Through inclusive resilience, SM Supermalls empowers the future of MSMEs

Micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) tenants and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-supported entrepreneurs gear up for resilience through SM Supermalls’ nationwide Business Continuity Plan workshops.

SM Supermalls champions resilience as a shared responsibility, empowering communities and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) tenants nationwide.

Resilience continues to be a crucial component of SM Supermalls’ quest for sustainability. It becomes challenging to realize the goal of sustainable development in the absence of communities that are safe, secure, and prepared. For this reason, the corporation feels that fostering resilience is a duty to the enterprises and communities that make up the foundation of the economy as well as a matter of operational readiness.

Micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) are at the center of this effort. These companies are frequently the most susceptible to interruptions from both man-made and natural dangers. However, they are a vital component of the national economy, creating jobs, promoting regional trade, and maintaining livelihoods. Understanding their significance, SM Supermalls has made it a top goal to support the development of a robust MSME sector.

Across its network, close to 70 percent of SM Supermalls’ tenants are currently MSMEs. These businesses operate under unique lessee contracts that acknowledge their specific needs and challenges. To support them, SM not only provides space but also promotes an environment that values preparedness and long-term continuity.

Beyond providing retail spaces, SM Supermalls promotes micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) resilience through emergency drills and dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) initiatives.

SM Supermalls’ most notable resilience initiative for its MSME tenants is a dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) program launched in 2024. This capacity-building initiative enables businesses to develop tailored Business Continuity Plans and implement adaptive measures to reduce the impact of disruptions.

SM’s tenants are each provided with free access to 5GB of remote digital storage where they can securely store critical business documents such as their BCPs, permits, registrations, and insurance policies, among others. In the event of a disaster, access to these documents becomes seamless, allowing faster processing of insurance claims and a quicker return to operations.

To further scale its impact, SM Supermalls established a public-private partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement in 2024. Together with ARISE Philippines, a United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)-affiliated private sector alliance for disaster resilience, the partnership aims to ensure that 6,000 MSMEs have robust BCPs by the end of 2027.

Business continuity subject matter experts guide micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in crafting their own Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) for their company.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Bureau of Small Medium Enterprise Development and SM Supermalls representatives join together in disaster risk resilience awareness and business continuity for micro, small and medium enterprises.

This collaboration is led by DTI Regional Operations Group Undersecretary Blesila Lantayona and Bureau of Small Medium Enterprise Development (BSMED) Director Emma Asusano, alongside SM Supermalls’ Corporate Resilience Department. The shared goal is clear: to safeguard MSMEs nationwide through proactive preparedness.

One key feature of the initiative is the SM-DTI Calamity Recovery (CARE) Booth, activated during times of calamity. Located in malls with communities impacted by disasters, the booth serves as an accessible touchpoint for MSMEs needing post-disaster support—providing a practical and timely response mechanism that bridges the gap between public resources and private needs.

Additionally, in partnership with DTI, SM Supermalls frequently offers BCP workshops for MSMEs. Both SM tenants and DTI-assisted MSMEs are welcome to attend these sessions, which are held in centralized SM locations throughout different regions. The hazards posed by various disaster types are explained to business owners during these workshops, and they receive step-by-step guidance on creating their own business continuity plans. The sessions include the BCP testing and validation phase to guarantee practical application and efficacy, and these plans are customized to the particulars of their activities, including their location and nature.

Participants have one month to complete their BCPs, which need to be submitted to DTI after being approved by their company management. More than 1,500 MSMEs have received training since the program’s September 2024 inception, and more are planned for the upcoming months.

“Resilience is not built overnight, and requires education, commitment, and collaboration across different sectors. Knowing this, SM Supermalls continues to invest in long-term resilience not just for its business, but for the broader ecosystem of MSMEs it supports,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “In doing so, we are reinforcing the fundamental truth that sustainable progress is only possible when communities and businesses are prepared to face the challenges of tomorrow.”

Toyota Motor Philippines gives Filipinos the freedom to choose

Mobility company highlights strong lineup of products and services that suit customers’ diverse needs

With so many mobility alternatives available in the local market, Filipinos typically start by asking, “What brand is best for me?Given that numerous studies have demonstrated that Filipinos have a strong sense of brand loyalty, this is not surprising. Toyota is well aware that the more respectable and trustworthy a brand is, the stronger this loyalty will be.

Your Trusted Brand

Globally, Toyota continues to be the top-selling car brand amid a highly competitive market. With its extensive lineup of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicles, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV), the mobility company has a car for every need.

As the leading automotive brand in the Philippines, Toyota has been the trusted brand of Filipinos for their mobility needs since 1989, offering quality, durable and reliable products and services. Chances are, you’ve seen a first-generation Corolla or a Revo on the road recently—a testament to the build quality of Toyota cars.

The Toyota Hilux, which embodies quality, durability and reliability, is also renowned for its high resale value

Toyota cars also have great resale value. This is great news for customers who want to upgrade their vehicle as they move onto the next stage of their life or simply want to elevate their lifestyle.

With a Toyota in every vehicle segment, there’s a car for everyone. From sedans to SUVs to vans to sports cars—Toyota gives customers many options to choose from. The mobility company also offers the widest range of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) in the local market, with HEV variants of well-loved models such as the Camry, Corolla Altis, Corolla Cross, RAV4 and Alphard; and recent product lineup additions such as the Zenix and Yaris Cross.

Toyota offers Filipino customers competitively priced electrified options with the Yaris Cross, Corolla Altis and Corolla Cross

Since the launch of the Prius in the Philippines in 2009, Toyota has been pioneering electrification in the country by introducing HEVs, which have been proven to be an efficient mode of transportation with their ability to go further on a single tank of gas compared to conventional vehicles.

True to its Japanese roots, the Toyota Motor Philippines recognizes the importance of research and development, often doing “Goyokiki” or the practice of going and talking with customers to understand their needs. This allows it many opportunities to continuously improve its products and services so that customers receive the best experience. For its recently launched Next Generation Tamaraw, for example, company executives met with business owners to ask what they need from a workhorse vehicle.

Your One-Stop Shop

To date, Toyota Motor Philippines has a strong network of 75 dealerships and 8 service centers nationwide, and continues to expand to more locations to meet the one-stop shop needs of customers. With more dealership locations, Toyota makes its products and services more accessible.

Toyota’s newest dealership in the Philippines, Toyota Ilocos Sur, was inaugurated in April 2025

Recent studies have shown that Filipinos still prefer going to physical stores for their purchases, so Toyota places utmost importance in ensuring that its dealerships are equipped with global-standard facilities and equipment. At dealerships, customers can see and test drive for themselves the vehicle that they are interested in. While waiting for their vehicle to be released or serviced, they can even grab a cup of coffee and window shop Toyota Genuine Parts and Accessories, and Gazoo Racing merchandise.

With car parts readily available at dealerships, customers also don’t have to worry about waiting too long for their vehicle to be repaired.

Dealerships are also the best place to learn about other Toyota services. Need financing for your new vehicle? Toyota Financial Services Philippines has you covered. Can’t remember when’s your next periodic maintenance timing? You can check on the myToyota App. Looking for a secondhand vehicle? There’s T-SURE, Toyota’s quality pre-owned cars program. Want to lease a car? There’s Kinto One, Toyota’s car leasing solution.

Genuine Customer Support

Toyota’s genuine customer support doesn’t stop after the vehicle has been released. Customers can also be assured that when they purchase a Toyota vehicle, Toyota will be with them every step of the way, from when they first visit the showroom to when they upgrade to a new unit. Toyota makes it easy to get in touch with customer service through its various channels, including its customer hotline, mobile app, and social media platforms.

Customers can also go to any of Toyota Motor Philippines’ 75 dealerships and 8 service centers nationwide for their mobility needs, where Toyota experts can assist them with their inquiries and concerns.

Our Expert Innovations

The All-New Toyota Camry, the latest hybrid electric vehicle in the mobility company’s lineup

Part of Toyota’s commitment is to provide customers with products and services that are thoughtfully designed based on what they value most. As customers become more motivated to reduce their carbon footprint, for example, Toyota has been improving its vehicle lineup by introducing more electrified options. Toyota’s expert innovations keep in mind the safety of customers as well, developing vehicles equipped with safety features such as Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) and other dynamic control systems.

There are no compromises at Toyota since performance, dependability, and an exceptional ownership or user experience are what truly add value. After more than three decades of transforming Filipinos’ lives, Toyota Motor Philippines is dedicated to enhancing its mobility products even more in order to satisfy consumer demands and bring enjoyment.

In light of this, the next time someone asks you, “What brand is it?”They won’t have to worry about how long the car will survive if you advise them to pick a reputable brand. Instruct them to pick a full brand so they may concentrate on having fun on the drive. Advise them to pick a brand that will answer the phone when they call and that will look out for their best interests. Additionally, advise them to pick a reputable business that makes sustainable and safe products. Encourage them to choose wisely. Choosing a brand that meets all of the requirements is simple. It’s Toyota.

Two world leaders go rogue to save the planet in this explosive, fast-paced thriller.

Upon the launch of Air Force One, the U.S. President and the United Kingdom. The prime minister is compelled to form an improbable alliance. The only similarity between career politician Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) and former movie star turned president Will Derringer (John Cena) is that they are both being pursued by a vicious enemy and cut off from their administrations. The only person who can help them stay on the run and thwart a global plot before it’s too late is MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas). On July 2, the most recent action-comedy movie, Heads of State, will be available exclusively on Prime Video.

It keeps you on the edge of your seat while delivering the perfect blend of action and comedy. With exciting stunts, high-speed chases, and strong performances, it’s an entertaining ride for any action fan.

“The number one reason I wanted to do this film was I really like working with John Cena,” said Idris Elba. “John is a consummate professional and one of those very multitalented people who can do so many different things well. He perfectly layered that sort of fish out of water who can look quite presidential and be a bad arse at the same time.”

“I really enjoy the way Idris works,” said John Cena. “I think we have a different dynamic, but we complement each other very well. And anytime I get a chance to work with people that can make me better but are also like-minded in the sense of professionalism I’m in. He is not only a great actor, he’s also a great human being.”

From a tomato-splattered street festival in France to high-speed car chases in Italy, the film spans multiple countries, explosive action sequences, and relentless one-liners. Heads of State is an all-out spectacle grounded in the odd-couple chemistry of its two leads—who also served as executive producers alongside Marcus Viscidi, Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and director Ilya Naishuller. Peter Safran, p.g.a. and John Rickard, p.g.a. are the movie’s producers.

Together, we are building a financially literate future as Cha-Ching fully incorporates financial literacy instruction into Bicol’s DepEd curriculum and extends its reach throughout the NCR

Pru Life UK and Prudence Foundation have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting financial literacy among Filipino youth by expanding the Cha-Ching program throughout the National Capital Region (NCR) and fully integrating it into the Bicol Region (Region V) DepEd curriculum in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) and Junior Achievement (JA) Philippines.

A significant milestone in the growth of financial literacy education through Cha-Ching has been reached when the Bicol area (Region V) became the first area in the Philippines to institutionalize and completely incorporate Cha-Ching into the Department of Education’s school curriculum. Additionally, the program is still growing throughout the NCR. In the Philippines, more than 47,000 teachers have received training and retraining in Cha-Ching, and more than 1.5 million students have been taught the art to date.

Over 100 people attended an event on June 25th at the Marquis Events Place in Bonifacio Global City with the theme “Cha-Ching: Creating a Financially Literate Future Together.” The event brought together representatives from Pru Life UK, Prudence Foundation, program partners, and the Insurance Commission of the Philippines to commemorate these milestones, fortify collaborations, and highlight the program’s long-term goals.

Attending the Cha-Ching event was truly inspiring. It made me realize how important financial literacy is, especially for the younger generation. Seeing how the program has grown—especially its full integration into the Bicol Region’s curriculum—shows the impact of long-term commitment to education. I’m hopeful for a future where more Filipino youth are empowered to make smart financial decisions early in life.

Paul Mandal, Chief Legal and Sustainability Officer of Pru Life UK, highlighted the company’s strong commitment to financial education and its partnership with DepEd in driving sustainable impact and building a resilient future.

“When we teach children the value of money early on, we are empowering a generation to make smarter choices and build a financially secure future,” Mandal said.

Created by Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential plc, Pru Life UK’s parent company, Cha-Ching is an award-winning global financial literacy programme that empowers the next generation with the financial knowledge and skills to make informed decisions that build financial wellbeing and a resilient future. In collaboration with JA Asia Pacific, a school curriculum programme was developed for children aged seven to 12 to instill money smart values, knowledge, and behaviour. Over 3 million children have been taught the curriculum across 16 markets in Asia and Africa with over 87,000 teachers trained so far.

At the event, a panel discussion covering best practices in financial education was held in support of ongoing efforts in advancing financial literacy in the Philippines. The panel included Dr. Gilbert T. Sadsad, Regional Director of DepEd-Region V; Dr. Miguel Mac Aposin, Assistant Regional Director, DepEd Region VI, and Mr. Jed Velarde, President of the JA Philippines Board of Trustees.

The Prudence Foundation also gave a presentation to wrap up the evening, discussing the future of the Cha-Ching program and the value of teamwork in closing the worldwide financial literacy gap.

Through these collaborations, Cha-Ching keeps inspiring change that starts in the classroom and spreads to households and larger communities, while also empowering the next generation.

Maintain a Healthy Gut for a Healthy Body with Yakult

Yakult Plant

The relevance of wellness and health-inducing habits has grown ingrained in people’s consciousness in the modern world, when maintaining one’s health has become a key issue in most civilizations and technology has increased the pace and reach of research and information distribution. In addition to the importance of exercise and healthy eating, many individuals now support the idea of taking probiotics to improve their overall health. Information on this issue and other health-related topics has become widely popular, with gut health being one area in which Yakult has been heavily involved.

Modern research has repeatedly demonstrated the significance of maintaining gut health for overall health and wellness, even though Yakult has been recognized to improve digestive health and well-being for nearly 50 years in the Philippines and 90 years in Japan.

I’ve become more mindful of my gut health, thanks to Yakult, which has helped me understand the vital role probiotics play in maintaining overall wellness. Their consistent advocacy and reliable information made me realize that taking care of my digestive system is just as important as any other aspect of my health. Learning about the benefits of probiotics, like those found in Yakult, made me realize how small daily habits can have a big impact on my overall well-being. It’s a reminder that being informed and making mindful choices can help me stay healthy in the long run.

Dr. Shawn Manske, Assistant Director of Clinical Education at New York-based Biocidin Botanicals, published a report about a study that he conducted titled Gastrointestinal Health:     A Foundation for Whole-body Wellness. He said that recent research has illuminated the critical role that gut health plays in human physiology and disease.

Medical doctor and professor, Dr. Stephan Bischoff (2024), defines ‘gut health’ as “a term increasingly used in medical literature and by the food industry… (which) covers multiple positive aspects of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, such as the effective digestion and absorption of food, the absence of GI illness, normal and stable intestinal microbiota, effective immune status and a state of well-being.”  (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3065426/)

According to Miami USA-based spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Amy Kimberlain, “Keeping a healthy environment in your gut is critical to not only optimizing your health but also staving off chronic disease.”

The gut must then be strengthened to keep it healthy so the body stands a better chance to have a strong immune system. This is where Yakult comes in.

In the late 1920s, Dr. Minoru Shirota, upon observing the state of health of the people around him in Japan, resolved to do research that could help quell the malady around him. He worked for long hours at the Kyoto Imperial University School of Medicine (now Kyoto University) to be able to find possible ways to help improve the people’s health. He worked on strengthening and culturing lactic acid bacteria in his laboratory until finally he succeeded. He managed to develop a health-enhancing strain— Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota (LcS).  This strain later became the main ingredient of a probiotic drink that was made available in 1935 to Japanese consumers at a very affordable price. It carried the brand name Yakult and the company that manufactured and introduced it to the market was registered as Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. Yakult’s Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota (LcS) has a GRAS (Generally Recognize As Safe) Certification from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), whereas there must be a general recognition by qualified experts that it is safe when consumed in accordance with its intended use in a food or beverage.

Later established in Kyoto, Japan is this company’s state-of-the-art research and development arm which continuously updates and reinforces its R & D initiatives to guarantee the quality of the products being manufactured and to develop new products.

Yakult products are currently widely consumed in 40 countries and regions, including the Philippines. The establishment of Yakult Philippines took place in 1978. In 2025, Yakult Philippines celebrated its 47th year in the Philippines by opening its second factory, which is ideally situated in Mindanao to better meet the requirements of its devoted customers in the south and help more people. It is situated in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, and serves as a supplement to the main Yakult plant in Calamba Laguna. Early in June of this year, it was officially opened. The entire floor space of the Yakult El Salvador Manufacturing Company (YESMC) Plant is 25,583 square meters, with about 18,709 square meters dedicated to construction.

Yakult is regarded as a pioneer in the probiotic industry, offering goods that promote health. “Its efficacy is guaranteed by 8 billion live  Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota (LcS) in every bottle of Yakult drink,” says YESMC Chairman and Yakult Philippines, Inc. President, Mr. Alberto R. Dy Sun.

Vermosa Green Run 2025 highlights advancements in environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and sports

Vermosa Estates turns over free race kits to the young athletes of Takbo Kabitenyo

The 750-hectare Vermosa Estate in Imus, Cavite, will host the fourth edition of the Vermosa Green Run on Sunday, June 29. The 21K division will start the race at 4:30 a.m.

The 5K and 3K races, which begin at 5:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., respectively, are closely followed by the 10K race. and the 7 a.m. 1K Dog Run. In collaboration with Pinoy Fitness, AyalaLand Estates and Vermosa are hosting the event.

The Green Run has had an influence on the communities it advocates for four years since its first run in July 2022.

Four years since its inaugural run in July 2022, the Green Run has made its impact felt in the areas of its advocacies.

Starting off with a focused support of the environment and an advocacy for an active lifestyle in the wake of the pandemic that year, the Green Run chose the Haribon Foundation as its first beneficiary and spearheaded a high-energy return to foot races after a two-year hiatus.

Since then, the multi-level run has been staged yearly, attracting serious, leisure, aspiring and elite runners to the great outdoors of Vermosa Estate. It continues to push for an active lifestyle, the environment and sustainability, and now also champions youth sports and animal welfare. Vermosa Green Run participants have grown steadily each year, with 1,200 runners breaking out in 2022 to nearly 3000 signing up in 2025.

This year, the Green Run is inviting both runners and guests to be actively involved in sustainability by bringing their used plastics to the Run. The plastics will be recycled and converted by Ayala Land Estates, Inc. and the Makati Development Corporation (MDC) into sustainable construction materials like fillers for concrete and asphalt and other concrete aggregates that will build “green” sidewalks and fences in support of Ayala Land’s green development initiatives. Participants that donate will get a discounted rate on their Green Run registration.

The Haribon Foundation continues to be a Green Run beneficiary on its fourth year as Vermosa Estate and Ayala Land sustain the planting and adoption of seedlings and saplings that continue to grow at the Kaliwa River Forest Reserve in Barangay San Andres, Tanay Rizal.

For the third straight year, the Green Run pushes hard for the Pawssion Project, a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes stray animals. The Green Run continues to create greater awareness about animal welfare as it continues to support dogs in the organization that has to date already made over 2,000 rescues, 1,000 re-homed and provided 600 shelters for homeless dogs and cats.

Its support of young athletes from Takbo Kabitenyo, a non-profit organization for young runners from Cavite, also shows progressive results.

“Some of our young runners have consistently landed podium finishes at school-level, city, and provincial competitions. These achievements are a reflection not only of their talent but also of the discipline and dedication they’ve cultivated through training, and we thank Vermosa for allowing us to use their excellent sports facilities that provide our athletes with the competitive edge,” said Takbo Kabitenyo president Noel Diaz.

Diaz highlights the noteworthy tales of John Mark Balogo, who might earn a spot on the National Track and Field Team after finishing second in the 5000m final event during the same NCAA season, and Vince John Marzo, a college student who competed with the relay team that took home the bronze in the 4x400m event at the 2025 NCAA Season 100 Track and Field Competition

“While most of our success stories are still at the local and regional levels, we’re laying the groundwork for future participation in national and international competitions. We’re excited for what’s ahead and grateful for the opportunity to help these young talents shine on bigger stages through their training in the best possible environment,” Diaz said.
