundtrack, the Smile duo has recently released their new single “ธรรมดา (Everyday)” earlier this year with a music video directed by prolific filmmaker Domu. Their back catalog, which features previous hits, “ขอ (Wish),” “ทุกอย่าง (Everything),” “รอยยิ้ม (Smile),” and “ใกล้ (Close),” has consistently charted on the local digital and streaming services for more than a month. Its success in the Philippines and the Asian region is propelled by the publicity it received from the smash series, which currently airs on Thailand’sGMM 25 and Line TV, as well as the YouTube account of GMMTV.

“The author is one of our fans who started writing this story as an online fiction inspired by our songs,” recalls Scrubb’s Torpong “Ball” Chantabubpha on how their infectious set of melodic guitar pop tunes made its way to the Original Soundtrack (OST) of the Boys Love (BL)hit. “Then it got published as a book. Finally, the series came out, which encouraged more people to listen to our songs. We have to thankJitti, the author, for putting our songs in the original story and making all of these things happen.”

To date, the folk-pop duo has been receiving offers to play a number of shows abroad from international promoters. Ball adds, “Our plans to tour outside Thailand are forced to stop because of COVID-19 outbreak. At the moment we are writing, rehearsing, and preparing to be back on stage once again once this pandemic is finally over. We also hope that we’ll get a chance to be there and play for our fans in the Philippines soon.”

The songs from the official soundtrack of 2gether: The Series, which prominently feature the music of Scrubb, are now available on all digital and streaming platforms worldwide via Sony Music.

Asia’s largest Martial Arts Organization, One Championship partnered with American Television

The recent rise of Asian-American martial arts athletes is sparking a global revolution, placing the spotlight over a talent pool that features the absolute best of both the East and the West. Without a doubt, has the largest collection of Asian martial arts World Champions who are currently employed on its elite roster of talent. The list of legendary figures is long and consists of some of the most iconic names in the history of martial arts.

The roster includes Japanese mixed martial arts legend Shinya Aoki and Yoshihiro Akiyama, as well as Muay Thai legends Nong-O Gaiyanghadao, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, and Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex. The organization even once held a title defense for former boxing World Champion and pound-for-pound great, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

ONE Championship partnered with American television network Turner to bring ONE’s events to the mainstream via TNT and subscription-based digital platform B/R Live. But while mixed martial arts is already a popular sport in the United States, ONE vowed to bring a unique flavor that American fans have never experienced before.

“ONE is a celebration of Asia’s greatest cultural treasure, and its deep-rooted Asian values of integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion. I am confident that the American audience will love our formula of values, heroes, and stories. It’s refreshing, unlike anything available in America right now in terms of our values in martial arts” says Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE.

Sityodtong believes his martial arts heroes have the power to change the way mixed martial arts is perceived in the United States and across the entire world. By telling the stories of his athletes’ triumph over adversity and tribulation, he hopes to inspire the general audience.

Of course, part of that plan involves bringing the Asian-American community in the US closer to its Asian-American talent, and his athletes have yet to let him down. Let’s take a closer look at a handful of those athletes now.

Here are seven of the most prolific Asian-American martial arts athletes in ONE Championship.

1) Angela Lee

https://youtu.be/kOKxptJnWl8

Hawaii resident Angela Lee leads the pack. The 23-year-old was born of a Singaporean father and Korean mother, and lives in Waipahu with her husband, BJJ World Champion Bruno Pucci.

Lee has been a World Champion since 2016, when she captured the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title with a thrilling five-round Bout of the Year effort over Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi. She is idolized by young girls the world over, and is easily the most recognized athlete in ONE Championship.

Despite her young age, Lee is a two-time World Pankration Champion, a 2013 Hawaii State Wrestling Champion, and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Her grocery list of accomplishments is extraordinary, and the scariest part about her talent is that she’s only just begun. Lee still has a lot left in her career, and she is certainly destined to accomplish even more.

2) Christian Lee

https://youtu.be/M6HeC_n8giU

Angela’s younger brother Christian appears second on this list. Growing up in Hawaii, the Lee siblings have a very close relationship. They basically trained together since early childhood, and have been each other’s chief sparring partner in their family gym for the majority of their careers thus far.

Like his older sister, Christian is also a World Champion. In fact, he is the youngest male World Champion in mixed martial arts history, having captured the ONE Lightweight World Title with an emphatic knockout victory over Japanese veteran Shinya Aoki in 2019.

To add to that, Christian also holds black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Total Defense System, and has six world titles across the disciplines of BJJ, pankration, mixed martial arts, and submission grappling.

3) Janet Todd

https://youtu.be/F9H3N9MH4xw

Although she was raised in Southern California, Japanese-American athlete Janet “JT” Todd would visit Japan frequently with her mother when she was young, and would even spend month-long vacations in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Todd is a relative newcomer to ONE Championship. But despite her limited time thus far in the ONE Championship ring, the former IFMA Pan-American Muay Thai Champion has been absolutely electric in her performances.

Just last February, Todd wrested the ONE Atomweight Kickboxing World Title away from Thai superstar Stamp Fairtex in a close five round title tilt. When she isn’t competing on the world’s biggest global stage of martial arts competition, or training at home on the United States’ west coast, Todd doubles as an aerospace engineer who helps develop equipment for use in space travel.

4) Bi Nguyen

https://youtu.be/gbgWyMpKJcs

Vietnamese-American Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen was born in rural Vietnam, but moved to the United States as a child and has lived there ever since.

Nguyen took up martial arts to empower herself with the knowledge of self-defense, after experiencing domestic violence at the hands of an abusive ex-boyfriend. Toda Nguyen is one of the most popular athletes on the ONE Championship roster, especially in her home country of Vietnam.

At home in Houston, Nguyen would often travel to New Mexico for training camps at the renowned Jackson-Wink MMA, where she developed a close personal relationship with fellow Asian-American star Michelle Waterson.

Fans in the United States may best recognize Nguyen, however, for her time spent as a contestant on the 37th season of hit reality television series, Survivor. Nguyen was forced to pull herself out of the game after injuring her knee in an immunity challenge.

5) Aung La N Sang

https://youtu.be/bxG7AbO2FbE

A true sports icon, “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang is the most prolific World Champion in ONE Championship. He holds two World Titles with the promotion, with the ONE Light Heavyweight and Middleweight World Championship belts draped across his shoulders.

Aung La was born in Myanmar but moved to the United States to study. He began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other disciplines while studying Agriculture Science at Andrews University in Michigan. After graduating, Aung La traveled across the continental US as a migratory beekeeper, but soon made the decision to go full-time in martial arts.

Today, Aung La lives with his family in Southern Florida, where he trains alongside other World Champions such as Kamaru Usman, Gilbert Burns, and Stefan Struve, at the world-renowned Hardknocks 365 under highly-regarded coach Henri Hooft.

Whenever Aung La travels halfway across the globe to compete in front of his fans in his native Yangon, he is greeted with a reception befitting that of a national hero.

6) Thanh Le

https://youtu.be/NfFYaKGhxpk

Vietnamese-American Thanh Le is without a doubt one of the hottest prospects on the ONE Championship roster today. Growing up in New Orleans, Thanh trained in his father’s taekwondo school at a young age, traveling to tournaments with the competition team. However, it was in 2011 that he became intrigued by the sport of mixed martial arts.

Not long after, Thanh tried his hand in amateur promotions and it would become his greatest passion. Thanh would then turn professional in 2013, going 8-1 to start his career while capturing a title in regional promotion, LFA. He joined ONE Championship in 2019, scoring an emphatic head kick knockout over the tough Yusup Saadulaev.

Today, Thanh is one of the promotion’s top featherweights, and is getting very close to a title shot against reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen.

7) Brandon Vera

https://youtu.be/837njRgpnrk

Mixed martial arts veteran and reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera is arguably the second-most recognizable combat sports athlete next to the legendary Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

The Filipino-American superstar has been in the game for nearly two decades. Raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Vera began his career in North America, after earning a wrestling scholarship at Old Dominion University and spending time in service in the United States Air Force. In the military, Vera was a member of the Greco-Roman wrestling team.

Vera made his ONE Championship debut in 2014, stunning Igor Subora by knockout. He then captured the ONE Heavyweight World Title with a KO victory over Paul Cheng in 2015.

Today, Vera splits time between living in Guam, and in the Philippine capital of Manila where he plans to bring his very own Alliance Training Center to the country to help develop the next generation of Filipino martial arts athletes.

Rico Blanco four years after with inspiring new anthem “This Too Shall Pass”

Rico Blanco

This Too Shall Pass is Rico Blanco’s first solo single in four years hiatus in making songs of his own, as well as his first under Sony Music Philippines. The song was written from a place of discomfort and fear, witnessing how the much louder tremor of pandemic anxiety instantly changed our lives and left us with little time to mourn and move forward. This Too Shall Pass succeeds in repurposing music’s mission: Outside of its function as an entertainment fodder and a way to escape, it carries the resilience of the human spirit. In darkness, it shines brighter.

With frontliners risking their lives with little protection, people going hungry, and the social order crumbling to pieces, Rico felt powerless by the situation. Hence, he had to forego his difficulties of living alone and coping with his own emotional troubles, as there was work to be done. He shares, “My efforts are little in light of a pandemic like this. As big as my imagination is for this song, I also feel that it’s not enough. But it’s what I can do and contribute as a musician. Some songs are anchored on truth, but they are wrapped and adorned in a lot of romanticized thoughts. This song is real, inwards and also outwards; it’s something that I really want to tell every single person. I wasn’t able to give a message to the frontliners, and I feel very guilty about this. I needed to finish this, and I want them to hear this. I know each one of us is going through something. I wrote this song as my way to reach out.”

THIS TOO SHALL PASS [COVER ARTWORK]

With sonic elements that span continents and a carefully honed production which he supervised himself, Rico’s latest single defies convention with a global sounding opus that incorporates musical dispatches and personal anecdotes. From samples of his nieces laughing culled from a family chat group to his attempt to blur the cultural lines by incorporating European techno, hip-hop beats, Asian riffs, Afro chanting, and Pinoy fiesta in a seamless, genre-bending extravaganza, This Too Shall Pass is ambitious in scope and sound design, but its heart is for the people who need light and love.

As Sony Music’s GM Philippines and VP Business Development Asia, Ms. Roslyn Pineda sums it up: “Music is important – we all know this.  But never more so than when we are faced with uncertainty, because it is then that the power of music becomes unquantifiable, almost limitless.  Music can make you feel you’re not alone. Music can save you from despair.  And so it is with a song like This Too Shall Pass.  It is so relevant to the times that it becomes a declaration, a prayer, a mantra — all rolled into one.”

Rico Blanco’s “This Too Shall Pass” is now available on all digital platforms worldwide. Watch out for the music video to be released soon.

2. “Two Sides” the new single of Gentle Bones and Charlie Lim

Gentle Bones and Charlie Lim: Listen to ‘Two Sides’ here

Gentle Bones and Charlie Lim, the two of Singapore’s most prolific singer-songwriter and produced jointly for the first time ever have come together to pen the bittersweet anthem “Two Sides.” The song represents the two sides in every relationship and will be released under brand new label, Yung Lee Records (YLR), helmed by Gentle Bones. This is an exciting debut for YLR amidst the glooming climate of 2020. Also this is the third of ten singles Gentle Bones has planned for release this year, after the light and  playful tracks, “Why Do We?” and “Be Cool.”

“Joel has a strong sense of melody which made writing and producing this song quite effortless,” explains Charlie. “I believe we’ve come up with a song that perfectly addresses our struggles of the duality we face in both our personal relationships and our  strive to touch people with our music,” Bones continues.

“Two Sides” starts off with a distinct, lilting beat which introduces the listener to a hopeful but tender mood. Having been a fan of each other’s works for many years, Gentle Bones and Charlie Lim utilised their shared love for late 90s/early 2000s boy bands by putting their own stamp on it. It is through this sound that listeners were able to enjoy the artists’ beautiful meld of vocal harmonies, designed to bring us on a journey of nostalgia.

Providing some insight into the song’s message, Charlie Lim shares, “A lot of the lyrics came from a place of frustration with someone, but also knowing there’s a reason why things happen the way they do and why people are the way they are.” Gentle Bones chimes in with, “It all stems from love and a bit of heartbreak to arrive at an understanding that we are all one with our differences.”

The reggaeton-infused banger is the first song off the teen group’s upcoming third album, and was written by all members, alongside Patrick Ingunza and co-producers Daniel Rondon and Rafael Rodru. “We originally recorded it that long ago too,” CNCO’s Joel Pimentel shares in a statement. “However, the time was never right to release it. Then this January we had the idea to re-record the song and put it out as our next official single. The idea to add Natti Natasha came from a Q&A she did on Twitter where fans asked if she would like to collaborate with us, and she said yes!”

CNCO 2020

As huge fans of the Dominican pop superstar, the chart-topping group didn’t hesitate to invite Natasha to be part of the track. “She happened to be in the studio when we sent over the material,” CNCO Richard Camacho reveals. “In just 24 hours, she finished her lines. 4 days later, we were in Puerto Rico shooting the video. It was that fast.”

On its first week of release, the music video for “Honey Boo” peaked at No.1 on YouTube Trending Videos chart worldwide, surpassing 2 million views in less than 24 hours. The Joaquin Cambre-helmed visual follows the multi-platinum Latin boyband as they play billiards, dance in basketball courts, and tour the scorching streets of Puerto Rico.

“It’s a fun and light song,” Camacho describes the global hit turned TikTok viral smash. “We just want to bring joy to the world and make people want to get up and dance.”

“Honey Boo” is now out on various streaming and digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music.

Ben&Ben stunning new single to launch via YouTube Live event

Ben&Ben, the Award-winning, nine-piece collective and currently one of the most-streamed Filipino artists with dedicated fan bases across the world will release their international new single “Doors” on Thursday, April 16 through Sony Music. Then on Saturday, April 18, the dynamic young act will host a special YouTube Live event on the band’s YouTube channel to raise funds for the COVID-19 response in the Philippines.

Fans across the world can tune in from 7:00pm GMT + 8 (9:00pm AEST/7:00am EST/12:00pm BST) to see the acclaimed nine-piece perform “Doors” alongside other tracks from their certified Platinum and best-selling 2019 debut album, LIMASAWA STREET, including recently released “Fall”(watch the video HERE). Each member of the band will connect from their respective homes to stream the performance in their unique signature 3 x 3 format.  After the event, the live stream will continue to be available on YouTube as a video on demand.

“Doors” is mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Miles Walker (Beyonce, Usher, Coldplay, Rihanna) and mastered by Leon Zervos (P!nk, Maroon 5, Beastie Boys, Willy Nelson).

Also Ben&Ben explains: “Doors” is one of the most personal songs that we’ve written. It’s about passive-aggressiveness, how it can ruin relationships, and how anyone can be on either the sending or receiving end of it. So much of the hurt in the world now, much of which we all experience daily as well, is caused by people not speaking what is really on their minds… We drew on our emotions on these topics to craft the melodies, riffs, beats, and textures of the song. It was done so quickly; one day we were jamming the song, and a few days after we already had the track on record. Everyone just performed their most raw and pure feelings to make the arrangement.”

“YouTube is proud to collaborate with Sony to enable Ben&Ben’s live streaming event which aims to create a donation drive for COVID-19 response efforts. It is uplifting to see the power of music and Filipinos’ spirit of bayanihan coming together to lend a helping hand during this increasingly challenging time. We hope that Ben&Ben’s event does not just help raise funds but inspire Filipinos to get through difficult moments through music,” said Bernadette Nacario, Country Director, Google Philippines.

About the band

Ben&Ben photo landscape

Ben&Ben consists of brothers Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin on acoustic guitars and vocals, PochBarretto on electric guitar, Jam Villanueva on drums, Agnes Reoma on bass, Patricia Lasaten on keyboards, Toni Munoz and Andrew de Pano on percussions, and KeiferCabugao on violin. Combining folk and indie music with pop sensibilities, they have redefined the mainstream music lane with a sound that bridges the musical traditions of the past with a contemporary touch. And this is what sets them apart from their peers: Ben&Ben creates a blueprint that makes intimacy feel big and expansive.

Last month, Ben&Ben joined 14 artists across Asia in the remake of Taiwanese superstar Eric Chou’s original track “Forever Beautiful,” as part of their efforts to express solidarity and support for those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. On March 27, they held a Facebook Live event for their COVID-19 donation site (www.puhon.ph), which garnered 2.2M views in the first 24 hours, surpassing the Facebook Live statistics of Latin Superstars Alejandro Sanz and Juanes. The donation site was created by Ben&Ben, Sony Music Philippines and other partners, with inspiring stories and messages of encouragement to frontliners. Puhon is a beautiful Visayan (Philippine dialect) word that means “hopefully” and is a famous lyric of Ben&Ben.

Ben&Ben was invited to perform at Hong Kong’s Clockenflap Music & Arts Festival 2019 and Austin’s South by Southwest Music Festival 2020, and has graced Singapore’s Music Matters and Manila’s Wanderland Music & Arts Festival 2018 – where they co-headlined with international acts such as Lauv, Jhené Aiko, Kodaline and Daniel Caesar. In previous years, the prolific ensemble has performed in arenas and large-scale venues, most notably the Philippine Arena with a maximum capacity of 55,000, and other prominent events held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and the MOA arena – both with more than 15,000 attendees.

With diverse musical influences that include The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, Elton John, Bee Gees, Radwimps, Laura Marling, Bon Iver, Tom Misch, and Dave Matthews Band, to name a few, their songs paint an indelible portrait of a generation that knows their worth despite the brokenness inside, creating a connection between the personal and the universal.

Ben&Ben will continue to release music throughout 2020 and plan to tour their incredible live set again when possible.

The acclaimed hip-hop figure has released new singles that create uplifting artistic statements through socially relevant songs. “Sampaguita,” his latest collaboration with accomplished young singer-songwriter Juan KarlosLabajo, proved to be as successful as his previous classic hits, smashing out of the gate with more than a million views in less than a month.

“When Gloc-9 decided to become independent, he made it clear to work on projects that matter to him on a personal level, and at the same time, promote awareness on the plight of the underprivileged Filipinos through his musical platform,” Thea reveals in a statement.

To their advantage, the recent releases garnered positive reception from music fans. The music icon’s recent performance with fellow rapper and songwriter Flow G on Wish 107.5 bus debuted at No. 1 on YouTube’s trending videos chart, reaping more than 6 million views as of today’s update. His captivating performance of “Halik” currently sits inside the video streaming chart’s Top 20 for a third week in a row—a blockbuster feat that adds value to his growing legacy as a successful hip-hop artist approaching his third decade in the game.

Another video of Gloc-9 is also making rounds on YouTube’s trending videos chart. His 24 bars rap challenge peaked at No. 4 with more than a million views in less than a week of its release. Taking dexterity to the next level, the award-winning rapper impressed listeners with a soul-baring wordplay over a Flip D beat.

“Gloc-9 proves that even with challenges that stem from his newfound DIY leanings, there are solutions to impart your passion, and by using the online platform, the local rap and hip-hop music industry is still reaching out to the fans and followers, providing entertainment and positivity in a time of uncertainty,” Asintada’s Thea Gomez Pollisco shares. “This goes to prove what Gloc-9 has always been saying: inspiration and learning can come from all directions.”

At present, the prolific artist is actively involved in raising funds for both the frontliners and the urban poor communities through various charitable institutions and artist initiatives. He is also set to release a bunch of new singles and collaborations soon under his own management and production outfit, Asintada—which is home to several music acts such as Shanti Dope, JKris, Lirah, and Sandiwa.
