Owners of Karinderya have a glimmer of hope thanks to Project Karinderya

Helping Address Hunger.Through Project Karinderya, civil society and private sector organizations banded together to make food immediately available to an increasing number of families who suffer hunger because of the lockdown, while helping karinderyasto survive and recover their source of income.

Agnes Gabatbat makes a living as a cook. For the past six years, she has run a karinderya in Batasan, Quezon City. Because of the pandemic, her husband lost his work, and the family of 12 had to rely on Agnes and her karinderya for their daily needs.

“’Yung mgaanak ko patuloyna nag-aaralkahit pandemic kaya patuloy din akosapaghahanap-buhay. Nagtulungan kami ng mister ko sakarinderya (Despite the pandemic, my children must finish their schooling, which is why I must continue to work. At the karinderya, my husband and I worked together),” she stated.

Many small companies, like Agnes’, were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Agnes used to make roughly Php 6,000 to 7,000 a day, but her sales were halved as a result of the pandemic’s rigorous quarantine rules and financial hardships, and she eventually lost some of her customers.

Helping Revive Livelihood. AgnesGabatbat, one of the karinderya owners that have benefitted from Project Karinderya, serves a customer in Batasan, Quezon City. Project Karinderya helps karinderya owners like Agnes to revive their small businesses after the financial challenges they suffered from COVID-19 pandemic.Project Karinderya helped revive Agnes’ livelihood. “Gumanda po ang kitadahildumami ang customers. Yung regular benta ko na Php 4,000 ngayong pandemic, nadagdagan ng isanglibo (My sales improved because the customers are increasing. There is also a thousand increase on my Php 4,000 regular sales during this pandemic),” she said.

Reviving livelihoods

To help small business owners like Agnes weather the effects of the global health crisis, Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) has partnered with Kasagana-Ka Development Center (KDCI) and KabuhayansaGanapnaKasarinlan Credit and Savings Cooperative (KCoop) to assist and re-establish the operations of karinderyas from low-income communities in NCR, Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal.Every karinderyathat is that is part of the program serves meals to 20 families in their community for a period of 30 days.

JGF, KDCI, and K-Coop are all part of the COVID-19 Civil Society Sector Organizations & Private Sector Coalition (or NGO Collab), a group of civil society and private sector organizations that have banded together to address the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on varying issues in the Philippines.

“Sinabihan po ako ng Kasagana-Ka tungkolsa Project Karinderya. Ako po ay nagpapasalamatdahilnapabilangakosaproyektongito. Hindi po biro namakasalidito kaya malakingbiyaya po itosa akin(Kasagana-Ka told me about Project Karinderya. I’m very grateful to be included in this project, and this is a huge blessing for me),” said Agnes.

Singapore-based Temasek Foundation and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the DEG (German Investment Corporation) also recognized the impact of the project and provided grants for the meal subsidy of family beneficiaries.

Helping Ensure Food Safety and Quality. To help karinderya owners recover from the effects of the pandemic, as well as keep their sustainable even after the program, the Jollibee Group Foundation provided t with trainings on food preparation, food safety, and customer service.

Food Safety Training

JGF provided karinderya owners with trainings on food preparation, food safety, and customer service.“All livelihood programs that we undertake in Jollibee Group Foundation are aimedat addressing the felt-need in communities and empoweringbeneficiaries so that they become self-sustaining. We have the same goal for Project Karinderya—we aim to helpkarinderyaowners upskill themselves and develop the right mindset of persevering amid this pandemic,” said Jollibee Group Foundation Executive Director Gisela Tiongson.

Under the program, karinderya owners and their personnel were also required to wear face masks, face shields, hairnets, and aprons for safety. Karinderyas also used plastic coverings for the dishes and posted a daily menu to help customers choose their preferred food faster and to prevent overcrowding.

To ensure that the protocols and practices shared with the karinderya owners were being practiced, Health Cadet volunteers of KDCI visited karinderyas weekly during the project’s implementation to monitor the karinderyas’ compliance to the project guidelines.

“Ngayon pa lang po akonaka-attend ng ganoongseminar. Malakingbagay po itosa akin dahilmarami po akongnatutunandito. Importante po namalinis ang mgapagkain. Kailangan din natingsumunodsamga protocol tulad ng social distancing(It was my first time attending this kind of seminar and I learned a lot from it, like the importance of food safety and following safety protocols like social distancing),” shared Agnes.

Financial help for families in need

Just like Agnes, Lilia Albario was struggling to make ends meet because her children also lost their jobs during the pandemic. She and her grandchildren are making doormats to earn. But like everyone else, the pandemic made it hard for them to sell and continue with the business. “Wala po kamingmasakyan. Naglalakad pa po kami ng malayo para makaratingsapalengke at makapagtinda(There was no available transportation. We even walk long miles so we could go the market and sell),” she shared.

Through Project Karinderya, financial subsidy in the form of vouchers were given to vulnerable families like Lilia’s.Beneficiaries were given vouchers for 30 days, which they used to claim food from the participating karinderya in their area.

KDCI, K-Coop, and JGF targeted pregnant and lactating women, families with five children under the age of 15, and families with senior people and/or impairments in order to reach the most deserving families. “We were systematic in choosing the families who would be part of the project because wanted the project to be effective in targeting those most in need of help in the communities,” said K-Coop General Manager Maria Ana de Rosas-Ignacio.

“Kaya malakingtulong po sa amin ‘yung Project Karinderyakasi ‘yungnaibibigaynilana pang-ulamnaminaraw-araw ay hindina po nanggagalingsaamingbulsa (Project Karinderya is extremely beneficial because the food we receive every day does not come from our own money),” Lilia said, the cuisine offered is nutritious, with a combination of veggies and meat.

Through 230 karinderyas across Metro Manila and nearby regions, the collaboration has provided 30-day meal subsidies in the form of meal vouchers to 4,600 families as of February 2021.  Those interested in supporting or replicating the project may contact the NGO Collab secretariat at [email protected].

To promote vaccine confidence among Filipinos McDonald’s Philippines joins “IngatAngatBakuna Lahat”

McDonald’s President and CEO Kenneth S. Yang showed support to the Task Force T3 as he shared the importance of boosting vaccine confidence among Filipinos as a way to encourage more to get vaccinated to help keep themselves and others safe.

The arrival of more doses of COVID-19 vaccine into the country and by providing more information to encourage more people getting vaccinated, McDonald’s Philippines joins different members of the private sector in a campaign to raise awareness and education among Filipinos to boost vaccine confidence.

During the press briefing of IngatAngat, a private sector-led campaign that aims to re-start the Philippine economy safely, McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO, Kenneth S. Yang expressed the company’s support in participating in the “IngatAngatBakuna Lahat” multimedia campaign which was recently launched. IngatAngat is led by Taskforce T3–a multi-sectoral public-private consortium working closely with the Department of Health (DOH), the National Task Force (NTF) against COVID-19, and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to manage the COVID-19 situation in the Philippines.

“In McDonald’s Philippines, safety is always an integral part of our operating culture and will always be. Our M Safe program is a testament to this. The health and safety of our people will always be a priority, as we are grounded on the principle that when we keep our employees safe, we keep our customers safe,” says Yang. “With the arrival of vaccines, we will double down our efforts in supporting the government’s program towards the vaccination of more Filipinos. We have started by first informing and educating our employees on the importance of vaccines, as an additional layer of protection  to keep themselves safe first so they can keep their family, co-workers and customers safe always.”

McDonald’s Philippines continues to support its employees with regular RT-PCR testing conducted to the company’s front-liners, the distribution of care kits, and strict implementation of M Safe protocols to ensure a safe working environment for the employees, and a safe McDonald’s experience for customers.

Earlier this year, McDonald’s also announced that it has purchased close to 100,000 doses of vaccine to be given to its employees for free.

“The private sector plays a very big role in supporting the government’s vaccination program. From ensuring that our own people are vaccinated, to using our voice and influence to encourage our consumers to do the same. It is only through getting more Filipinos vaccinated at the soonest time possible that our country can recover and rebuild.” Yang added

M Safe dine-in with McDonald’s

The launch of the IngatAngatBakuna Lahat vaccine confidence campaign comes after the recent announcement of the government on the new classification for the ‘NCR Plus’. Beginning May 15 until May 31, Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal will be placed under “General Community Quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions”.

With the new classification, the aforementioned cities will be able to allow restaurants to continue to accommodate outdoor dining at limited capacity, but will also be able to allow more consumers to dine-in indoors with 20% venue capacity. This will allow Filipinos to have more ways to enjoy their favorite meals from McDonald’s apart from Drive-Thru, and Take-out, on top of delivery.

During this period the most important is to ensure the health and safety of customers, so customers who would want to enjoy their favorite meals are assured a high standard of safety with stringent M Safe protocols in place.

Nerve Damage Blues by Brant Buckley

Brant Buckley found a new path in life after suffering a career-threatening injury on the tennis court: music, concentrating on his Blues. He’ll be doing a live streamed set on The Bunker on May 20th. This is a weekly live video streaming event featuring original singer-songwriters and bands from Chicago and the surrounding areas. Every Thursday at 8:30 p.m., the shows air. It’s 06:00 a.m. in the In an intimate, comfortable environment, a multicam presentation with studio quality audio is presented. The livestream can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6lrgJ0k20.

About the artist

Brant Buckley  is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors of Music in Songwriting. He was born outside of Chicago (Hinsdale) and has lived in Costa Rica but spent most of his life in Philadelphia. East coast folk music and the coffeehouse scene inspired his early sound: James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Kenn Kweder, and Nick Drake. Last 2012, Buckley independently released his first album, My Life, which was featured in The Times of India (India’s CNN). He released Chicago Summer, a 3 song E.P. His song Shine had over 55,000 YouTube plays last 2015. April 1st 2021, he released his single Don’t Shoot Your Blues Away getting radio airplay on Uncle Buc Plays The Blues Show. Recently, he released his second full length album: Times Strange.

Brant met Bluesman Jesse Graves last 2013. Graves was Philadelphia’s leading bluesman during the 1970s and played with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, Hound Dog Taylor, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, and Tom Waits. Jesse learned from Reverend Gary Davis and passed on the Blues and Native American Spirituality to Brant. In 2014, inspired by Jesse, Brant moved to Chicago to learn more about the Blues. Working as a tennis pro, Brant experienced the Blues for himself after having a career ending tennis injury. The pain taught him what Blues are all about.

Buckley’s Chicago Blues sound is haunting, melodic, and rhythmic. There are traces of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and Son House, and he draws heavily from his folk and spiritual heritage. He is a firm believer in the power of music. Brant is also a USPTA-certified tennis pro who has been practicing meditation (Kriya Yoga) and energetic healing for over ten years. Brant has written over 60 interviews and reviews for The American Blues Scene as a contributing author. To name a couple, he’s spoken with George Thorogood, Bobby Rush, John Hammond, John Primer, Dick Waterman, and Walter Trout.

About the song

As narrated by Brant, he relocated to Chicago as a USPTA certified teaching tennis professional. Tennis had been a huge part of his life since he was a kid. With his persistence, he landed a Pro position, teaching tennis, but unfortunately suffered an on the job right foot injury which abruptly ended his tennis days. Over a three-year period of pain, muscle weakness and dejection, he lost his money, job, and was forced to sell his precious car. He was miserable. From this dark time, he wrote the song, “Nerve Damage Blues.” The lyrics in the song talk about his four year battle with nerve pain, a lawsuit, and overcoming the injury. He had the Blues so bad he couldn’t even play the Blues and he didn’t want anything to do with anyone or anything. Looking back, the injury was an extreme blessing for him and it happened for a reason. Going through it taught him what the Blues are all about. He is thankful for the injury as it created his new musical sound. Real Blues are no joke and it’s like Son House said: “The Blues ain’t nothing but a low down shaking chill. If you ain’t had em I hope you never will.” To know more about Brant Buckley, make sure you follow him on his social media accounts:

The GrabBayanihan Vaccination Support Program has been launched in the Philippines

Grab Philippines announced the launch of its GrabBayanihan Vaccination Support Program, which will help Filipinos gain access to vaccines and education. A variety of steps are included in the program to enable all customers, drivers, and distribution partners to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Grab Philippines also would work very closely with national and local government units to provide accessibility, connectivity, and logistics support for their respective vaccination programs, leveraging its ground fleet network and app.

According to a recent Pulse Asia poll, 61 percent of Filipinos do not want to be inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine, even if it is available. The GrabBayanihan Vaccination Support Program focuses on increasing vaccine access and providing vaccine education. Grab is committed to promoting educated and equal access to vaccines for all Filipinos as the Philippines continues to roll out vaccinations.

Access: To support easy access to the COVID-19 vaccine and to encourage its employees, partners, and consumers to get vaccinated through the local government units, Grab Philippines is committed to:

  • Work with local and national governments to include Grab driver- and delivery-partners in the National Vaccination Program of the Philippine Government as economic frontliners.
  • Work with its partners to provide pre- and post-vaccination telemedical consultation to help identify the comorbidity status of its driver- and delivery-partners, and connect them with their local governments for inoculation.
  • Extend its Post-Vaccination Livelihood Protection insurance policy free of charge to cover the potential loss of income to driver- and delivery-partners resulting from COVID-19 vaccine side effects.
  • Create a specialized fleet of vaccinated driver-partners to provide discounted mobility solutions for senior citizens and high-risk individuals or those with comorbidities going to and from vaccination centers.
  • Subject to vaccine supply availability, Grab Philippines will subsidize the cost of COVID-19 vaccines for driver- and delivery-partners who are not covered by the national vaccination program.
  • Cover the cost of COVID-19 vaccinations for all Grab Philippines employees and their immediate family members.

Education: Grab Philippines is working closely with the Department of Health to provide up-to-date vaccination information to combat misinformation and boost public confidence in COVID-19 vaccines.

  • Together with the Department of Health, Grab Philippines will publish accurate vaccine and other public health information within dedicated high-visibility spaces in the Grab app.
  • To help governments better understand the public sentiment around vaccines, Grab Philippines will launch a “COVID-19 Snap Survey”. The survey will enable the Department of Health to conduct lightning polls to gather real-time data on vaccine sentiment. Grab hopes this will enable public health authorities to better tailor their vaccine strategy.
  • Grab Philippines will also conduct a series of workshops and town halls to educate its driver-, delivery-, and merchant-partners on the benefits of getting vaccinated.

“Many of our kababayans spent the last year making enormous sacrifices for our communities – showing the best of who we are as Filipinos. Now that we are gradually striving towards socio-economic recovery, we believe that the vaccination efforts- from both the private and public sectors- provide much-needed hope for many of our kababayans. Through Grab Philippines’ technology, platform, and partnerships, we are reinforcing our commitment to supporting livelihoods, and helping the recovery of our communities,” said by Grace Vera Cruz Grab Philippines Country Head.

‘ALPAS’ concert the virtual stage of the Iconic Filipino singer-songwriters

The virtual concert that offers an exciting music experience at the comforts of every music fan’s home are coming together with the acclaimed and award-winning solo artists EbeDancel, JohnoyDanao, Bullet Dumas, Barbie Almalbis, Aia de Leon, and Kitchie Nadal. ALPAS is a digital show produced by kumu, an online community platform for livestreamers, and GNN Entertainment, a Manila-based music events and PR agency. The event is a flagship effort between the two producers to keep the live music scene alive while public life is on lockdown.

With new security and health protocols in place, the virtual showcase will be shot in advance somewhere in a ‘familiar’ music venue that serves as second home to a lot of progressive-leaning acts and independent bands, and in Spain, where one of its artists, Kitchie Nadal is currently based. Expect the iconic singer-songwriters to perform their biggest hits and rarities in a stripped-down format, and collaborate for a special ‘medley’ number arranged by renowned musical director, Ronaldo Tomas.

“Music feels more essential than usual in the time of pandemic,” kumu Live Events Manager Lorraine Alelis shares in a statement. “It’s quite challenging to find a sustainable workaround to help artists connect with their fans and implement welcoming developments in the virtual concert space. ALPAS is our way to support the live music scene as we transition into the new normal. Thanks to GNN, we’re given an opportunity to push boundaries, build a system around it, and help more people in the concert industry who have lost jobs.”

ALPAS marks the first time that the six top-notch performers will be equally headlining a show after having performed as solo acts or part of a collective. Through the years, the singer-songwriter trio (EbeDancel, JohnoyDanao and Bullet Dumas) have staged three-peat sold-out concerts at the Music Museum (2x) and Kia Theatre (1x) in 2015, 2016 and 2018 respectively, while the queens of alternative rock (Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis and Kitchie Nadal) have performed as a group in two sold-out concerts at the Music Museum in 2016 and 2017, and a benefit virtual concert in 2020 to raise funds for the employees of indie music venues in Metro Manila. All these shows were organized and produced by GNN Entertainment.

ALPAS tickets are now available for purchase via kumu, with a price of P499 for general admission and the show is slated to premiere on June 5, 2021 from 6pm onwards. For more details on how to buy tickets, go to this site: www.kumu.live

“Magpahinga,” the latest single of Ben&Ben offer reassuring warmth on introspective

New single of Ben&Ben Magpahinga,” the nine-piece collective wrote a lovely piano ballad from the point of view of someone who is in dire need of guidance. Also offer words of genuine compassion and encouragement to every person out there who might be going through a lot in these difficult times. “Magpahinga” is out now on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music.

“It’s a song that reminds us to check up on ourselves and address our own inner struggles,” lead vocalist and guitarist Paolo Benjamin points out in a statement. “But also, it is a song that aims to accompany the listener, and remind them that in those moments of hardship, they are not alone.” Without resorting to being preachy, the band’s latest offering also reminds listeners that there’s nothing to be ashamed of in taking some time to step back from the situation and heal on your own terms.

Written by Miguel and Paolo Benjamin, and produced by JP Verona with the band, “Magpahinga” was recorded in the house where the band is currently staying. The remote place has a beautiful baby grand piano, which keyboardist Patricia Lasaten used as an instrument to complement the band’s introspective lyrics.

Percussionist Andrew de Pano takes pride in how everything came together beautifully to convey a sense of cinematic earnestness. “The piano helped give the song a nostalgic texture, magnified further by Pat’s emotional performance. The sound design elements were added in by our lead guitarist Poch, using a unique instrument called a Seaboard. These bass and pad sounds definitely helped widen the soundscape and set it apart from our past ‘stripped-down’ releases.”

Here, the quiet moments filled with lovingly sparse details, take the lead, while the instrumentation speaks volumes even when it retreats inwardly, giving off that sweater-weather vibe.

“We wanted to make sure that above all else, the message of the song stands out,” lead vocalist and guitarist Miguel Benjamin adds. “The piano, violin, and pads are all present to reinforce the melody and support the emotion that the lyrics holds. We hope that the listener feels the song as much as if it were their own experience.”
