A brand-new, full-length Filipino ballet titled “Ibalon” serves as the 37th season opener for the Philippine Ballet Theatre

The Philippine Ballet Theater’s goal is to share traditional Filipino stories that reflect the culture of our nation. They want to write and perform tales that are profoundly anchored in our history. A brand-new, full-length Filipino ballet titled “Ibalon” will launch PBT’s 37th season. Artistic Director and Choreographer Ronilo Jaynario draws inspiration from the well-known Bicolano epic “Ibalon” and concentrates on the romance between Handyong (The Warrior) and Oryol (The Cursed Creature). Jaynario makes a point of explaining that his choreography is a reimagining of a love story set against a background of Philippine mythology. He used artistic license and added nuances and plot twists to the story to produce a potent illustration of love in motion. He wants to fascinate his audience with vibrant dances drawn from Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon.

This story will be luxuriously told with original music by Paulo Zarate. Zarate explains that in creating the music, his approach was an exaggeration of what the music would have sounded like in ancient times. Filipino instruments in that period were more percussive and rhythmic. He took this into consideration but added bold and moving melodies, incorporating details of Filipino elements that he researched on, to make the music more epic. Zarate wanted to create music that would have a theatrical or cinematic effect on the audience, pushing them at the edge of their seat in excitement or sweeping them into the love story of Handyong and Oryol.

You will embark on a journey into the core of our culture and history with Matthew Davo’s portrayal of the warrior Handyong and Eloisa Jessa Tangalin’s portrayal of the doomed princess Oryol. The telling of our ancestors’ tales will come to life with song and dance thanks to PBT’s emerging talents.

Zarate and Jaynario shared a desire to make a lasting contribution to the heritage of Philippine dance. Old Filipino tales are no longer discussed, but ingenuity can change that. A beautiful representation of our culture can be made using both new and old elements. From July 28 to July 29, 2023, PBT’s “Ibalon” will be shown in the elegant Samsung Theater. The fundraising effort for the 65th Anniversary of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards will profit entirely from sales on July 29.
