The Jollibee Group has over 2,000 outlets participating in Earth Hour 2022

Jollibee Group brands participate annually in the Earth Hour initiative that aims to raise awareness on the need for collective action to protect the environment.

This year’s Earth Hour, the world’s largest initiative promoting carbon footprint reduction to combat climate change, was observed in over 2,000 Jollibee Group stores around the country.

Participating stores of Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Red Ribbon, and Greenwich turned off the lights in their stores and signages for an hour. Billboards and other out-of-home ads of Jollibee Group brands were also switched off for an hour during this period.

“Participating annually in the Earth Hour is part of our efforts in the Jollibee Group to demonstrate the commitment to helping protect the planet as an organization. Efforts like Earth Hour are important in raising more awareness among our people, our customers, and the public on the realities of climate change and the need for individual and collective action to protect the environment,” said Pepot Miñana, Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer of the Jollibee Group.

Earth Hour was founded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007 and has since developed into one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental campaigns. Every year on the final Saturday in March, the movement brings together about 190 countries and territories, all working to ensure the planet and its people have a sustainable future.

Mekeni: With your own timpla of success, rekindle your entrepreneurial passion

The people of the Philippines are resourceful and resilient. Despite the loss of livelihood and business closures that occurred as a result of the lockdowns, Filipinos’ entrepreneurial spirit never seemed to weaken. Mekeni Food Corporation, one of the country’s top food production enterprises, exemplifies the Filipinos’ unwavering entrepreneurial spirit. It began as a backyard business run by a modest Kapampangan family, but through hard work and dedication, it has evolved into a native food brand with products sold both locally and internationally.

Mekeni’s tale continues to motivate and encourage other enterprises to strive for greater heights. The company has created its own timpla of service and care over the years, despite the ups and downs it has faced. Mekeni offers their recipe for success, which Filipinos can adapt to match their ambitions, in order to rekindle every Pinoy’s business spirit.

Stand out by offering the best products

Customers nowadays are more discerning. They want to get the best product for the best price. There is a wide-range of products you can offer—both for food and non-food. Mekeni’s rule of thumb on this aspect is to commit to offering the best quality products at reasonable prices. Remember that your skill at choosing the best product is crucial to your success.

Have a trusted business partner

Selling is the easy part of owning a business, but sustaining its growth is a whole new level. Find a reliable partner to help you grow your venture. For Mekeni, having a good relationship with its distributors, retail partners, and customers has helped them weather storms and challenges. It is also important that your values and objectives are aligned to ensure that you are headed towards the same direction.

Know your customers

As a micropreneur, knowing your customer base is the first step to being on top of the game. Mekeni puts emphasis on the importance of doing market research for a micropreneur to know more about the customers and their competitions.

Find out what matters to your customers. Does premium products matter to them most? Or do they put more importance on price point? How do they consume information—through digital or traditional media?

Knowing your competitors will also help you determine how to position your products and what niche you want to conquer.

With information such as these, you get to know what kinds of offers, products, and services would be appealing to your prospective target market.

Maximize your social media use

Almost everyone these days is online. Step up your marketing by putting an effort to tell your customers who you are, what you sell, and why they should buy from you. You do not need to be everywhere, but you need to be where your customers are and be consistent.

“It has always been our mission to uplift the lives of our communities and beyond—whether by offering quality products or forging partnerships. Knowing your stakeholders and valuing what is important to them is one of the keys to become a successful entrepreneur,” said Mekeni President Prudencio Garcia. “More importantly, setting a clear goal is an important ingredient to success.”

There is no one-size-fits-all recipe for achieving company success. However, Mekeni believes that incorporating these core concepts into your operations might help your company reach new heights. Visit Mekeni’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mekeniph to learn more about the company, its products, and business prospects.

Mekeni’s leaders and employees began a promising year

Mekeni President Prudencio S. Garcia talks before Mekeni employees during the company’s kickoff event held at Marriott Clark

Mekeni Food Corporation, one of Luzon’s biggest food manufacturers, begins a new fiscal year in April. The organization gathered its leaders and department heads in a simple gathering held recently in Marriott Clark to discuss their path forward to commemorate this new beginning.

“For two years, we threaded thru the competition through virtual meetings and coordination. It was especially hard for us because before COVID, we experienced one of the greatest threats in our business,” said Prudencio S. Garcia, president of Mekeni. “We looked at 2020 as our renewal year, and although it did not go as planned, the last two years gave us valuable lessons for us to further realize our mission.”

Not new to challenges, the company is bullish about its operations this 2022.

Despite the threats and challenges brought by COVID-19, African Swine Fever, supply chain issues, and global conflicts, Mekeni managed to improve its revenue, launch a new product line for entrepreneurs; grow its business in Visayas and Mindanao; maintain presence in export markets such as in Dubai, Australia Brunei, Bahrain, and just recently, its marine products are exported to the US.

Earlier this year, Mekeni unveiled the new look of its family specialties.

Last February, it also launched its new campaignTimplang Atin, Timplang Mekeni—and the new look of its flagship store and products, which signaled a new chapter for the brand.

In the event, Garcia thanked its employees for their role in the success of Mekeni.

Photo shows Mekeni’s flagship store – Mekeni Marketplace – which is nestled in the same location where founders Felix and Meding Garcia started the Pampanga-based food manufacturing company.

“Our people are instrumental on why and how we survived the difficult times; and this event is a celebration of all our achievements especially the past two years. Moreover, we are here to remind each other of our bigger purpose—to raise others,” he said.

Despite the uncertainty brought on by the COVID outbreak, Mekeni stayed committed to its objective of serving the community through social responsibility programs like Galing ng Batang Mekeni, community pantry donations, disaster response activities, and annual gift giving to select organizations.

Mekeni is committed to expanding its business both domestically and internationally, as well as continuing to assist its community. “You can expect a better Mekeni in the future months and years now that the company’s priorities have been set—end consumers, business partners, and staff,” Garcia said.

Young farmers receive scholarships from the Jollibee Group Foundation

Sean Kelly Dagusen is one of the 50 agro-entrepreneurship scholars of the Jollibee Group Foundation for 2022. As part of its commitment to promote agriculture to the youth, the JGF has already provided agriculture technical-vocational skills training scholarships to 380 underprivileged youth since 2020.

The Philippines’ farming population is aging, prompting questions about who will be responsible for this vital role in the coming years. The average age of a Filipino farmer is 53 years old, according to the country’s Department of Agriculture, putting the country’s agriculture sector at jeopardy.

The Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) gives scholarships to agro-enterprise courses for young farmers in order to continue promoting youngsters to be active and employed in the agriculture sector. These scholarships will benefit JGF’s Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (FEP), which teaches smallholder farmer groups about agro-entrepreneurship, business, and leadership in order to help them develop the skills they need to supply vegetables that meet the standards and requirements of corporate buyers while still making a profit.

“I want to be a farmer because I want to help my father, who is a farmer. Thanks to the scholarship, I have learned how to improve our farm and turn it into a sustainable business that provides more income to our family,” said Sean Kelly T. Dagusen, Youth Farmer and Agro-entrepreneurship Scholar.

“Since its launch in 2008, we continue to expand the Farmer Entrepreneurship Program’s reach to more farmers, partners, and the youth to help steer the agriculture sector toward sustainability. We want to show the youth that there are fulfilling opportunities in the farming sector, especially as agro-entrepreneurs,” said JGF Executive Director Gisela Tiongson.

The Foundation has provided some 380 youth with agriculture technical-vocational skills training scholarships. In 2021, JGF beefed up this initiative by launching one of the country’s first Agro-enterprise National Certificate II Technical-Vocational Course. This was co-developed with Don Bosco and accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Fifty underprivileged youth were provided with scholarships to participate in the said course, 25 of whom were trained by Don Bosco Training Center in Mati City, the other half is provided through the Sacred Heart Savings Cooperative community-based training center in Galimuyod, Ilocos Sur.

“While we address the problems caused by the pandemic, it is imperative for us in the development sector to continue our efforts in equipping our farmers with new concepts of agriculture and business. Through this, we can maximize our production and access to the value chain despite the looming threat on the shortage of farmers,” Sacred Heart Savings Cooperative Chief Executive Officer Jaime D. Galanta said.

This year, JGF will expand the coverage of scholarships through other centers, including community centers and other technical-vocational schools.

“We want to help farmers earn more by engaging them not only in production, but also in collective marketing. Farmers, especially the young ones, need partners who can journey with them in envisioning and building their agro-enterprises,” Tiongson added.

To date, FEP farmers have delivered close to 9 million kilos of vegetables to the Jollibee Group, equivalent to more than USD7 million worth of sales. As of 2021, nearly 20% of the close to 600 FEP farmers from 17 farmer groups directly supplying vegetables to the Jollibee Group belong to the youth sector.

The Jollibee Group Foundation’s agro-enterprise scholarships help young farmers sharpen their technical skills and business acumen so that they can become agro-entrepreneurs capable of supplying institutional buyers such as the Jollibee Group.

Jollibee Group has developed brands that provide customers with pleasant dining experiences all around the world, extending the joy of eating to all. Visit www.jollibeegroup.com to discover more about Jollibee Group.
