Jay R sounds off on MRLD-OC Records controversy, calls out industry power imbalance

The Filipino R&B icon urges young artists to protect themselves – an issue mirrored in his new film, Songs For Selina

Filipino R&B king Jay R recently weighed in on the controversy surrounding the exploitative practices in the local music industry.

This comes after young singer-songwriter MRLD broke her silence about her departure from OC Records, alleging unfair compensation and limited marketing support, with claims that have sparked broader conversations online about transparency, artist rights, and the power imbalance between emerging musicians and record labels.

In a TikTok video posted over the weekend, Jay R spoke out about what he calls “uncomfortable truths,” reflecting on the dark side of the industry that has long placed new artists at a disadvantage.

“I’ve been in this industry for more than 20 years, and situations like this really do happen to artists,” Jay R said. “It has happened to me as well. When you’re starting out, you enter record deals and contracts without fully understanding what’s written in them. Sometimes, you don’t really comprehend the terms.”

He stressed the importance of legal advice and contract literacy for emerging musicians navigating the complexities of recording agreements.

“That’s why it’s important for artists to carefully read their contracts,” he added. “You should have a lawyer and review everything line by line. You need to understand exactly what you’re getting into. It’s a harsh truth about the industry, but it’s real. And honestly, I think it’s perfect timing that this issue has come to light. Artists need to be educated about what really happens behind closed doors.”

The short-form video post has garnered more than a million views on TikTok and Facebook, combined, fueling wider debate about accountability with the music business.

Jay R further expanded on the topic during the press conference for Songs For Selina, a music-themed film that he produced and stars in. While fictional in form, the project echoes the same tensions now being publicly discussed: creative ownership, exploitation, and the invisible pressures artists face behind the spotlight.

“Artists sometimes fear being marginalized or even blacklisted when they speak about the truth,” Jay R shared. “The story of Songs For Selina comes from real experiences: ours and the stories of fellow artists who have lived through these realities.”

Starring Rachel Coates and Mica Javier, Songs For Selina explores the power structures embedded in the music industry and the ethical dilemmas confronting artists as they navigate ambition, loyalty, and survival in a competitive landscape.

Whether by coincidence or design, the film’s themes now resonate with real-world conversation unfolding across the Philippine music scene—one that many believe is long overdue.

Coca-Cola Philippines’ Barangay Tapon to Ipon Initiative is won by Barangay Tejeros

Barangay Tejeros is recognized as the top-performing barangay at the Tapon to Ipon Fiesta awarding ceremony, honoring collective effort and barangay-led action toward proper waste segregation.

Makati City’s Barangay Tejeros has demonstrated how common objectives can transform routine recycling into a long-lasting community activity. barrio Tejeros, which was named the best-performing barrio in Coca-Cola Philippines’ Barangay Tapon to Ipon program, showed how cooperation enhanced waste segregation, promoted inclusive recycling, and increased community ties.

A community fiesta with sports and activities followed the awarding ceremony, which took place at the Barangay Tejeros basketball court. Barangay Tejeros, which had finished second the year before, took first place in the most recent iteration of the program, demonstrating the community’s continued involvement and dedication.

The event brings the community together through interactive games, prizes, and shared merienda, celebrating the winning barangay’s achievement while reinforcing recycling as a fun, inclusive, and owned community practice.

Recognizing grassroots recycling efforts

Barangay Tapon to Ipon is a yearly, nationwide community recycling initiative powered by Coca-Cola Philippines in partnership with barangays, local leaders, and sari-sari store owners. The program engaged barangays, residents, and sari-sari stores across Metro Manila to collect and properly segregate PET bottles. It supports barangays in implementing Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, while helping build sustainable recycling habits at the grassroots level.

This year, 20 barangays around Metro Manila joined the friendly competition, collecting PET bottles while strengthening waste segregation and recycling practices. The awarding ceremony recognized the barangay’s collective effort, highlighting the role of residents, youth volunteers, and sari-sari stores in driving impact at the local level.

Barangay Tejeros collected nearly 40,000 PET bottles, equivalent to 698 kilograms, followed by Barangay 114 in Caloocan City in second place with a collection of about 21,000 (375 KG), and Barangay Moonwalk in Parañaque City for third place with 17,000 (310 KG).

Barangay Chairman Wilfredo S. Leonardo said visible results motivated their community to stay engaged and take pride in their efforts. “Noong nakaraang taon po, second place lang kami. Siyempre, gusto na naming maging number one. Kaya nang dumating ang pagkakataong ito, sinabi ko talaga sa mga kasamahan ko na gagawin namin ang lahat para makuha ang number one,” Leonardo said. “Pinasasalamatan po namin ang Coca-Cola sa patuloy na pagpili sa’ming barangay upang maging bahagi ng programang ito. Kaya inalagaan at sinuportahan namin nang husto ang aming pagsali dito.”

Barangay Tejeros receives tools to help sustain recycling and cleanliness initiatives, supporting the community’s efforts to keep participation strong beyond the campaign.

Along with their recognition, Barangay Tejeros was given 10 Coca-Cola stools made from recycled plastic, a Barangay Tapon to Ipon tent, Coca-Cola beverages for community events, and a Premium Linis Barangay Kit with cleaning and safety supplies. The barangay plans to integrate these into existing programs and continue encouraging participation from households and sari-sari stores.

Sustaining momentum beyond the campaign

For Coca-Cola Philippines, the nationwide recycling initiative forms part of a broader collection initiative, which includes over 6,000 collection points nationwide. The aim is to bring the collected bottles to PETValue Philippines, the country’s first food-grade bottle-to-bottle recycling facility located in General Trias, Cavite. PETValue Philippines processes used PET bottles and transforms them into recycled PET (rPET), which can be used to produce new food-grade beverage bottles.

“Programs like Barangay Tapon to Ipon foster the spirit of bayanihan, bringing communities together to achieve a shared goal,” said Tony Del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines and Vice President for Franchise Operations East of Coca‑Cola Far East Limited (CCFEL). “By making recycling fun and engaging, we help barangays build a culture of sustainability, where collective action at the grassroots creates ripple effects that can help strengthen recycling practices in communities across the country.”

Pickleball’s Development as PH’s New Community Sport: From Weekend Rallies to National Play

More than a game, pickleball isn’t just being played by Filipinos—it’s being built, and the whole country is all in. People with well-coordinated athletic fits, well-worn sneakers, and colorful paddles all set and waiting at the baseline are some of the telltale markers you’ll see if you go past any court these days. And the game for which everyone is waiting in line? Pickleball.

What started out as a lighthearted weekend demonstration has swiftly grown into a major movement. Pickleball is becoming increasingly popular across the nation, and it’s not by coincidence. The sport is evolving from unstructured play to a national framework that unites players, organizers, and communities under the direction of the Philippine Pickleball Federation (PPF). Growing the game sustainably and correctly is the ambitiously basic goal.

So, who’s drawing up the game plan, if you’ll ask? PPF. This organization is recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, and a Founding Member of the Global Pickleball Federation. PPF means serious business, as they’re doing much more than just handing out paddles.

Raising the bar even higher, PPF launched the Philippine Pickleball Participant (PPP) Registry, a national database for players, coaches, and officials. Leveling up the experience, PPF also implemented the Official National Ranking System last January 1, 2026.

“In just a few years, we have seen tremendous organic growth (in Pickleball), and that’s something we celebrate. But now, it’s time to support that enthusiasm with systems that ensure fairness, credibility, and long-term development,” said Shery Anne Cu, President, Philippine Pickleball Federation.

Behind the scenes, the federation is creating and setting down standardized pathways for tournaments, officiating, and coaching. This brings clarity and consistency to every level of play, ensuring that everyone, from energetic first-timers to seasoned senior players, can step onto the court knowing that they’re part of an inclusive, safe, and well-organized ecosystem.

Building on that commitment, Skechers embraced pickleball at its grassroots stage and advocated for PPF since the rise of the sport. Going beyond traditional support, Skechers developed a dedicated pickleball footwear that’s engineered specifically for the court.

At the same time, Skechers has demonstrated its wholehearted involvement to the sport by supporting key events, with highlights like the Street Pickleball exhibition, which took place in late November 2025 at the GPF Global Pickleball Congress, as well as the first-ever Philippine Pickleball National Championship held last May 30 to June 1, 2025. The brand also welcomed professional pickleball champions like Sarah Jane Lim-Narvasa and Leander Lazaro as official Skechers Pickleball Athletes. For Skechers, it’s clear that this isn’t just a partnership. It’s a shared journey, from start to finish.

If there’s another defining moment that shows how far the sport has come, it’s this: the inaugural Skechers Pickleball 1st Philippine Pickleball Amateur Nationals, set to take place from March 28 to March 30 at Tela Park Pickleball Center, Las Piñas City. Co-presented by Skechers, the Nationals are more than just another tournament—they’re a statement. In addition, the scheduled competitions will be the second tournament in contribution to the official national rankings. It’s a defining milestone for the federation’s long-term development plan. The said event brings together amateur players from across the country to compete under standards that champion safety, fairness, and excellence.

“For us, the Nationals mark a turning point for pickleball in the country. It’s inspiring to see Filipinos step onto the court and into a more connected community with Skechers every step of the way,” said Sue Pasustento, Country Manager, Skechers Philippines.

It also spotlights partners and contributors who share a common vision—not just to grow the sport fast, but to grow it responsibly.

“What we are building is not just tournaments. We are building a credible pathway for athletes, a coordinated environment for organizers, a transparent ranking system, and a sustainable future for the sport in the country,” Cu shared.

Cu went on to say that the federation, organizers, players, and partners must continue to work together for pickleball to be a huge success in the nation.

With all of these combined efforts, pickleball is becoming more than just a fad in the Philippines. It’s a burgeoning community sport propelled by players who are just getting started, inspired by passion, and supported by a robust national framework. One thing is evident from events like the Nationals on March 28–30: Filipino pickleball’s future is not only bright but already underway.

P-Pop girl group VVINK explores the poetry of unspoken love in new single “Kailan Ka Aamin”

VVINK’s first release of 2026 reveals a softer sonic palette and a deeper creative involvement from the five-piece pop act

Rising P-Pop group VVINK has dropped “Kailan Ka Aamin,” which serves as the first pre-release single from their upcoming full-length debut album under FlipMusic. Written by acclaimed Filipino songwriter Nica del Rosario and produced by Julius James “Bojam” De Belen, the catchy pop ballad introduces a more intimate direction for VVINK in terms of musicality and songwriting.

A tender, coming-of-age confession, “Kailan Ka Aamin” was inspired by the Thai Girls Love (GL) pair “MilkLove,” and the playful dynamic fans have associated with them. It’s a story many listeners will instantly recognize: two people who clearly feel the same way, yet neither has gathered the courage to say it out loud.

Instead of the usual perspective of someone secretly admiring a crush, the song unfolds from the point of view of the one on the receiving end: someone who senses the same feelings but is growing impatient with the silence. Drawing from the Filipino experience of being a “yearner,” the track embraces the emotional language of young love: hallway glances, teasing friends, unsent messages, and the courage slowly building toward confession.

Kailan Ka Amin was inspired by MilkLove, my favorite Thai GL pair who have starred together in various GL series such as 23.5 and Whale Store XOXO,” Nica del Rosario, the song’s composer, explains. “Their Pinoy fans have playfully equated the question, “kailan ka aamin?” with their dynamic after one interview when they were asked what they would do if they liked someone. Milk said that she doesn’t have the nerve to confess, while Love said she won’t confess either and will just wait for the person to make a move. These remarks led their fans to jokingly say that they’re playing a game of “tagu-taguan ng feelings. (hiding feelings in English).”

Production and collaboration

Sonically, “Kailan Ka Aamin” weaves bubblegum pop influences with ‘80s-inspired production and effervescent melodies. The production balances warmth and restraint, allowing VVINK’s delicate vocal style to take center stage while building a wistful atmosphere that mirrors the song’s emotional anticipation. From its soft opening to its sweeping chorus, the bop carries a dreamlike quality that sets it apart from its previous releases.

“Working with Sir Jumbo De Belen and Ms. Nica del Rosario was such a great experience for us,” shares VVINK in a press statement. “When we first heard the demo, the emotion was already very strong. They really guided us through the meaning of the lyrics, so we understood the story before recording. The demo felt personal, but the final version feels complete. It still has the same heart, but now it sounds more VVINK.”

Beyond the recording itself, the five-member powerhouse maintained a sense of ownership carried throughout the entire production process. With encouragement from the production team, the female pop group contributed ad-libs and interpretive nuances that ultimately define the track’s character. They also stayed closely involved in other aspects of the behind-the-scenes work, including contributing ideas for concepts, styling, and even vocal arrangements during studio sessions.

“Kailan Ka Aamin” arrives alongside a visually striking music video helmed by Nolan Bernardino with Dondi Narciso. Stripping the concept down to its barest essentials, the visuals highlight both performance and atmosphere, presenting VVINK’s performance against both an urban skyline and a dreamlike forest setting.

According to Bernardino, the concept centers on showcasing the group’s natural charisma and beauty. “The music video is as simple as it gets,” Bernardino reveals. “Here we highlight a different side of the girls. This video is all about beauty: the beautiful vocals and performance, with a very pleasant but dynamic choreography. It is a performance that you just want to watch over and over again.”

For VVINK, filming “Kailan Ka Aamin” was indeed a memorable experience. “Working with Direk Nolan Bernardino and Direk Dondi Narciso has always felt light,” the Filipino femme alphas reveal. “They make collaboration fun and creative, allowing everyone to freely share ideas while still feeling guided and aligned.”

Movement, Memory, and Migration: Exploring the Wider Impact of Paglalakbay

Migration has long been an important part of the Filipino experience. As an archipelagic country shaped by a long history of maritime travel, crossing the seas—for exploration, trade, work, or survival—has greatly influenced Filipino identity through the generations. Within this broader cultural background, Paglalakbay, an upcoming ballet by Ballet Philippines, explores themes of journey, displacement, and the search for belonging.

Although the production is inspired by the early seafaring traditions of island communities, its concept reflects a continuing story that reaches into the present. Today, the Philippines remains one of the world’s leading sources of overseas workers, with millions of Filipinos living and working abroad. This widespread migration has created a large diaspora, forming strong connections of family, labor, and cultural exchange across different parts of the world.

Migration has deeply shaped the Filipino identity, from the early seafaring journeys of island communities to the present-day movement of Filipinos working abroad. This long history of crossing seas reflects the resilience and determination of Filipinos in search of better opportunities and a sense of belonging. Paglalakbay by Ballet Philippines highlights this continuing story, showing how migration has connected Filipino families, cultures, and communities across the world, while still keeping strong ties to the Philippines.

In this sense, migration is not merely a historical phenomenon but an ongoing social reality. The emotional and cultural dimensions of leaving home—separation from family, adaptation to unfamiliar environments, and the preservation of identity across distance—have become deeply embedded in the national consciousness.

Paglalakbay approaches these themes through the language of dance rather than direct narrative. The libretto is intentionally structured as a poetic framework rather than a linear historical account, allowing movement to articulate experiences that are often difficult to express through words alone. Through choreography, gesture, and spatial composition, the ballet reflects on the physical and emotional dynamics of departure, endurance, and return.

Choreographer Mikhail Martynyuk interprets these ideas through shifting ensemble formations and fluid patterns of movement that suggest both collective journeys and individual experiences. Composer Vincenzo de Leon’s score creates an atmospheric sonic environment that evokes the vastness of the sea—a recurring symbol in both the historical and contemporary narratives of migration. Visual artist Leeroy New contributes a stage design that gestures toward landscapes shaped by wind, stone, and horizon, reinforcing the sense of movement across space and time.

Within this framework, Paglalakbay can be understood not only as an artistic production but also as a cultural reflection. The ballet gestures toward the continuity between ancient patterns of mobility and modern forms of transnational movement, highlighting how the idea of journey remains central to Filipino life.

The work also carries a more personal dimension. The production’s co-producer notes that the project was partly inspired by reflections on family and intergenerational memory, particularly the ways in which heritage and identity are transmitted through lived experience. In this regard, the ballet’s exploration of migration becomes both collective and intimate, acknowledging the many ways individuals carry their sense of home across distance.

Ultimately, Paglalakbay proposes that movement—whether across oceans, cultures, or generations—is fundamental to the human story. By engaging with migration as both historical legacy and contemporary reality, the ballet invites audiences to reflect on the enduring relationship between place, memory, and identity within the Filipino experience.

PHILIPPINE BOOK FESTIVAL 2026 STRENGTHENS ITS COMMITMENT TO THE GROWTH OF LOCAL PUBLISHING

THE National Book Development Board (NBDB) is all set for the 4th Philippine Book Festival (PBF)— the country’s only marketplace dedicated exclusively to all-Filipino books and published works, and a shared third place for publishers, writers, illustrators, readers, educators, and industry stakeholders. The festival runs from March 12 to 15, 2026 at the Megatrade Hall, 5th Floor, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

“With the continued interest we saw in the last few years, we are encouraged by the growing appreciation for Filipino stories and content,” said NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade. “The strong public response affirms that there is a meaningful demand for books that reflect our own culture, languages, and lived experiences.”

Building on that momentum, the NBDB sees PBF 2026 as an opportunity not only to expand visitor turnout and exhibitor participation but also to strengthen access to locally produced books and learning materials. In a milestone for the festival, Day 1 (March 12) will be open to the general public for the first time, welcoming all readers alongside the Department of Education (DepEd) and its book evaluators from across the country.

Four Realms, One Rainforest

PBF 2026 reimagines its four signature realms within a rainforest-inspired setting. Aral Aklat highlights books as tools for learning and discovery, featuring textbooks and teaching guides. Booktopia invites visitors to explore the breadth of Filipino fiction and nonfiction. Kid Lit nurtures early readers through interactive, child-friendly experiences. Komiks celebrates the visual richness of Filipino comics and graphic storytelling.

This year’s lineup brings together the full spectrum of Philippine literary life. National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario, and prominent historian Ambeth Ocampo will be on hand for book signings alongside trade-book superstars Jonaxx and Ron Canimo, kidlit masters Eugene Evasco and Luis Gatmaitan, and komiks legends Manix Abrera and Pol Medina. GMA Network, together with PaperKat Books, will also launch “Encantadia Chronicles: Sang’gre” at PBF 2026.

Beyond the realms, the festival offers a range of spaces for connection: Lugar Lagdaan for book signings and reader-author meetups; Bahay Ilustrador for a look into the world of visual storytellers; Gubat ng Karunungan for workshops, talks, and masterclasses; the Fiesta Stage for major programming and performances; and Umpukan for informal community conversations.

The NBDB, in cooperation with the National Library of the Philippines, will also feature facsimiles of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, Doctrina Christiana, and Fr. Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas—rare works that anchor the festival in the Philippines’ deep literary heritage.

A highlight of the four-day run is the 43rd National Book Awards (NBA), to be held on March 14 at the Fiesta Stage. The NBA acknowledges the works of authors, illustrators, editors, translators, and publishers whose books have helped shape the country’s literary landscape.

Into the Gubat ng Karunungan

This year’s festival takes its theme from the richness underfoot and overhead: Gubat ng Karunungan, or Rainforest of Knowledge. The key visual, crafted by returning artist and designer Joffrey “Pepot” Atienza, follows two characters, Yaz and Ye-ey, as they journey through a teeming rainforest, taking in its flora, fauna, and falls.

Drawing on his daily life at the foot of Mount Banahaw in Lucban, Quezon, Atienza wove recycled paper into the artwork as a deliberate gesture: the same trees that give us paper carry the stories we tell. “Our stories, our books, and our karunungan all start here—in the biodiversity we need to protect,” he said.

“The Philippine Book Festival is positioned not only as a literary event but also as a third place that connects key players in the publishing and education sectors,” Aquino-Tugade said. “By convening publishers, institutional buyers, educators, and readers in a single venue, the festival supports broader efforts to improve access to quality Philippine books and sustain the local publishing industry.”
