BPI SEAL assists micro and small businesses to achieve long-term success

BPI Foundation extends opportunities to micro and small enterprises through its new program, SEAL-SEGA.

BPI Foundation, the Bank of the Philippine Islands’ (BPI) social development arm, today announced the launch of BPI Small Enterprise Acceleration Lab (SEAL), a program for the development of local micro and small enterprises (MSEs), with its first track, Small Enterprise Growth Agenda (SEGA), in collaboration with Bayan Academy.

BPI SEAL-SEGA is a search for start-up companies that are ready to expand their enterprises. This programme aims to satisfy the needs of new firms by providing training, mentoring, and cash grants. The training program is designed to assist entrepreneurs in evaluating their products, services, operations, and marketing, as well as formulating their start-up firm development plan. I’m so fortunate to be able to learn from this webinar many things regarding these SMEs and how BPI is able to help them. It was indeed a great experience acquiring knowledge from them as they were able to share their knowledge with us.

Photo shows, clockwise from upper left: DTI Undersecretary of Regional Operations Group Blesila A. Lantayona, BPI Foundation Executive Director Owen Cammayo, Start Up Village President Carlo Calimon, and Bayan Academy President and Chairman Prof. Francisco “Jay” Bernardo.

“It’s no secret that the past two years have been extra tough for the entire business community, most especially for the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) which faced multiple challenges including the lack of funds to maintain their businesses after a series of lockdowns. To help address the pressing need for an intervention and spur growth to the MSE sector, we are excited to kick-off the pilot run of the BPI SEAL-SEGA,” said BPI Foundation Executive Director Owen Cammayo.

In 2020, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported that 99.51% of all businesses across the country belong to the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.  Micro enterprises account for 88.77%, while 10.25% are small enterprises.

According to a study conducted by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies in 2018, this sector continues to struggle in the value chain, primarily due to lack of access to finance, labor and technical and management know-how. SEAL-SEGA aims to help bridge the gaps.

“Startups proved to us that crisis can also be a strong driving force for creativity and innovation,” DTI Undersecretary of Regional Operations Group Blesila A. Lantayona noted. “If this new normal has taught us anything, it is harnessing the benefits of digital technologies and transformation that could be an opportunity to create sustainable and adaptable businesses.”

Bayan Academy President and Chairman Prof. Francisco “Jay” Bernardo said, “BPI SEAL SEGA is dedicated to helping startups sustain, develop and scale up their businesses. We are here to be part of the nation-building efforts that SMEs have been providing us.”

Fifty (50) MSEs will be chosen to attend the boot camps and present their plans to a panel of judges in a business pitch. The Top 1–10 will each earn a P100,000 cash prize, while the Top 11–20 will each receive Php50,000. The business challenge is available to 18-year-old and older start-up entrepreneurs with a total asset value of less than Php1 million. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2022.

Collaboration is essential for the development of long-term agricultural enterprises

KSK Farmers’ Market Day at SM City Sta. Rosa

Market access and limited market information are two main roadblocks to enhanced smallholder farmer income. Farmers in grassroot communities, according to studies, frequently lack access to viable, value-added marketplaces. Farmers struggle to shift their traditional subsistence farms into viable commercially focused production in the absence of crucial supporting activities such as infrastructure and service supply. Buyers, such as wholesalers, have a hard time getting the quantity and quality of produce they want for processing on a timely basis.

Because of this challenge, SM Foundation collaborated with various government agencies, and engaged various SM business units such as the SM Development Corp. (SMDC), SM Supermalls and SM Markets to ensure that local farmers under the Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program have venues where they can sell their produce amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

SMDC Weekend Market

SMFI, in partnership with other SM business units, exploited the power of collaboration to create farm-market connectivity – a major driver of rural poverty reduction.

Team social good

The Good Guys Market links KSK farmers to consumers while ensuring food security in SMDC communities.

The Good Guys Market is a weekend market set up in SMDC properties to connect small-scale farmers directly with consumers—condo residents. This initiative links around 26,000 small-scale farmers directly with consumers.

Together with SM Supermalls, SMFI launched the Green Lane initiative. Led by the wives of the KSK farmers, the social enterprise offers a wide variety of quality yet affordable indoor and landscape plants which cater to every enthusiast’s preference. In addition, the team also launched the KSK Farmers’ Market Day to provide farmers with market exposure in select SM Malls nationwide.

Meanwhile, SMFI also partnered with SM Markets in creating market for onion farmers. Through the partnership, SMFI was able to establish specialized onion pop-up booths creating a stable market for small scale onion farmers.

Millions of smallholder farmers are seeking ways to improve the productivity of their farms and to improve their market performance. Modern farming technologies, paired with market linkage, such as the SM KSK, plays a vital role in improving the livelihood of small-scale farmers and their families.

The SM Foundation’s Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program on sustainable agriculture is SMFI’s Social Good program that aims to improve the lives of Filipinos in grassroot communities through sustainable agriculture through technology transfer, product development, and farm-market linkage. To date, the initiative has trained over 28,500 farmers from over 900 cities and municipalities across the country.

The Hammingtons will travel to Manila for their first fanmeeting

This July is a great opportunity to spend with your family because South Korea’s cutest trio is visiting Manila. Sam, William, and Bentley will meet Filipino fans for the first time at The Hammingtons in Juanderland: Fanmeeting in Manila. The event will take place in the New Frontier Theater on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at 3 p.m.

The South Korean actors rose to prominence in 2016 after joining the cast of “The Return of Superman,” a reality program about celebrity fathers and their children. At first, the show featured only Sam and William (who is now five years old). Bentley (now four years old) arrived a year after his birth. The three rapidly became fan favorites, and they and the rest of the cast were awarded the renowned “Grand Prize” (also known as “Daesang”) at the 2018 KBS Entertainment Awards.

Earlier this year, the family decided to step down from the show to pursue other opportunities. One of which is “Wilbengers: Suspicious Camping Commotion,” an animated superhero film starring William and Bentley, together with their dad. The family also recently launched their new variety show titled “The Hammingtons’ Dream Closet” which airs on the ENA channel.

Outside of mainstream media, the boys are busy with their very own Youtube channel, “THE WILLBEN SHOW,” which has now amassed more than 350,000 subscribers.

Despite their packed schedule, The Hammingtons are excited to come to Manila.

“This is an amazing opportunity and we are so looking forward to meeting our fans. The last few years have been really difficult due to restrictions but finally being able to have the chance to meet some of our international fans is so exciting,” shared Sam Hammington, the family patriarch.

Sam is a New Zealander-Australian comedian who gained stardom in the South Korean reality television show “Real Men.” In 2013, he won the “Best Male Newcomer” award for his amazing performance on the show.

With only a few weeks until the fanmeet, Sam shared how the Hammingtons have begun preparation.

“We are not trying to overly prepare as we want to have an authentic experience while we are there. However, we have been trying to learn some Tagalog but it is not as easy as we thought it would be.”

Sam also shared that they’re eager to try some of the delicious food recommended by the fans; most notably, “chocolate rice” or champorado in Tagalog.

When asked how the kids reacted to the news, the 44-year-old star candidly answered, “To be honest, I have told them but I don’t think they quite comprehend where we are going. They are excited to go on an airplane to another country. But when we get there I am sure they will be excited.”

As a parting message to fans, Sam had this to say: “First and foremost, thank you for supporting us in everything we do. We appreciate you all, and without you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. This is our opportunity to thank you in person and hope to meet as many of our fans as possible.”

The Hammingtons’ fanmeeting in Manila is only one of the family’s numerous Asian destinations planned. Fans can expect to see more of the trio in person and on various media platforms across Southeast Asia now that WILD Group is in charge of their international efforts. Tickets will go on sale this Saturday through TicketNet. The fanmeet costs PHP2, 850 (Balcony) to PHP6, 500 (Balcony) (MVP). CDM Entertainment presents The Hammingtons in Juanderland: Fanmeeting in Manila.

McDonald’s opens its first green location restaurants with solar power

The newest solar-powered McDonald’s store in Arayat, Pampanga. These solar panels will become a significant source of electricity for the restaurant, providing employees and customers with clean and renewable energy.

McDonald’s Philippines, primarily owned and run by Chairman & Founder Dr. George T. Yang, is ready to deepen its Green & Good initiative, the company’s commitment to the environment, by developing innovative and sustainable restaurant solutions in more of its new outlets around the country.

McDonald’s has been testing and learning green solutions for sustainable restaurant practices at two Green & Good flagship restaurants in Manila and Mandaluyong since 2020. Previously, the business undertook a pilot test to investigate rooftop solar power systems in its Quezon Avenue, Quezon City, and Malasiqui, Pangasinan stores.

Today, McDonald’s is now set to roll out its first batch of new stores in Arayat, Pampanga and Ligao, Albay to be solar-powered. These stores are equipped with grid-tied/on-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the local utility grid and is a cost-effective option to supplement energy requirements. With potentially more than 70,000 KWH in estimated annual power generation, equivalent to approximately less 17,000 kg of CO2 emissions. With the solar rooftop being its significant source of electricity, McDonald’s will be able to power these stores with clean and renewable energy, enhancing its other sustainable solutions for its restaurants.

“McDonald’s Philippines is embarking on our journey towards becoming a better McDonald’s for the environment. We recognize the role we play and the impact we can make by committing to learn and scale initiatives that reduce waste and emissions”, shared McDonald’s Philippines President & CEO Kenneth S. Yang. “Our goal is for our stores to become sustainable developments that feature sustainable restaurant solutions that enable waste reduction, energy conservation, upcycling, and inclusive dining solutions.”

Similar to its existing branches in U.N. Del Pilar Manila and Shaw Wack-Wack Mandaluyong, the new stores will also feature solar lamp posts, photo and motion sensors, and high-performance glass film as part of its utility efficiency solutions, as well as eco-friendly air conditioning for less energy consumption. Green building solutions such as light gauge steel frames, ecopavers/panels and concrete fiber are incorporated as well. Meanwhile, sustainable packaging, proper waste disposal, and active mobility continue to be part of Green & Good stores’ upcycling and inclusive dining experiences.

This year, the company plans to increase its environmental commitment by constructing more Green & Good flagship stores across the country and converting more of its existing locations to solar power energy.

In honor of Independence Day, DITO Telecommunity launched GALING DITO, a major digital platform that aims to recognize and celebrate the innate talent of Filipinos by providing a platform for up-and-coming artists, content creators, and music lovers to rediscover and embrace their Filipino roots and showcase their passion and talent.

I was so fortunate to attend the press launch and delightful that I’m among the first ones to watch the digital platform of GALING DITO upon watching Youtube.

Discovering and Empowering Homegrown Talents

More than just a digital platform, GALING DITO is a movement that emboldens Filipino talents who might otherwise go unnoticed to take the center stage, and enables them to be a part of a digital community with a shared desire to get in touch with their local heritage and rediscover what it means to be truly Filipino.

With the new Baby Dove Soothing Moisture Wash, Baby Dove takes bath time to the next level in the metaverse

One of a mother’s most prized experiences is having a child. It’s as if the world comes to a halt for her, and all she can think about is the kid and his or her well-being—in a good manner, of course, because this is something she has been looking forward to for a long time. Babies, being the delicate beings that they are, necessitate careful affection, care, and attention. Everything that comes into contact with a newborn, from the food they consume to the clothes they wear, must pass through their mother’s careful scrutiny. Objects and products that come into contact with the baby’s skin are included.

Babies’ particularly sensitive skin makes them vulnerable to a variety of skin issues, which can be stressful and transform those sweet grins into whines. Dryness is a common problem that can cause irritation, especially when using standard bath soaps and liquids. Only gentle treatment is appropriate for fragile skin. Fortunately, Baby Dove is debuting its newest product line, Baby Dove Soothing Moisture, for all loving and cautious mums. This hypoallergenic hair-to-toe baby shampoo is formulated with warm milk and a peaceful chamomile smell to relieve your baby’s sensitive skin caused by dryness.

Moreover, Baby Dove Soothing Moisture has no dyes, no parabens, and no phthalates. Dermatologist- and pediatrician-tested, it is so mild and gentle that it can be used even on newborns! Your worries will surely be soothed and so will your baby.

To highlight the essence (and fun!) of bathing babies with the utmost care, Baby Dove Real Moms Village is bringing a new feature: the Baby Bath Time activity. In this virtual, gamified, immersive experience, moms’ baby bathing skills will be put to the test.

From the preparation pre-bath to the actual bathing, up to the post-bath pampering and then swaddling, moms will go through a step-by-step baby bath time process. Not only is the activity informative and entertaining—it’s rewarding as well, with in-game prizes redeemable for real-life perks waiting for moms at the end of the game.

A virtual hub within U-COINVille by Unilever Philippines, Baby Dove Real Moms Village is the perfect place to virtually get together with other moms, play fun games, learn more about Baby Dove and childcare, and earn prizes—vouchers and U-COINs—that you can exchange for real-world perks such as food and drink, load, groceries, and so many more!

On June 17, the Baby Bath Time immersive brand experience will debut at the Baby Dove Real Moms Village. To play, simply follow these instructions:

Cluck Sarap: The Town’s New Roast

Cluck Sarap, a new chicken business in Barangay Banaba, San Mateo, Rizal, opened a few weeks ago. The business sells one of the most delicious and juiciest roasted chickens on the market today. Iloilo is where Cluck Sarap began. Its first store opened four years ago in Villa Arevalo, Iloilo City. It all began with a vision of providing Filipinos with freshly cooked, flavorful, and affordable cuisine. The concept originates from a family-owned broiler-growing enterprise. As one of the largest poultry producers in the Visayas, the firm behind Cluck Sarap decided that offering ready-to-eat items made largely from their own-grown birds would better serve their customers.

Since then, Cluck Sarap has expanded to serve most of the municipalities in Iloilo. Currently, it’s one of the fastest growing chicken rotisserie chains in the region. It also has opened branches in other provinces such as Antique, Capiz, Aklan, Negros Occidental, Leyte and Cebu.  Most recently, it opened its first store in Luzon, the San Mateo, Rizal branch. To date, Cluck Sarap has grown to a total of 40 branches.

Cluck Sarap is known for its perfectly roasted chicken.  Their classsic roasted chicken is made with quality fresh chicken and natural herbs and spices.  Fresh dressed chickens are marinated before roasting in an oven rotiserrie, where the juiciness of the chicken is preserved. The ideal blend of Cluck’s unique marinate, coupled with natural herbs such as rosemary and lemon grass, yields an aromatic and tasty roasted chicken treat that every family will love.  Truly, Cluck Sarap’s Roasted Chicken is worth the price.  As most Ilonggos would say, “Sulit Gid!” #NamitNaPraktipalPa

Cluck outlets are expected to open in Antique, Guimaras, and Cebu this year. Visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/clucksarap.ph/. and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/clucksarap/
