Team Lakay Coach Mark Sangiao Says Passion Will Dictate Whether Eduard Folayang is Done or Not

Team Lakay head coach and Philippine martial arts pioneer Mark “The Machine” Sangiao has his work cut out for him over the next few weeks. Several of his star athletes are preparing for their respective returns to action, since the Covid-19 pandemic changed the world.

2-time former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, perhaps Sangiao’s most prized pupil, is up to bat first, and will see action next week.

Folayang takes on Australia’s Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso at ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX, which broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore on Friday, 30 October.

Team Lakay are already on their way to Singapore as of this writing, and will soon get acclimated to the ‘Singapore Bubble’ ONE Championship established with the Singapore Government to deal with Covid-19 complications.

Sangiao believes this is a very important fight for Folayang, and one he is determined to win in order to break the Top 5 in his division.

“For us at Team Lakay, every fight, no matter how minor or major it is, it’s very important. This fight in particular is very significant for Eduard, as the result will dictate if he can get back in the list of top lightweight contenders,” said Sangiao.

“During the lockdowns here in Baguio City, we all trained in our respective homes. We only just returned to the gym two months ago, strictly adhering to Covid protocols. It was great for our athletes because they could spar with each other. Right now, we’re working double time, focusing on our game plans and strategies, especially for Eduard.”

In Caruso, Folayang faces a multiple-time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion, who has trained under the legendary Henri Hooft with a handful of top tier ONE athletes including ONE World Champions Aung La N Sang and Martin Nguyen.

A resounding victory over Caruso is necessary, and Sangiao says they’ve already crafted the right game plan to produce a solid win.

“We’ve studied Antonio Caruso’s previous fights and we’ve already come up with a good game plan, which will hopefully work in our favor,” said Sangiao.

After dropping three of his last four, however, Folayang is looking to prove he still has what it takes to compete among the best. Many fans and experts say the end may be near for Folayang, and that the veteran should contemplate retirement, especially if he loses against Caruso.

For Sangiao, the most important thing is where Folayang’s heart is. If Folayang is still dedicated to reaching his dreams and accomplishing his goals, if his heart is still in it, Sangiao believes “Landslide” can still do some damage in the division.

“Eduard is a very talented fighter, no doubt. He has all the skills and tools to succeed on the championship level. And he has a very difficult style to deal with. As long as I can see Eduard being passionate and working hard for his career, I believe he can still get to the highest places in MMA,” said Sangiao.

“I think the end is there for every fighter. No one can fight forever. It’s about listening to your body, and paying attention to your mindset. This fight will answer a lot of questions about Eduard, win or lose. But honestly, we’ve never even discussed his retirement. He still wants to achieve a lot of things in this sport.”

ONE Championship returns on Friday, 30 October with ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX, broadcast live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The blockbuster features four World Title bouts for a total of six compelling martial arts contests.

In the main event, reigning ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang of Myanmar defends his middleweight title against top contender Reinier “The Dutch Knight” de Ridder of The Netherlands.

Join Forces of NTF and McDonald’s Philippines for free COVID-19 testing

The National Task Force (NTF), in partnership with McDonald’s Philippines for the initiative to further expand the country’s testing capacity for COVID-19 RT-PCR testing for its company owned and franchised store employees in NCR as part of the company’s continuous focus on health and safety under its M Safe program. This partnership reinforces the collaboration between the public and private sector for testing and isolation programs. The community testing initiative aims to ensure a safe workplace for its employees and dining experience for its customers. McDonald’s has also recently committed to implement the StaySafe.ph app in its restaurants to improve contact tracing protocols.

“The safety of our employees and customers has always been at the core of our operating culture. It is because of this that we continue to explore and partner with the government and the private sector, to keep the public safe. We believe that more than ever, we have to come together to fight this pandemic to re-start the economy safely and protect the employment of more Filipinos,” said McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO, Kenneth S. Yang.

Beginning September 28 in Palacio de Maynila, one of the Mega Swabbing Facilities set up by the NTF, employees of the company have started to get tested. The company aims to test over 19,000 of its crew and managers in four identified Mega Swabbing Facilities at Mall of Asia Arena (Pasay), Philippine Arena (Sta. Maria, Bulacan), Lakeshore Bicutan (Taguig), and Palacio de Maynila (Manila).

McDonald’s will also be donating three (3) testing booths to one of its long-standing community partners, Pasig City, to support their testing initiatives.

McDonald’s employees will be properly guided and assisted by the company from scheduling, conduct of testing to the release of the results. To limit exposure of the employees and to ensure that the restaurant continues to operate smoothly, only a limited number or crew and managers are scheduled per day. Members of the restaurant management team arranges for the transportation going to the Mega Swabbing Facility, provides assistance on-site for the testing and coordinates the release of results.

Should an employee test positive, McDonald’s will remain in compliance with all the government mandated protocols and will support its employees until they are able to go back to work.

“Through this expanded testing program which we are launching today, you shall not only be ensuring the health and safety of your employees, but also their families and those they come in close contact with every day,” says Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr, Chief Implementer of the National Action Plan Against COVID-19 (NAP COVID-19).

“As we combat the virus, we are very grateful for proactive partners in the private sector such as McDonald’s. Their initiative to test their employees significantly helps strengthen the government’s testing and contact tracing program. We encourage other businesses to follow suit in helping to safely reopen the country’s economy,” says NAP COVID-19 Deputy Chief Implementer Secretary Vince Dizon.

Since the announcement of the enhanced community quarantine, McDonald’s Philippines has been reinforcing its commitment towards safety of people. Under its M Safe program, the company introduced new protocols such as dedicating a safety manager in all its stores and implementing a no-touch policy for Drive-Thru and McDelivery services to ensure employee and customer safety.

Asian American rapper Blahza teams up with producer OnlyM for another chill hop crossover

AsianAmerican hip-hop artist Blahza and Malaysian lo-fi producer OnlyM come together for another chill hop crossover: ‘Drugs’.

‘Drugs’ is a laid back track that envelopes the listener in waves of relaxation. Driven by moody but minimalist soundscapes and smooth beats, the latest collaboration between Blahza and OnlyM settles comfortably into a simmer, taking a step forward in its attempt to embrace subtlety and introspection sonically and lyrically.

Blahza shares about the inspiration behind it: “Everything in life is going good and everyday I’m getting closer to my goals. I used to relax by numbing my mind with intoxicants and I reference that heavily throughout the song. By the end of the song I ask what’s a better high than you? It means that you can get a high from the people around you, like your significant other, or from yourself. You don’t need drugs to get high.”

OnlyM x Blahza

To complement Blahza’s vision, OnlyM decided on a vibe that makes people feel good, highlighting a more optimistic but steady approach in terms of sound and feel. “I wanted something to make people feel good,” the underrated producer shares. “That you could chill out to as summer winds down, and reflect on the good times not just this year, but in life thus far.”

Blahza’s upcoming EP, Sad Songs For Happy People, is scheduled for release in 2021. He is also working on several collaborations dropping every month.

Team Lakay Takes Up New Gaming Hobby to Supplement Martial Arts Training

Stepping into the ONE Championship Circle takes more than just a physical herculean effort, and a display of high-level martial arts skills. It also requires mental fortitude. Which is why martial artists go to great lengths preparing their minds for battle.

Some put on their favorite tunes to help fire them up before a match. Others meditate to help clear their psyche and make their minds more efficient. For some members of the Baguio City-based Team Lakay, however, mental preparation for bouts takes on an interesting new form.

“I’ve been playing Mobile Legends for two years now, but I don’t consider myself a very serious gamer. I only play this to kill time, when I’m cutting weight or waiting for hydration test results to take my mind off the hunger. But when my teammates started playing it, I got even more hooked to it,” said Joshua Pacio, reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion.

“I like it because it’s not just a game, it can teach you about teamwork, strategy, and sometimes patience, similar to MMA.”

Pacio, along with 2-time former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, and former unified and undisputed ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, have taken up Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, or ML, often playing together as a team or with fans on their mobile phones.

They’ve also taken to game streaming, casting their sessions through Facebook in their new streaming channel, “Truth x Lakay Gaming”, which they created just recently with reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera. Fans can catch their favorite ONE superstars playing ML, and even respond to fan queries.

ML is a MOBA game, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, that pits a team of five players against another team of five in a head-to-head battle to ultimately capture each others’ bases. Each player picks a “hero” that he or she controls. Players must work as a team in order to claim victory.

Belingon finds himself enamored by the game, so much so that he doesn’t want to play it too much, lest become addicted to it. “The Silencer” also apologized to fans for his gameplay.

“I think it’s dangerously addictive. If you’re not careful, it can really take over your time. I try not to get too addicted to it! I’m surprised so many fans play this and want to add me. I’m still an amateur, so sorry if I don’t do well,” said Belingon.

For Folayang, ML can be a huge stress relief…as long as he wins. The 36-year-old Philippine combat sports veteran loves the variety of heroes to choose from, and understands that every player has their own role in the team, just like in real life.

“I just started playing this game last March. I like it because it’s all about teamwork and there’s a certain uniqueness to every hero you play. Each hero has a role. It’s a great stress reliever, if you win! If you don’t manage it well and you lose, it can also be stressful. I have a lot of fun meeting fans online,” said Folayang.

“Some fans know it’s me they are playing with and they get excited. There’s also some trash talking going on in this game, it’s funny. But I think we all should respect each other always.”

For the time being, at least, Team Lakay has a new and interesting way to spend their free time together, and continue to forge their bond as brothers on a completely different battlefield. Catch Team Lakay and Brandon Vera on Truth x Lakay Gaming.

ONE Championship returns tonight, Friday, 16 October with ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES II, a previously-recorded, audience-free and behind-closed-doors event for global broadcast.

The Gentle Isolation is coming out with a brand new single “Sound Wave”

Bulacan-based Indie pop outfit Gentle Isolation revisits the eternal appeal of their music favorites on “Sound Wave” and now available on all streaming platforms worldwide via Lilystars Records.

Written in 2014, the effervescent twee pop anthem pays tribute to the obscure pop heroes that inspired the band to make music. “Our latest track is an ode to the music that we held dear like one of our close friends: they come and go because of the inevitable proliferation of trends, but they’ll remain special in our hearts,” guitarist and vocalist Monch Cristobal says.

Gentle Isolation cites New Order, The Stone Roses, Trembling Blue Stars and Belle & Sabastian as inspiration in writing and producing “Sound Wave,” owing their lushly ornate sound and irresistible pop smarts to the cult favorites that define their taste as musicians.

“The intro was inspired by early New Order with minimal drums and melodic basslines setting the tone for something of delicate poise,” Cristobal describes their latest song. “I added synth elements to help shape the sound, while Ness shows up in the chorus with her distinct singing style adding a tinge of sunshine to the mix. To top it off, we incorporated string parts instead of a guitar solo. It is always my style to put the best part on the finale.”

The Gentle Isolation

The Gentle Isolation is a New Wave veteran group composed of Ness Urian(vocals and acoustic guitars), Monch Cristobal (bass, guitars, and synths),and Bach Rudica(drums) as core members, and Rommel Vivar (live guitar player), Law Santiago (live bass player) as session players. They released their debut EP, It Started With An April Shower in 2010, and earned overwhelming praises from critics for its “shining mix of jangly guitars, defined instrumental hooks and addicting pop melodies.”
