Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft organization Expands Comprehensive Cleft Care Services Across Philippines

Smile Train announced today the establishment of four Comprehensive Cleft Care (CCC) centers across the Philippines to increase accessibility of treatment to cleft-affected individuals and their families. Ongoing reality that babies are born with a cleft everyday is more than 540, that calls for comprehensive solutions to help them overcome challenges and live a happy, healthy life.

For the past two decades, Smile Train has supported more than 64,000 cleft surgeries through its 50+ partner hospitals and organizations throughout Philippines. As the organization marks its 20th anniversary in the country, it is further expanding its services to include nutrition support, orthodontic and dental treatment, and speech therapy in more locations across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

“Smile Train’s goal is to provide those born with a cleft the necessary holistic care beyond their initial surgeries. We will continue to build a network that will bring comprehensive cleft care to Filipinos, so they have the support and the tools they need to overcome any challenge. Through this network and these comprehensive cleft centers, we aim to ultimately provide them the ability to work, play, and live happy, healthy and productive lives,” said Kimmy Coseteng-Flaviano, Smile Train’s Vice-President for South East Asia.

Smile Train’s geographical and programmatic expansion comes as the organization celebrates National Cleft and Craniofacial awareness month this July. Smile Train has launched comprehensive cleft centers at partner hospitals including the Philippine Band of Mercy and Marikina St. Vincent General Hospital in Metro Manila, San Fernandino Hospital in Pampanga, and Mabuhay Deseret Foundation in ARC Hospital in Cebu. At these centers, in addition to surgeries, parents and patients in need can access nutrition counselling and nutrition services, orthodontic treatment, and speech therapy sessions at no cost.

These institutions have served as Smile Train’s partners for years, helping patients from across different provinces and performing thousands of cleft surgeries with the assistance of Smile Train, and will be continuing to do so in an increased capacity as CCC centers. Philippine Band of Mercy has performed 25,300 Smile Train-funded cleft surgeries since 2002; Marikina St. Vincent has performed 1,900+ cleft surgeries since 2011; San Fernando Hospital has done over 1,000 cleft surgeries since 2011; and Mabuhay Deseret Foundation has performed 1,500+ cleft surgeries since 2008. Additional partner hospitals will be able to provide CCC in the coming months.

More on Comprehensive Cleft Care (CCC)

Comprehensive cleft care complements cleft surgery, which Smile Train has been providing at no cost to families in need for over 20 years in the Philippines. Cleft treatment is not a one-off process or even just a series of surgeries, but often requires a holistic approach including nutritional support, dental and orthodontic care, psychosocial support, and speech therapy. CCC is provided by an interdisciplinary, supportive team of highly trained professionals that typically includes geneticists, nutritionists, surgeons, nurses, speech therapists, ENTs, audiologists, mental health counselors, dentists, and orthodontists, among others. For Smile Train and its medical partners, CCC means that each person with cleft has access to all the care they need in order to thrive.

The expansion of Smile Train’s CCC footprint also supports its efforts to promote a working telehealth network, which will allow patients to access CCC despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and geography.

In the Philippines, the pandemic has not gotten in the way of Smile Train’s efforts to help cleft patients, providing over 1,800+ surgeries (pandemic-related) done in 2020, and 1,120 in the first 6 months of 2021 with 26 partners actively doing surgeries.

Since the start of the pandemic, Smile Train’s speech telehealth program in the Philippines has treated over 200 patients, providing them with more than 1,000 cleft care-related sessions. Recently, the organization launched the country’s first Filipino speech therapy mobile application which serves as a platform for more patients and families born with cleft to continue to receive comprehensive cleft care with minimal disruptions.

Here’s where we’re at in terms of voter registration—and how much further we still have to go

By just three months till the voter registration period, where do we stand in terms of voter registration? According to Director James Jimenez of the Commissions on Elections (COMELEC), there are now 60 million registered voters and 4.3 million new voters who will cast ballots in the 2022 Local and National Elections. According to COMELEC, the total number voters will reach 62 million by the time elections are held next year. This statement was given and provided during the non-profit and non-partisan campaign Vote Pilipinas’ virtual town hall, Magparehistro Ka! On July 8, 2021, an online event hosted by Zoom presented a lineup of speakers, including Jimenez, who discussed the present situation of voter registration in the Philippines and the collective action Filipinos must do to narrow the gap before registration shuts in September 2021.

According to COMELEC speakers, voter registration should be done in a group. They are urging schools to exempt their children so that they can participate in this major event and use their authority and right to decide on the destiny of their country. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, COMELEC informs the public that health precautions are in place when they come to register to vote. Participants in the town hall were able to directly ask COMELEC questions about voter registration.

During the town hall, COMELEC Commissioner Maria Rowena V. Guanzon delivered the keynote address; IHM CEO and founder Ces Rondario opened the program; several sessions with COMELEC’s Offices of the Election Officer (OEO) across Luzon provinces shared insights; and new Vote Pilipinas partners, including Smart Communications, the LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Creator and Influencer Council of the Philippines (CICP), and Greenbulb Communications, were introduced with their representatives present. On June 7, 2021, IHM officially partnered with Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) to ramp up the programs and campaigns of Vote Pilipinas, an IHM project and the official partner of COMELEC in disseminating information on voters’ registration.

Vote Pilipinas plans to hold two more Magparehistro Ka! Town halls before the registration deadline.

Keeping hydrated is important during the wet season to avoid disease

The country’s weather bureau has announced the start of the rainy season, signaling the end of the scorching summer days. We must be vigilant during this season since numerous ailments occur.

Diarrhea generated by viral or bacterial infection; watery disorders such as typhoid fever, cholera, and leptospirosis; and vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are among them.

To avoid contracting these diseases, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country—reminds the public to keep hydrated, especially that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.

“It is important that we keep our immune system strong. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stay hydrated,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

Here are some healthy behaviors you can follow to keep active and avoid ailments.

Eat healthy

What you consume today will have a huge impact on your health in the future. A good eating habit is one of the most basic practices to have a robust immune system.

Making a well-balanced meal is simple – just add more fruits and vegetables, choose whole grain food, switch to low or zero fat options, and cut back on sugar.

Exercise regularly

Exercising remains one of the most effective methods to strengthen your body during the rainy season. You do not have to buy expensive machines or pay for gym subscriptions. You only need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. To safely exercise at home, you may check various workout videos online. If you opt to do outdoor walk or run, follow social distancing and other safety protocols.

As part of your workout routine, replenish what you lose in sweat with sports drinks like Gatorade. It contains electrolytes that rehydrate your body to avoid dehydration.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is as important as eating healthy and exercising. A study from the Carnegie Mellon University found that people with poor, short sleep have greater chance of getting sick.

Quality sleep helps uplift your immune system. To get quality sleep, reduce your blue light exposure at night, avoid caffeinated drinks before bedtime, and reduce day time naps, among others.

Hydrate

Proper hydration is vital in having a strong immune system. It detoxifies and flushes out waste materials from your body. It also helps transport nutrients to our organ systems.

Taking in safe water is a must to avoid infection from water-borne diseases. To have a clean drinking water, you need to boil water for at least three minutes or do water chlorination. Or you can drink purified bottled water, like Aquafina and Premiere.

If you’re moving all day and feel sluggish or tired, that’s because you lose more than just water when you sweat.  You lose fluids and electrolytes. With this, it’s important for us to stay healthy and hydrated with an Electrolyte Drink like Gatorade Ion.

“Even during rainy season, we need to hydrate to arm our body from diseases and keep our immunity in top shape. Over the years, PCPPI has been helping Filipinos achieve that with our hydration drinks,” Ong said.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of well-known beverage brands in the Philippines: Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Sting, Premier, Milkis, and Aquafina.

TikTok’s Viral Tracks Get a New Perspective on Life

TikTok, the most popular platform for short-form mobile video, has seen the birth of a slew of brilliant artists and viral content. Many aspiring and up-and-coming musicians have found their place in the community, fearlessly sharing their original compositions and covers of popular songs with anybody who enjoys music.

Seeing great potential in these music creators, TikTok is taking the initiative to support them by breathing new life into viral songs on the platform, and helping their music grow. TikTok does this by tapping onto popular creators to record cover versions of these viral tracks, and adding them into the immense music library in TikTok that users can easily access on the app.

TikTok is where music begins, and a number of remade songs have already soared in prominence among creators since their June release. The first is a Zendee rendition of Cutie Uyyy, a Visayan song. After that, AD BEAT’ performed Ikaw Lang, a cover of the song.

Cutie Uyyy

The southern part of the Philippines may be considered an untapped resource when it comes to musical talent, and Cutie Uyy is proof of this. The song is so catchy that it gained recognition all over the country after its initial release in February 2020, and eventually went viral on TikTok, even though many listeners did not understand its lyrics.

Cutie Uyyy, a Bisaya phrase that means Hey Cutie, is an R&B Hip-Hop song that talks about young love, and being infatuated with a cute girl you just met. A year after it first went viral, TikTok gave this track a second life through a cover version performed by one of its top music creators, Zendee, who also hails from the southern part of the Philippines.

Listen to Zendee’s version of Cutie Uyyy here. Alternate versions of the track – Cutie Uyyy (Chorus) and Cutie Uyyy (Slowed Chorus) –  are also available for creators on TikTok

Ikaw Lang

Released by the local band, Nobita, in May 2020, Ikaw Lang, which means Only You in English, is a love song that speaks of faithfulness, trust and devotion. The song recently experienced a resurgence on TikTok and other platforms, even making it to Spotify’s Viral 50 PH playlist. Since then, its music video has already hit over a million views.

Re-released on TikTok by real-life couple, Adrian Ferrer and Alliyah Cadelina, Ikaw Lang was given a beautiful new twist on the platform, thanks to the beautiful mix of Aaliyah’s angelic voice and Adrian’s prolific beatboxing skills. Singing together about a dream-come-true kind of love, the couple produced a timeless, romantic track that can easily melt the heart of anyone who listens to it.

Listen to a snippet of AD BEAT’s version of Ikaw Lang here. A 30-second cut of the track is also available on TikTok. Watch out for the release of the full song this July.
