Mark Sangiao: Lito Adiwang is Fired Up and Ready to Go

Philippine martial arts pioneer Mark “The Machine” Sangiao is the man behind the famed Team Lakay of Baguio City, and responsible for a plethora of the country’s top mixed martial arts stars today. One of his most prized pupils, Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang, returns to action this Friday night following a close split decision loss to Japan’s Hiroba Minowa late last year.

Adiwang is scheduled to face another Japanese foe in Namiki Kawahara at ONE: UNBREAKABLE, which broadcasts live on Friday, 22 January at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

Sangiao shared his thoughts on the matchup and how Adiwang has prepared himself to resume his tremendous run through the ranks.

“Lito Adiwang versus Namiki Kawahara is going to be another exciting fight. That’s for sure. Lito is never in a boring fight. He always comes to win and he’s always explosive. We like this matchup,” said Sangiao.

“Both fighters have good skills, technique, and attitude. Anything can happen in a fight, so we have to be prepared for everything. That involves a lot of drilling and sparring in different scenarios, and of course, honing our techniques in all areas of martial arts. I will say this, Lito is absolutely ripped and ready for this fight. He’s fired up and ready to go.”

Kawahara steps in as a late replacement for China’s Hexigetu. The Team Alpha Male proponent doesn’t have much experience, but is considered by Sangiao on all accounts to be another dangerous challenge for the “Thunder Kid.”

“We always consider every opponent to be the toughest, and there will be no difference with that here. We never say we are better or lesser than any athlete. There is no tougher or weaker. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. The key to victory is imposing your will, and playing to your strengths,” said Sangiao.

“Namiki has a good training background. His skill set is impressive. But we are not at all threatened. We are not worried and we are all out embracing this matchup. I think the two fighters will be fairly evenly matched. We don’t want to underestimate him. He’s going to come out with a lot of energy and motivation to win, and so will Lito. As always, it’s going to be a fun fight with Lito.”

Sangiao is fully confident his ward has enough to overcome his next challenge. And if he can get through this one, the Team Lakay head honcho wants to give fans what they want — an Adiwang-Minowa rematch to settle the score once and for all.

“I sat down in the gym with Lito and we went through the book. We went over everything about this fight and Lito’s career moving forward. He’s constantly evolving and getting better at a fast rate. I believe we have the table set for the Lito-Namiki match. Of course, everybody will say they’re going to win, given any contest, and we’re no exception. We’re gunning for the victory in any way,” said Sangiao.

“But mind you, fans in the Philippines in general are clamoring for a Lito Adiwang versus Hiroba Minowa rematch. That’s the fight fans want to see. We feel there is unfinished business there that they need to take care of.”

Taking place in Singapore on 22 January, ONE: UNBREAKABLE is ONE Championship’s first live event in 2021. The main event features a ONE Super Series showdown between ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Alaverdi “Babyface Killer” Ramazanov of Russia, who defends his world title against #2-ranked bantamweight kickboxing contender Capitan Petchyindee Academy of Thailand.

Lito Adiwang Looks to Finish Namiki Kawahara to Start the Year Right for Team Lakay

Filipino fighting phenom Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang is first up to bat for Team Lakay this year, as he climbs into the ONE Circle looking to make a huge statement. After a year full of setbacks, Adiwang hopes to set the stage for an incredible resurgence for the Baguio-based martial arts outfit.

Adiwang, formerly ranked #5 in the ONE Championship official athlete rankings at strawweight, dropped a close split decision to Japan’s Hiroba Minowa just a few months ago. In his next bout, “Thunder Kid” is out for redemption and wants it in the most satisfying way.

Adiwang is set to face Namiki Kawahara at ONE: UNBREAKABLE, live on Friday, 22 January at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

“Namiki is a good, well-rounded fighter. I can’t underestimate him or say anything bad about him. I just need to be careful. He appears to be strong in all areas. However, I do see some holes in his game that I plan to expose. If I can impose my will and execute the game plan, I will be victorious,” said Adiwang.

“He’s faced some good, strong opponents in the past. But the big difference is that he has never faced a fighter like me. I’m better in all areas, including my submission game and my striking. It’s going to be a technical, high level fight.

“One mistake and I will finish him. I will make his first mistake, his last,” Adiwang added.

Prior to the loss to Minowa, Adiwang was riding a seven-bout winning streak, and was one of the hottest fighters in ONE Championship. He earned his way to the main roster via ONE Warrior Series, joining the web series reality show in 2018. Under the watchful eye of mixed martial arts legend Rich Franklin, Adiwang flourished into an explosive contender.

According to Adiwang, the loss to Minowa was a much needed learning experience, and he plans to apply the lessons he learned in his future fights.

“I made a lot of mistakes in that fight. I just wasn’t focused and sharp. A lot of things were happening in my life. For this next one, I’m going in there with clear focus. When I enter the Circle, it’s time to throw down. That fight taught me a lot. I learned from it and I will move forward a better fighter,” said Adiwang.

“I’ve worked hard on my game over the last few weeks. It was a quick turnaround for me after the holiday break. I’m coming back better than ever before. I think now I’m much more experienced in the fight game. Experience is always a huge advantage.”

Unfortunately for Adiwang, Minowa took over his #5 spot in the rankings. But the Filipino firebrand isn’t all too concerned. He’s looking to finish Namiki Kawahara and make a case for more massive fights down the road that could boost him to even loftier peaks.

“I congratulate Hiroba Minowa on taking the spot from me in the rankings. For me, however, it’s not too big of a loss. Relinquishing my #5 ranking is not something that I will dwell on. My goal is to be #1, and to be champion. Other rankings don’t matter,” said Adiwang.

“Right now my aim is to just get back in there, keep facing the top opponents, and keep winning. Namiki Kawahara is a strong contender and I think it’s going to be a good fight. If I can beat him soundly, then maybe it can make a case for another big fight this year.”

ONE: UNBREAKABLE is ONE Championship’s first live event in 2021.

‘Trick of the Light’-Produced by Josh Pyke the new single of Filipino-Australian artist Bryan Estepa

Bryan Estepa

In 2020, Bryan Estepa released two new songs, continuing on from the success of his exceptional 2019 album Sometimes I Just Don’t Know. The second of those singles, ‘Admit Now, Pay Later, received a video premiere onRolling Stone Australia, was featured on NME Australiaand had strong national radio airplay – including selection as one of the featured Singles of the Week on 2ser FM in Sydney. Now the Sydney-based Filipino songwriter reveals the second of his collaborative efforts with multi ARIA and APRA award-winning Australian songwriter Josh Pyke.

Estepa has always had an undeniable ear for hooks. Combined with classic pop and rock arrangements, (like his heroes You Am I, The Beatles and Wilco) his songs always possess a timeless quality. He’s proved it over and over again across six acclaimed albums and live shows in Australia, Japan, the USA, UK, Spain, Sweden and the Philippines.

On ‘Trick of the Light’, Estepa combines heavenly melodies and a melancholic air on this irresistible slice of indie guitar pop, singing about acceptance, letting go and allowing yourself to feel whatever it is that comes out while you’re treading new waters. As always with his songwriting, there are layered poetic brushstrokes in the way Estepa blends and informs his songs with multiple meanings, as he explains. “I also like the idea that the presence of light does not necessarily signal happiness or life but can also mean that emotions and perception can be blurred by its appearance.”

Working with Pyke, Estepa was impressed with the producer’s instinct and ability to enhance the inherent strengths of Estepa’s songs. “It’s exciting watching Josh work! You sense that his creative light is always on and he needs to get his ideas out quickly before it starts to flicker. He takes on what I think the song’s direction might be but adds a couple of detours that are normally right on the money.”

Pyke is quick to reciprocate the praise. “Bryan’s a great writer and collaborator. He’s got a classic pop sensibility but is really open to feedback and experimentation which made my job as producer really fun and free.”

Sonically, there’s a beautiful weightlessness to the production and instrumentation that gracefully carries the song. Guitars sparkle and lightly jangle amid some sublime piano, backing vocals and percussive elements that add unique detailing to the melodic richness of the track.

Bryan Estepa’s ‘Trick of the Light’ is now available on all streaming and digital platforms worldwide via Lilystars Records.

Rescheduled of Music Lane Okinawa, Due to Rising COVID-19 Cases

Following the recent declaration of State of Emergency for the central area in Tokyo, Japan, the Music Lane Festival Okinawa 2021 (Music Lane Okinawa) and Trans Asia Music Meeting 2021 has been rescheduled to February 20 and 21, 2021.

According to a statement released by organizers, the decision to postpone the festival follows the recent rising cases of the COVID-19 in different parts of Japan. “Although Okinawa is not included in the State of Emergency, there are many artists and audiences participating from Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. In addition, the spread of infection in Okinawa Prefecture is becoming more prominent again… We felt that pushing the festival to be held in these circumstances could cause inconvenience and trouble to the participating artists, audiences, and all the staff members.”

Philippine lineup (photo by MC Galang)

The announcement was made formally last week to the Japanese audience. Originally slated for January 16-17, the Music Lane Okinawa was set to be the debut edition of the multinational music showcase festival that will feature a hybrid format, combining live performances from Japanese artists and pre-recorded live sets from participating international artists from other parts of Asia, including KRNA, She’s Only Sixteen, and syd hartha from the Philippines who will be joining legendary Japanese acts Shonen Knife and Sunny Day Service from Japan.

“We should not lose the opportunities for the artists in Okinawa/Japan and Asian countries to be introduced internationally, and we strongly believe that we must continue the music and the entertainment,” the statement continues.

The festival organizers assure that the festival will proceed as planned in the new schedule dates. In addition to the previously announced participating artists, the full lineup now consists of 75 music acts from Asia, (40 domestic and 35 international). The new additions to the lineup include Japanese acts, Hashiken, Tonchi Pickles, Chiemi Jones, Saki Kowan (Shocking Momoiro), 8bit, Milk&Cookie, onoway, Ruki Sato, THE QUESTIONS, VERONICA VERONICO,  Kokoro to Kotoba, Hitomi Shimabukuro, the you, and omni sight.

Lito Adiwang Fights in Honor of Late Mother, Determined to Bounce Back in 2021

Team Lakay upstart Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang had a rough start to the year, as the 27-year-old from Baguio City, Philippines recently lost his mother Leticia, who has suffered multiple strokes since 2016. She passed away on 30 December, just before a tumultuous year ended for Adiwang.

“There is nothing a mother wants more than to see her child happy and successful. I know my mother loved me so much, and she just really didn’t want me to get hurt, which is why she didn’t fully accept me being a fighter with her whole heart,” said Adiwang.

“But I chose this career, and I believe she was happy to see me succeed in what I love to do. I know in my heart she is proud of me, and I will continue to live my life in her honor.”

Members of Team Lakay rushed to Adiwang’s aid, to show their support. The team, along with head coach Mark Sangiao, convened in the first few days of 2021, to attend the funeral service. After his mother was laid to rest, Adiwang expressed his intent to turn the year around.

“My teammates have always been there for me. They’ve supported me through the hardest times. They are like family to me. I am very lucky to have a good support system,” said Adiwang.

“Nothing has changed in my mindset. The goal remains the same for me. I’m climbing to the top. If anything, I just got more motivated and driven. I want to prove myself in this next fight, and to do that, I have to be at my best.”

Adiwang is scheduled to make his return to the ONE Circle at ONE: UNBREAKABLE, scheduled for Friday, 22 January in Singapore. It’s his first fight back since losing a close split decision to Japan’s Hiroba Minowa in November.

Adiwang maintains that the experiences he’s gone through in the past few months have only made him stronger.

“I am more motivated now than ever to achieve my goals, and apply the lessons I learned in 2020, especially. I know the pressure is on, and I can feel the pressure. I know I have to prove myself to the world again, to earn the people’s trust. I’m working on coming back stronger than ever,” said Adiwang.

“I think everything happens for a reason. My setbacks today will be what makes me a better fighter for tomorrow. All the hard work I’m putting in will pay off in God’s perfect time. I just want to thank everyone for their support in my darkest hour. The race has just begun for me, but I promise to finish strong.”
