Caritas Manila uses technology to create good platforms. Mayani and GrabPay are partnering to promote online giving for underserved youth

Digital platforms have being reconfigured to use their accessibility and expandable capacities to ease the impact of the economic slump on the poor and vulnerable in the backdrop of the continuing pandemic that has pushed more families deeper into poverty.

Caritas Manila, the Catholic Church’s lead social service ministry in the Philippines, is co-launching the Tuloy Aral Project to facilitate the food demand of over 5,000 youngsters scholars from the country’s poorest areas while also assisting the livelihood of rural small – scale farmers through technological advances.

Also spearheading the project is GrabPay, the leading e-wallet of super-app Grab, and Mayani, an impact-driven ag-ecommerce platform with over 28,000 smallholder farmers, including the Pililia farmers of the Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc (PSFI).

“For the past 60 years, Caritas Manila has been actively shaping total human development and assisting the needs of the unfortunate members of our society through mission-driven partnerships,” says Fr. Anton Pascual, Executive Director of Caritas Manila. “This project firmly complements our Youth Servant Leadership & Education Program (YSLEP), while concurrently extending our alleviation outcomes to our local farmers by sourcing the donated food packs from them.”

YSLEP, which covers the children of the displaced workers due to the pandemic, aims to put them through college and technical vocation education, while giving them necessary means and basic support like food as they complete their schooling.

“While technology is the core enabling engine for mobilizing broad online support for Tuloy Aral, its impact components are very social and two-fold: helping farmers at the grassroots and supporting the basic nourishment needs of the youth scholars. We are glad to play a fundamental role in making this happen, especially now when it matters the most,” remarked JT Solis and Atty. Ron Dime, the Co-Founders of Mayani, whose farm-to-table play has been revolutionizing the agricultural supply in the country.

Mayani, who now powers the fresh produce value chain of the likes of Shell, Robinsons, and Waltermart, among others, is a long-standing partner of GrabPay with the latter serving as it’s e-wallet of choice in the Mayani ag-ecommerce site. Their existing collaborations include the ongoing Online National Food Fair for Cordillera farmers with the backing of the Department of Trade and Industry.

Starting in August, Grab will use its mobile app to increase Tuloy Aral’s signal, going to the Mayani ag-ecommerce site, which will have a variety of handpicked vegetable, fruit, and rice boxes for the marketplace to choose from and give. Mayani will bolster the project’s online reach by utilizing all of its digital platforms, as well as important billboard sites across Metro Manila, in collaboration with HDI Adventures, its ad-tech lead partner.

Farmers in Pililia, Rizal will collect the fresh vegetables in each box as part of PSFI’s Integrated Farming Bio-Systems initiative, which will then be processed by Mayani and shipped to Caritas Manila for dispersal.

Infrastructural Challenges in PH Can Be Addressed With ABB Technology

ABB Philippines

ABB, a global technology leader, has the infrastructure in place to assist the Philippines in meeting its goal of having electronic vehicles (EVs) account for 10% of all road transport vehicles by 2040.

Support infrastructure, according to Department of Energy (DOE) Director for Energy Utilization and Management Bureau Patrick Aquino, is one of the hurdles they must overcome to achieve this aim.

“Under the 2018-2040 Philippine Energy Plan, EVs are expected to account for 10 percent of road transport vehicles by 2040 in the clean energy scenario,” he said during the forum, “The Future of E-mobility Is Now”, which was held on the second day of the ABB Digital Summit.

Aquino was one of the resource speakers during the forum, along with Electronic Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) president Edmund Araga and ABB Product Marketing Specialist Engr. Ace Bisnar. ABB Asia Pacific Manager for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Kumail Rashid also joined the event during its question and answer segment.

ABB EV Charger

ABB has been leading the way to a zero-emission mobility future. It has developed electrification solutions from EV chargers for the home to fast-charging roadside stations.

The company also offers electrical distribution solutions and battery energy storage systems — infrastructure that are essential to enabling an e-mobility future.

Bisnar added that ABB can provide remote support to monitor EV chargers in different areas.

“It’s not just putting the EV charger on the area, but also making sure that it is working 100 percent,” he said.

ABB E-mobility

The latest available data shows that the transition to EVs from conventional vehicles has been slow so far. Aquino shared that from 2010 to 2019, only 11,950 EVs were registered, accounting for a mere 0.09 percent of registered vehicles.

This is why organizations such as the EVAP are closely working with the government and other sectors to further e-mobility in the country.

“We never stop promoting, and continue sustaining its ground” Araga said during the Summit.

ABB Philippines is hosting the ABB Digital Summit for the first time, a four-day online event featuring worldwide ABB speakers as well as invited resource persons from other organizations and associations. ABB, in collaboration with the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (ECCP), the Energy Managers Professionals Association in the Philippines (EMPAP), the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE), the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2), and the Philippine Green Building Council, is hosting the event from July 26 to 29. (PGBC).

The Herbalife Nutrition Leverages Digital Technology to Attain to be Fit and Healthy during this New Normal

The premiere global nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition takes place in digital technology to bring fitness to the people. As they go through different platforms through videos, virtual events and other interactive activities as their approach to this new normal. These different health protocols forbid the people to go outside and stay at their houses, but this doesn’t stop Herbalife Nutrition from giving their best to serve the people. I also witnessed their fitness platforms as I joined in their exercise through their fitness portal. It features workout videos that caters the beginner routines to the advanced workouts making fitness a reachable goal for everyone. It’s also great as all of their videos can be accessed for free.

Samantha Clayton, Vice President, Worldwide Sports Performance and Fitness, and Chairwoman of the Fitness Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition stated, “Three years ago, we started on our digital platform for fitness. It’s a free resource that’s for everybody.”

Ms. Clayton spoke in the media and the blogging community during the virtual Wellness Tour of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. The conference was done in accordance with Herbalife Nutritious Get Moving with Good Nutrition, this campaign aims to stop this health sedentary lifestyle and encourage the people to take action and support one another on living a healthy lifestyle. It was introduced as part of Herbalife Nutrition’s 40th Anniversary Celebration.

According to Samantha Clayton, “Digital has been driving fitness for a long time. It really amplified the average everyday fitness professional’s voice. If you see a lot of the content that’s on YouTube, Twitter, or Instagram, the content that gets the most likes tend to be fitness-based content, so the digital transformation of the fit-ness world has been happening for a long time. It has always been supported hand in hand with going to a location to exercise, but as this year has gone on, the physical getting together piece has gone down a little, which has made the digital transformation of fitness move at a more rapid pace.”

She also said that people will still choose to do their home workout even if the gym starts to open and people can go out as they realized the convenience of doing their routine in the comfort of their own home.

Those companies that tend to create content, the challenging part is making it fascinating for the people and customers.

When the Olympic sports stopped this year, we really had a challenge in engaging in communicating to other communities and meeting with our distributor.

Clayton and her team addressed the challenge and came up with 2020 Quarantine Sports and Fitness content, including athlete cook- off contest, social media workout videos, sports nutrition blog contest series, Facebook lives workout series and social media workout graphics.

Previous Olympic Athlete; Clayton also stated that the audience for Fitness Sport and Nutrition is getting wider until today.

Years have passed, the fitness and sports industry, in particular, was focusing on the athletes. Everything shifted the attention towards athletes, a person is doing his/her best at their specific sports, what is exciting is the audience is expanding not just for sports and fitness nutrition.” Clayton said”, people now are more interested in what nutrition has to offer.

These are the data that Herbalife Nutrition gathered between February 23- March 25, 2020. She shared that pointers of communication in sports nutrition online listening are: Nutrition 10%, Market growth (28%), Science (10%), Food (15%) and health (37%).

Based on the data these are the reasons why people are moving: running and endurance training ranked highest at 26% followed by bodybuilding and weightlifting at 23%, cycling at 13% and plyometric at 12%.

Clayton believes that it is important that people must practice a healthy lifestyle. Doing so doesn’t mean you are striving to be an athlete. It’s not about you reaching specific performance, it is about improving your daily habits.

So whether you’re eating good and nutritious food, or having an exercise in the morning, an active lifestyle is sustainable healthy habits that last a lifetime. Your body is like a vehicle, the lifespan and how it operates relies on you.

A mother of four children, including a set of triplets Clayton has finished Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Major in Nutrition and Wellness. A personal trainer and competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, is an athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)- certified trainer, specialize group exercise and International Sports Science Association (ISSA)- certified trainer, group exercise specialist, and youth fitness specialist.

Decode 2020: Trend Micro PH Aims to Elevate Cyberdefenders’ Skills amid a Transforming World

The need for any business to transform has become urgently necessary, more especially with the abrupt and unexpected emergence of the ‘new normal.’ As numerous businesses are forced to streamline or even halt their operations, it is not surprising that cybercriminals continuously thrive, even more creatively and strategically than ever.

“The pandemic did not just change the way businesses—and subsequently, their employees—operate; the nature of certain criminal activities have also changed in this time of isolation,” said cybersecurity experts in the Trend Micro 2020 Mid-Year Security Report.

“Trend Micro’s mission is to make the internet a safer place, and we will continue to proactively disrupt cybercriminal activities. We’ve never felt more motivated to work toward this mission as people need protection during such times as these. Mutual help and support are extremely important for our goal to succeed.”

Elevate beyond the ordinary

As new threats arise, all organizations must accept the need for transformation. Logically, this is the time when information technology (IT) professionals should be armed not only with the right tools but also with the right knowledge and skills. As cyber-defenders, they must elevate to facilitate

their businesses’ transformation in the most rapid, seamless, and secure way possible.

This timely concern and more come into focus in the fourth edition of Decode PH. With the theme ‘Elevate: Transform Rapidly, Seamlessly, Securely,’ the annual conference itself is transforming as it goes fully virtual. From being a one-day event, it will also expand into a 3-day summit from November 10 to 12, 2020.

Decode 2020 is aiming to gather over 3,000 Filipino IT experts from various organizations across the country, and even abroad. The 3-day conference will discuss up-to-date information about the threat landscape, industry trends, and new technologies for the participants’ further empowerment amid the interesting times.

Decode 2020 sessions

As the summit goes virtual, it is more than doubling the number of sessions—from 15 in the previous edition to 40 this year. Each of the 30-minute session will be streamed one by one, instead of simultaneously, which was how it was done physically in the previous three years.

Among the highlights are keynote sessions of Hathaway Global, LLC President Melissa Hathaway, who will discuss the way digital infrastructures are responding to ‘new normal’ demands; SyCip GorresVelayo& Co Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Trusted Technology Principal Philip Casanova, who will share timeless principles he learned in his over two-decade journey as a Philippine-based cybersecurity professional; and Trend Micro Director and Data Scientist for Threat Research Jon Oliver, who will share his assessment of the ongoing evolution of the malware and security landscapes.

Moreover, Decode 2020 will also feature sidetracks outside the regular sessions. As a virtual conference, it will also introduce new features like the virtual lounge where participants can do their networking via a chat box during breaks. At the same time, Decode will be emerging as a community aside from being an annual summit. Successful registrants will be able to keep their accounts for a year so they can readily playback the summit sessions anytime and possibly interact with other IT professionals in the network.
