Jollibee Opens First Store in Alberta, Canada to a Massive Crowd, Days-Long Camp-Outs

Jollibee Edmonton

Popular fast-food chain Jollibee opened its first store in Canada’s Alberta province on Friday morning, August 16,to the excitement of thousands of fans who lined up as early as three days in advance to get a first taste.Prior to the restaurant’s front doors openingat 7 AM, approximately 500 customers were already inline, ready with an array of #ItsOurTurn signs to show their enthusiasm for the home of the famous Chickenjoy finally arriving in their province.

Twenty-six-year-old Jordan Haworth, the first customer to fall in line, waited for a record three days before the store opened to the public – and he had never even tried Jollibee before! Haworth shared, “When I first set up camp outside Jollibee with my mat and fold-out chair, a few people approached me and asked if what I was doing was real or a stunt. I shared with them that I was inspired by my mom who travelled to the Philippines years ago and used to rave about Jollibee when she came home. My mom joined me as the second person in line and it was such a special feeling to be able to experience this with her. When the doors opened and I bit into my first piece of ‘Chickenjoy’, I totally understood what all of the hype was about.”

Jollibee fans traveled from as far as Nova Scotia, a nine-hour flight to Edmonton, to get a taste of the brand’s world-famous Chickenjoy, which is delicately hand-breaded to be crispylicious on the outside, with a secret marinade that makes it juicylicious on the inside. Additional fan-favorite items on opening day included Jolly Spaghetti, with its signature sweet-style sauce loaded with chunky slices of savory ham and hotdog, and Peach Mango Pie made with real Philippine mangoes enveloped with a flaky golden-brown crust.

Maribeth Dela Cruz

“We are thrilled to have arrived in Alberta and are humbled by the enthusiasm we’ve felt from the local community. Alberta has watched as we’ve opened stores in Winnipeg and the Greater Toronto Area over the past few years and the people here can finally say, ‘It’s Our Turn!”said Maribeth Dela Cruz, President of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) North America Philippine Brands.

The new Edmonton location marks Jollibee’s 5th location in Canada as the chain pursues its goal to grow to 100 stores in the countryin 5 years. The brand plans to open its next store in Calgary by this September, making it the second store to open in the Alberta province.

Jollibee is the flagship brand of Jollibee Foods Corporation’s 14 brands. JFC is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing Asian restaurant companies with more than 4,500 stores in 21 countries.

Tim Hortons always wants to #MakeYourDayGood so we also want to introduce two inspiring Fil-Canadians who have decided to come back to their home country, for good. Yoya Gueco is a young mother of two who lived in Canada for years but decided to come home to set up her own fashion business, Yoya Moda. Meanwhile, Rolando Isla, who was doing well in Canada, came back and established the Isla Kali Mandirigma Martial Arts School. Listen to their uplifting stories of love and perseverance.

Maple Mustard Wrap with Iced French Vanilla

Maple Cream Donut

And to keep the celebrations going, Tim Hortons introduced its newest and yummiest limited edition offerings: the Maple Mustard Chicken Wrap, the Maple Cream Donut and Iced French Vanilla. TH lovers will enjoy these special treats until September 1!

Both goodie foodies are perfectly paired with the cold Iced French vanilla! All these festive treats are only available for a limited time.

Eden Announces June 4 As Its National Cheese Day

When we ask for our favorite comfort food, we don’t just crave for the familiar taste but as well as the memories and that warm fuzzy feeling that it brings to the table.Comfort food nourishes both the body and soul. It’s rarely the most luxurious or expensive meal one has ever had, but often the simplest.

And what could be a better comfort food than our all-time Pinoy favorites like Caldereta, mechado, salad, pichi-pichi, embotiod, majablanca or the never-dying Filipino-style spaghetti.

What do they have in common?

The creamy deliciousness of a cheese. The cheese that has garnished and revamped these and many other Filipino classics for the past 38 years. The full creamy taste of Eden Cheese! The Filipino meals will never be the same without a cheese on the table.

Food journalist renowned “Adobo Queen” Nancy Reyes Lumen” told about Eden Cheese products:

“Cheese is such a wonderful food that you can’t outgrow it. It is indispensable to our culture and daily lives as Filipinos. Cheese is one of the earliest foods we taste and the delight of it stays on from infancy to adulthood. We have grown up with it and it has been a part of our lives all these years. Cheese is practically a “no-fail” ingredient…you can even burn it and it still tastes good. We love cheese because it blends creaminess into our taste buds. It is comfort food.”

The Philippines’s jewel, Eden started the trend of carton cheeses in the country. It’s a favorite of moms for making dishes creamy and delicious recipes and providing vitamins and minerals including Calcium, Vitamin A and B2 to their families.

And on June 4, Eden Cheese is celebrating its National Cheese Day! It’s yet another time to rediscover the goodness of cheese in a dish.

Earlier this year, Eden has already started its nation-wide campaign of bringing the cheesy goodness of its products to every fiesta in the country. They encourage everyone to choose goodness and came up with the #ChooseGoodness to promote their project.

But what does it mean to #ChooseGoodness?

To choose goodness is to choose an exceptional life by doing our very best every time and in every way. To choose goodness is looking after the smallest details and maintaining quality standards in whatever we do, be it simple or not.

Eden has consistently and successfully showed how its “lusoglakas” nutrients, plus the fact that it’s packed with milk and real cheese are essential to making everyday dishes more special for the family. Thus, the brand is encouraging others to do the same through its #ChooseGoodness campaign.

Anna Sapitan, the category manager for Meals of Mondelez Philippines, the maker of Eden Cheese, mused about the campaign:

“Our brand stands for the belief that we can all do better, and choose to be exceptional.

That is why this year, we are driving this change, and encouraging everyone to #ChooseGoodness with the help of our delicious Eden Cheese.”

Eden will continue to support fiestas over the Philippines, all year-round. Fiesta celebrations are definitely marked in the calendars of Filipinos and as a heritage brand, it will be part of that. It will bring to life its new campaign by setting up booths to sample products, selling limited edition cheese keepers with fiesta designs and giving families a more special dish when they use Eden cheese.

The cheese that you grew up with will continue to deliver more good products. Watch out for the events on June 4 as it brings nostalgic feelings on your meals.

Gulu Gulu is now in the Philippines

Everyone I know they like milk tea and takoyaki so much. Honestly, I don’t drink milk tea but when I taste the Gulu Gulu milk tea I began to like it. Their takoyaki is also different because of the toppings which is with the pork floss or tuna floss.

Gulu Gulu Officers

I would like also to share how Gulu Gulu started, Mr. Guo Weixiong, a Guangzhou-born man, had in1997. The dream was simple – he wanted to spread the Guanzhou tea culture in his own country with the help of his Taiwanese friends. And he discovered that young people love to eat while walking. Since then, he spent his time researching on the eating habits of the young ones, even until midnight.

Until one night, he found himself hungry. He then took a milk tea and as he gulped, he heard a lovely sound of “Gülü gülü”. This sound made him feel excited. With his dream in mind, he decided to create a food brand that belongs to him and also belongs to young people. Thus, this brand of milk tea and octopus balls, Gülü gülü was born.

Since its opening in 1997, the footprints have been spread across 15 provinces across the country. More than 50 cities, with many outstanding employees and more than 500 chain stores. The tea culture has now reached the Philippines. Gülü gülü’s first store in the Philippines is located at Savemore Nagtahan, Santa Mesa, Manila.

Yes, milk tea shops and takoyaki (octopus balls) stores have been popping out like mushrooms everywhere here in the Philippines, but Gülü gülü is now here to set the difference and you will taste the difference! Spread the good news and they have other drinks that they serve not only milk tea.

Don’t miss to visit Gulu Gulu and you can see the difference!

Celebrate Rebisco@55 with the release of Special Edition Designer Cans

When you talk about biscuit I always think of Rebisco, aside from one year older than me, their slogan is true sarap kasama sarap kasalo. I can attest that Rebisco Assorted Biscuit is Pinoy all time favorite and became a part of Filipino tradition like a pasalubong lovingly carried to waiting family members in many homecomings; a favorite merienda fare; a much-loved snack passed around during family gatherings, big and small. The Rebisco Assorted Biscuits Tin Can is one of the most iconic fixtures in a Filipino home.

As Rebisco celebrates its 55th year anniversary, the brand collaborated with 4 local artists to create artworks specifical for the launch of the new Special Edition Designer Cans. L-R: Noric Ng, Rebisco Vice-President of Operations; Lady Luzano-Cruz, Category Manager; Roel Obemio, Artist; Migs Villanueva, Artist; Heart Evangelista, Host and Rebisco Ambassador; Lulu dela Peña, Marketing Communications Head; Chico Garcia, Host; Aris Bagtas, Artist; Joseph Bañez, Artist; Katherine Simundo, Rebisco Vice-President of Marketing

Last November 7, 2018, Rebisco celebrates its 55th anniversary and the growth of Rebisco parallels the Filipino culture. Over the past 55 years, Rebisco has grown into a formidable brand, thanks to the Filipino’s undying love and support, allowing it to grow into what it is today. As a fledgling company, Rebisco started with very simple offerings of biscuits and crackers packed into a can with images of the biscuits. Over time, the packaging evolved, soon showcasing family-themed art works as well.

Rebisco celebrates its anniversary by launching their newest special edition designer tin can, which serves as a canvas on which the Filipino story is printed. These miniature versions are designed to show how Rebisco is intertwined with the Filipino story, as captured in food practices and traditions illustrated by four highly acclaimed artists. In doing so, the well-loved tin can evolves into a canvas that fulfills the brand’s vision to recognize the work and talent of Filipino artists.

Heart Evengelista-Escudero & DJ Chico Garcia

During the celebration I had a chance to meet the four of the country’s talented contemporary artists bybeautifully using the tin can as the canvas through which they can capture local color. Also by collaborating with Rebisco, they aim to shine the light on Filipino artistry and culture in a tradition that Rebisco has created. Alongside these artists, celebrity and visual artist Heart Evangelista-Escudero plus radio DJ Chico Garcia celebrated the launch as official event hosts for this prestigious event.

Here are the four artists:

1) Migs Villanueva – a Palanca-awardee visual artist, uses bold pastel colors and wanderlust compositions to invite Filipinos to see their own childhood experiences in her works.

2) Aris Bagtas – shows the Filipinos’ identity through his folk, religious and abstract works,  inspiring people to create a country where family values, traits and traditions are not forgotten.

3) Roel Obemio – a member of the famed Saturday Group,  uses storybook characters and Filipino family-oriented imagery that convey whimsy and fantasy.

4) Joseph “Otep” Bañez – who made his own brand of Filipino Pop-Social Realism that took the market by storm, creates detailed renditions combined with playful colors and hilarious settings.

This new masterpieces are featured on the tin can’s outer packaging. There are four sets of special edition designer cans, and inside are assorted premium biscuits, crackers, cookies and wafers – all-time favorites that people love to snack on and share. Rebisco’s Special Edition Designer Can will once again be part of the Filipino heritage. Express your support for local by gifting your family and friends with Rebisco’s special edition designer cans, and share with them a taste of our rich Filipino culture.

“Every Pinoy family has a story to tell and through the years, we make these stories come to life through our products.Rebisco’s Special Edition Designer Cans support local not only through taste, but through art.We at Rebisco believe that life is a constant journey of growing and refining who we are. Thus, we find a new twist to an old product to rekindle interest for it while continuing our tradition to let the tin can serve as an art canvas that tells the stories and values of Filipino families,” said Ms. Lulu dela Peña, the Marketing Communications Head of Rebisco.

Retailing for php175.00 SRP, these are now available at leading supermarkets nationwide, namely Robinsons, Puregold, Waltermart, Rustans, and Shopwise. Starting November 15, 2018, you can also buy online via www.honestbee.ph.

OCTOBOY Japanese Takoyaki Restobar, Tomas Morato

Looking for a Japanese restaurant in Quezon City? Well you cannot miss OCTOBOY in Tomas Morato, QC corner Scout Lozano St. They just transfer here last February of this year with much bigger, nice interior design and I like very much the ambiance. I have been here three times already so when I was invited I was excited to go back not because 3 blocks away from our house but I love the new food that their offerings and Japanese food is my favorite.

We had a chance to meet and talk to the owner, Mr. Giovanni Cheng. He discussed their specialty, Tokoyaki and their new Angus Steak with a warm and honest smile like the foods that his restobar offers. Mr. Cheng also wants to provide their customers with quality food and excellent service. Then we were given a chance to taste the Octoboy’s all-time favorites, their new menu and best-tasting offerings.

I like almost all the food serves here in OCTOBOY but of course I have a top picks and they are the following:

  1. Octopus Takoyaki – Takoyaki balls that are made up of flour that consist of fresh octopus and veggies. It consist of 6 large pieces with bonito flakes on top and drizzles of mayo and okonomiyaki sauce. This is so much flavors that melts in your mouth and more tastier that you will finish the whole thing.
  2. Yakiudon Shrimp – Their udon noodles were perfectly cooked with fresh veggies with 5 pieces of fried breaded shrimp tempura on top. It was a very tasty with a curry mayo into the dish.
  3. Crispy Gyoza – This is not the usual steam dumplings but they serve it fried. It’s more tastier because of the sauce that enhanced the flavors.
  4. Kani Salad – This is not the usual Japanese mango but this made of vinaigrette as its dressing with Japanese mayo on top. This Kani is also with fresh & crisp greens, cucumber with sweet mangoes, kani strips, tobilo and wakame.
  5. Tempura – This is very popular Japanese dish with deep-fried vegetables and seafood that is coated in a very light and airy batter that is very crispy to perfection. This is best served hot with tempura dipping sauce, commonly garnished with grated daikon radish.
  6. Other favorites: Tuna/Salmon Sashimi and Donburi Rice (Gyudon, Katsudon and Unagidon).
