Explore Toyama and Gifu’s Wellness Culture in Japan

Take a trip to Japan if the hustle and bustle in your life becomes too much and you need a break from it. Before the holiday bustle, relax and rejuvenate in one of its many spas’ therapeutic, mineral-rich waters. Japan’s culture places a strong emphasis on wellness, making onsens, or hot spring baths, widely accessible.

While there are well-known onsen destinations like Hakone that attract a lot of attention, other tourists might be searching for a true get-away. These options in the Toyama and Gifu prefectures each have a certain allure when it comes to wellbeing.

Getting to Toyama and Gifu is easier than ever! These prefectures are located in the Chubu region. Often referred to as the “Heart of Japan,” the Chubu region is known for its stunning natural landscapes, including the iconic Japanese Alps that stretch across both Toyama and Gifu prefectures. This region also serves as a vital transportation hub, connecting major cities like Tokyo and Osaka through its extensive network of highways and railways.

Toyama is connected to Tokyo via the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen. It will take around 2 hours and costs approximately 12,500 yen or approximately PhP 4,800. It’s fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokuriku Arch Pass. Gifu on the other hand is easily accessible by JR Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. Here are some excellent choices for a getaway:

Toyama Prefecture

Toyama is a seaside prefecture in Japan and is home to some of the most private and picturesque onsens in the country. Toyama’s spas are ideal if you are seeking tranquil contemplation and quiet.

  1. Unazuki Onsen

Unazuki Onsen

Unazuki Onsen is on the way to Japan’s tallest dam, the Kurobe Dam. To get to the dam, you will need to take a scenic train ride into the lushly forested gorge. Unazuki is at one of the first stops on the line. The view is beautiful and you can also taste locally brewed beer made with water from Kurobe.

  • Himi Hot Spring Village

Himi Hot Spring Village is a coastal town where you can see the Tateyama mountain range in the distance, almost as if it’s floating on the bay. Here, you can enjoy fresh seafood while also relaxing in the “spa of beauty” which will rejuvenate your body.

  • Omaki Hot Spring

Omaki Hot Spring is the perfect hidden gem if you truly want to get away from it all. Only accessible by boat, this unique isolated resort is rustic and surrounded by woods. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a tanuki–a Japanese raccoon dog.

Gifu Prefecture

Most people looking for traditional Japanese architecture and historical sites will think of Kyoto, but awaiting discovery is Gifu, an area steeped in tradition. Great warlords have fought over this land and their battles have forged the paths of Japanese history.

Gifu is tucked away in the scenic Japanese Alps. There are several onsens to choose from in this area with a wide range of experiences for curious travellers.

  1. Gero Onsen

Gero Onsen

At Gero Onsen, the alkaline water is good for blood circulation and battling fatigue, and also leaves your skin silky smooth. Gero has unique architecture and charming streets. It’s a great addition to your Instagram stories, especially at night when the lights come on.

  • Yamashiro Onsen

Yamashiro Onsen is a hot spring town with public bathhouses. The water here is good for the joints, skin disease, and digestion problems. Be sure not to miss the “ko-soyu” or the “old public bathhouse”. It’s a Meiji period-style building and is a popular draw.

  • Okuhida Onsen

Okuhida is actually a collection of over a hundred open-air pools. It’s located in the Japanese Alps so the view is gorgeous. Also, the town comes alive in the winter with folk festivals and ice shows so the colder months are the ideal time to visit.

Consider staying at a Ryokan if you are visiting Japan for a taste of traditional wellness. Inns called ryokans offer a genuine Japanese experience. They offer traditional lodging, which entails sleeping on tatami mats and enjoying a painstakingly prepared multi-course kaiseki dinner. You won’t find a similar experience anyplace else.

The daily grind might be difficult to handle, particularly as we approach the hectic “ber-months,” but if you take a break every so often, it gets much easier to stay motivated. Visit a Japanese onsen to revitalize your body while taking a vacation and finding your center. Any of these suggestions might be the perfect spot for you to unwind and experience wellness.

In the 5th annual #GirlsCan celebration, World Vision empowers young girls

World Vision #GirlsCan 5th anniversary celebration led by (L-R) World Vision ambassador and #GirlsCan event host Janina Vela, World Vision Philippines branding and media relations Sharon Mesias, event speaker Edith Botecario, youth ambassador Zachi Chua, World Vision Philippines communications manager Shirley Kimmayong, former World Vision sponsored child and event speaker Adora Mendoza, World Vision Philippines resources development director Jun Gordones and strategy management, impact & learning director Vanessa Retuerma.

The globe has long faced formidable obstacles, particularly in the areas of gender inequity and children’s rights. In times of war, economic hardship, and other trying circumstances, young girls are consistently the last to benefit and the first to suffer. As we learned more about the discussion presented by these wonderful women, I boosted my confidence and got empowered by the teachings. Bianca Umali talks more about self-care, and Joyce Pring- Trivino emphasizes the priorities we should set. It is such wholesome talk from these beautiful and empowered women that they try to generate for us.

Together with its advocacy partner Special Olympics Pilipinas and corporate partner Linya-Linya, World Vision, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of children, recently held the #GirlsCan Anniversary Celebration at the Ayala Malls – Manila Bay, the event’s official venue partner, to address these issues, spark conversations, and effect change. The public could attend the festivity.

“We believe that when girls are empowered and given the right opportunities and the right tools, they can make a difference in the society,” said Jun Godornes, World Vision Resource Development director.

Now on its fifth year, #GirlsCan aims to recognize the unique struggles faced by girls in the country and globally, promote their rights, and foster their empowerment. The celebration will brought together advocates, stakeholders, and experts to share their knowledge, foster networking opportunities, and discuss World Vision’s #GirlsCan achievements and future goals.

Hosted by Janina Vela, the anniversary celebration featured inspirational talks from empowered Filipinas including Bianca Umali, Ayn Bernos, and Joyce Pring-Triviño. Renowned singers Christian Bautista and Aicelle Santos also showed their support to the campaign through a sweet serenade and meaningful messages for the attendees.

The #GirlsCan anniversary celebration is a lead up to the International Day of the Girl on October 11, 2023. To sustain the campaign, World Vision Philippines is seeking to help at least 1,000 young Filipinas through its Child Sponsorship program so they can reach their full potential by providing them the right tools to overcome adversity.

By sponsoring a child and making a donation of as little as Php25 per day or Php750 per month, anyone may support the cause. With this sum, the sponsor can assist in giving children access to necessities that can change their lives, such as education, clean water, health, and nutrition. By sending letters, pictures, and updates to the child, sponsors can also develop a relationship with them. The ultimate objective is to assist the sponsored child and his or her family in escaping poverty and creating a self-sustaining community.

Visit the #GirlsCan page at https://www.worldvision.org.ph/1000girls/ to find out more about how you can change a young girl’s life.

Water Sustainability: SM Supermalls is Leading the Change

Every region of the world has been affected by the water problem. Around 1.1 billion people globally lack access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion experience water scarcity for at least one month of the year, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Worse, by 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population could experience water shortages, and ecosystems would suffer.

A number of nations have made considerable advancements toward securing a more sustainable future for the planet as the seriousness of these problems becomes more and more clear. Singapore’s water management strategy and the sophisticated conservation measures used in The Netherlands are two notable examples.

Inspiration for the Philippines

In the Philippines, a multifaceted approach has also been embraced by the public and private sectors in safeguarding and managing water resources. SM Supermalls are at the forefront of the conservation and management of water resources in its mall facilities. Its endeavors form the foundation of a more sustainable and water-secure future that the company has long been advocating.

SM’s Vision: Greening the Future

SM has been recycling water since the 1990s, treating an average of 1 billion gallons of water annually in recent years, equivalent to 1,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools. In line with the SM Green Movement, SM has been continuously working towards responsible consumption and water conservation in its properties.

To illustrate, the SM Supermalls’ comfort rooms have smart fixtures to manage water flow. There are also signages in the mall that advocate wise water use. Wastewater is channeled to the malls’ sewage treatment plants that recycle an estimated total of 4 million cubic meters of water, lessening their dependence on freshwater sources for non-potable uses. SM did this even before the measure was required by way of the Clean Water Act in 2004.

SM Mall of Asia has been involved in various sustainability and environmental initiatives, including water recycling among others.

SM Supermalls utilizes recycled wastewater from the mall for irrigating its gardens.

SM Malls have “Save Water” signages that typically aim to create awareness about water conservation and inspire people to take simple actions to reduce their water consumption

Recently, SM took a step further in resource management by launching the first-ever water filtration system at SM City Baguio. This facility can turn collected rainwater into potable water for mall tenant use such as washing and cooking as well as dishwashing and handwashing, allowing the mall to further lessen its dependence on the freshwater supply of the Baguio community.

The commitment of SM is consistent with global environmental sustainability and climate action objectives. This dedication is further demonstrated by rainwater collecting basins in flood-prone areas and the rainwater filtration system at SM Baguio. These noteworthy initiatives highlight the continued requirement for sustainable practices and legislation.

A Future with More Hope

The path to sustainable water management is still being traveled. Through its activities, SM Supermalls paves the road for a more secure and environmentally friendly future.

SM Prime looks at possible collaboration with a Japanese company for waste-to-fuel solutions

IN PHOTO (Left to right): SM Supermalls Vice President Liza Silerio, SM Prime Chairman of the Executive Committee Hans T. Sy, GUUN Chief Executive Officer Shinji Fujieda, GUUN Philippine Branch Senior Managing Director and General Manager Takeshi Konishi

Leading real estate developer in Southeast Asia, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s GUUN Co. Ltd. to explore a potential partnership to implement waste management solutions by recycling waste paper and plastics as an alternative source of energy called ‘fluff fuel’.

One kind of RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) made from compressed and shred plastics, paper, and fibers is called fluffy fuel. These are utilized as fuels in Japanese power plants, paper mills, and cement producing facilities.

Hans T. Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime, is confident that a collaboration with GUUN will advance the nation’s waste reduction goals. He claimed that Japan has some of the most cutting-edge waste management and recycling systems in the world right now. There is no better partner for SM because we don’t just say we’re huge, we make sure we are; we don’t just say we’re environmentally friendly, we actually take big steps to protect the environment. I’m excited to advance with GUUN as one of the pioneers in the Philippines’ fight against environmental problems.

The Yokohama City, Japan-based GUUN Co., Ltd., which was established in March 2001, recently opened its P200 million, 2,400 square meter waste recycling facility in Tayud, Consolacion, Cebu. In 2014, the company experimented the manufacturing of fluff fuel from plastic trash in Inayawan, Cebu.

Since then, Japan’s Ministry of the Environment has adopted GUUN’s waste-to-fuel technology as a model for advanced low-carbon technology innovation for further deployment in developing countries.

“This will be a milestone partnership for us,” GUNN Chief Executive Officer Shinji Fujieda said after the signing ceremony. “I understand very much how important waste management is for SM and for the Philippines and we look forward to more projects we can do with the properties of SM Prime.”

SM Prime’s initiatives for waste management include waste reduction and effective waste collection and segregation. Over the years, it has implemented programs such as Trash to Cash, Plastic Waste Collection, and E-Waste Collection that have contributed to reducing the total solid waste generation across its real estate portfolio.

Through its pioneering Trash to Cash recycling market, SM Prime has collected and recycled 1.4M kg of plastics, paper, metals, and others in 2022. “We have saved 16,766 trees from the 986,222 kg of paper recycled,” SM Prime disclosed in its 2022 Integrated Report to shareholders.

In the meantime, 42,541kg of plastic garbage from 14 mall locations have been collected by SM’s Plastic garbage Collection program, a cooperation with the Plastic Credit Exchange that was established in February 2021. The E-Waste Collection program for the responsible disposal of WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is also available in all 83 SM Supermalls. The amount of e-waste processed thanks to this initiative was about 7,000 kilos.

SM Scholars Want to Give the Gift of Education to other

New SM scholars recently joined the contract signing event in Pasay.

“I desire to become an educator not just to fulfill a dream but also to be a blessing to the next generation.”

Princess Eunice Motel, 18, an SM scholar who is currently continuing her education at the Philippine Normal University, offers these motivational comments. She is one of the two kids born to Richard, a set man from Caloocan City, and Hildajane, an on-call factory re-packer.

Princess has had a lifelong goal to become a teacher, one that has been ingrained in her heart and mind since she was a young girl. The more she embraced her Christian religion, the clearer this calling became.

SM Scholar and aspiring educator Princess Eunice Motel

“My unwavering commitment to becoming a teacher is directly inspired by the Kidz Life Ministry, a cherished initiative of our church dedicated to teaching children about God’s word. I aspire to be a vessel for sharing knowledge, instilling hope, and nurturing a brighter future for the next generation,” she said.

To pursue her dreams, Princess has chosen to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education at the Philippine Normal University, her dream institution. “PNU is renowned for its ability to nurture exceptional teachers,” she remarked. “As I aspire to become an educator, I also strive for greatness and excellence, and there’s no better place to achieve that than at PNU.”

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Jhona Bolinas is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Education with English as her major. Born in Baliuag, Bulacan, she passed entrance exams at other universities but opted to enroll at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela due to its proximity to her family.

Despite considering other career paths, Jhona opted education, drawing inspiration from her mother, who is also an educator. “Watching, observing, and listening to her, I learned the basics,” she shared. Driven by her love for reading and writing, she also chose to specialize in English.

When asked if she plans to work abroad after graduation, Jhona keeps her options open, recognizing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “But right now, I want to ensure that my mother enjoys a good life before making such a significant decision,” she explained.

Another aspiring educator is Krissa May Oquindo. Her father, a cable technician, is the family’s sole breadwinner while her mother dedicates her time to caring for the family. Krissa completed her senior high school education at the Universidad de Manila. She applied to four State universities and ultimately chose to enroll at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), known for producing graduates highly sought after by employers, as per a recent survey.

SM scholar Krissa May Oquindo (right) aspires to be a teacher for her family and community.

When asked about her motivation to become a teacher, Krissa responded, “Being an educator has always been my passion. From the moment I set foot on a school campus, the idea of standing in front of students and sharing knowledge excites me.” She has selected Science as her major to deepen her understanding of the subject and to enlighten others about it.

Krissa has no plans to teach abroad. She believes that while there is demand for teachers overseas, the same holds true in the Philippines: “My passion for teaching is rooted in caring for the next generation, especially for the youth of our country.”

The SM college scholarship program has helped 3,791 graduates enroll in more than 120 partner schools and institutions around the country over the years. These scholars benefit from complete tuition reimbursement, monthly stipends, seasonal part-time employment options, job offers from the SM Group after graduation, and stimulating extracurricular activities.

SM’s tech-voc scholarship program has also graduated 4,669 students, which has helped to enhance the development of qualified professionals in a variety of sectors

SM Group dedicates its 104th educational facility

SM scholars from Roxas City volunteer to clean the new school building ahead of its turnover.

The President Manuel Roxas Memorial Integrated School-South in Roxas City, Western Visayas, received a fully equipped two-story building from SM Prime through the SM Foundation in time for the start of the school year.

The collaboration’s 104th school building is constructed in accordance with guidelines established by the Department of Education (DepEd). It has four classrooms, each equipped with desks, chairs for left-handed students, and restrooms, one of which is designated for people with disabilities (PWDs) on the ground floor.

Concave blackboards, electric fans, and LED lighting are also included. To be prepared for emergencies, emergency lights were installed in the stairways.

Supporting DepEd’s commitment to ensure that learners have access to water for hygiene and sanitation, SM Foundation installed a handwashing facility along with liquid soap for the community’s use.

To further assist, the SM group will help with the maintenance and upkeep of the said school.

Social Good

SMFI School Building head, Juris Soliman (center) leads the preparation if the school building turnover.

DepEd previously reported that around 21 million students would be enrolled for the 2023–2024 academic year. Only 100,000 out of the more over 300,000 school buildings are in good condition, according to the agency, despite this.

Since 2002, the SM Foundation has participated actively in DepEd’s Adopt-a-School Program, handing over more than 100 school buildings to grassroots communities around the country. This is because the organization believes in the transformative power of education. The aforementioned program aims to reduce classroom overcrowding and create a supportive environment for learning.

More than 1,000 kg of waste are collected by Coca-Cola PH and its partners in Tanza, Cavite’s coastal cleaning

Coca-Cola Philippines President Tony del Rosario joined hundreds of volunteers in the coastal cleanup at Julugan Fish Terminal in Tanza, Cavite

On September 16, as part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), Coca-Cola Philippines, Plastic Bank Philippines, and the Lighthouse Legacy Foundation organized more than 200 volunteers to collect trash and marine garbage at Julugan Fish Terminal in Tanza, Cavite.

Plastic Bank Philippines, ICC Philippines, Lighthouse Legacy Foundation, and the Don Bosco School of Theology were some of the organizations that joined Coca-Cola Philippines in collecting debris and marine waste during the coastal cleanup

To address the issue of coastal waste in the area, workers from the Coca-Cola Philippines system joined forces with waste collection volunteers from its Ecosystem Impact Program with Plastic Bank Philippines, ICC Philippines, Lighthouse Legacy Foundation, the Local Government of Tanza, the Philippine Coast Guard Cavite Chapter, and Don Bosco School of Theology. Together, they collected more than 1,000 kg of waste.

The “World Without Waste” strategy of Coca-Cola Philippines was launched in 2018, well before the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law was passed, according to Zed Avecilla, president of the Lighthouse Legacy Foundation, who praised the company for its long-standing dedication to responsible waste management.

Avecilla also emphasized the impact of raising awareness on the importance of managing waste to prevent them from getting into Philippine waters- through events like ICC. “What we are achieving through these events is the creation of awareness on responsible waste management and educating Filipinos about the EPR Law. In a way, we are appealing to their emotions to help the environment,” he said.

The ICC is renowned as the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean sanitation, with The Coca-Cola Company serving as a founding member of the Trash Free Seas Alliance since 1995. In partnership with its local bottling partners, the company is engaging employees, consumers, and communities in cleanups, providing resources, grants, and in-kind donations to help remove trash from beaches and waterways.

In the Philippines, Coca-Cola is doing its part to prevent marine debris through community-based initiatives like the Ecosystem Impact Program with Plastic Bank. This initiative helps build collection and recycling systems in communities to prevent plastic bottles from ending up in places where they should not be, while at the same time, empowering workers in the solid waste management sector.

Dhang Tecson, Global Director for Country Operations of Plastic Bank, thanked Coca-Cola Philippines for its annual coastal cleanup activity as well as the company’s invaluable contribution to advancing the circular economy of plastics in the Philippines. “Maganda ‘yung ginagawa ng Coca-Cola kasi hindi lang sa ating mga bahay nasisimulan ‘yung action, kundi pati sa ating komunidad (What Coca-Cola is doing is great because change doesn’t just start in our homes but also in our community),” Tecson said.

Coca-Cola bottles can have many lives

Coca-Cola Philippines President Tony del Rosario emphasized that coastal cleanup activity is part of the company’s wider commitment to help tackle plastic waste. “No one wants to see empty packaging end up where it doesn’t belong. Our World Without Waste program is an ambitious global sustainable packaging strategy that aims to help drive a circular economy for our packaging in the Philippines. Together with our partners, we are making progress with still much more to do,” he said.

Coca-Cola Philippines President Tony del Rosario reaffirms the company’s commitment to help address the plastic waste problem through the World Without Waste global sustainable strategy and the May Ikabobote Pa consumer engagement initiative

The Coca-Cola Company’s World Without Waste global sustainable packaging strategy aims to collect the equivalent of every can and bottle it sells by 2030, make 100% of its packaging globally recyclable by 2025, use at least 50% recycled plastic in its packaging by 2030, and unite people to support a clean, healthy environment.

In keeping with this, Coca-Cola Philippines has announced new bottles for Coca-Cola Original (190ml and 390ml) and Wilkins Pure (500ml), in addition to Sprite 500ml introduced in 2019. These bottles are produced entirely from recycled PET plastic (rPET). The business also introduced “May Ikabobote Pa” a consumer interaction program designed to inform people about the recycling options available to them. To make it simpler for customers to return their empty bottles, Coca-Cola Philippines is currently extending its network of more than 2,800 recycling drop-off locations around the nation.
