Largest gathering of advocates for People on the Spectrum in Southeast Asia: SM Cares and the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) bring together 47,500 advocates nationwide for 2026 ASP Angels Walk with SM

Thousands of participants gather at SM Mall of Asia Arena for the ASP Angels Walk for Autism 2026, demonstrating nationwide support for autism acceptance, accommodation and appreciation.

The Autism Society Philippines (ASP), together with SM Cares and its partners, gathered 47,500 allies and advocates nationwide together at the ASP Angels Walk for Autism last April 26, 2026. The record-breaking attendance this year reflects the growing support for the Autism Community through collective programs and efforts done by SM Cares and the ASP in forging an Autism-OK Philippines.

United voices and shared purpose take center stage at ASP Angels Walk for Autism 2026, as Mr. Hans Sy officially cues the walk for inclusion.

For close to two decades, SM hosted the ASP Angels Walk as a celebration that aims to turn a long-standing advocacy into a meaningful celebration of inclusion, dignity, and hope. This year’s celebration further expanded this advocacy by empowering communities through simultaneous walks across SM’s most-loved malls nationwide.

“ASP Angels Walk reminds us that inclusion is about creating space, and more importantly, making people feel that they truly belong. At SM, we are honored to walk united with the autism community—their families and fellow advocates who have long shown us the power of courage and perseverance. This commitment is about pursuing transformative inclusivity: empowering communities until every person is seen, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive,” said Steven Tan, President, SM Supermalls.

Barrier-free inclusion and transformative action

This year’s theme “Aumbitious. Aarangkada. Aangat.”, encouraged like-minded advocates to turn aspirations and conversations on impactful inclusivity into actions that are not only felt but are transformative.

To prepare for the event the SM Mall of Asia Arena’s venue team underwent specialized training from the Department of Tourism called “Barrier-Free Tourism Kaya Natin.” The comprehensive session focused on enhancing accessibility and inclusivity for customers on the spectrum ensuring their safety and wellbeing while in the premises.

SM Book Nook receives the ASP Autism Works Partner of the Year Award, represented by Ms. Hanna Carinna Sy, recognizing its commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for the autism community.

This year’s event was also made special through the recognition of meaningful partners in the advocacy, including SM Book Nook, which was honored as ASP Autism Works Partner of the Year. The distinction reflects how inclusive community spaces can help open more opportunities for learning, engagement, and belonging. Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte was also recognized with the Hans T. Sy Leadership Award for Autism Inclusion and Welfare, honoring leadership that supports the autism community in meaningful and lasting ways.

Collaborative Advocacy

Families and participants join the walk during the ASP Angels Walk for Autism 2026, highlighting community support and inclusive participation.

Since its inception, the ASP Angels Walk has grown into a long-standing movement that champions inclusion and advances the vision of an Autism-OK Philippines. The movement is reinforced by SM’s pursuit of becoming a truly inclusive Mall for All—accepting, accommodating, and appreciative of customers no matter what their needs may be.

Participants, including families and children, join the ASP Angels Walk for Autism 2026 at SM City Tuguegarao and SM City Davao, reflecting widespread community support and inclusive participation across regions.

As a continuing partner of ASP, SM Cares remains committed to building spaces and programs that support the autism community throughout the year. With sustained initiatives in inclusion, accessibility, and community engagement, SM continues to stand with individuals on the spectrum and their families—always working toward a future where no one is left behind.

SM employee volunteers gather in solidarity during the ASP Angels Walk for Autism 2026, demonstrating corporate and community support for autism inclusion.

Held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City and simultaneously in SM City Bacolod, SM City Baguio, SM City Butuan, SM Seaside City Cebu, SM City Davao, SM City Iloilo, SM City Lipa, SM City Lucena, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Tuguegarao, and Virac Town Plaza, this year’s ASP Angels Walk continued to unite communities across the country in support of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.

The Real Story Is on the Back: Simplifying Milk Labels for the Modern Pinoy Mom

When picking milk for your child, what usually influences your choice? Is it a trusted brand, an attractive design, or the claims shown on the front label? It’s easy to be drawn to eye-catching packaging, but making a truly informed decision starts with checking the information on the back.

Under Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, milk products are required to clearly declare their ingredient list in descending order by weight, nutritional composition, and raw material sources, making it the most reliable basis for evaluating quality.

Yet, a study by Acta Medica Philippina reveals that nearly half of Filipino adults don’t read food labels, and only a small fraction checks the Nutrition Facts. This lack of “label interest” often leaves families vulnerable to promotional jargon rather than actual nutritional value. Simply put, the front promotes, but the back proves.

From “Gut Feel” to Informed Choice

Milk selection is often guided by instinct or vague recommendations. However, shifting from “gut feel” to informed decision-making starts with knowing where to look.

Two key sections on the label can quickly provide valuable insight:

  1. Ingredient List Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest quantity, making the first ingredient the most significant. In the case of milk, parents should choose products that list “Fresh Milk” as its first ingredient, signifying that it makes up the largest portion of the product.
  2. Nutrition Facts Table– This outlines the levels of essential nutrients such as protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals, providing a more objective basis for comparison beyond general claims like “nutritious” or “fortified.”

By focusing on these areas, parents can move beyond the brand message fluff and better understand what they are giving their children.

Decoding Nutrition and Avoiding Red Flags

For many Pinoy moms, the scientific jargons on the back of the tin can be intimidating. But understanding these terms will be key to providing better nutrition for your child. Look for these nutrients that can support your child’s overall health:

  • Lactoferrin:A naturally-occurring iron-binding protein naturally found in milk that helps support a strong immune system.
  • GOS & FOS (Prebiotics):These are not “chemicals”; they are dietary fibers that feed the good bacteria in the gut, supporting a healthy digestive system and stronger immunity, since 70% of immune cells reside in the gut.
  • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) & ARA (Arachidonic Acid):These are fatty acids essential for cognitive development and sharp vision.

While identifying the “good” is vital, spotting the “bad” is equally important. Be wary of these three “hidden” sugars:

  • Sucrose:Plain table sugar. It provides empty calories and can lead to tooth decay and a preference for overly sweet foods.
  • Maltodextrin:A highly processed carbohydrate used as a thickener. It has a high glycemic index, meaning it causes rapid spikes in blood sugar.
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS):A sweetener linked to various health concerns, including childhood obesity.

A Smarter Way Forward

In a market flooded with options, the back label is your most honest advisor. As the Acta Medica Philippina research suggests, we need an intensified focus on label education to bridge the gap between “buying” and “nourishing.”

As consumers, a simple first step is to look past the front of the package and make it a habit to check the back label first.

Because ultimately, choosing milk powder isn’t about what catches your eye on the shelf—it’s about what’s inside.

Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) is advancing the development of its third manufacturing facility at TARI Estate, Tarlac City’s newest future-ready industrial mixed-use hub. The company recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially launch the project, which represents a total capital investment of approximately Php 9.1 billion.

The upcoming facility signifies a major expansion for APC as it increases its operational capacity to better serve the changing demands of Filipino consumers. This development reinforces the company’s strong presence in the Philippines, built over more than six decades. The new factory is expected to boost production, streamline the supply chain, and support APC’s commitment to providing high-quality, affordable food products.

According to APC President Daizaburo Koga, “The development of a third factory reflects our long-term commitment to innovation in the Philippine Food industry and the communities we serve. It’s also part of our continuing effort to fulfill our founding purpose to help Filipinos ‘Eat Well, Live Well’. We are strengthening our capability to consistently deliver high-quality flavored seasoning, cooking sauces, and breading mixes that enable Filipinos to experience the joy of cooking delicious, nutritious and affordable meals.”

Overall, APC’s move to build a third factory aligns with the Ajinomoto Group’s 2030 global goal of extending the healthy life expectancy of one billion people and reducing environmental impact by 50% in 2030.

The groundbreaking of APC’s Tarlac factory was supported by its development partners, Aboitiz Economic Estates, the developer of TARI Estate, and CCT Constructors Corporation.

SM Active Hub marks First Anniversary with Nationwide Day of Movement

Communities come together across 24 malls for runs, pickleball, and free play on April 11

Play goes full throttle at SM City Clark as families dive into the energy of SM Active Hub with movement, fun, and connection in one space.

SM Supermalls marked the first anniversary of SM Active Hub with a nationwide activation across its malls, transforming them into the largest playground in the country and the biggest shared space for movement in one synchronized day.

Launched a year ago, SM Active Hub set out to change how people experience malls. Not just as places to shop, but as spaces to move, connect, and live fully. This vision scaled across the entire network.

Kids take the lead at the Push Bike Competition at SM City Bicutan during the nationwide celebration of the SM Active Hub anniversary.

On April 11, SM Active Hub brought “One Day, Every Mall, One Movement” to life. From sunrise to sunset, malls nationwide hosted runs, rallies, and free-play sessions, turning SM into the largest playground in the country for one synchronized day. Main celebrations took place at SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA, anchoring a coordinated, high-energy experience across the country.

Energy spikes at SM City La Union as players bring the heat to beach volleyball, powering the momentum of SM Active Hub.

SM maximizes every space to build the largest playground in the country, where movement is shared and accessible. Across its malls, Filipinos engage in running, pickleball, ice hockey, figure skating, basketball, volleyball, biking, and football, drawing both seasoned athletes and first-time participants.

Momentum builds at SM Mall of Asia as runners take over the bay during the SM Active Hub anniversary weekend, turning every stride into a celebration of movement.

Running remains a core pillar. In 2026, SM activates 24 malls with dedicated running paths, supported by 45 running clubs and 55 running events. What used to be solo is now social. Partnerships continue to scale the platform, with Runrio leading the Philippine Marathon Majors, including the Manila leg and the 42-kilometer EDSA Marathon on Independence Day.

Pickleball and fitness racing expanded the ecosystem. SM Active Hub featured 12 permanent and 13 semi-permanent pickleball courts, accelerating one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. SM North EDSA hosted the Toby’s Pickleball Superseries, while SM Mall of Asia staged fitness racing events for both competitive and casual participants, with both activations happening on April 11 as part of the anniversary.

Future football stars take the spotlight at SM City Laoag as kids bring energy and skill to the game.

The platform now operates at national scale, connecting thousands of participants, partner brands, and sports communities. This drove repeat participation, longer dwell time, and deeper engagement across malls.

Intensity peaks at SM Mall of Asia as athletes push limits in fitness racing, driving the competitive spirit of SM Active Hub.

The anniversary highlighted “Free Play, Full Fun,” opening activities to families, barkadas, and walk-in mallgoers with no barriers to entry. During Free Play Weekend on April 11 to 12, malls nationwide hosted pickleball, running, bowling, table tennis, Zumba, karatedo, chess, dance fitness, karate, biking, football, basketball, volleyball and taekwondo, turning everyday mall visits into active, shared experiences.

SM Active Hub sustains the momentum beyond the anniversary, with sports activations continuing throughout the summer across all SM Supermalls. A full calendar of runs, pickleball sessions, fitness classes, community tournaments, the Groove Dance Showdown, and Summer Sports Clinic keeps the platform active and accessible, driving repeat visits and sustained engagement while positioning SM as the go-to destination for movement and play during the season.

Game on at SM City Lipa as NU Lipa basketball players lead the action with speed, precision, and control on the court.

SM Supermalls continues to evolve the modern third space, integrating retail, wellness, and social connection into one ecosystem. For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, participation is social, shareable, and community-driven.

A pickleball tournament brought the heat to the courts at SM North EDSA, rallying players and spectators for a full day of fast-paced action.

“This is movement at scale,” said Joaquin San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing, SM Supermalls. “We design spaces where communities gather, stay active, and experience life to the max.”

Free Play Weekend ran alongside the anniversary activities.

Precision and discipline take center stage as young athletes showcase taekwondo at SM City Masinag.

As part of its Here to Move campaign, SM Active Hub welcomed Canadian National Champion and PPA Tour athlete Mackonner Dy for a multi-mall tour from April 9 to 12, reinforcing its push to grow pickleball in the Philippines and expand access to international-level play.

All smiles as Canadian National Champion and PPA Tour athlete Mackonner Dy joins Pickleball for Kids at the pickleball court of SM City Sta. Mesa during the SM Active Hub Anniversary.

SM Active Hub extended beyond the mall through the SM Malls Online app, its official digital companion. Users accessed event schedules, registered for activities, unlocked rewards, and stayed updated on runs, pickleball sessions, and fitness events across all SM malls. It centralized the experience, turning every visit into a connected, on-demand journey.

The “Live Lighter” movement launches in the Philippines as Novo Nordisk introduces a new obesity drug, strengthening science-based care

Live Lighter media event hosted by Ms. Karen Davila

As obesity continues to grow as a key contributor to chronic diseases and strain on the healthcare system in the Philippines, Novo Nordisk has launched the “Live Lighter” movement, a multi-sector initiative designed to reshape public awareness and improve access to care.

Introduced at a media event in Makati City, the campaign promotes a change in perspective—encouraging people to see obesity not as a matter of personal choice alone, but as a complex, chronic condition influenced by biology, environment, and other underlying factors.

Me at the event

The launch of the “Live Lighter” movement highlights an important reminder that health issues like obesity are not simply about personal choices, but are shaped by a mix of biological, environmental, and social factors. It reinforces the need for a more compassionate and science-based understanding of obesity, along with better access to proper care and support systems in the Philippines.

“For almost 30 years, we have studied obesity not as a lifestyle issue, but as a chronic disease. Today is not just about introducing a new treatment option. It is about changing how a country understands obesity,” said Wei Sun, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines. “Through Live Lighter, we aim to help Filipinos treat obesity right—with science, compassion, and with the support they deserve.”

Expanding access to science-based treatment

During the panel discussion

More than a platform for awareness, the Live Lighter movement also signals a step forward in how obesity is treated in the Philippines by introducing innovative, science-based treatment option that goes beyond traditional approaches.

The launch coincides with the introduction of a new prescription therapy based on semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works with the body’s biology to help regulate appetite, energy intake, and metabolic processes. By targeting the underlying mechanisms of obesity, this class of treatment represents a shift toward more holistic and medically guided care.

Dr. Christiana Vida Montefalcon, head of Clinical, Medical, Regulatory & Pharmacovigilance of Novo Nordisk Philippines, underscored that for many patients, obesity is not simply a matter of diet and exercise, but a chronic disease that could require long-term health management and medical treatment. As such, newer therapies can play a critical role particularly for individuals who have struggled to achieve or sustain weight loss through conventional methods alone.

“Advancements like these are changing the way we approach obesity care,” Dr. Montefalcon shared.

“They allow us to address the biological drivers of the disease, giving patients a more realistic and sustainable path toward better health.” “This is not just about weight loss,” she noted. “It is about the over-all health and condition of people living with obesity.”

Reinforcing this, Wei Sun added, “Live Lighter is more than a campaign. It is a commitment to change the way obesity is understood and managed in the Philippines. By bringing sciencebased care, including innovative treatments, closer to patients, we hope to empower more Filipinos to take control of their health in a sustainable and medically guided way.”

From stigma to science

Despite its growing prevalence, obesity continues to be framed largely around willpower and lifestyle choices, often delaying diagnosis and limiting access to appropriate care. Health experts at the launch emphasized that this outdated narrative can prevent people from seeking help and restrict the adoption of effective, evidence-based interventions.

“Treating obesity as a disease changes everything, from how patients are supported to how healthcare systems respond,” said Dr. Montefalcon. “It allows for earlier intervention, more comprehensive care, and better long-term outcomes.”

The Live Lighter movement brings together media, healthcare professionals, industry partners, and patient advocates to promote a more informed and compassionate approach; one that centers on patient realities and health outcomes, not just weight.

A growing public health priority

The initiative comes at a time when obesity is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers—placing a growing burden on individuals, families, and the healthcare system.

Recent findings from the Epidemiological Burden and Cost of Obesity in the Philippines (EpiCOb-PH) study highlight the scale of the challenge, estimating that obesity cost the Philippine economy approximately Php 1.9 trillion in 2025—equivalent to 7.3% of GDP—and could reach up to Php 2.7 trillion when overweight-related conditions are included.

As awareness grows, so does the urgency to address obesity through a more structured, science-based approach that integrates prevention, early intervention, and long-term care.

Collective action

Guest during the event His Excellency Franz-Michael Mellbin, Ambassador of Royal Danish Embassy Manila

Beyond treatment, the movement underscores the need for collective action across sectors to address obesity more effectively—from improving public understanding and reducing stigma to strengthening healthcare systems and expanding access to care.

“Addressing obesity requires more than awareness. It requires a shift in mindset across healthcare, policy, and society,” said Anand Shetty, vice president for Novo Nordisk Business Area Southeast Asia. “With Live Lighter, we are working to move from stigma to science, and from fragmented efforts to a more coordinated, patient-centered approach to care.”

The launch also emphasized the importance of global partnerships in advancing local health priorities, showing how shared expertise and innovation can help make evidence-based care more accessible to patients.

As the “Live Lighter” movement builds momentum, Novo Nordisk seeks to encourage a wider national dialogue—one that reframes obesity not as a personal failing, but as a serious and treatable disease.

“Because when we treat obesity right, we change lives, not just for individuals, but for families and communities,” Wei Sun continued. “That is the impact we hope to achieve through Live Lighter movement.”

Novartis, Parañaque LGU introduce the CORE eReferral System to strengthen and enhance healthcare network support

  • Cardiology and Oncology Referral Enhancement (CORE) digital platform improves coordination across the Parañaque Healthcare Provider Network to support UHC implementation.
  • Collaboration focuses on system strengthening and timely patient access through enhanced referral processes.

Front row (from left): Mr. John Ryan De Guzman, Ms. Catherine Michelle Bonifacio, Dr. Darius Sebastian, Dr. Terence Antonio, Ms. Angelina M. Ramos, and Atty. James Oscar R. Mamerto. Second row (from left): Dr. Ruben Ver D. Bombeta, Counselor Juvan Tin Esplana, and Dr. Ma. Loreleigh S. Obed.

Novartis Healthcare Philippines has formed an official partnership with the Parañaque City Government to reinforce the city’s healthcare system and support the local rollout of Universal Health Care Act Philippines. The collaboration brings together public and private sector expertise to streamline how patients move across health facilities, aiming for more efficient and coordinated referral processes.

Through Resolution No. 2025-308, authority is granted to Edwin C. Olivares to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with Novartis for health programs aligned with UHC. Central to this partnership is the implementation of the Cardiology and Oncology Referral Enhancement (CORE) system—an electronic referral platform that links facilities within the Parañaque Healthcare Provider Network. By prioritizing cardiology and oncology, the initiative targets two of the country’s most prevalent non-communicable diseases—ischemic heart disease and cancer—which continue to place a heavy burden on Filipino patients and the overall healthcare system.

h Novartis for health programs and initiatives aligned with the UHC Act. A key component of the agreement is the rollout of the Cardiology and Oncology Referral Enhancement (CORE) system—an electronic referral (eReferral) platform that connects facilities within the Parañaque Healthcare Provider Network (HCPN). By focusing on cardiology and oncology, the initiative helps address two of the country’s leading non‑communicable diseases—ischemic heart disease and cancer—which continue to place a significant burden on Filipino patients and the health system.¹

The partnership is implemented in close coordination with Mayor Olivares; the Parañaque City Health Office; Dr. Darius J. Sebastian, Officer‑in‑Charge City Health Officer; Dr. Ruben Ver Bombeta, Partnership Focal; and City Councilor Maria Kristine G. Esplana, sponsor of the enabling resolution. This collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to co‑creating sustainable, system‑level solutions for improved health outcomes.

The need for stronger referral coordination

With the devolution of health services to local government units under the Local Government Code and the UHC Act, cities like Parañaque now play a critical role in ensuring that care is accessible, coordinated, and continuous. Administrative Order 2020-0019 further outlines the importance of building a mature Healthcare Provider Network where facilities are linked, services are coordinated, and patients are guided smoothly across levels of care.

However, gaps in referral coordination can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment. CORE addresses this challenge by providing a digital platform that links health facilities within the Parañaque HCPN, allowing referrals to be tracked, managed, and acted on more efficiently.

By strengthening how facilities connect with one another, the system helps patients reach the appropriate level of care faster and supports the city’s progress toward a more integrated UHC implementation. It also supports ongoing efforts to improve care coordination across the city.

“A fully functional Health Care Provider Network (HCPN) relies on strong communication between facilities,” said Dr. Darius J. Sebastian, OIC–City Health Officer. “Through our partnership with Novartis, we are operationalizing this mandate by deploying a web-based referral system. This technology ensures seamless continuity of care as patients navigate from primary care providers to higher-level facilities.

Parañaque City is the first LGU to partner with Novartis on the CORE initiative. To support implementation, CORE training was conducted on December 2, equipping local health workers with the skills needed to use the system in their daily operations.

The rollout is supported by Thinking Machines, the technology partner for the initiative. Beyond the platform itself, the partnership places strong emphasis on capacity-building. This upskilling ensures that health workers are fully supported in adopting digital solutions that can improve service delivery over time.

Moving UHC forward at the local level

The initiative aligns with the Novartis access principles, which recognize that a medicine’s impact depends not only on availability but also on the strength of the systems responsible for delivering care. Guided by the Novartis Health System Strengthening (HSS) Framework, the partnership focuses on addressing delayed referrals—one of the most common barriers to timely and appropriate care for patients with high‑burden diseases.

“Improving access requires more than providing innovative medicines—it also means helping strengthen the systems that enable patients to receive timely care,” said Sushant Anand, Value and Access Head at Novartis. “Through CORE, we are working with Parañaque City to address real‑world gaps in referral pathways. This collaboration demonstrates how co‑creation can support health workers and ultimately help patients get the care they need, when they need it.”
