How to Stay Hydrated During the Ber Months in a Smart and Effective Way

We are once again in the ber months. The months of November and December herald the beginning of the Christmas season and all the enthusiasm that goes along with it, but they are also a time of irregular and severe weather, with powerful typhoons and heavy rains hitting nearly the whole country. One’s daily routine might be completely upset by these weather fluctuations, which can also lead to health problems including dry skin, diarrhea, the flu, and infections brought on by contaminated water.

Given the weather changes, the virus that is still present, and even the stress associated with the holiday season, staying well is essential to avoiding diseases throughout these wet winter months. Keeping hydrated is beneficial for maintaining good health.

It may seem a simple and easy thing to accomplish, but you’d be surprised how many of us find it hard to stay hydrated during the day. Here are several ways to make hydrating a habit.

Start your day with water

Hours of sleep deprive our body of water, and so drinking first thing in the morning starts the rehydration process right away. Drinking water in the morning also helps in cleansing the stomach and jumpstarting one’s metabolism.

Some prefer to take warm water upon waking up. Whatever your preference will do. What’s important is to start the day with water, hot, warm or cold.

Monitor your water intake
On a daily basis, women should aim to consume 2.7 liters of fluids while men should go for 3.7 liters, according to the Institute of Medicine.

Dehydration can slow down a person’s physical and mental performance. It can eventually lead to chronic dehydration, which raises the risks of developing kidney stones, urinary tract infection, hypertension or a stroke.

As dehydration can happen whether outside or at home, one surefire way to get you to drink water more often is to always have a bottle of water next to you. If you’re heading out, carry a water tumbler with you wherever you go.

Make it a habit to track your water intake for the day. Some use large bottles that indicate volume content to measure how much they drink. The more tech-savvy ones turn to applications dedicated to tracking one’s water intake. Many of these are free online and will send you notifications throughout the day to remind you to drink.

Tracking your water intake will help you see what times of the day you are prone to drinking less and what causes this. More importantly, it helps you form the habit of drinking often, and once you’ve gotten more consistent on drinking the appropriate amount of water in a day, it will be easier to keep the habit going.

Hydrate with vegetables and fruits
Fruits and vegetables are great sources of water as well as vitamins and minerals. Adding water-rich foods to your daily meals will not only help keep you hydrated but also rid the body of toxins and make it stronger and healthier.

Some examples of water-rich fruits are watermelons, which contain 92 percent of water and is a great source of antioxidants; and cucumbers, which hold more than 90 percent of water and is rich in fiber, vitamin K and vitamin A. Oranges have 88 percent water content as well as vitamin C and potassium while apples are made up 86 percent water and are also a source of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber.

As for water-rich vegetables, lettuce, celery and cabbage are good for healthy hydration. Raw lettuce is made up mostly of water and strengthens bones, sharpens vision and helps you get better sleep. Celery, also made up mostly of water, can be beneficial when aiming for weight loss. Finally, cabbage has a water content of 92 percent and contains antioxidants that can help protect the body against certain types of cancer.

Minimize dehydration

When it’s too hot, try to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid getting dehydrated. Keep the fan or air condition on if necessary. If you have to go out, plan your activities with the weather in mind, and bring a bottle of water with you.

On this World Lymphoma Awareness Day, let’s remember the soldiers

If the pandemic has taught the world anything, it is how important it is to value the gift of good health and live a free life. The fear of getting sick is now even more understandable because it has put everything into perspective. The world was indeed scared by the truth of COVID-19, but cancer fighters and survivors have actually experienced this reality for a much longer period of time.

On this year’s World Lymphoma Awareness Day, the neighborhood joins together to celebrate cancer survivors, fighters, and their families while also raising awareness of the disease. I’m so grateful to be invited and I have acquired so much knowledge about this disease, its symptoms and how it greatly affects the people that have this disease. I also admire our very dear warriors for overcoming this situation and their triumph in fighting Lymphoma.

Infection-fighting lymphocytes of the immune system are where lymphoma, a type of cancer, first appears. These cells are found in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body. Lymphoma causes lymphocytes to alter and multiply uncontrollably. Common symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, chills, weight loss, and weariness. Since these symptoms are more likely to be brought on by other conditions, such as an infection, a doctor’s examination is crucial for a correct diagnosis.

It is one of the top 15 cancers in the Philippines, affecting around 11,000 Filipinos every year. Yet with lack of awareness, authorities estimate a larger number of patients that are left undiagnosed.

“Lymphoma exists”, Jeanne, a Lymphoma cancer survivor, stresses, “For someone who was diagnosed with Lymphoma and know nothing about the disease…if people knew more about this cancer that can actually affect even the younger ones, maybe we could have been more aware of our health (and) the symptoms that Lymphoma can do to our body.”

Such is the mission of Lymphoma Philippines, a non-profit organization for Lymphoma patients, survivors, and caregivers aiming to spread awareness on medically-approved Lymphoma-related campaigns in the country. The lack of information is what inspired cancer survivor Jheric Delos Angeles and his wife Anna Tapel-Delos Angeles to create a community of Filipino patients and their family members in order to educate more people and provide much needed support to those in need, including fighting for better healthcare.

Rhiz, a Lymphoma cancer patient, shares her experience living with the disease amidst the pandemic, “It’s very hard. The agony is double. During the pandemic, going to the hospital was difficult and scary for cancer patients like me. As it is, we cannot afford to get COVID.”

Christine, a Lymphoma patient caregiver, echoes Rhiz’s sentiments regarding hospital visits. On top of that, their income was cut off for a time during the lockdown and they had to rely on their savings to continue medication.

While Lymphoma is considered to be a curable cancer if diagnosed early, access to treatment is a challenge as costs related to the disease can range from one million pesos to three and a half million pesos depending on the hospital and treatment protocol.

Recognizing these challenges, Lymphoma Philippines hopes to continue spreading information and possibly save lives. As part of its efforts, the organization along with The Carewell Community Foundation, EPCALM, KAYA, and The Philippine Cancer Society, also in partnership with Takeda Healthcare Philippines, held a public online event to mark the World Lymphoma Awareness Day, and shared practical information beneficial to Filipino Lymphoma patients and their families. This includes:

  • Mental wellness advice for patients and their loved ones
  • A private Facebook group for patients and their loved ones where they can get information and support from each other
  • Patient navigation that helps patients in their journey from diagnosis to post-treatment and connects them with the right agencies and groups
  • Emotional support groups in partnership with Kanser sa Adolescents and Young Adults (KAYA) and The Carewell Community Foundation
  • Social work services that can assist patients in their journey

“It is an unimaginably difficult journey for patients and their loved ones living with cancer. Having gone through it myself, a strong support system is crucial in the journey and we at Lymphoma Philippines are committed to lending help however possible,” says Lymphoma Philippines co-founder Jheric Delos Angeles.

ISO certification and a gala are part of Capitol Medical Center’s 52nd anniversary celebrations

A gala celebration was recently held at Capitol Medical Center (CMC), a prestigious medical facility with headquarters in Quezon City, to recognize hospital service awardees from the medical staff and staff. The occasion was made even more special by CMC receiving its ISO Certificate from Certification International Philippines for compliance with ISO:9001-standards 2015’s for the quality management system.

On June 17, 2022, 27 doctors were honored for their service spanning 35 to 45 years at the Matrix Creation Events Venue. However, 68 employees received recognition for their dedication and commitment to the company. Employees who have been with CMC for five to 35 years were honored.

Another significant highlight of the anniversary celebration was the handover of the ISO certificate by Renato Navarette, President of Certification International Philippines, to the CMC management represented by Rhais M. Gamboa, CMC Chairman of the Executive Committee; Victoria Tan, CMC President; Dr. Ma. Mystica Flodalyn Bautista, Quality Management Representative; Gil Faustino; Finance Director and Norielee Magsingit, Nursing Service Director. Also, on hand to witness the activity were Drs. Maria Realiza Henson, Corazon Logarta, Members of the Board, and other officers of the Medical Staff.

Last March 23 to 25, 2022, CMC underwent a comprehensive online audit of its processes and procedures to establish its conformity with the Quality Management System requirements of ISO:9001-2015 and the Department of Health for healthcare facilities.

“Make it a habit to go around your home at a certain time every day to make sure that there is no stagnant water and that your household garbage is disposed of properly,” he added.
