Amid Questions Over Governance, Country Club Members Demand Greater Transparency

While I was quietly sipping my morning coffee in a cozy place somewhere in Ortigas, someone leaned over and mentioned the latest news from the country club in Metro Manila—and I was stunned as I listened to what she had to say.

A growing number of members at a prominent country club are now backing a formal petition demanding greater openness and accountability from the club’s leadership.

Documents currently circulating among members show that a concerned group is urging the board to hold an extraordinary general meeting before the end of the year. The proposed agenda outlines several governance and operational matters that, according to the petition, need urgent explanation.

The petition outlines more than 20 specific questions directed at senior leadership. Many of these focus on governance practices, including whether certain decisions—particularly those involving senior management—were properly authorized by the board. One issue drawing heightened attention is the reported suspension of the club’s operations head, which has sparked calls for clarity on due process and executive authority.

The members leading the effort maintain that their actions are procedural, aimed at protecting the club’s integrity and strengthening proper governance. They reaffirm a core belief that the club “belongs to its members,” and that transparency is “non-negotiable.”

While the board has yet to issue an official response, a meeting has been set for December 20 to address the situation. Members hope the discussion will bring clarity and help restore trust within the community.

The pop group PREP, headquartered in London, and Thai musician James Alyn collaborate on the new song “Don’t Worry”

The poignant new single “Don’t Worry” is a collaboration between London-based pop band PREP and Thai artist James Alyn (former 1/2 of HYBS). James’ warm, emotional tone and PREP’s smooth blend of soft pop, funk, and soul complement each other to create a sound that feels both intimate and timeless, offering comfort and hope.

A heartfelt interaction with a fan served as the inspiration for “Don’t Worry.” She informed me that my songs got her through some of her worst moments. I wrote this song in the hopes that it might serve as a lighthouse for those in need. I sincerely appreciate my fans supporting me through good times and bad. I will always be there for them, just like the saying, “Even in another life, you can find me by your side.”

Combining soothing vocals, lush synths, and PREP’s signature groove, “Don’t Worry” is a reminder to keep faith through difficult moments.

“It was the night I opened for PREP in Taipei,” James recalls. “After the show, I and the guys from PREP went to Kuo from Sunset Rollercoaster’s house and jammed for a bit, not intending to make anything of it. A year later, I found a voice memo from that night and built the rest of the song from there.”

His image as a trendsetter in the music industry is cemented by his repertoire, which includes both cherished HYBS classics and innovative new material that he has composed and played.

CDO Marks 50 Years With the Holiday’s Perfect Pair: CDO Holiday Ham and Danes Queso de Bola

Manila, Philippines – For 50 years, CDO Foodsphere, has been part of Filipino Christmas celebrations, from Noche Buena gatherings to holiday gifting with loved ones. This year, CDO marks its golden anniversary by spotlighting two enduring symbols of the Filipino holiday table: CDO Holiday Ham and Danes Queso de Bola.

At the media event “Unwrapping the Holiday’s Perfect Pair” held at Manila House, CDO welcomed guests for an immersive holiday experience designed to spark creativity, connection, and celebration. The program showcased how the perfect pairing of CDO Holiday Ham and Danes Queso de Bola continues to make gatherings special, whether served during Noche Buena, shared at parties, or given as thoughtful gifts.

A ThreePart Program That Brought Christmas to Life

Food Flight: A Flavor Journey With the Perfect Pair

Guests enjoyed a guided tasting featuring three recipe applications using CDO Holiday Ham and Danes Queso de Bola, a playful but elevated showcase of how the duo can transform festive meals. The Manila House resident chef created especially for the event Holiday Ham & Pineapple Skewers with Honey Mustard Glaze, Danes Queso de Bola Truffle Croquettes, and Holiday Ham & Queso de Bola Breakfast Pandesal.

The segment highlighted the versatility of both products, familiar enough to feel nostalgic, yet dynamic enough to inspire new traditions.

Holiday Tablescaping: Style Meets Celebration

Next, Laureen Uy, recognized as a fashion blogger and a leading voice in lifestyle and entertaining, showed how holiday hosting can be elevated through thoughtful tablescaping. Known for her bold combinations, refined eye for detail, and innate sense of visual storytelling, she was the perfect fit for this workshop, demonstrating how styling a table can set the tone for a warm and memorable holiday celebration.

Her approach balanced modern aesthetics with personal warmth, layering textures and linens to instantly add depth, mixing warm neutrals with metallic accents for a festive palette, adding meaningful touches like handwritten cards and fresh herbs, and making her centerpieces the CDO Holiday Ham and Danes Queso de Bola.

Laureen reminded guests that preparing a table is an act of care, more than decoration, it’s a gesture that tells loved ones they’re welcome, even before the first bite is served.

Masterclass: Perfect Pairing Charcuterie Workshop

The most interactive segment of the afternoon was a hands-on masterclass facilitated by Chef Marvin Agustin, who guided attendees in building their own festive charcuterie boards. While many first met him on screen, he has since become one of the country’s most celebrated restaurateurs, with multiple beloved dining concepts under his belt, including his newest restaurant that recently earned the prestigious Bib Gourmand recognition from the Michelin Guide. He emphasized that great charcuterie balances both taste and storytelling, contrasting textures, colors, and shapes arranged with intention.

What made this segment memorable was its experiential nature, every attendee created and took home a personalized holiday board, making the workshop not only instructional but personal and fun.

The Holiday’s Perfect Pair, More Than Traditions, A Shared Experience

Throughout the event, CDO’s message was clear: the holiday season is about coming home, to flavors, to milestones, and to the people who matter.

“As CDO celebrates its 50th anniversary, this moment reminds us of what matters most, Filipino families brought together by food that feels like home,” said Dr. Charmaine OngCastro, Senior Vice President for Purchasing, Treasury and Corporate Governance. “Every home that welcomes CDO into their celebrations becomes part of our story, and we are grateful to be part of theirs.”

“What we appreciate most about gatherings like today is seeing how people bring our products to life, not just through recipes, but through stories,” shared Jason Ong, Vice President for Emerging Businesses. “If these stories reach more families and inspire moments around the table this Christmas, then we know we’re creating moments that truly matter.”

The true essence of Christmas is the joy of giving, choosing gifts that carry warmth and meaning. For many Filipino families, that joy is often expressed through food that feels personal and thoughtful. Whether it’s prepared at home or shared with others, the right pairing can instantly make the season special.

For that special regalo, it’s the two that counts, CDO Holiday Ham, made from 100% premium whole meat of tender pork hind leg, the best cut for hams, perfectly paired with Danes Queso de Bola, with its bright red ball and creamy, indulgent flavor that brings festivity and nostalgia to every holiday table, the kind of rich, familiar taste that instantly reminds you that Christmas has arrived.

“We invite everyone to rediscover why this holiday pairing continues to hold its place at the center of Filipino celebrations. Every family celebrates Christmas differently, but this simple Holiday pairing remains constant, one that brings comfort, familiarity, and connection,” said Marketing Manager Janna OngSantos.

A Christmas Celebration Through and Through

Beyond the three signature segments, guests enjoyed a full Christmas table and grazing spread, complete with CDO Holiday Ham and Danes Queso de Bola, a visual and flavorful reminder of why these products remain musthaves on every Filipino holiday table.

CDO executives Jao Ong, Senior Customer Development Manager, Bernice Jalgalado, Vice President for Marketing, and Sammy Sih, Executive Vice President, also graced the celebration, reinforcing the company’s collective commitment to shaping the next 50 years of meaningful mealtimes.

The afternoon ended with a delicious lunch, more festive moments, and guests taking home their handcrafted charcuterie boards. Long after the season ends, what stays with us are not the presents we opened, but the moments we shared, and the people who made us feel at home.

Literacy and Disability Inclusion Advocate Zacarias Mansing Jr. Crowned Cebuana Lhuillier’s 2025 Happiest Pinoy Among 500,000 Entries Nationwide

Cebuana Lhuillier has officially named Zacarias Mansing Jr., a passionate literacy and disability inclusion advocate, as the 2025 Happiest Pinoy. His remarkable journey of transforming personal adversity into a nationwide mission for children’s literacy resonated deeply across the country. Selected from more than 500,000 entries, his win marks one of the most extraordinary achievements in the history of Cebuana Lhuillier’s pioneering advocacy.

The awarding ceremony, held last December 2 at Dusit Thani Manila, highlighted the depth and diversity of this year’s competition. Zacarias first emerged as one of the ten national category winners before advancing to the final round, where he stood alongside inspiring finalists representing youth and senior citizens, entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities, OFWs, members of the workforce, the LGBTQ+ community, creatives, indigenous peoples, and Cebuana Lhuillier clients.

A distinguished panel of judges—comprising public servants, media professionals, social innovators, athletes, and former Happiest Pinoy awardees—evaluated the finalists through a comprehensive process rooted in four criteria: Resilience; Optimism and Genuine Happiness; Champion of Hope and Impact; and an X-Factor reflecting authenticity.

Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier Inc., emphasized the significance of Zacarias’s win: “Zacarias reminds us that true strength is not the absence of hardship but the courage to lift others as we rise. His life—rooted in faith, grit, and service—captures exactly what the Happiest Pinoy seeks to celebrate: joy that transforms communities and inspires lasting change.”

Zacarias’s story is a testament to that strength. After an accident abroad in 2012 left him paralyzed, he returned home determined to turn his challenges into purpose. Guided by his DRISO values—Determination, Resilience, Inspiration, Service, and Optimism—he launched the Books for Kids Project in 2017. From his wheelchair, he has traveled to more than 300 remote public schools and reached over 50,000 students, championing literacy, disability inclusion, and hope across Negros Oriental. “Being a Happiest Pinoy is about having a spirit that trusts God in all circumstances, and hands that are always ready to reach out to those in need,” he shared.

Zacarias’s triumph is more than a personal victory—it is a powerful reminder that purpose can emerge from pain, and that one person’s resolve can ignite lasting change. His work continues to inspire communities, uplift young learners, and strengthen the movement that Cebuana Lhuillier began: a celebration of joy that endures, heals, and transforms.

To provide “The Gift of Protection” to thousands of daily commuters throughout December Malayan Insurance Co., Inc. (MICO), one of the country’s leading non-life insurance providers, has partnered with LRT-1 to power a month-long holiday campaign.

This initiative offers complimentary Personal Accident (PA) insurance coverage to LRT-1 commuters throughout the entire month of December. The initiative, dubbed “The Gift of Protection,” aims to provide peace of mind to thousands of Filipino commuters during the busiest travel season of the year, when millions rush through Metro Manila’s railways for holiday shopping, year-end gatherings, and trips to provincial bus terminals for the Christmas break.

“December is the most hectic time for Filipino commuters—carrying gifts, rushing to catch buses home, navigating crowded stations,” said Eden Tesoro, Chief Operating Officer of Malayan Insurance. “We wanted to cut through the holiday chaos with a meaningful gesture that reminds Filipinos that protection isn’t an expense—it’s a gift, and one we’re honored to give this Christmas season.”

The campaign features a full station takeover at LRT-1’s Gil Puyat Station, a key transit point for commuters heading to Makati’s business districts and nearby provincial bus terminals. A fully-wrapped LRT-1 train will also traverse the line throughout December, spreading the message of safety and protection across the metro.

Commuters can avail of the complimentary PA insurance coverage by simply scanning QR codes displayed throughout Gil Puyat Station and on the branded train. The seamless digital process requires only basic information—name and mobile number—and issues a digital policy certificate instantly.

“This partnership with LRT-1 allows us to meet Filipinos where they are, literally,” Tesoro added. “We want to bring protection to the forefront during a time they need it most; that’s what future-proofing protection means to us.”

The campaign reflects Malayan Insurance’s broader commitment to making insurance more accessible and relevant to everyday Filipinos, shifting the perception of insurance from a burdensome expense to a caring investment in one’s safety and future.

REX Champions a More Human Future at AECON 2025: Special Edition on Education 5.0

In a world where technology continuously influences how people live, learn, and connect, one question remains urgent: how do we keep education human?

Rex Education placed that question at the heart of this year’s Annual Educators’ Congress (AECON 2025): Special Edition on Education 5.0, held on October 23 and 24, at the Gallio Events Hall in Parañaque City. With the theme “Agentive, Ethical, Connected, Open, and Nurturing,” the congress gathered school leaders, teachers, and education advocates from across the country for 2 days of reflective conversations and practical exchanges focused on putting people at the center of learning.

Reclaiming the Heart of Education

While Education 4.0 was driven by innovation and digital transformation, Education 5.0 calls for balance. It seeks to place humanity back at the core of learning, embracing technology with care, empathy, and purpose.

In his opening remarks, Rex Education CEO Don Timothy Buhain shared a heartfelt reflection on AECON’s significance and the deeper meaning of Education 5.0, emphasizing that “education has always been, and will always be, about people.” He explained that Education 5.0 is to make sure that as we move forward, we never forget the human being at the center of it all. “Technology will always be a means and a tool, but people will always be the purpose,” he emphasized.

What Education 5.0 means for REX

This year’s theme—Agentive, Ethical, Connected, Open, and Nurturing—defines REX’s vision for Education 5.0. Each word carries a practical and moral commitment.

Being Agentive is about being self-directed and purposeful; also being involved and capable of taking action. Meanwhile, being Ethical concerns choices guided by our values, having integrity, compassion, and moral discernment. Being Connected points to the relationships that make learning possible—with schools, families, and communities. Moreover, being Open stands for inclusivity, accessibility, and transparency. Nurturing brings all these elements together. It calls for learning environments that support the whole person—intellect, emotion, and spirit—so learners can grow with confidence and succeed in life.

Highlights of AECON 2025

The first day of AECON featured an interactive Pre-Conference Session led by Dr. Edizon A. Fermin, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the National Teachers College. Through hands-on activities and reflective exercises, participants explored three key tenets: Institutionalizing Less is More, Opening Pathways and Doorways, and Investing in Immersion, gaining practical tools to help build a stronger, more future-ready Senior High School program.

The main conference on October 24 opened with the Learner Panel Spotlight, “Kami Naman Talaga Sana,” and the keynote address, “Reclaiming Humanity in Education 5.0,” by Rev. Fr. Jessel “JBoy” M. Gonzales, SJ of Ateneo de Davao University.

Two pannel discussions followed. The first panel, “Beyond Lifelong Learning: Content, Methodology, & Assessment that Matter,” featured esteemed education leaders Dr. Marlene Ferido, Dr. Violeta Valladolid, and Dr. Brando “ER” C. Palomar, moderated by Ms. Rita Atienza of the Ateneo de Manila University.

The second panel, “Of Numbers and Narratives: Quality Schools that Promote IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, Sustainability) In Focus,” featured Dr. Malcolm S. Garma and Ms. Maria Louella M. Tampinco. The session was moderated by Mr. Narcy Ador Dionisio, Executive Director of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines.

The day’s sessions concluded with a synthesis led by Dr. Edizon A. Fermin, bringing together key insights and reflections from the discussions.

A Shared Hope for the Future

Across two inspiring days, AECON 2025 became a space where educators rediscovered the heart of their work. Through

meaningful discussions and heartfelt exchanges, participants were reminded that the future of learning begins not with technology, but with people—those who teach, those who learn, and those who dare to make education better for all.

As the conference came to a close, Rex Education reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing every Filipino learner and supporting teachers and school leaders through relevant, future-ready, and deeply human learning solutions.

Because in the end, Education 5.0 is not only about adapting to the future—it’s about creating one led by heart, humanity, and purpose.
