Together, DOLE and McDonald’s Philippines work to improve job prospects for Filipino adolescents

Yang, CEO and President of McDonald’s Philippines, Margot Torres, Managing Director of McDonald’s Philippines, and Ben Marasigan, Vice President for Human Capital Group of McDonald’s Philippines, during the MOA signing last July 14, 2023

McDonald’s Philippines, which is mainly owned and run by Golden Arches Development Corporation (GADC), reaffirms its commitment to helping the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) create jobs for Filipino students. Last July 14, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the joint implementation of the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) was signed, formally establishing the renewed partnership.

In order to hire out-of-school children, displaced workers’ dependents, and working students, McDonald’s first collaborated with DOLE for SPES back in 2011. Since then, McDonald’s has provided over 16,000 underprivileged youngsters with employment opportunities so they can finish their schooling and obtain practical work experience. This year, GADC plans to continue that commitment by committing to its goal of 1,441 SPES beneficiaries for 2023.

“As we open more McDonald’s stores across the country, we see to it that as our business grows, so does our positive impact in the communities we are present in. We continue to partner with government institutions like DOLE to help us offer quality employment for Filipinos who will not only receive an opportunity to earn but also gain life-long skills from the world-class training we offer,” said Margot B. Torres, Managing Director of McDonald’s Philippines.

The company’s recognition of the importance of education and skill-building allows it to continue empowering the youth by welcoming them as part of its McDonald’s crew. As such, the company also partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) for its Alternative Workforce Program that offers work-based training positions for 5,000 unemployed and out-of-school youths through YouthWorksPH, providing beneficiaries with financial knowledge, skills, and access to resources necessary to effectively manage finances through adulthood.

McDonald’s Philippines upholds its commitment to its purpose of creating jobs and offering fair employment to all as one of the biggest employers in the nation. In order to help Filipinos from all walks of life flourish and be their best selves, McDonald’s, a persistent supporter of diversity and equality, creates a joyful and welcoming atmosphere for everyone, regardless of color, age, gender, or sexual orientation.

The organization was nevertheless able to function despite the difficulties the epidemic brought about thanks to their unwavering resolve and unwavering faith in the procedure and in our Lord Almighty. (From left to right) SM Prime Energy Consultant Jaime Patinio, SM Prime Chief Finance Officer John Nai Peng Ong, SM Prime President Jeffrey Lim, CREC Chairman Edgar Saavedra, CREC President & CEO Oliver Tan, CREC Sr. Manager Sales & Energy Trading Jerard Garcia

On July 11, 2023, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) and Citicore Renewable Energy Company (CREC) agreed to work together to promote renewable energy.

Through this collaboration, SM Prime would obtain up to 90 Megawatts (MWac) of its energy needs from CREC’s new Lumbangan Solar Power Plant in Tuy, Batangas. Beginning in the first part of 2024, the long-term agreement will take effect. This is in accordance with the Department of Energy’s Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) policies.

This development reinforces CREC and SM Prime’s dedication to the Department of Energy’s aim to increase the Philippines’ share of renewable energy supply to 35% by 2030.

“This partnership marks our strong commitment to providing sustainable operations in our developments nationwide. It is aligned with SM Prime’s target of achieving net zero by the year 2040. SM Prime ensures that its risk-informed investments catalyze sustainable development and positive change in the communities where it operates,” said Mr. John Ong, SM Prime Chief Finance Officer.

The partnership with SM Prime is the latest blue-chip firm partner for CREC, demonstrating the organization’s strong performance and superior customer service.

“We are happy to partner with SM Prime in providing clean and safe renewable energy for their power requirements,” said Mr. Oliver Tan, CREC President. “We believe that their support and trust in us through this partnership reflects our commitment as a renewable energy provider, and we are glad that SM Prime shares in our vision of a sustainable future,” Mr. Tan added.

Urban farming and the SM Foundation: A Founder’s Dream

SM City North Edsa

The SM Foundation, through its Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan on Sustainable Agriculture Program (KSK-SAP), is in charge of this Urban Farming effort. It aims to enhance the farming community, promote environmental awareness, increase food security, and offer marginalized urban communities chances to earn a living. A thorough program of urban farming methods, product creation, marketing, and fundamental accounting are provided through the KSK-SAP in field schools that are strategically positioned.

Over 260 trainings on sustainable agriculture have been successfully performed by the KSK program, helping a total of 28,550 farmers. Participants in these trainings have been exposed to sustainable farming modules that encourage the development of wholesome, high-quality vegetables and fruits in both rural and urban settings.

SM City Roxas

The KSK program has successfully conducted over 260 sustainable agricultural trainings, benefiting a total of 28,550 farmers. These trainings have taken place in both rural and urban settings, where participants have been exposed to sustainable farming modules that promote the cultivation of nutritious, high-quality vegetables and fruits.

SM City Clark

Partnering with the SM Foundation, SM Supermalls, and SM Markets are the following government agencies; the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Tourism, and the Quezon City Government. Each government organization and LGU plays a vital role in maintaining the viability of the program, and so that no stone is left unturned in ensuring its success

As an example, the SM Foundation has brought SM Supermalls and SM Markets into the picture so that as these urban farmers successfully harvest, they’re given an opportunity to market and sell their produce at the Sunday Markets that are now being held in several malls across the nation. When the produce reaches a volume that goes beyond this Sunday marketing mechanism, the SM Markets offer other alternatives.

SM City Naga

It’s about creating integration and circularity so that a mini-economic ecosystem is realized. After all, it can’t be about teaching them what and how to farm and then leaving them with no outlet with which to monetize this harvest. The SM Foundation creates these strategic partnerships so that true income opportunities become part of the overall scenario.

SM City Cabanatuan

Who would have imagined that Henry Sy, Sr.’s vision from back in 2007 would be so remarkably prescient in foretelling the growing issues and challenges we now face in agriculture, sustainable food production, food security, and urban development? The SM Foundation is very happy to continue and fulfill this vision and dream.

The creation of a sustainable environment is what SM accomplishes. We continue to achieve key sustainability milestones, from being the first to incorporate renewable energy in mall buildings to putting energy-saving technology into place.

Partnership between SM Supermalls and Mesa ni Misis for the healthiest SuperMoms Meetup

Photo shows (from left): Ms. Patti Grandidge-Herrera, Mompreneur, Model & Endorser; Ms. Juana Manahan-Yupangco, Food Security and Nutrition Expert; and Ms. Dimples Romana, Celebrity Mom

In preparation for Nutrition Month, SM Supermalls and Mesa ni Misis collaborated to host the healthiest SuperMoms Meetup on Saturday, July 22, at the SM Megamall Event Atrium.

SuperMoms gathered once more for the greatest and grandest super mom convention, which also served as the publication date for Juana’s Table, Juana Manahan Yupangco’s most recent cookbook for Mesa ni Misis.

“We SuperMoms hold the power to shape the future of our children’s health. By embracing a plant-based diet and introducing it to our families, we can ensure that our little ones grow up strong, vibrant, and armed with the necessary tools to lead a healthy and fulfilled life.” said Grace Magno, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Marketing.

Through the recipe book, SM Supermalls and Mesa ni Misis sought to inform mothers of the value of a sustainable and healthy diet. The book, which was written by Yupangco, a champion of food security and a supporter of regional farmers and vegetables, is full of inexpensive and healthy meal ideas that mothers can easily prepare in their kitchens using the finest produce found at the SM Sunday Market.

During the event, participants were treated to a cooking demo by Yupangco, who was then joined by celebrities and certified SuperMoms, Dimples Romana and Patti Grandidge Herrera who whipped up a veggie gimbap using fresh, local ingredients. They showcased how easily one can create a delicious and healthy meal for the whole family using one of the many recipes found in the book. Also, moms got the chance to discover how to practice sustainability in the household through cooking.

The meetup featured on-ground activities for moms such as the SuperMoms Club Photo wall where SuperMoms got to take photos with their goodie bags and a raffle draw where lucky SuperMoms won special prizes and other awesome surprises from partners and sponsors.

Started in 2018, SM Supermalls’ SuperMoms Club is the Philippines’ largest mommy community on Facebook. Its on-ground event, the SuperMoms Meetup, has become an avenue to further build a stronger community of inspiring women and super mommas who uplift, support, and encourage each other.

“This meetup was designed with your well-being in mind. We want to make you feel valued and cared for, and at the same time, we want to give you a voice to be heard at home, in the workplace, and in your community. Your SM Supermalls family will always be here for you, listening to you and understanding your needs and helping you throughout your motherhood journey,” said Juana Manahan Yupangco.

SM Markets, SM Store, Fully Booked, Viu, NutriAsia, UnMeat, Téviant, Skin Poem, Designer Blooms, and Blims Furniture supported the healthiest SuperMoms Club meetup in the metro.

Happy Green Run at Vermosa thrilled both casual and competitive runners, as well as pets and their owners

At the recent annual Green Run held on Ayala Land’s 740-hectare property in Imus, Cavite, competitive athletes, recreational runners, and dog lovers all had a great time jogging in the pollution-free, lush green environs of the Vermosa Estates.

The multi-level run, which pushed physical and mental health, saved the world, and celebrated the marvels of nature and its inhabitants, drew 2,550 people and 256 dogs of diverse breeds.

Numerous participants took on the challenge of the Green Run in several categories, including 21K, 10K, 5K, 3K, and the recently added 1K Dog Run, including professional athletes, athletes in training, novices, young and elderly, and devoted pet owners.

Fur parents ran, walked and skipped along the picturesque route, with cute Yorkies, Poodles and ShihTzus, small to medium sized Beagles, Jack Russells and Aspins running alongside Belgian Malinois, German Shephereds, Retrievers and giant Mastiffs.

The Dog Run was a welcome addition to the Green Run – Vermosa Estates’ very own running event that features different running distance categories to suit individual runners’ fitness levels. Established in 2022 to serve as an inspirational, feel-good event after the pandemic to celebrate life, good health, fitness and the great outdoors, this 2023 edition introduced a Dog Run for pet lovers and their fur babies.

The Dog Run slots were the first to be filled up, showing how much Filipinos love their dogs and that the four-legged runners are very much a part of the family.

Pet parents and fur babies showed up dressed in their Green Run running gear — a Green Run bib for the human and a fetching dog bandana with a bone ID tag for the fur baby.

Some dogs ran with the wind, while dogs with shorter legs ran gingerly alongside their fur parents. Some dogs tried to make friends with other dogs along the short trail, while some dogs asked their humans to carry them to the finish line.

“Thank you, Vermosa for introducing a Dog Run to the Green Run this year. This heartwarming activity gave us great moments to remember with our pets. It was a super experience and I’m so happy that my dog’s happy. Looking forward to the Dog Run again next year,” said lawyer Marco Lozada who ran with his retriever Carter.

“We were overwhelmed with the response to the Green Run this year. There was a big increase in runners and it was so delightful to see many dog lovers and their dogs along the trail. We are proud to say that Vermosa’s beautiful, natural surroundings and feet-friendly streets and walkways made the experience fun and safe for everyone. This is really a safe, healthy environment for humans and animals alike,” said Lani Tan, Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub General Manager.

“Vermosa is all about promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. A healthy, well-balanced life is not just physical wellness but also mental wellness. A feel-good activity like the Dog Run has so many physical and mental benefits for both dog owners and their pets that keeps both of them in tip-top shape. We will keep on staging the Green Run each year because we are committed to promote a healthy lifestyle and a love of the environment,” said Moses J. Aragones, Vermosa Estates Development Manager.

The Haribon Foundation’s Adopt-A-Seedling Program will receive a portion of the Green Run’s revenues in order to further the foundation’s long-term goal of preserving biodiversity and ecosystems.

FPG Insurance, MILO Philippines, SunLife, JGO Mart, Doggo Flask, Alaxan, Seda Hotel Nuvali, Merrell, Fitbar, Runnr, Toby’s, Pocari Sweat, Oishi, Equal Sugar, Healthway Qualimed Hospital, and Immuntab Multivitamins all provided support for The Green Run 2023.
