Finding the perfect career and overcoming a personal obstacle with Overdoughs

His mother contracted German measles while carrying him. Jan Aldrin L. Lontoc, 31, was born deaf as a result. Lontoc, however, refused to let his illness stand in the way of his goals in life, which included becoming the best version of himself and contributing significantly to his community. Lontoc worked as a part-time server for a catering firm after completing a two-year course in hotel and restaurant services. Additionally, he worked with Bench and Hapee Toothpaste.

“I learned about the Caravan Food Group, Inc. when I submitted my resume at the UNILAB Office. And that was the start of my working relationship with Elait in 2017,” Lontoc said.

The Caravan Food Group Inc. is the company behind Elait and Overdoughs. Elait offers ice cream where customers can witness ice cream being rolled with their favorite flavors right in front of them. Overdoughs, on the other hand, offers their very own versions of donuts or doughnuts, mouthwatering chunky cookies or Chonky Cookies, brownies or brookies, pizza and fries.

What makes these two establishments stand out is that they provide employment and opportunities for the deaf.

“When I was a teenager, I remember visiting a clothing shop. The employees at the shop were all at the cashier talking to each other. And then there was a guy who approached me but he was not talking. He was trying his best to really assist me and it was then that I noticed that there was a name tag and the word deaf was placed,’ recalled Francis Carl Reyes, CEO and Founder of Caravan Food Group Inc.

That was Reyes’ first experience with a deaf person who he felt was the “epitome of good customer service. No matter who you are, he is going to assist you. No judgement.” That experience made him decide that he would employ deaf partners for his store.

He tried out the deaf partner program initially with Elait. When he saw that it was doing well, he implemented it at Overdoughs. Initially, Reyes started with two able and two deaf partners and he would be observing how they were doing their jobs.

Before he was deployed in Elait, Lontoc underwent training and he said that it was a good experience for him.

“I learned a lot during my training with Elait. I learned how to roll the ice cream properly and serve customers. After a while, my supervisors gave me the opportunity to transfer to Overdoughs. There, I learned to prepare the doughnuts and our best-selling Chonky Cookies,” Lontoc said.

In spite of the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, Lontoc persevered and rose the ranks to become a team leader in just five years.

“As of now, I am currently in training to be an area supervisor and I am very thankful to my managers because they are very supportive,” Lontoc said.

In the upcoming months, Lontoc will undoubtedly be busy as Reyes plans to turn more of their Overdoughs locations into cafes so that guests can enjoy their other offerings, which include pizzas, fried chicken, fries, and empanadas.

At the moment, Overdoughs has one such location in Greenhills where patrons may not only enjoy wonderful food but also do good.

“I have learned to do my best, to be patient, trustworthy, dependable and reliable. I want to be a successful area supervisor, a position, I hope I can have for a lifetime. Now that I am married, I want to have a stable job for my family,” Lontoc said.

The Philippine softball team RP Blu Boys, sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier, has qualified for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Men’s Softball World Cup, which will be held from November 26 to December 4 in Auckland, New Zealand, following a series of games in the Asian Cup qualifier held in Kochi, Japan.

Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) president, RP Blu Boys’ benefactor, and Cebuana Lhuillier president and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier expressed his pride and praised the team for their phenomenal performance.

“I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to the team for earning a World Cup berth and putting us in the international scene. It’s been a tough journey for our softball players, but it is without a doubt that they have the capacity to compete with other international players and rise above the challenges. We will continue to support them especially as they prepare for the World Cup. This will be a good experience for our players as they test their mettle against world class teams.”

Apol Rosales, the Head Coach of the RP Blu Boys, believes that there is still more work to be done before the club can claim the coveted championship. “We are pleased to be traveling with the Philippines, and Mr. Jean Henri Lhuillier has always had our team’s best interests at heart. We’re determined to play with all of our might in the forthcoming games and demonstrate to the world the might of the Philippine team.”

The RP Blu Boys won against India (8-1) despite losing to Singapore (5-6) and Japan (0-7) in the Super round, advancing them to a rematch with Japan for the Asian championship.

Project Empowering through Education will be introduced in Cebu

The ideation of a creative mobile classroom project in Cebu gave the empowerment of the out-of-school kids in the Philippines a boost. The “Mobile KART Project,” put forth by SEED4COM, received more support after it was named one of the Top Three winners in the “Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring” charitable campaign, which got underway last year. If the campaign is successful, there will be a chance to build other mobile classrooms that will assist more youth who are not in school in many other parts of Cebu.

The aim was noble: to assist Cebu’s youth, particularly from poor and marginalized families, and provide them with free access to education with diverse and free-of-charge training courses that will hopefully educate them even in the midst of a debilitating pandemic.

The project will be officially inaugurated and launched on October 2022 at several locations in Cebu City such as Lapu-Lapu City, Cordoba, and Olango Island, among others. It would become doubly significant since the launch will coincide with the holding of the annual Taiwan-Philippines Joint Economic Conference.

The innovative and creative Mobile KART is not just any mobile classroom. It comes equipped with solar panels, laptops, an LED TV display, audio system and even routers for mobile internet connectivity, and all are Taiwan Excellence Award-winning products.

The Mobile KART Project offers courses such as “Transformative Educational Access for the Communities and Homes” and also “Technology Vocational Livelihood Skills Training.” These courses are meant to teach the poor youth in Cebu’s poverty-stricken areas with valuable life skills, particularly the benefits of reading. Hopefully, the skills will equip them with knowledge they can use to improve livelihood or pursue higher education when given the opportunity.

The “Mobile KART Project” is a mobile classroom that originated in Cebu and was part of several initiatives related to education by Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities or SEED4COM (https://www.seed4com.org/). The organization was established to help improve human conditions and empowering poverty-stricken areas, rural and last-mile communities in the Philippines.

Given the enormous number of entries, the “Mobile KART Project” winning at the “Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring” competition was undoubtedly a proud moment for SEED4COM as well as the entire nation, according to Dann Diez, Executive Director of SEED4COM.

The goal of “Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring,” an initiative sponsored by the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), was to improve society by giving everyone the chance to share ideas about charitable work and other altruistic endeavors connected to social development and environmental protection through the use of products.

16 Years of Volunteerism and Support for the Annual Brigada Eskwela by PHINMA

PHINMA Inc Director and Foundation President Mr. Roberto Laviña extended help and volunteered during the Brigada Eskwela activity in San Isidro National High School in Makati City.

PHINMA Corporation, a conglomerate with operations in education, building supplies, real estate development, and hospitality that is authentically Filipino, recently marked its 16th year of dedication and support to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) annual Brigada Eskwela. Before Brigada Eskwela was institutionalized in 2008, The PHINMA Group was encouraging its staff, scholars, and their families to take part in DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program. Volunteers from all around the organization’s network have participated in a variety of projects, including restoring classrooms, constructing walkways and sheds, improving gardens, and providing school supplies. In the last ten years, PHINMA has supported at least 10,907 public school pupils, 247 teachers, and planted at least 280 native trees.

Each of PHINMA’s strategic business units (SBUs) individually launched its own yearly Brigada Eskwela activities. For instance, the education division of the PHINMA Group, PHINMA Education Holdings Inc., has been organizing all of its charitable activities under its Helping Hands program, including Brigada Eskwela, tree planting, and typhoon assistance. As part of the conglomerate’s “1PHINMA” initiative, PHINMA Hero, the organization’s employee engagement program, coordinated this year’s group-wide initiatives.

Roberto M. Laviña, PHINMA Foundation’s President and Director of PHINMA Inc., credits the PHINMA employees’ strong spirit and culture of volunteerism as reason for the group’s 16-year commitment to and noteworthy achievements during the annual Brigada Eskwela. “Brigada Eskwela is a hands-on experiential event that gives everyone a chance to be part of the solution. I have joined Brigada Eskwela many times and everyone I have worked with in this volunteer activity have confirmed that they are extremely satisfied with the experience. Volunteers will certainly get their hands dirty, literally, when they join Brigada Eskwela. But that’s okay, because you know that through this activity you’re making lives better for students and their families,” added Laviña.

PHINMA’s participation in the annual Brigada Eskwela encourages employees along with their families to volunteer. PHINMA Property Holdings Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer and President bonded with his daughter Martina as they helped repaint the halls of San Isidro National High School in Makati City.

This year alone, over 800 volunteers from the PHINMA Group participated in the Brigada Eskwela. The school improvement initiative this year involves repairing and cleaning 40 public schools across the country. PHINMA also donated masks, gloves, alcohol, cleaning materials and school supplies in preparation for the resumption of face-to-face classes.

They say that it takes a village to raise a child. We are all here because we all believe that alone we can do so little, and together we can do so much. And with the theme ‘Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik-Aral,’ we are thankful that we have the PHINMA Group continuously supporting Brigada Eskwela. With our theme this year, we would like to highlight the country’s collective efforts from various partnership engagements in creating a conducive learning environment for the students, teachers, and non-teaching personnel,” said Dr. Medarlo De Leon, Principal of Dagupan City National High School, one of the Group’s Brigada Eskwela school beneficiaries this year.

PHINMA Property Holdings Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rafael Felix is joined by his daughter as they volunteer during the Brigada Eskwela activity in San Isidro National High School in Makati City.

We thank the employees, the volunteers, the scholars and their families, and the different communities who devoted their time wholeheartedly for our participation in the annual Brigada Eskwela. Peter Perfecto, PHINMA Corporation Vice President for Public Affairs and PHINMA Foundation Vice President, praised the volunteers across their different strategic business units. Their commitment to improving lives through our businesses and by collaborating with and working for the communities we serve is what drives the PHINMA family’s involvement. The same culture is what gave rise to “1PHINMA” and the generations of improvements it has brought about.

Solving family problems in the most excellent way

The Covid-19 pandemic did not spare anyone, in the Philippines or anywhere else in the world. Businesses big or small, tourist destinations, even the small sari-sari store, did not escape the wrath of the deadly virus. Moreso families like the Ekselente family.

The Ekselente family is your typical Filipino brood that struggled mightily during the pandemic. They own a resort, which is both their family home and prime source of income. Since they have no visitors because of the lockdowns and community quarantines, the family business is losing money for lack of income. Worse, the family is considering selling it to be able to survive.

Theirs was an archetypal dilemma that would test their values, and how they would be able to keep the family together in such stressful times was told through the eyes of the family’s helper or “Kasambahay,” Ofelia, who remained loyal and true to the Ekselente family. She shared in their difficulties and heartaches, and even went out of her way to help the family that had been good to her by staying with them, to help them keep themselves together as they go through life’s challenges.

Their story showcased several facets of family life: the emotional struggles of the father, the resolve of the mother whose stabilizing force is tested constantly, and the situation that their son and daughter are in as they suddenly faced an unexpected turn from the life that they were used to before the pandemic, when everything was still sweet and rosy.

The story of the Ekselente family was convincingly brought to life through a six-part series that featured real-life scenarios, coupled with pleasant and rejuvenating—sometimes heart-wrenching—music, as the family went through their daily struggles, a life suddenly turned upside down.

The father, Jojo Ekselente, is a former Overseas Filipino Worker who bought the resort to show that he is capable of giving his wife, who comes from a well-off family, and his children, whom he barely knew him since he was always overseas working, a comfortable life. He returned to the country because of the pandemic but struggled to find a decent job.

Soledad “Sol” Ekselente, the resolute rich kid, struggled in keeping the resort and her family intact, even if she has almost zero experience running a business, let alone a household because she was a unica hija. She is trying to learn to handle things, no doubt, but the hardships kept piling up, like whether to sell the resort or not, and keeping away from her snobbish mother.

David Ekselente, the “chill” guy, is the exact opposite of his sister. The family’s “gamer” seems to lack that competitive fire his sister has, and would rather settle with what he has at the moment than chase the bigger things in life and not be too preoccupied with the family’s problems since he has problems of his own.

Cheska Ekselente, the last member of the Ekselente off-springs, is very much like his father—competitive and go-getter—an ambitious Dean’s Lister in college and an aspiring social media influencer. She is driven by her desire to be fully independent and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals, yet longs for attention from her father whom she feels she doesn’t know much since he was always out of the country working, until now that he became jobless but may soon return for work and may leave again.

Finally, the matriarch, Lola Beatrice (Sol’s mother) is the picture-perfect rendition of an alta sosyedad mother– nosy, sneering, condescending—but can be deemed overprotective since Sol is an only daughter. She makes known her disdain for his son-in-law, rubbing in his incompetence by being a lola who spoils her grandchildren, always giving them what they want just to despise their father.

The six-episode Casa Ekselente story was part of an impressive digital marketing promotion initiative for 2022 presented by Taiwan Excellence, and ably utilized the power of cohesive content to broaden engagement and reach. The story of the Ekselente family is part of a strategy that used organic and creative content in order to generate organic reach and strengthen product and consumer connection for six Taiwan Excellence Award-winning brands such as Juliart, Asus, Acer and FECA during the regular scenes.

For the scenes that involved music, on the other hand, the brands that were seen were Aromase, Annie’s Way, Gigabyte, Johnson Fitness, Tatung and Transcend. And the results for Casa Ekselente were totally impressive and significant, where the six episodes garnered over 900,000 views on Facebook and Instagram. It was, indeed, a successful move by Taiwan Excellence that employed excellent strategies in order to achieve excellence and achievement in digital marketing.
