Filipina Atomweight Denice Zamboanga Win in Bangkok and Ready for Angela Lee

Denice Zamboanga, flawless victory for 23-year-old top Filipina atomweight remains to be undefeated after she recently won her fight against “Dream Girl” of Thailand in ONE: A New Breed, last Friday, 28 August. Zamboanga, now, looks forward to her bout against reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee.

After establishing her dominance in the striking exchanges early, Zamboanga snatched a quick take down, and then secured side control. From there, she worked on cranking out an Americana, and the tap came shortly after.

Looking back on her performance, Zamboanga gave a little bit of credit to her game but over matched opponent. Ultimately, “The Menace” explained that she felt she had no choice but to win this bout, to keep her dream of facing reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee alive.

“She (Watsapinya) had good control, but I think I was just able to overpower her. Of course, I couldn’t afford to lose that fight. My goal was to get the win and nothing else,” said Zamboanga.

“I didn’t expect to submit her so easily, by Americana no less. I wanted to strike with her, that’s what I was planning to do. But the submission was there, so I took the chance and I got the win. That’s the important thing.”

Zamboanga is the number one contender for Lee’s atomweight belt. Following impressive victories over top-rated opponent Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan and former ONE World Title challenger Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, however, with increased security between national borders, it has proven difficult to put together events in Asia. Zamboanga was left with no other options but to take somewhat of a tune-up fight in preparation for Lee, which she wouldn’t mind doing again if the opportunity presents itself.

“Once the world goes back to normal, I think I’m ready to face Angela. She’s my idol. But if the situation stays like this for some time, and if ONE Championship is giving me the chance to fight again, then I’ll take another fight,” said Zamboanga.

Earlier on the card, Zamboanga’s older brother Drex made his ONE Championship debut a successful one, submitting Thailand’s Detchadin “Detchpool” Sornsirisuphathin in round two.

Denice kept a close eye on the contest throughout, watching from backstage.

“To be honest, I was more on edge watching my brother fight more than I was nervous for mine. That was his ONE Championship debut, so he really needed to win. I’m glad we were both able to win. This night was a milestone in our careers,” Zamboanga concluded.

Zamboanga currently remains in Bangkok to continue riding out Covid-19. She hopes to return home to Manila before the year ends.

Miss Me: New single of Sebastian Rhodes teams up with YsaYaneza

Another collaboration to get you in the mood for fun the Aussie indie sensation Sebastian Rhodes recruits Filipina-Singaporean artist YsaYanesa on the hyper-pop anthem“Miss Me”.  Where exploring the glitchy but shimmering surface of pop music, the eclectic duo trades verses over a slightly experimental production.

“Miss Me is a brash, unapologetic kiss-off that takes a swipe at someone’s past relationships. According to Rhodes, he wrote the PC-inspired jam for all his exes who are trying to come back into his life, now that things are looking up and exciting. “They were nowhere to be to be found during the tough times of extreme depression,” he adds.

Sebastian Rhodes

After writing the first verse, the Aussie hyper-pop act realized that he needed another voice to air out his frustrations, lyrically and musically. “I found Ysa through an online zoom show and I was so impressed with her performance that I reached out to her on Instagram,” says Rhodes. “Ysa had the exact sound I was looking for to complete this single. I sent her the track and we wrote it using voice memos. We both finally recorded our vocals and sent it off to be mixed and mastered.”

The collaboration paved way for a sleek, colorful bop that wouldn’t feel out of place on records released by Charli XCX, Hannah Diamond, and Caroline Polachek. Songwriting-wise, Sebastian Rhodes displays a no-frills, confessional approach as he name-checks some of his exes in the latest release. “Artists like Taylor Swift often write about particular relationships, but I’ve never heard a song that drops 5 exes,” the hyper-pop star shares in a statement. “That’s next level. It was incredibly therapeutic to reflect and laugh about how I’ve been treated in the past. I wish nothing but the best for every single one of them! It’s not coming from a place of hate.”

The newly released “Miss Me” is now available on Spotify and other streaming/digital platforms.

The Fights Coach Mark Sangiao Wants Next For His Team Lakay Wards

Philippine martial arts pioneer Mark Sangiao isn’t just the head coach and founder of the famed Team Lakay of Baguio City, Philippines. He’s also the team’s spiritual leader, a father-figure to many of its younger members, and a guide through the often convoluted world of mixed martial arts.

Known as one of the most prolific martial arts outfits in Asia, Team Lakay is home to many great athletes and World Champions, many of whom trust Sangiao with their lives. So it certainly comes as no surprise that Sangiao has a pretty good idea of what could be next for some of his most prized pupils.

The 41-year-old veteran recently shared his thoughts on potential matchups for his wards in ONE Championship. Here’s what he had to say.

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang

Former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang is a man on the comeback trail. After a dismal 2019, wherein he dropped two out of three, the 36-year-old veteran is on the quest for gold.

The reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion, 22-year-old Christian Lee is the most wanted man in the division. Sangiao likes the odds for Folayang against the young titleholder, should they meet in the Circle.

“The lightweight division is one of the deepest in ONE Championship. There are so many great talents, and anybody can beat anybody on any given day. But Eduard Folayang is the best of the best. He’s the former champion and he’s so hungry to get that belt back. I’ve never seen him work harder in his career than now,” said Sangiao.

“There are a lot of great matchups to be made at lightweight for Eduard, but the one man he wants most is Christian Lee. Eduard is out for redemption, and he’s training very hard to achieve his goals.”

Where Folayang is right now in the pecking order at lightweight is debatable. He currently sits outside of the top five in ONE’s official athlete rankings. Folayang may need a win over a big-name opponent to position himself for a shot at “The Warrior.”

Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon

Another world champion on the hunt for redemption is former ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin Belingon. Belingon is a ferocious beast in the Circle, favored to decimate any man unlucky enough to get stuck in there with him.

Reigning bantamweight king Bibiano Fernandes, however, remains the only man capable of taming “The Silencer.” The 40-year-old “Flash” owns two legitimate submission victories over Belingon, and one questionable disqualification. On the other hand, Belingon has one comprehensive win over the legend.

Sangiao believes that as long as the two are in the same division, the threat of Belingon to Fernandes’ title reign will always be present.

“Kevin and Bibiano have unfinished business. I just wasn’t convinced the last they fought. Knowing Kevin, he isn’t easy to submit. There were just some mistakes that we made that cost us the fight. But I know we can correct those mistakes,” said Sangiao.

“As long as Bibiano is still the champion at bantamweight, Kevin will always be a threat. He’s going to beat any man put in front of him, and he’s always going to be right there at the top as the number one contender. Kevin Belingon won’t go away, and sooner or later, Bibiano’s going to have to face him again. That’s why I believe a fifth fight could happen.”

Belingon is currently ranked #1 at bantamweight in ONE’s official rankings, so the idea of a fifth showdown between the two isn’t too far-fetched. However, Belingon may have to defeat another top contender before he earns another shot at Fernandes.

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio

Reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua Pacio knows being champion means everyone is coming for you. In one of ONE Championship’s richest weight classes in terms of talent, Pacio has established himself as a legitimate and dominant champion.

But there are two men who Sangiao believes Pacio should rematch — former strawweight titleholders Yosuke Saruta and Yoshitaka Naito.

“Like Eduard, Joshua is in one of the deepest divisions in ONE Championship. Strawweight is stacked with world-class fighters from top to bottom. The competition is very close. But Joshua is so good, that he can really hang with the best of them. He’s at the top now, and this young man is working very hard to keep his spot,” said Sangiao.

“I think he needs to complete trilogies with Yosuke Saruta and Yoshitaka Naito. A lot of people weren’t convinced with his victories over either, which is why I think rematches would work well in favor of Joshua closing the book on these adversaries. Joshua continues to get better and better by the day. I’m really amazed at his development, and he’s still so young.”

Saruta and Naito are actually scheduled to face each other this September in Tokyo’s “Road to ONE: 3rd TOKYO FIGHT NIGHT” event organized by Abema TV in partnership with ONE. Saruta has expressed his intention of facing Pacio if he can get past Naito. His opponent should be thinking the same.

Danny “The King” Kingad

When Danny Kingad lost to reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes in 2017, it set “The King” off on a path of learning. After all, he suffered the first defeat of his professional career, in his first ever title shot, and it’s an experience Kingad says will stick with him for as long as he competes.

Sangiao believes Kingad learned more in that loss than he did in any of his wins. As a result, the Filipino star is developing at an exponential rate, and Sangiao is simply amazed at what he sees.

“Whether Adriano Moraes will remain champion after his fight with Demetrious Johnson, that remains to be seen. But whether or not Moraes is champion, Danny is ready to fight him,” said Sangiao.

“Danny has improved so much in just the span of three years. He’s worked so hard in every facet of his game. There’s no stopping this young man from achieving his goals. Fans will be surprised with just how good Danny is now compared to just a few months ago. He’s used this time off wisely to refocus and rededicate himself to proving himself as one of the best in the world at his weight class.”

Moraes is expected to defend his title next against ONE Flyweight Grand Prix World Champion and 12-time former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. Sangiao is confident Kingad would destroy Moraes now, regardless of whether or not the Brazilian remains champion after the Johnson bout.

“I think Danny learned so much from the first fight with Adriano, and now he’s a completely different fighter. He has so much more experience. I know Danny will beat Adriano the next time they meet in the Circle,” Sangiao concluded.

Bangkok, Thailand: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), returned to the bustling capital of Thailand with another showcase of world-class martial arts at its finest. Taking place last Friday, 28 August, ONE: A NEW BREED, broadcast live in over 150 countries, featured some of the world’s most promising young martial arts stars, and battle-proven veterans who put together incredible performances inside the ONE Championship ring.

In the main event of the evening, ONE Super Series debutant Allycia Hellen Rodrigues of Brazil scored a shocking upset of now former world champion Stamp Fairtex of Thailand to win by a close decision. Stamp started off fast and strong, battering Rodrigues with pinpoint combinations, with the Brazilian just a touch behind on every exchange. In the second round, Stamp continued to pour on the pressure, catching Rodrigues with well-timed combinations. The momentum shifted slightly in a closely contested third round, as Rodrigues began to increase her output. In the fourth and fifth rounds, Rodrigues pulled ahead of the contest, punishing Stamp with sharp knees and elbows in the clinch. With Stamp fading late, Rodrigues took control of the matchup the rest of the way. In the end, Rodrigues came away with a majority decision to be crowned the new ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion.

In the evening’s co-main event, CH7 Muay Thai World Champion Rodlek PK.Saenchaimuaythaigym emerged the winner of the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai Tournament following a commanding performance over countryman “Left Meteorite” Kulabdam Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai. Kulabdam started the bout firing his vaunted left hand, with Rodlek opting to box and counter. In the second round, Rodlek turned up the pressure after getting cut on the forehead. An uppercut and left hook combination sent Kulabdam crashing to the canvas. “Left Meteorite” was able to beat the count but Rodlek continued to punish him with sharp strikes. In the third round, Rodlek dropped Kulabdam again, this time with a knee to the midsection. Rodlek then cruised the remainder of the bout to win by wide unanimous decision. As the winner of the tournament, he will now move on to face ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao.

Top-ranked women’s atomweight contender Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga of the Philippines authored an exquisite first round submission of Thai national judo champion Watsapinya “Dream Girl” Kaewkhong. After dominating the standup exchanges early, Zamboanga took matters to the ground with a successful takedown. From there, “The Menace” worked her way into side control, executing a textbook Americana shortly after to force the tap.

In a ONE Super Series women’s strawweight Muay Thai contest, 2-time Thai national Muay Thai Champion Wondergirl Fairtex scored yet another impressive victory, stopping KC “Pinay Fight” Carlos of the United States and the Philippines within two rounds. Wondergirl was relentless in her forward movement, peppering Carlos with straight punching combinations and step-through elbows. In the second round, a slicing elbow did considerable damage to the Filipino-American’s nose. Not long after, Carlos and her corner signalled to the referee that she could no longer continue.

Drex “T-Rex” Zamboanga of the Philippines made a successful ONE Championship debut, defeating Thailand’s Detchadin “Detchpool” Sornsirisuphathin by submission in the second round. Zamboanga began the bout, inching forward behind complex boxing combinations and fast hands. Detchadin stood right in front of the Filipino star, willing to trade strikes at the center of the ONE Championship ring. Zamboanga continued his striking tirade in round two, mixing in a handful of takedowns for good measure. On the mat, Zamboanga took his opponent’s back and executed a slick rear-naked choke, putting Detchadin to sleep just before the bell.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Kun Khmer World Champion Sok Thy of Cambodia inserted himself back in the winner’s column, scoring a beautiful body shot knockout of ONE Hero Series Muay Thai top prospect Huang Ding of China. Sok Thy was aggressive to start the contest, attacking with a good mix of kicks and boxing combinations. A right hook to the sternum hurt Huang, causing a delayed reaction as the Chinese athlete crumpled to the ground. Huang failed to beat the count and Sok Thy was awarded the stoppage victory.

Kicking off the action at ONE: A NEW BREED, Max Stadium Muay Thai Champion Yodkaikaew “Y2K” Fairtex put together a masterful striking performance, defeating opponent Alex Schild of the United States by technical knockout. Yodkaikaew dominated early with thunderous straights and hooks. Schild was able to take the action to the ground where he owned the grappling advantage, but “Y2K” escaped back mount and got back up to his feet. Yodkaikaew began unloading his powerful leg kicks in the second round, chopping away at Schild’s base constantly. By the third round, Schild could no longer defend himself from the onslaught of leg kicks, and the referee was forced to call a halt to the contest.

ONE Championship will return with the previously recorded event, ONE: A NEW BREED II, from Bangkok, Thailand. The show will be broadcast on Friday, 11 September. Check local listings for times. In the main event, 4-time Muay Thai World Champion Pongsiri PK.Saenchaimuaythaigym of Thailand will face WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Sean “Clubber” Clancy of Ireland.
