Successful Job Fair at SM City Dasmariñas Strengthens Momentum for Nationwide “Araw ng Kalayaan” Program

Thousands of jobseekers gather at SM City Dasmariñas during the SM Retail Job Fair, opening doors to new careers and brighter opportunities for Filipinos.

SM Supermalls, together with its valued partners, successfully held the SM Group Job Fair at SM City Dasmariñas last May 27, gathering job seekers, employers, and career opportunities in one convenient and accessible venue.

The one-day hiring event saw a strong turnout of job seekers from Cavite and nearby communities, linking applicants with employment opportunities from some of the country’s well-known retail and service companies. Among the participating employers were Ace Hardware, Watsons, SM Store, SM Supermarket, SM Appliance Center, Sports Central, Toy Kingdom, Savemore, Alfamart, Goldilocks, National University, and other SM Group affiliates.

More than 1,000 job seekers attended the event, interviewing with more than 20 companies offering opportunities across retail, operations, merchandising, customer service, finance, marketing, warehouse operations, pharmacy, and management roles. More than 140 were hired on the spot (HOTS) with several hundreds more for follow-up interviews beyond the job fair. This reflects the event’s immediate impact in helping Filipinos move closer to meaningful employment.

Successful applicants celebrate their hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) moments after securing new career opportunities at the SM Retail Job Fair.

For many attendees, the event became more than just a job fair—it became an opportunity for a fresh start and a brighter future.

One hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) applicant shared how the SM Job Fair gave them renewed hope and confidence in finding meaningful work.

“Thanks, God! Kasi natanggap din naman agad ako at hindi ako nahirapan. Anong oras palang uuwi na ako kasi tanggap na ako. And this is my first time kasi umattend ng job fair. And hindi ako na disappoint kasi napaka accommodating ng staff kamo. At saka ambabait pa,” shared Marissa Orias Urbano, hired at Toy Kingdom.

Applicants line up early at the SM Retail Job Fair in search of fresh starts, meaningful work, and future opportunities.

Some successful hires plan to use their income to fund their education. Marcelo P. Magboo III who was hired at SM Appliance Center shared that he stopped his college education for almost two years because of financial problems. He participated in the SM Job Fair, “napagisip-isip ko po ngayon na, bakit hindi po ako magtrabaho para makapag-aral ulit… Masaya po (na natanggap), tumaas po yung chance na makapag-aral ako ulit. Thank you SM for giving me a chance to get a job… magkakaroon na ako ng pambayad sa sarili kong pag-aaral.”

Government and institutional partners also emphasized the importance of bringing opportunities closer to communities through accessible employment platforms.

From resumes to real opportunities—jobseekers connect directly with leading employers during the SM Retail Job Fair at SM City Dasmariñas.

Companies also shared how SM job fairs allowed them to more easily connect with talents and fill-up their vacancies. “Sobrang nakaka-overwhelm… andaming tao. Yung mga area na meron akong vacancy dito, around Dasma, Imus, and Bacoor… super happy kasi na filled-in na. So, may mga na hired on the spot kami. Thank you so much SM Dasmariñas. Sana marami pang job fair,” shared Daniela Capistrano, Talent Acquisition Officer from Goldilocks Bakeshop Inc.

Initiatives like the SM Job Fairs help bridge jobseekers to immediate employment opportunities while making the process more accessible and community-based. Meanwhile, DICT highlighted the importance of digital readiness and future-ready learning as part of today’s evolving workforce landscape through their booths.

The initiative was made possible through strong collaboration among SM Supermalls, SM Retail, Jobstreet, PSAC Jobs, PCCI, ECOP, PHILEXPORT, PESO, LGUs, DICT, and other institutional partners committed to supporting employment generation and workforce development.

Career opportunities across retail, customer service, operations, and management were made available during the SM Retail Job Fair.

One-Stop Job Application Experience

SM Job Fairs also integrate government support services to help streamline the hiring process for applicants. Participating agencies—including the Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, and other government partners—help applicants process essential employment requirements on-site, making the experience faster, easier, and more accessible.

This collaboration between government, industry, and private sector partners reflects a shared mission of helping more Filipinos move forward through employment and lifelong learning.

The successful turnout at SM City Dasmariñas also builds momentum for the upcoming nationwide Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs this June 12 across participating SM malls nationwide.

This year’s Independence Day Job Fairs will go beyond traditional hiring by integrating digital upskilling and future-ready learning opportunities in partnership with DICT, TESDA, Jobstreet, and local government partners. Main event activities will be highlighted at SM City East Ortigas, featuring digital upskilling sessions and participation from Pasig City local government and various institutional partners.

Partnerships between government, industry, and private sector groups help create more accessible employment opportunities for Filipinos.

Solar Panel Initiative Benefits Both Customers and Communities Across the Country

SM North EDSA

In response to the ongoing energy state of emergency and increasing electricity demand during the summer season, SM Supermalls is strengthening its energy efficiency measures to ensure uninterrupted service for customers and nearby communities, while also maintaining the continuity of its operations.

The SM Group operates the largest rooftop solar panel network in the country among property developers. Its commitment to renewable energy began in 2014 with the initial installation of solar panels at SM North EDSA, well ahead of government sustainability requirements and long before the current energy challenges increased the need for alternative power sources. With more than 200,000 solar panels installed across 59 mall properties and spanning 65 hectares, this extensive system supports SM’s most visited malls through a hybrid energy approach, improving operational efficiency while promoting more sustainable operations.

Impact to Communities

Collectively, these panels generate 106 MWp of solar power, meeting over 50% of the mall operator’s electricity needs and helping ensure stable operations—from lighting to elevators. By integrating solar energy, SM reduces costs, improves efficiency, and delivers a more reliable, comfortable experience for tenants and shoppers.

This hybrid energy strategy, paired with its adjusted mall operating hours reduces SM’s reliance on the national grid, helping ease pressure on the overall energy supply and free up capacity for households, schools, hospitals, offices, and essential services, in its surrounding communities particularly during peak hours.

SM’s strengthened energy efficiency efforts amid the ongoing energy crisis reflect its continued push for transformative sustainability, delivering meaningful and tangible benefits to both customers and surrounding communities.

SM Supermalls receives international recognition with two Silver awards at the prestigious ICSC MAXI Awards

Sustainability-driven initiatives Art From All and SM Green Movement gain international recognition for community impact and innovation

SM Supermalls has once again showcased its purpose-driven initiatives on the global stage after winning two Silver Awards at the prestigious ICSC MAXI Awards, one of the most highly regarded honors for excellence in marketing and innovation within the retail and shopping center industry.

The awards recognized “Art From All: Turning Community Action into Public Art” and “The SM Green Movement: Sustaining Communities Through Responsible Design.”

SM Supermalls’ Art From All initiative was recognized for transforming sustainability into an immersive and participatory mall experience.

Launched in May 2025, the initiative invited shoppers to donate plastic waste and witness it transformed into large-scale cultural art installations inside the mall. Instead of simply raising awareness, Art From All made sustainability interactive and visible by integrating the experience directly into everyday mall foot traffic.

The initiative encouraged communities to actively engage in environmental action while showcasing how creativity and collaboration can breathe new life into discarded materials.

Meanwhile, SM Green Movement earned global recognition for its long-running sustainability framework focused on reducing the environmental impact of large-scale mall operations.

Designed to address growing pressures on water, energy, and waste systems in fast-growing urban communities, the initiative continues to scale sustainability programs across SM Supermalls properties while encouraging greater environmental awareness among the public.

Presented by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), the MAXI Awards honor exceptional campaigns and initiatives from shopping centers and retail brands around the world that deliver significant impact on communities, culture, and business.

Beyond recognizing excellence in marketing, the award highlights SM Supermalls’ ongoing dedication to enhancing everyday experiences—whether by supporting Filipino creativity, building meaningful connections, or promoting sustainable lifestyles.

SM Supermalls Strengthens Nationwide Support for Cycling with Bike-Friendly Facilities and Active Mobility Programs

In response to rising energy costs, more Filipinos have turned to alternative transportation options, with many embracing cycling for daily commutes, short trips, and recreational rides. To support this growing shift, SM is making it easier and more sustainable for cyclists to choose two wheels over four at their favorite SM Supermalls.

Built with rider convenience in mind, numerous SM malls feature bike-friendly infrastructure and amenities that encourage greener mobility. These include dedicated bike lanes, secure parking spaces, accessible entry points, and other cyclist-oriented facilities, creating a more welcoming environment for those who incorporate cycling into their daily lives.

Cyclists gather at SM City Olongapo Central as SM reinforces its commitment to making malls more welcoming and accessible to bike communities.

Cyclists arrive at SM Seaside City Cebu as SM continues to design mall spaces that support sustainable transport and active mobility.

“At SM Supermalls, cyclists can also easily stop by to park their bikes, enjoy a meal, run errands, or meet friends before heading back on the road. Whether it’s a quick stop during a weekday commute or a longer visit during a weekend ride, SM malls provide a convenient hub for riders looking to recharge and relax,” Mina Kahn, SM Division Head and Assistant Vice President for Transportation Management. “All SM malls are equipped with bike facilities both indoor and outdoor, with a total of 823 bike parking areas and over 6,400 slots. There is also a total of 92 bike repair stations available across all SM locations, in case of assistance needed.”

Empowering Biking Communities

For commuters, cycling can be both a practical and low-cost solution to navigating traffic. It promotes a healthier lifestyle while reducing carbon emissions—making it a sustainable choice for urban mobility.

That is why on top of in-mall features and facilities for cyclists, SM Supermalls also hosts biking activities that further encourage and empower cycling communities while serving as platforms for connection and engagement.

To celebrate World Bicycle Day, SM Supermalls will organize its annual Pedal Power event on June 6 across its nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls. The cycling event assembles and supports cycling communities through community bike rides and bike clinics that aim to build camaraderie and deeper appreciation for active mobility. This year, The Podium will also be hosting a special cycling learning activity through SM Cares’ Book Nook.

As part of the SM Green Movement, SM continues to promote active mobility, aligning with its wider goal of creating spaces that are accessible, sustainable, empowering, and inclusive for the communities it serves.

Through SM Pedal Power, participating malls nationwide are helping advance more sustainable and community-oriented everyday travel. These include SM City Marikina, SM City Masinag, SM City San Mateo, SM Center Antipolo Downtown, SM City San Lazaro, SM City Clark, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Rosario, SM City Lucena, SM Seaside City Cebu, and The Podium.

Charles Singson, SM Supermalls AVP for Mall Operations, Mina Kahn, SM Supermalls AVP for Transport Management)

SM Supermalls has launched the “SM Supermalls Sustainability Digest 2025: Work and Wins,” its first report highlighting how sustainability is integrated into the company’s core strategies. The publication emphasizes SM’s commitment to keeping its nationwide network of Supermalls safe, resilient, and environmentally responsible, benefiting Filipinos and the surrounding communities it serves.

The report highlights SM’s environmental initiatives anchored on its key sustainability pillars: energy, water, and waste. Through the digest, SM Supermalls reaffirms its commitment to integrating responsible environmental practices into its operations, with a focus on building more resilient communities and strengthening environmental stewardship.

“What makes the sustainability approach of SM Supermalls unique is the scale in which we are able to implement our hard work. For us sustainability is not about mere compliance. It is deeply embedded in every aspect of operations across our nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls to serve our customers and communities better,” said Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing.

SM Supermalls’ dedication to environmental responsibility dates back to the 90s, when Mr. Hans Sy, current Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, pioneered resource-saving initiatives, particularly by leading the installation of sewage treatment plants that recycle water for irrigation, sanitation, and air-conditioning.

Today, SM’s environmental efforts continue to evolve through integrated solutions in renewable energy, water stewardship, and waste management across its mall operations nationwide.

On energy efficiency, SM Supermalls Vice-President for Mall Operations Junias M. Eusebio highlighted the company’s increased reliance on renewables to support its long-term sustainability goals. “Not all solar energy can power the whole supply. But rather, it complements the energy mix of the grid plus the solar energy we generate.”

SM’s environmental programs have also expanded to involve broader customer touchpoints for deeper community engagement across the Philippines.

“Our scale gives us the unique privilege of involving our customers and communities across the country in the shared journey toward sustainability. SM not only strives to implement measures that preserve our natural resources, we also empower everyone to engage with customer touchpoints on sustainability at their most-loved SM mall,” said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

Together with government institutions, local government units, stakeholders, and volunteers, SM Supermalls has strengthened its role in working for a cleaner, greener future for all.

SM Prime’s Net Zero 2040 target also aims to transition mall operations toward renewable energy use to help lower greenhouse gas emissions. These efforts are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which promote environmental protection and climate resilience.

Eastern Communications Joins Globe and InfiniVAN in PDSCN Mangrove Tree Planting for Sustainability Efforts

Eastern Communications, together with the Philippine Domestic Submarine Cable Network (PDSCN) consortium, took part in a mangrove tree-planting activity in Purok Calubay on May 22. The initiative, carried out in line with the consortium’s post-Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) commitments, reflects its ongoing dedication to sustainable development and climate action.

Organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) in collaboration with the Bago City LGU, CENRO Bago, and other partners, the activity underscored efforts to protect coastal communities and promote environmental conservation.

The activity opened with an orientation led by Bago City Environment and Management Office (CEMO) Representative Rex Magbanua, who emphasized the critical role mangroves play in protecting coastal communities from storm surges and coastal erosion. He cited the impact of Super Typhoon Odette in 2021, which heavily affected Bacolod and the rest of Negros Occidental, as a reminder of the importance of strengthening climate resilience initiatives.

Mangrove tree planting is a community-driven initiative that helps protect coastlines, support marine biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience. Through initiatives like these, organizations contribute to environmental protection efforts while supporting vulnerable coastal communities and advancing meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.

For communities such as Purok Calubay, mangroves serve as nature-based solutions that help mitigate flooding and soil erosion while supporting local livelihoods, including fisheries and other coastal resources.

“This initiative reflects our belief that creating meaningful impact goes beyond providing reliable and responsive connectivity,” said Jed Estanislao, Chief Marketing and Experience Officer of Eastern Communications. “By supporting sustainability-driven partnerships and community-centered programs, we aim to help strengthen environmental resilience, empower local communities, and contribute to long-term sustainable development.”

Through initiatives such as the mangrove tree-planting activity, Eastern Communications continues to advance programs that generate meaningful social and environmental impact. Inside World Class — Raising the Standard for Filipino Bartending

For many Filipinos, bartending is often viewed as a profession centered on making drinks and serving guests. What many do not realize is that behind every great cocktail is a craft that demands precision, creativity, hospitality, storytelling, and years of discipline behind the bar.

For more than a decade, one global platform has helped raise the standards of the profession and develop some of the industry’s most respected talents: Diageo World Class.

Run under the Diageo Bar Academy, Diageo World Class is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious bartending competitions and education platforms in the world. The Diageo Bar Academy serves as Diageo’s global bartender education program, providing training, resources, and professional development opportunities to hospitality professionals across the globe.

Since its launch in 2009, Diageo World Class has helped develop bartenders through education, mentorship, and competition. At the center of the program is the annual World Class Bartending Competition, where national champions from more than 50 countries compete for one of the industry’s highest honors.

In the Philippines, that mission comes to life through World Class Philippines.

While World Class serves as the global platform, World Class Philippines focuses on discovering, developing, and elevating local talent. Through training opportunities, mentorship, and competition challenges, it gives Filipino bartenders access to international standards while preparing them to compete on the global stage.

Lester Ligon

For Lester Ligon, a bartender trainer and former World Class Philippines competitor who represented the country at the Diageo World Class Global Finals in Berlin in 2018, one of the program’s biggest contributions is helping Filipino bartenders develop the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.

“Bartending was never just about making great cocktails. It’s about understanding people, creating experiences, and finding ways to stay relevant in a constantly changing industry,” Ligon said. “What I appreciate most about World Class is that it pushes bartenders to look beyond recipes and techniques. It encourages creativity, storytelling, a deeper understanding of spirits and flavor, and the ability to think critically about what we do behind the bar.”

Rian Asiddao

A World Class advocate since 2015 and a former participant himself, Rian Asiddao has witnessed firsthand how the platform has helped spotlight Filipino talent, strengthen the local bartending community, and create opportunities beyond Philippine shores.

“Diageo World Class Bartender of the Year is the biggest bartending competition in the world—it’s often called the Olympics of bartending. Since the Philippines joined in 2013, World Class has helped highlight the talent, skills, hospitality, and creativity of Filipino bartenders. Beyond the competition, it has given the industry opportunities to connect, learn from one another, and build networks both locally and globally,” Asiddao said.

Beyond Mixing Drinks

Participants are evaluated not only on creativity, presentation, hospitality, spirits knowledge, and technical execution, but also on their ability to create memorable experiences and tell compelling stories through their cocktails. By drawing inspiration from Filipino culture, local ingredients, and their own personal journeys, participants are helping shape a new generation of bartenders who serve as storytellers, innovators, and ambassadors of Filipino hospitality—fueling the rise of a Philippine cocktail scene that continues to earn recognition both at home and abroad.

Creating Opportunities for Filipino Talent

One of the most significant contributions of World Class Philippines is its ability to create opportunities for Filipino bartenders to compete at the highest level.

Alyssa Lorenzo

In 2023, Alyssa Lorenzo made history as the first female World Class Philippines Bartender of the Year, marking an important milestone for an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated.

“Joining wasn’t just about winning, it was about learning,” Lorenzo said. “World Class became a platform for me to explore creativity and technique on a deeper level. Each stage of the competition challenged me to create drinks that tell a story, represent who I am, and showcase Filipino culture. Representing the Philippines on an international stage, especially in São Paulo, Brazil, was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Holding the trophy as the Tanqueray World Class Challenge winner felt surreal—it made me realize that all the hard work was worth it.”

Ralph Santos

More recently, reigning World Class Philippines Bartender of the Year Ralph Allen Santos of The Spirits Library captured the national title with ‘Kapwa’, a cocktail inspired by Filipino community values and the spirit of bayanihan. First inspired by the competition in 2016, Santos spent years honing his craft and returning to the World Class stage before finally claiming the title in 2025—a milestone that reflected years of perseverance, learning, and dedication.

“World Class has significantly influenced my growth both professionally and personally,” Santos said. “Professionally, it taught me to approach cocktail creation with more intention, focusing not only on flavor but also on storytelling, presentation, and guest experience. It challenged me to continuously improve and raise my standards.”

Winning the national title earned Santos the opportunity to represent the Philippines at the World Class global finals in Toronto, Canada, while the lessons and standards he developed through the program continue to guide him today as Bar and Restaurant Manager of MOGA in Singapore.

Stories like these show how World Class Philippines has become a pathway for bartenders to refine their craft, gain industry recognition, and showcase Filipino creativity on the global stage.

For aspiring bartenders, Santos believes the true value of World Class lies beyond the competition itself, “The real value of World Class is found in the preparation, the learning, and the growth that happens along the way,” he said. “Stay authentic. The strongest concepts are often rooted in your own story, culture, and experiences.”

The Road to the Finals

The next chapter unfolds on June 9, 2026, at Skybar in Solaire North, where the country’s top bartenders compete for the title of World Class Philippines Bartender of the Year. For the 15 finalists, the stakes extend far beyond a trophy. The winner will earn the opportunity to represent the Philippines at the World Class global finals in Scotland this September, joining national champions from more than 50 countries in one of the most prestigious bartending competitions in the world.

More than a competition, Diageo World Class has become a platform for developing talent, raising standards, and showcasing Filipino creativity on the global stage. As it continues to grow, so too does the reputation of Filipino bartenders, who are proving they can compete alongside the very best in the industry.

The initiative will benefit 200 drivers, offering fuel assistance and additional incentives aimed at helping reduce their everyday expenses. Through this program, Tangere seeks to acknowledge and celebrate the dedication of jeepney drivers who continue serving their communities despite persistent economic pressures.

Jeepney drivers continue to play a vital role in the country’s transportation network, enabling millions of Filipinos to commute and stay connected every day. Through the “Maka-Filipino” Free Gas Assistance Program, Tangere offers fuel assistance to help lessen the burden of increasing fuel prices on drivers’ daily operations and source of income.

The assistance program will be held on June 5, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Seaoil Gas Station – Anabu I-E Gen, Imus, Cavite, where beneficiaries will receive assistance on-site.

“Ang inisyatibong ito ay aming paraan ng pagbabalik sa mga taong patuloy na nagseserbisyo sa ating komunidad araw-araw,” Martin Peñaflor said. “Naniniwala kami na ang pagsuporta sa mga jeepney drivers, ay pagsuporta sa bawat pamilyang Pilipino.”

The Maka-Filipino Free Gas Assistance Program highlights Tangere’s ongoing dedication to supporting community-focused initiatives that deliver meaningful and tangible benefits to Filipinos.
