Sam-A Gaiyanghadao Finishes Josh Tonna by Technical Knockout to Retain ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Title

Complete Results for ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES

Singapore: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), made a triumphant return to the Singapore Indoor Stadium last Friday night, 9 October. ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES was an audience-free, behind-closed-doors blockbuster that featured the absolute best in local and international martial arts talent.

In the main event of the evening, reigning ONE Strawweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao of Thailand successfully retained his Muay Thai World Title behind a near-flawless performance against ISKA K-1 World Champion and number one ranked contender Josh “Timebomb” Tonna of Australia. Sam-A appeared composed and relaxed to start the bout, delivering a volley of fast boxing combinations and high round kicks in the first round. In the beginning of the second, Sam-A dropped Tonna with a bullet-like left straight, sending the Australian to a mandatory 8-count. Sensing he had his opponent hurt, Sam-A poured on the pressure and dropped Tonna two more times en route to a technical knockout victory.

Former ONE World Title challenger and current fifth-ranked flyweight Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Australia may have boosted himself up the divisional ladder based on his most recent showing. The Gold Coast native drew up a dominant performance, knocking out 3-time IBJJF No-Gi European Champion Aleksi “The Giant” Toivonen of Finland in the first round. McLaren was lightning fast to start the contest, staggering his opponent with a thudding right hand that sent Toivonen to the canvas. Against the fence, McLaren connected on a well-placed knee to the midsection, sending Toivonen back to the mat for good, writhing in pain to force the finish.

Former ONE World Title challenger Amir Khan of Singapore authored a stunning knockout victory, stopping Rahul “The Kerala Krusher” Raju of India in the first round. Khan looked comfortable with his striking and appeared more than ready for a war as soon as the two men began to trade. Raju was able to close the distance on a few occasions, taking Khan down to the mat. The Singaporean, however, made it back up to his feet easily each time and began to wear on Raju with his pressure. Against the Circle fence, Khan connected on a slicing elbow that sent Raju crashing to the mat. A torrent of ground strikes then ended matters abruptly in the first round.

Multiple-time Indonesian national wrestling champion Eko Roni Saputra put forth a spectacular performance, dominating ONE Championship newcomer Murugan “Wolverine” Silvarajoo of Malaysia to earn a first-round finish. At the sound of the opening bell, Saputra quickly chased Silvarajoo across the Circle. The Indonesian unloaded a series of powerful boxing combinations against the fence, as Silvarajoo covered up. Taking the Malaysian down to the mat, Saputra smoothly advanced to the bout-ending submission, using his feet to tweak Silvarajoo’s shoulder in a highly-technical joint lock maneuver to force the tap shortly after.

In a strawweight mixed martial arts contest, China’s “Wolf of the Grasslands” Hexigetu scored a huge victory over Muay Thai legend and former ONE World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke of Thailand, showcasing his superior wrestling for three rounds. The two athletes exchanged blows constantly on the feet, with Dejdamrong stalking Hexigetu while the Chinese athlete picked his spots. The “Wolf of the Grasslands” would take his opponent down consistently in every round, which weighed heavily on the judges’ decision. In the end, Hexigetu did just enough to earn the split decision victory on the scorecards.

Kicking off the action at ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES, rising Indian flyweight star Roshan Mainam put together a solid all-around performance, blasting opponent Liu Peng Shuai of China with combinations on the feet before finishing him off in the second round. Mainam and Liu spent a few moments trading strikes at the center of the Circle in the first. But as soon as action hit the mat, Mainam immediately went to work, taking Liu’s back and then sinking in a rear-naked choke. With the choke in deep, the Chinese athlete had no choice but to tap out.

Official results for ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES

Kubra Commander debuts first official single “The Now”

Kubra Commander joins Lilystars Records’ impressive roster of music acts from the Philippines and beyond.

Prior to signing up with the indie record label, the Cebu-based psychedelic rock outfit has been making waves online since the release of their breakthrough track, “On Your Left,” which made it to CNN’s 8 New Local Releases for your Listening Pleasure and earned a glowing review from indie music website, Flying Lugaw.

To mark their debut on Lilystars Records, the band has finally released their latest single “The Now”—a brooding, post-punk number about “gaining a new perspective on things through experience, and having an inclination to share the experience with other people in hopes that they can gain something new in return.”

Kubra Commander

Propelled by Kubra Commander’s inherent brand of disaffected cool, “The Now” starts off strongly with glistening synths straight from the ‘80s pop playbook, and builds up into an anthemic chorus at a brisk pace. Music-wise, it sounds more indebted to the band’s post punk and new wave influences, as well as the escapist, modern indie rock anthems of music acts such as MGMT and Empire of The Sun.

“I believe the chiming synth riff was what nailed it for me, playing it over the chords and beat gave a danceable feel to the track which I really liked,” vocalist and guitarist Bobbi Olvido shares the details about the music arrangements. “Everything just followed through from that point. It’s the first song where in all the members we’re able to contribute in the recording process, and it was quite easy to have everyone be on the same page production-wise. I also wanted to try to play with the idea of singing all the verses first and having all the choruses after.”

“The Now” will be part of Kubra Commander’s upcoming new album, Rhythm Tourists to be released in 2021.

Dominic Chin releases his new song ‘License to Cry’

Dominic Chin

Finally the Singapore pop artist Dominic Chin has released his debut EP ‘License to Cry’, via indie label Umami Records. Documenting the early stages of self-discovery in Domini Chin’s life is containing a total of 7-track EP a diverse collection of songs that in his efforts to articulate his struggles and explore different sounds.

“It was always difficult for me to verbalise my feelings growing up because I didn’t ever want to give myself away and reveal my vulnerability to others,” the acclaimed singer-songwriter/producer said. “I feared that they would judge me or find me a burden, and so this album is in a way, me talking about what I didn’t want to talk about.”

The recording process eventually felt therapeutic for Chin, as it allowed him to confront some of the personal traumas in his life. He shares, “In the process of making the songs, we always made it a point to make the song not sound too much as what it would lyrically seem to be. For example, HERE is a midtempo and “springy” type of song, but it talks about me missing my late grandmother. SHY is a high energy EDM song, but it talks about my paranoia and insomnia.”

Confessional in terms of songwriting treatment, Dominic Chin’s latest EP, ‘License To Cry’ is the explanation that he finally can give to people. “This is why I am the way I am,” he admits. “I have many reasons for my tears, I have many stories of my past. This album is an extension of myself.”

Cry: Breaking Social Demands

The EP’s focus track, the previously unreleased CRY, is an R&B track with a bit of a late 90’s pop vibe, saying that it’s OK to cry, even as you’re told to “man up.”

“It’s about being yourself and breaking free of the fear and shame from having to conform to others’ silly expectations and rules,” Chin explains. “Growing up, I have always had poor confidence, and hated sports and the general rowdiness that boys would get up to. I would constantly be told to ‘suck it up’ and ‘don’t be a girl.’ The song is about how me, being male, faces society’s demands to behave and act a certain way, but in fact every man is different. I used the term ‘cry’ as a symbol in the song to represent all the unfair expectations that others place on us. We came into this world crying and yet somehow it has become ‘feminine’ to do so.”

With its gospel-inflected arrangements and incredible bigness, CRY marks a milestone for Dominic Chin as it tackles themes that aren’t usually discussed in mainstream pop music in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia– rejecting conformity, rising above society’s expectations, and empowering self-expression. It’s a powerful song to cap off a brilliant 7-track EP– a personal statement that no matter how vague and intimate, still manages to capture humanity at its finest.

Danny Kingad Has a Close Eye on Toivonen-McLaren Bout at ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES

Former ONE World Title challenger and second-ranked flyweight contender Danny “The King” Kingad of the Philippines will have his eyes glued to the television screen when ONE Championship returns tomorrow night.

Former Kingad foe, Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Australia is set to do battle against Finland’s Aleksi “The Giant” Toivonen at ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES. The event is scheduled tomorrow, 9 October, live from Singapore.

Similar to what the NBA has done in Orlando, FL for the 2020 NBA Playoffs, ONE Championship has put together a stringent set of protocols to ensure the health and safety of its athletes and staff in it’s own ‘Singapore bubble.’

This bout could ultimately shake up the rankings, and Kingad says he has a vested interest in what will transpire inside the ONE Circle.

“This will definitely be an exciting bout to watch. Both athletes are very good on the ground, and this may prove who has the better grappling game between the two. Who knows, maybe I will meet the winner down the line at some point. That’s why I’ll be watching this fight closely,” said Kingad.

Kingad faced McLaren in August of 2019, after the latter stepped in to replace the injured Kairat Akhmetov in the semifinal round of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix. “The King” eked out a close, split decision victory over the Australian, earning his spot across Demetrious Johnson in the finals. He eventually succumbed to Johnson by unanimous decision in a competitive contest.

Kingad recalls his experience fighting McLaren, and immediately knew just how much of a stud “Lightning” was on the ground.

“Back when I faced Reece, I knew instantly his skill on the ground. He is such a difficult matchup for anyone. I had to focus on my submission defense against a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. It was dangerous at every moment,” said Kingad.

“Reece is a very smart fighter. He knows how to take you down and submit you. His striking is somewhat of a weakness, but you can’t underestimate anybody in this game. Reece’s ground game is so good, his lack of striking hardly matters. Once he gets you down, he will work every second to finish.”

The fierce Team Lakay exponent is considered one of the best flyweights in the world, right behind reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes and 12-time former UFC flyweight champion Johnson.

Although Kingad has yet to face Toivonen, the Team Lakay stalwart believes he’s an interesting matchup for McLaren, and that this should be a closely contested bout.

If Toivonen can defeat McLaren, he could take the Australian’s spot on the official rankings at number five. On the other hand, a victory for McLaren could solidify his position, or move him further up the ladder.

“From what I can tell, Aleksi is also a great grappler. But training with the world champions at Evolve MMA, many of whom are boxing and Muay Thai world champions, Aleksi should have a better standup game,” said Kingad.

“This is going to be a close one. A lot is riding on this matchup. I can’t say for sure who’s going to win this one because it’s so close. But I’m leaning towards this fight going the distance. It’s just two skilled guys playing a game of high-level chess inside the Circle. It should be fun to watch.”

Parasouls drops debut single “Can We, Can We”

Parasouls

Parasouls, Indie pop trio gently captures the frustration of romantic yearning on their debut single “Can We, Can We”—released today via Lilystars Records and available now on all streaming and digital platforms worldwide.

A brisk but engaging alt-rock number that brings to mind the likes of The Cranberries and Frankie Cosmos, the band’s latest release is a tribute to a beloved sci-fi character from one of the longest running TV series in the world.

“This is a funny story: Can We, Can We is actually the first song I’ve ever written back when I was seventeen,” guitarist and vocalist Dani Dimaano says. “I wrote about one of my favorite TV shows, Doctor Who. This song, in particular, is an ode to Rose Tyler and The Doctor in the TARDIS.”

The song was originally recorded in acoustic form, and was written way back in high school by Dani and bassist Joshua Gaces. “We tweaked the rhythm a little bit so it would fit the band setting better,” Dani shares.“Also, fun fact: I really wanted to put in a dotted 8 delay somewhere in the song, so I spent so much time trying to learn that just to make sure it makes it to the record.”

The final version of “Can We Can We” is indicative of the band’s combined music influences, which touch on a more playful but deceptively simple arrangement and anthemic pacing. It sets the tone for their future releases, where the music is written and produced with the right mix of inherent rawness, melodic sheen, and pop sensibility.
