Beyond “Hiyang”: Filipino Beauty Should Combine Science and “Feeling” – Dermorepubliq

The official Dermorepubliq booth as the official sponsor of the first-ever TikTok Beauty Fest Philippines 2025 held at Bonifacio Global City

Dermorepubliq guided makers, professionals, and enthusiasts in deeper discussions about skincare that went beyond product trends and viral routines at the inaugural TikTok Beauty Fest Philippines, which took place at Bonifacio Global City. By examining how science, self-expression, and social media interact to shape contemporary beauty practices, the event represented a turning point in TikTok’s development from a digital content platform to a physical center for beauty instruction and community involvement.

Sensitive skin and the science underlying its prevalence were the topics of one of the more talked-about workshops.

For years, ‘hiyang’ has been the measure of whether a product works. But skin compatibility isn’t just luck, it’s also chemistry,” shared Maria Gabrielle Lim, Marketing Director of Dermorepubliq, during a fireside chat.

Lim further explained that after years in the beauty industry, she has noticed how hiyang remains the most common consumer feedback among Filipinos, often tied to how “matapang” or harsh a product feels on the skin. “Sometimes we think we know enough about skincare because we do our own research online, but there is always more to uncover when you think about the scientific side,” she said.

From L–R) Maria Gabrielle Lim, Marketing Director of Dermorepubliq; Aika Vargas, Research and Development Lead of Dermorepubliq; and Dr. Jaja Lao-Ang discuss skincare beyond product trends and viral routines during the TikTok Beauty Fest Philippines 2025

Dr. Jaja Lao-Ang, a board-certified dermatologist, built on Gabbie’s observation, noting that the hiyang phenomenon is not just a matter of personal preference but rooted in biology. “There are real physiological reasons behind why some Filipinos react more strongly to certain formulations,” she explained. “Our skin has higher melanin content, which comes with both advantages and challenges. It gives us a bit more protection against UV damage, but it also makes us more prone to hyperpigmentation, irritation, and inflammation. Because of these factors, even if we have more pigment, we still need consistent sun protection. Sunscreen is essential whether you are outdoors or spending most of your time indoors.

This shift, from anecdotal belief to scientific understanding, reflects a broader change in how Filipino consumers approach skincare. A 2025 report by Galderma, found that the Philippines leads Southeast Asia in the prevalence of sensitive skin. Dermatologists attribute this to the country’s tropical climate, pollution, and higher melanin content, which make Filipino skin more reactive to sun exposure, humidity, and stronger formulations.

The rise of mindful minimalism

Dr. Lao-Ang also addressed what she called the “pressure to over-skincare.”

The biggest misconception I see is that more products mean better skin. Our skin barrier is delicate. The smarter approach is using fewer, targeted products that your skin can actually tolerate,” she said.

This “less is more” philosophy aligns with a growing global trend toward skin minimalism, simplified routines that prioritize barrier health over aggressive treatment layers.

From consumer feedback to lab reformulation

At the same session, Aika Vargas, Dermorepubliq’s Research and Development Lead, described how local research and community feedback guide the brand’s product development process.

Formulating skincare is not just about mixing actives, it is about listening,” she said. “When users tell us a product feels too strong or sticky, that feedback goes straight to the lab. Each reformulation is shaped by both data and lived experience.

It is a model increasingly seen across the local beauty scene, where social media feedback loops, dermatological insights, and in-house R&D (research and development) converge to build formulations attuned to Filipino skin realities rather than imported beauty standards.

A platform for smarter beauty

Dermorepubliq at the first-ever TikTok Beauty Fest Philippines 2025 held at Bonifacio Global City

Dermorepubliq’s active presence as the official sponsor at the TikTok Beauty Fest underscored a larger message: the growing importance of skin literacy in an industry still shaped by social media trends. As TikTok Shop Philippines’ top skincare brand, Dermorepubliq used the platform not only to engage consumers but also to encourage more informed, science-based conversations around skincare.

“Our mission has always been to help Filipinos understand what goes into their skincare and why it works for them,” said Keith Sta. Barbara, Founder and President of Dermorepubliq. “Our sensitive skin-first philosophy is shaped by the needs of Filipino skin, and peace of mind matters just as much as visible results. We want to build a community that values education as much as efficacy.”

Experts and guests alike found resonance in the conversation, pointing out that the Filipino beauty community is gradually evolving, focusing on what is proven rather than what is popular.

Experts in Eastern Communications and Cybersecurity Spread Knowledge About Growing Cyberthreats in the Philippines

Snapshot from Eastern Communications’ latest Thoughts on Tech vodcast episode with host Justin Quirino and guest speaker Maez De Guzman, Cybersecurity Leader at EY Global Delivery Services (EY GDS) Philippines

Snapshot from Eastern Communications’ latest Thoughts on Tech vodcast episode with host Justin Quirino and guest speaker Colonel Francel Padilla, Spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)

Cybercriminals are discovering new ways to take advantage of artificial intelligence as it gets more integrated into corporate operations. Eastern Communications is pushing Philippine businesses to take a more proactive approach against AI-driven cyberthreats in honor of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This issue has gotten more pressing as attacks get smarter, faster, and more difficult to identify.

In order to assist businesses in navigating this changing landscape of digital threats, the telco provider’s Thoughts on Tech vodcast series recently released special Cybersecurity Month episodes. Colonel Francel Padilla, a spokesman for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and Maez De Guzman, a cybersecurity leader at EY Global Delivery Services (EY GDS) Philippines, are featured in the episodes. Their segments explained how businesses may safeguard the country’s digital infrastructure and increase cyber resilience.

A call to strengthen the country’s cyber defense

Maez De Guzman, Cybersecurity Leader at EY Global Delivery Services (EY GDS) Philippines

De Guzman stressed that businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, must keep pace with the speed of technological change. “We’re being attacked [at] machine speed, but we’re actually defending [at] human speed,” she said, noting that adapting a stronger cybersecurity mindset begins with adopting the right frameworks, such as Zero Trust. “So, the framework actually means zero trust from its name meaning trust no one, verify everything. All the technologies now actually support zero trust — from micro segmentation, from all identity-related proxies — everyone should align to the framework of zero trust.”

Colonel Francel Padilla, Spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)

In another episode, Col. Padilla emphasized that cybersecurity is no longer confined to individual organizations but is now a matter of national defense. “Cyber has no barriers, so you cannot really say, ‘You’re intruding [into] the Philippine cyberspace.’ “There’s no such thing,” she said. She added that digital protection must extend beyond institutions to strengthen national resilience, noting, “If we have a secured country, we have a secured economy then.”

Supporting advocacy with action

Eastern Communications is backing its advocacy with practical solutions for local enterprises. In partnership with Nexusguard, a global leader in DDoS mitigation and cybersecurity, Eastern now offers DDoS-Protected Eastern IDS (Internet Direct Service), empowering businesses with seamless dedicated business internet backed by 24/7 reliable security.

According to Nexusguard’s 2025 DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Trends Report, the average size of DDoS attacks surged by 69% year-over-year, with peak attacks reaching as high as 962.2 Gbps, creating unprecedented strain on networks worldwide. The report highlights end-to-end hybrid protection solutions, combining cloud scalability and on-premise responsiveness as the most effective defense against today’s diverse DDoS threats.

For companies seeking enhanced protection, Eastern’s DDoS security solutions are also available as standalone services, ensuring continuous, efficient, and worry-free operations in today’s digital landscape.

“Eastern Communications remains steadfast in advocating for a safer, more secure digital Philippines,” said Edsel Paglinawan, Eastern Communications’ Chief Revenue and Experience Officer. “Through our Cyber Defense solutions and platforms like Thoughts on Tech, we aim to empower enterprises to build digital resilience and strengthen the Philippines’ cybersecurity ecosystem. This is part of how we continue exceeding expectations and serving with malasakit.”

Eastern Communications is reiterating its position as a reliable technology partner dedicated to safeguarding the country’s digital future and assisting Filipino businesses in being connected, competitive, and secure in an increasingly AI-driven world as cyber threats continue to change.

Jake Vargas takes center stage as the lead singer of the brand-new band Dear Dina, whose first single is “Nabighani”

Actor-musician embarks on a new creative chapter as he leads Dear Dina in their first release, “Nabighani” – an ode to young love and hesitation

Jake Vargas, an actor and musician, will embark on a new journey as Dear Dina’s frontman. The six-piece group’s official debut will be  “Nabighani.” This single presents Dear Dina’s distinct fusion of emotion, sincerity, and easygoing appeal, giving OPM a new, youthful, and heartfelt feel. “Nabighani” is a tale of connection, shyness, and love.

“Nabighani,” which is based on Jake’s real-life romance with actress Inah de Belen, depicts the moment when you meet someone who captivates you right away but nerves and hesitancy prevent you from telling them how you really feel.

“The word ‘Nabighani’ has this beautiful Filipino charm,” the band shares. “It describes that unexplainable feeling of being drawn to someone. It’s tender, emotional, and authentic — just like the story behind the song.”

Sonically, “Nabighani” mirrors the soft, dreamy energy of being torpe – shy, in love, and hopeful. Its lyrics are simple yet sincere, like a conversation with your crush filled with quiet excitement and butterflies.

The song’s creation began with casual brainstorming sessions over coffee, where the band decided to write something that would be both relatable and true to their experiences. “Tinananong namin si Jake kung ano’ng naramdaman niya nung una niyang nakilala si Inah” the band shared. “Doon nagsimula ang song –  ‘yung kilig, kaba, at ‘yung feeling na gusto mong magsalita pero pinipigilan mo.

The writing process was deeply collaborative, with each member contributing their strengths. When the band first jammed “Nabighani,” new member Louise Bayas suggested the now-iconic “sasabihin ko sa’yo” melody for the chorus, which immediately stuck. She also added a groovy bass line that locked in with the drums, filling the track with warmth and rhythm.

They describe the process as DIY – from recording drums at Victor Guison’s space (Unknown13 Pub) to using Louise’s personal recording gear.

To refine their sound, the band sought the expertise of producer Xergio Ramos, who helped shape the song’s final arrangement and direction. “Since it’s our first single, we wanted it to be perfect but not complicated,” the band shares. “Xergio really guided us in finding the right balance and bringing ‘Nabighani’ to life.”

For Dear Dina, “Nabighani” represents more than just their debut — it’s a statement of identity. “This song shows kung saan nanggagaling ang banda – mga kwento ng love, longing, at youth. Sincere and emotional siya, pero lighthearted and fun din,” they say.

Each member brings different musical influences –  from pop to rock to indie, but together they form a sound that’s uniquely Dear Dina: honest, cohesive, and deeply Filipino.

As Dear Dina prepares for their debut release, the band feels both excitement and gratitude for how far they’ve come. “It’s so fulfilling to see a song we built from scratch finally come to life,” they share. “This reminds us why we started making music – to tell stories, make people feel something, and enjoy the process together.”

Jake Vargas and Dear Dina’s song “Nabighani” allows listeners to rediscover the sweet, tense excitement of falling in love for the first time. This emotion is masterfully conveyed through authentic, relevant, and uniquely OPM music.

Nabighani by Dear Dina is currently available on all digital music platforms across the globe.

Bali’s AXEAN Festival 2025 creates new relationships and innovative futures

From world-class performances to songwriting collaborations, business matchmaking to industry dialogue, this year’s edition proved that the true rhythm of Southeast Asia lies in its spirit of community, innovation, and collaboration

AXEAN Festival 2025, which attracted around 4,000 attendees and solidified its position as one of the most significant music discovery platforms in the area, just wrapped up its most successful edition to date at Jimbaran Hub in Bali, Indonesia.

The sixth edition of AXEAN Festival 2025 offered a vibrant blend of community, conversation, and discovery, with reviews lauding its outstanding curation and innovative programming. In addition to honoring the best up-and-coming performers in the area, the festival promoted deep connections between musicians, business leaders, and international delegates, enhancing its standing as a conduit between Southeast Asia’s artistic vitality and the world music scene.

A Celebration of Discovery and Identity

Over 40 musicians performed on three stages at this year’s event, which culminated in the Club SEA Showcase, one of the weekend’s most memorable events. The showcase, which was devoted to the region’s meteoric surge in club and grassroots music, lit up the dance floor with amazing performances by Feel Koplo x Toxicdev! from Indonesia, DJ Love from the Philippines, Fauxe from Singapore, and S.O.L.E. from Thailand.

Fauxe’s set

With their unique tapestry of local textures, tropical rhythms, and theatrical flair, these artists embodied AXEAN’s ethos of celebrating regional identity in global contexts, leaving audiences in awe and critics calling it “a defining moment in Southeast Asia’s club culture.”

Beyond the stage: a Platform for Growth and Exchange

Now in its sixth year, AXEAN Festival has grown into far more than a music showcase. It has evolved into a comprehensive cultural and business platform, one that nurtures collaboration, facilitates cross-border partnerships, and accelerates the professional development of Southeast Asian artists.

Fauxe’s set

The festival’s conference programming impressed attendees with its forward-looking themes and engaging discourse. Over two days, panels and networking sessions explored vital industry topics, including:

  1. Beyond the Upload: Strategies for Long-Term Growth for Southeast Asian Artists
  2. Rethinking Music’s Footprint: Practical Pathways for Southeast Asia’s Music Scenes
  3. From Funkot to Budots: The Booming Wave of Southeast Asia’s Grassroots Dance Music
  4. Across the Pacific: Strengthening Music Ties Between New Zealand and Southeast Asia

The conference’s business matchmaking sessions and structured networking activities drew enthusiastic participation from regional and international delegates alike, creating new touring partnerships, booking opportunities, potential signings, and collaborative projects that will continue to resonate beyond festival grounds.

“The response was overwhelmingly positive,” said Mahanugru Kinzana, Head of Business & Commercial of Jimbaran Hub. “The structured networking sessions created genuine opportunities for dialogue between artists, managers, and delegates. AXEAN has become a rare space where serious industry conversations can happen within a creative, inspiring environment.”

Songwriting Camp: Building the Sound of Tomorrow

In line with its artist-first philosophy, AXEAN Festival 2025 extended its creative spirit beyond the main event through its Songwriting Camp, which brought together select artists and producers from across Asia to collaborate, co-create, and push the boundaries of regional sound.

“The songwriting camp was overflowing with talent—truly a gathering of geniuses from across Asia,” said Kinzana. “What stood out was how naturally diverse voices blended to create something fresh, yet deeply rooted in our region’s identity. For me, it reinforced a bigger realization: Southeast Asian music doesn’t just have talent, it has a distinct character that deserves a clear and strong positioning in the global music scene. The camp captured that spirit in the most inspiring way.”

AXEAN co-founder Piyapong Muenprasertdee shared the same sentiment, adding, “By the third day, something magical happened—all the artists came together to create one collective track, a true regional collaboration. More than writing songs, they build friendships and creative ecosystems that will carry forward long after the festival.”

Local Roots, Global Reach

This year also saw AXEAN deepening its ties with the local creative community through new partnerships with Jimbaran Hub and Bali-based organizations. A co-organized local music competition led to the discovery of standout talents Morbid Monke and Gozal, whose performances captivated international delegates and underscored the island’s growing relevance in the regional music map.

“Originally, we planned to feature just one winner, but the quality of the artists was so outstanding that we added a second slot,” shared Muenprasertdee. “These unexpected highlights reminded us of the importance of creating genuine opportunities for discovery and exchange.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, AXEAN Festival reaffirms its commitment to Bali as its home base, with ambitious plans to expand regionally through satellite events and stronger artist export pipelines. The next edition aims to enhance audience experience, sustainability, and global visibility, all while staying true to its core of inclusivity, collaboration, and discovery.

“We’re committed to growing the AXEAN Festival in Bali,” Kinzana asserts. “Bali offers a perfect balance: an international destination that combines serious industry engagement with world-class hospitality. Our next focus is to strengthen the story and experience of AXEAN so that more audiences connect deeply with what we stand for.”

Muenprasertdee added, “We hope to establish a permanent home for AXEAN here while also developing satellite events across the region to strengthen local ecosystems and create touring routes for our artists. Looking ahead, our strategy focuses on three key areas: (1) strengthening artist export pipelines by deepening ties with international delegates, (2) expanding fan engagement so AXEAN grows into both an industry platform and a beloved cultural festival, and (3) enhancing sustainability—financially, socially, and environmentally—so the festival can continue to thrive and evolve for years to come.”

Alsons Dev to Revamp Aldevinco in Line with Davao’s Expanding Urban Growth

Aldevinco Shopping Center 2015

Alsons Development and Investment Corporation (Alsons Dev) revealed plans to start redeveloping the Aldevinco Shopping Center site by the end of October 2025. Situated at the intersection of C.M. Recto and Roxas Avenue, the property has been a well known landmark in downtown Davao for decades. The redevelopment aims to transform the historic site into a contemporary mixed use hub that fosters the city’s ongoing progress and urban renewal while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Aldevinco Shopping Center served as one of Davao City’s earliest commercial hubs and stood as a cultural landmark for over five decades.

Established in 1965, the Aldevinco Shopping Center was among Davao City’s first commercial landmarks. For more than fifty years, it evolved from a bustling marketplace for local merchants into a cultural symbol celebrating Mindanao’s diverse heritage through its textiles, antiques, and crafts. Although it closed its doors in December 2021, its legacy lives on at Poblacion Market Central, where many of its original tenants continue to uphold the same tradition of culture, creativity, and trade.

Preparing the historic site for the future

The redeveloped property is envisioned to become a flagship mixed-use development that reflects Alsons Dev’s vision for vibrant, sustainable, and people-centric spaces.

The transformation will begin with the demolition of the buildings on the premises, a necessary step due to the structure’s age and safety considerations. The work will be carried out in sections to minimize disruption and ensure the safety of pedestrians, workers, and nearby establishments. The company is also working closely with the Office of the City Building Official (OCBO) and other relevant government agencies to ensure full compliance with local regulations.

While long-term plans are being finalized, Alsons Dev will temporarily use the 5,106-square-meter site into a paid parking facility by Q2 2026. The interim space will feature designated areas for food trucks and carts, offering convenience and new opportunities for small businesses while keeping the property active and vibrant in the heart of the city.
