Filipinos are now more eager to widen their knowledge on General Nutrition; as revealed by Herbalife Nutrition

Dr. Chin-Kun Wang, President, International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods

Premiere global nutrition company helped in revealing that Filipinos are now ready and much more eager to learn more about General Nutrition Knowledge. On a survey done last March 2020, to respondents from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, it has been showed how Filipinos have nutritional knowledge gap which is relatively important in determining how they value factors that greatly affects their health.

On misconceptions, majority (85%) of Filipinos believed that a person needs adequate calcium intake regardless of age to optimize peak bone mass for bone condition. On the contrary, the peak bone mass is reliant on calcium intake and reaches its peak when a person is at the age of 30. On the other hand it has been revealed that enough calcium intake in life can lessen the risk of Osteoporosis.

It is a good thing that when it comes to fats, 68% of Filipinos are right about its job in providing human body with energy, while it’s a bit sad that only 42% acknowledge the fact that fats support the body in absorbing vitamins.

Sridhar Rajagopalan, Senior Director, Sub-Region Head, and General Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines

“Exercise is the key!”, says the 80% of Filipinos who appropriately answered that exercising helps the body in rebuilding muscles and in increasing lean muscles. Sadly, 51% falsely believed that protein powder can’t be a healthy source of protein as compared to protein served by natural foods. Sridhar Rajagopalan, Senior Director, Sub-Region Head, and General Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines, shared that protein powder from high-quality sources can be as good as protein from natural foods. Likewise soy protein from soybeans, it is still a complete protein, which can provide a full range of nine essential amino acids as needed by the human body.

It is truer now as it shows that Filipinos strongly believe in the power of Vitamin C and fruits in helping the body boost immunity and resistance to different types of infections as 94% of them had correct answers of that.

Above all the information about the accuracy of their knowledge on nutrition, 47% of Filipino consumers believed in the importance of being educated with necessary nutrition knowledge and that 39% said that misleading myths and misinformation that is found online prevents them from having accurate nutrition knowledge.

The data extracted to present the results were from the Quiz taken as part of Asia Pacific Nutrition Myths Survey, Rajagopalan said that the result of the quiz and the survey show that there is a significant nutrition knowledge gap among Filipinos and that their anticipation, interest and acknowledgement on the importance of balanced nutrition gave them hope to help close the gap, at the same time empower Filipinos with nutrition knowledge they need to make better nutrition choices. He said that this was a good sign and the only next thing to do is to help them achieve that.
