Joshua Pacio Joins the Team Lakay Mountain Biking Craze

Team Lakay is hands down the most prolific martial arts team in the Philippines. With well-known and established stars such as former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang, and former ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin Belingon leading the pack, Team Lakay is the absolute elite in Asian martial arts.

But because of the effect the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the world, particularly the Philippines where movement has been greatly restricted, Team Lakay has had to resort to alternative methods of training to keep their physical fitness at the highest level.

Fortunately, the team is situated in one of the most breathtaking locales in the entire country. Baguio City is abundant with lush greenery, cool weather, and fresh mountain air.

Reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio recently took up the Team Lakay pastime of mountain biking, and now a handful of their team members regularly hit the dirt roads to experience the fun and excitement of this alternative sport.

“I took up mountain biking because I saw kuya Edward [Kelly], kuya Geje [Eustaquio], and kuya Honorio [Banario] doing it. So I tried it way back then, but it took me two years to buy my own bike. I’ve only just now made it a regular thing. Now we all go biking together, and it’s a lot of fun,” said Pacio.

“Mountain biking is a leisure activity, but it’s also good for cardio exercise.”

Pacio and the team typically integrate mountain biking into their training regimen, riding at least once a week during training camp, and two to three times a week when they don’t have upcoming bouts.

The area they usually ride in Baguio City is flush with natural beauty — hills, valleys, rivers, and flourishing wildlife.

For Pacio, it’s a chance not only to get in a great workout, but also to absorb the unique energy of mother nature.

“Me, Danny [Kingad], Jeremy [Pacatiw], Jomar [Paac], kuya Geje, Edward, and Honorio all ride a lot. It’s one of the ways we bond. We ride together and experience the outdoors. It’s reenergizing and revitalizing, great for the mind and body,” said Pacio.

“What I love most about mountain biking is that you don’t really notice how physically tiring it is because you’re having so much fun. It’s especially fun riding up mountains and roads. Baguio City has some of the best scenic locations in the Philippines. It’s so refreshing to just take in nature. We also have the best weather in the country.”

Pacio is staying ready and staying sharp. Once the situation with Covid-19 begins to improve and restrictions are relaxed, ONE Championship will look to host events in Manila once again. Pacio, who holds the ONE Strawweight World Title, knows he has to be at the top of his game constantly for when he gets the call to defend his belt.

Luckily, Pacio has mountain biking to keep him busy until he steps into the ONE Circle again. The Team Lakay group activity has produced some memorable moments for Pacio.

“One of my most memorable experiences mountain biking was when ONE Championship came to Baguio for a shoot. They wanted to capture us mountain biking, so we went to Bubok Bisal, which is an hour and a half away from here. We enjoyed it a lot,” Pacio recalled.

“There were a lot of uphill and downhill slopes. We started riding at 10 in the morning, and we finished around 4:30 in the afternoon, ending up along a river where we had a meal before we went home. It’s those moments that get etched into your memory. It was such an amazing experience.”

Tanduay Rums Bag US Ultimate Spirits Challenge Award

It’s been many years now that Tanduay has been dominating spirits competitions and awards in other countries. Recently, three of its products again gained recognition, this time from the prestigious Ultimate Spirits Challenge in the US

The Tanduay Double 16 Years Old Aged Rum was a finalist for the rum category, receiving a rating of 94 and was adjudged excellent and highly recommended. Tanduay Asian Rum Gold, meanwhile, received a 92 rating and was also adjudged excellent and highly recommended. With a rating of 88, Tanduay Silver Asian received a strong recommendation and was deemed very good.

“Tanduay has always been committed to creating the best rum possible. From the sugarcanes we use to our distillation process, we make sure that each product that comes out of our plants have gone through our stringent quality checks,” said Tanduay SVP for Sales and Marketing Paul Lim.

Tanduay starts with the quality of the sugarcane from Victorias, Negros Occidental, where planting begins just as the rainy season is about to start and harvesting done by summer of the following year.

The canes would then find their way to Tanduay’s sugar mill, where they are carefully cleaned, stripped off their leaves, cut, and refined. From these canes will come the molasses, the key ingredient to making rum.

“At Tanduay, we only use first-syrup molasses, which are extracted from the initial boil of the sugarcanes. It contains a high sugar content, and is valued for its unique taste,” Lim said.

The molasses is then fermented for 12 hours. This process turns the sugars into alcohol, creating a ferment prime for distillation.

Distilled and Blended to Perfection

Tanduay’s distillation plants are located in Negros Occidental, Misamis Oriental, and Laguna, and they keep the tradition of Tanduay’s original distillery in Manila, which has already been decommissioned.

The country’s humidity and these distilleries’ high elevation contribute to Tanduay rum’s distinct flavors and aromas. It is in these distilleries where the molasses is turned into a clear liquid—ethanol.

“Our skilled blenders would then take over. We owe much to them for creating the Tanduay flavors that the world has come to love,” Lim said.

Watch the making of Tanduay below:

The liquids are stored in Kentucky bourbon oak barrels, where they will be aged.

“Tanduay uses two aging processes. In the single-barrel method, rums mature in individual barrels for a set amount of time. The solera aging process, meanwhile, channels the rums through a series of Kentucky bourbon barrels that are never empty, which helps create and sustain the flavors contained there for generations,”  Lim said.

Tanduay’s Master Blender, who is the guardian of Tanduay’s formulas, will then check the rum for consistency and quality. Once the Master Blender gives the go signal, the rums are sent for bottling and packaging.

“Creating a Tanduay product requires hard work and dedication, so we are deeply honored every time we would receive an award. Most of all, we are thankful for the loyal patronage of Tanduay consumers who now comprise not only our fellow Filipinos but people from other countries as well,” Lim said.

In June, Tanduay was declared once again the world’s best-selling rum by Drinks International. Early this year, Tanduay won five medals from the Beverage Testing Institute. Tanduay Asian Rum Gold topped the list with a gold medal. Silver medals, meanwhile, were awarded to Tanduay Asian Rum Silver and Boracay Cappuccino Flavored Rum. Tanduay Double Rum and Boracay Coconut Flavored Rum both received bronze medals.

Return and Plans to Clear Out ONE Heavyweight Division of Amir Aliakbari

Amir Ali Akbari

Amir Ali Akbari, Iranian former gold medalist and Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, is ultra-motivated to resume his career in ONE Championship, after the 32-year-old recently signed with the Singapore-based promotion earlier this month. Ali Akbari’s move to the ONE Circle considered one of the most feared mixed martial artists in the world. Comes as ONE recently bolstered its heavyweight division with a plethora of new signings which include former UFC star Arjan Bhullar, grappling legends Tom DeBlass and Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida, among others.

Excited to wreak havoc on the ONE heavyweights, Ali Akbari revealed his thought process in his decision to join the world’s largest martial arts organization.

“I had many great offers from many promotions but ONE Championship was the only promotion that saw my vision. For ONE, it wasn’t just another contract but rather a bridge they were willing to build between me and my country and MMA. This was very important for me,” said Ali Akbari, who is proud to represent Iran on the global stage.

“ONE Championship has many great fighters and I enjoy watching their fights. No specific names come to mind but I enjoy watching all their fights as their level of competition is very high and tactical.”

Filipino-American mixed martial arts icon Brandon “The Truth” Vera is the reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion. The 42-year-old veteran has held the title since 2015, and has twice successfully defended the belt.

Entering the title picture behind his impressive 10-1 professional mixed martial arts record, which includes 7 knockouts, Aliakbari knows exactly who he wants in his first appearance in the ONE Circle. Despite many great potential matchups to be made, he wants Vera immediately and vows to end The Truth’s reign in spectacular fashion.

“I only want one fight and that’s Brandon Vera. This is the fight to make. None of these heavyweights can last in the cage or ring with me, including Brandon,” said Aliakbari, throwing a challenge out to the king of the division.

“I ask ONE to give me Brandon and I promise to smash him brutally.”

Aliakbari has grand visions of his career moving forward. After taking the ONE Heavyweight World Championship, the 32-year-old Iranian superstar plans on sweeping the division, and then calling out the rest of the heavyweights around the world.

“I envision having the belt wrapped around me and defending it for many years to come. After I take the belt, I want to defend it successfully and clear out the division,” Aliakbari concluded.

“After doing so, I want to raise the ONE championship flag high and challenge other promotions’ heavyweights to step up and see who the real baddest man on the planet is.”

Vera is currently penciled in to face Indian wrestling star Arjan Bhullar in his next defense of the ONE Heavyweight World Title, although that bout has yet to be finalized and confirmed.

Heavyweight is one of ONE Championship’s hottest divisions right now, and Vera is surrounded by legitimate threats to his throne. Without a doubt, Aliakbari is a tremendous addition to a pool of sharks ready to chomp at the bits.

Debut single of Nobody’s Home: “12:00 (Midnight)” ‘80s-inspired anthem’

Stream 12:00 (Midnight) here.

Nobody’s Home, Filipino three-piece band reinvents ‘80s nostalgia with modern synth-pop sheen on their debut single “12:00 (Midnight).  Available today on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music. “12:00 (Midnight)” is their first single as an artist and Eon stresses that the band is very excited and looking forward to working with the major record label. “We feel that at this point in our lives, we should grab every opportunity for us to showcase our talent and message through a platform everyone is familiar with.”

Plumbing greater heights with pulsating synth melodies and cinematic flourishes, the indie rock trio’s maiden song evokes the hallmarks of a generation who grew up on Back To The Future and Dungeons and Dragons, while setting its sights on darker, more subdued production.

Nobody’s Home picture

According to Eon Buendia, the song revolves “around the idea of separation and someone comparing themselves, thinking they’re nothing but a burden on their partner who seems to be of importance.”

Drummer and co-songwriter Moon Cairo Peralta also shares the reason behind their latest song: “It’s called ‘12:00 (Midnight)’ because midnight for us signifies that odd time between the day before and the next day to come. The time where everything around you seems calm which gives way to the anxiety that comes crawling in. It talks about starting may be right back where you started from or anew even if you have no idea it’s already started.”

“12:00 (Midnight)” started out as a gauzy instrumental piece produced by Moon Cairo Peralta. Cairo points out, “I was inspired by listening to a lot of the bands who used synths in the 80s. With writing Midnight in particular, I wanted to incorporate synths that’ll establish the overall mood and groove of the production.”

The young musician sent the track to Eon Buendia, who wrote the lyrics and melodies, and to Justin Punzalan, who added guitar lines that according to him, “were placed in a way that it would complement instead of overpower not just the vocals but the track itself.”

The end result mirrors the three-piece collective’s thrilling retro-futurist experimentation, while careful not to sacrifice the incredible pop sensibilities that define their signature sound.

Denice Zamboanga to Stay in Thailand, Hoping to Compete in Bangkok Soon

Number one ranked ONE Championship female atomweight Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga is keeping busy in Thailand, training and staying ready in case she gets the call to compete in an upcoming card in Bangkok.

Bouts for ONE Championship’s A NEW BREED events through August and September have yet to be announced, and Zamboanga is holding out hope that she can return to the ONE Circle sooner rather than later.

With lockdown restrictions tightening in her native Philippines due to a worsening Covid-19 situation, Zamboanga is left without much of a choice but to stay in Thailand. Accompanying her in the ‘Land of a Thousand Smiles’ is her older brother, Drex, and their friend Fritz Biagtan. Together, they are preparing Zamboanga for a potential upcoming bout.

“Right now I’m just training here in Bangkok with my brother Drex and our friend Fritz Biagtan. I’m very lucky because I can still do what I love to do,” said Zamboanga.

“I just want to stay ready, because anytime, I can get called up to compete now that ONE Championship is hosting events here in Thailand.”

ONE Championship successfully returned to its flagship event schedule with ONE: NO SURRENDER last 31 July. The promotion has NO SURRENDER II and NO SURRENDER III coming up on 14 August and 21 August respectively, as well as three more shows lined up in Bangkok on 28 August, 11 September and 18 September.

Zamboanga is hoping to appear on at least one of those cards.

“I really want to fight and compete, so I’m just waiting for that call from ONE Championship. Need to stay as sharp as possible, because the World Title shot is just around the corner,” said Zamboanga.

“Right now, I need to work on my speed. Speed is a great asset to have in the ring. Of course, I’m constantly working on my striking skills and ground game. Thankfully my brother is here to help me.”

The 23-year-old rising star also recently revealed that she had parted ways with the Fairtex team in Pattaya to pursue her own ventures.

While at Fairtex, Zamboanga had trained with athletes such as ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Stamp Fairtex, Nat “Wondergirl Fairtex” Nutchakamon, and Noelle Grandjean. But more than training partners, they had become close friends.

She stresses that there are no ill-feelings between her and Fairtex, and that she will always consider the people she made bonds with there as true allies.

“I love my friends at Fairtex. We are very close. Even though I am no longer with Fairtex, they are all still my friends. Stamp, Nat, Noelle, and all my teammates, and coach DJ. I don’t think that bond can be broken,” said Zamboanga.

Although she’s fixated on training, and possibly competing again in the very near future, Zamboanga can’t help but feel homesick and wanting to return to the Philippines to see her family and friends. But with travel restrictions abound, and varying levels of quarantine measures, it has been impossible to move around.

Still, Zamboanga is enthusiastic about being able to return to the Philippines later this year.

“Hopefully before this year ends, and Thailand opens its airports, and I can fly back, I can go home to the Philippines. Right now the situation is really complicated. I really miss home,” said Zamboanga.

“This is all just a big test, but one test that everyone can get through. I just want to say, stay strong everyone. God has a plan and we just have to have faith.”

Catch your favorite ONE Championship superstars now on Cignal TV and TV5.

Taps into nostalgic and TikTok chart-topper Sabby Sousa drops new R&B single“Emerald”

Sabby Sousa

Sabby Sousa, the Toronto-based artist takes the spotlight and exhilarating on her new single “Emerald.” She is no longer a stranger to the digital music realm. Her effervescent pop smash “Cream N’ Frosting” became a viral hit more than two million streams on all music platforms on both Spotify and iTunes Philippines and the rest of Asia. It charted inside the top 50 for weeks due to its unexpected popularity on short form video platform, TikTok.

Among the Filipino celebrities who joined the dance craze are Hello Stranger star Tony Labrusca, GMA 7 actor Miguel Tanfelix, alt-rock icon Rico Blanco, actress and social media influencer Chie Filomeno, YouTube sensation Mona Alawi, and teen star Jillian Ward.

Despite its openness to tackle a romantic relationship gone astray, the smooth R&B song inhabits an optimistic headspace that values emotional maturity over impulsive demeanor. And after a short hiatus, the hyper-pop hitmaker returns this year with a nostalgic R&B single that tackles a story of romantic relationship gone astray. Her new single “Emerald” available now on all digital platforms worldwide.

Sabby shares the inspiration behind her new track. “I had gone through a breakup and didn’t want to write anything sad or angry. I wanted to remember what it felt like in those moments and hold them close. It reminded me that not all relationships are meant to last forever. What lasts forever is the memories you make. So live life to the fullest.”

Produced by French Canadian electronic duo House of Wolf, “Emerald” inhabits an optimistic headspace that values emotional maturity over impulsive demeanor. With her syrupy vocals complementing the track’s atmospheric sonic backdrop, Sabby remembers her past relationship fondly, setting aside bitterness for a peace of mind.

This time, she mines a wistful narrative straight from a journal entry: confessional in form and function, but also hopeful in the way it was written and delivered. “There’s a lot of electric guitar and synths that make the song so dreamy,” Sabby Sousa adds. “I would definitely say, it’s a lot different to previous songs as it marks the beginning of a new sound for me.”

Recorded in August last year, the infectious jam sounds like a star turn from a young artist who is now ready to take the spotlight and make a lightning strike, one more time.
