GAZOO Racing (GR) GT Cup Asia 2023: New Asia champion Andika Rama’s daring tactics pay off

On September 24, 2023, GAZOO Racing (GR) GT Cup Asia 2023 was split into three thrilling events. For the chance to win the regional championship and a seat in the Global Finals, 15 local qualifiers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand competed in front of an audience of e-motorsports fans.

All regional finalists in the “Gran Turismo 7” competition for the PlayStation® this year competed in a total of three races, which marked a change in the race format from previous years. A 5-minute time attack served as a qualifying round to set the starting grid for the GT Supra Gr.4 cars in the first race, which was held on Mount Panorama. There was then a 15-minute race. The grid positions from Race 1 were swapped for the second race, which was run over a 25-minute race period on the Tokyo Expressway – East Clockwise track with GR Corolla automobiles. The third and final race featured GR010 Hybrid Hypercars and was held on the storied Spa Francorchamps racetrack. It started with a 5-minute time attack qualifying round and ended with a 35-minute race in variable conditions. The top five positions in qualifying rounds, bonus points for the fastest laps in each of the three races, and the cumulative points earned by finishing positions in all three races were used to determine the championship. The two finalists with the best scores at the conclusion of the competition will advance to the Global Finals, which will take place in Barcelona, Spain, in November.

Indonesia’s Andika Rama came out tops with a total of 65 points throughout the competition. Slow and steady won Rama the race, with the seasoned racer clocking 4th and 5th places in Race 1 and 2 before boldly claiming pole position in Race 3 by maximizing his time on track against increasingly bad weather. The Philippines’ Luis Moreno similarly bided his time, securing 6th and 4th place in earlier races before scorching to pole position in Race 3’s qualifying round, and maintaining his podium spot in the race to come out overall second in the championship with 52 points. Singapore’s Fadtris Isa and Malaysia’s Dhanesh Wigneswaran also performed remarkably, although several misjudgments in weather and pitting put them further down on the championship table.

“I knew that my pace in the final race was not as good as Luis and Dhanesh, so even though it started to rain, the wetness on track was low, I gambled on another two laps with hard tires while everyone went to pit. I tried to manage my pace after pitting, and it paid off,” Rama recounted elatedly. “I’m thankful to my family, friends, and fans who are here watching me live or online at home, and of course grateful to Toyota Indonesia for supporting us all the way. I look forward to racing with Luis at the Global Finals against our Italian and Japanese peers.”

Aside from the revised race format keeping things fresh for spectators, the fourth season of the GR GT Cup Asia in 2023 continues to underscore Toyota’s commitment in making e-motorsports accessible across generations, by enabling racing enthusiasts from around the region to experience the thrill and joy of competitive racing. Fans and participants were also treated to a visual feast of fascinating livery designs inspired by each participating country’s national colors.

“We are thrilled to see strong, continued support for the fourth edition of the GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia. All racers displayed exceptional skills that were spectacularly demonstrated, even across the various racing conditions. We hope that GR Asia brought a thrilling evening of entertainment to E-motorsports fans around the region, particularly with our all-new race format and colorful livery designs displayed throughout the competition,” said Jaja Ishibashi, General Manager at Toyota Motor Asia Pacific. “My heartiest congratulations to all racers for a putting up a wonderful race today, and all the best to Andika Rama and Luis Moreno for the upcoming Global Finals.”

Andika Rama and Luis Moreno will represent Asia and race against some of the world’s best e-Motorsport racers in the TGR GT Global Finals slated for November.

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) shares their pride as it congratulate Luis Moreno and the rest of Team Philippines who all worked hard in the GT Cup Asia Finals 2023.

“It is with great pride and joy that we congratulate Luis Moreno for his breathtaking second place finish at the TGR GT Cup Asia, earning for the Philippines one of the two Asian spots in the GR GT Cup Global Finals,” said Danny Cruz, TMP First Vice President for Vehicle Sales Operations. “This is truly an unforgettable milestone for the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Philippines family that have always championed Filipinos’ world-class skills and passion for e-motorsports.”

“Luis, along with his Toyota Philippines teammates Russel Reyes and Matthew Ang, have been great examples of our amazing local sim-racing talent. We look forward to seeing them achieve greater things in the future, especially Luis who has our full support as he carries our flag in the world finals in Barcelona this November,” Cruz added.

GR GT Cup Asia 2023 – Highlights of the Regional Finals

Beginning the competition at sunrise on Australia’s Mount Panorama, a tight 5-minute qualifying round saw this year’s youngest racer, Singapore’s Fadtris Isa at 19 years old, secure pole position for the race, with Malaysians Taj Aiman and Dhanesh Wigneswaran locking second and third position respectively, and Indonesians Benaya Theo and GR GT Cup veteran Andika Rama in fourth and fifth position respectively.

In the 7-lap race, Benaya Theo suffered technical issues, putting him out for much of the race, while Aiman quickly shot past Isa to hold a strong lead for the first half of the race. After pitting for a switch of tires from soft to medium however, Isa chased down Aiman to snatch the lead back in lap 6, spectacularly winning the first race with a 0.6 second lead ahead of Aiman, and Wigneswaran shortly behind in third place. Aiman and Wigneswaran each served three-second penalties, giving the podium finish for Race 1 to Fadtris Isa (Singapore), Andika Rama (Indonesia), and Ethan Yoh (Singapore).

Moving on to the second race, held on Tokyo Expressway, a grueling and enthralling 11 lap battle went underway – with Benaya Theo looking to put behind his disappointment from the first event. Reverse starting grid placed him in prime spot – pole position – a racer’s dream. Cue to the main event, the smooth and flowing nature of the street circuit saw numerous battles, with racers constantly trading positions through the track’s tight and undulating turns. Matthew Ang from the Philippines saw his championship hopes dashed as he crashed into the barriers midway through the race, leaving him dead last. Meanwhile, Singapore’s Zaim Rasyad found himself in clear air up at the front. Next up was the pit window, where huge changes in tire and race strategies came into play, bringing Theo to the fore. By constantly drafting alongside Malaysia’s Chong Kai Chang and Thailand’s Thanaphat Pungphat, Theo came home in first place, marginally pipping Pungphat and Chong to the line, in P2 and P3 respectively.

The competition concluded at the iconic Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. Drivers equipped with GR010 Hybrid Hypercars made their preparations for the 5-minute qualifying round. The Philippines’ Luis Moreno lit up the timing screens on his way to pole position with the fastest time, closely followed by Wigneswaran, Theo, Isa, and Rama – a huge indicator of the competition standards one can expect in the upper echelons of regional motorsports.

The action ensued in the final race, as nine of fifteen racers racked up time penalties, eager to pip ahead of one another. Aiman – runner up in the first event – suffered technical issues that unfortunately ended his race early. Back at the front, Moreno maintained a comfortable lead for the first few laps. However, complications showed up on lap 5. The previously sunny weather had very quickly turned overcast, with racers furiously watching the weather radar for spots of precipitation. What started out as a light drizzle soon turned into a monsoon-like downpour, soaking the track and limiting visibility. Tire choices soon became crucial, as then-championship leader, Isa, made the ultimately premature switch to intermediate tires. Rasyad and Theo followed suit, and while others chose to hop onto medium tires, banking on a passing shower, the rain only got heavier. Rama, holding steady amidst a mad rush to the pits for tires, stayed out on the hard compound, timing the pits to perfection. He exited his pitstop on lap 8 and came home cool and composed to win the final race. Coming in second, Wigneswaran put in a valiant effort, closing the gap from seven to less than two seconds, followed closely with third place Moreno pulling up five seconds behind.

The top three racers (based on total individual points gained) and top three country teams (based on total points won per country) each received prizes. With a total score of 65 points, Andika Rama (Indonesia) received 6,000 USD; Luis Moreno (Philippines) got 3,000 USD; and Fadtris Isa (Singapore) earned 1,500 USD. In the team competition, Team Indonesia won the grand prize of 6,000 USD with an astounding total of 122 points, Team Malaysia came in second with 3,000 USD and a total of 105 points, and Team Singapore took home the grand prize of 1,500 USD with 98 points.

Toyota Motor Philippines hosts the GAZOO Racing Festival to honor fans’ love of automobiles

Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda visited the Philippines
to showcase his excellent racing skills alongside other international and local pro racers

The two-day pulse-pounding TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Festival (TGR Festival) at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila had racing enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies yelling, “I love cars!.”

This motorsports event, which Toyota Motor Philippines has named its “greatest gathering to celebrate all things GAZOO Racing,” is a gift to consumers and supporters who have continuously expressed their love and support for the brand over the years as part of the mobility company’s 35th anniversary celebration. More than 6,000 people attended the TGR Festival in person, while up to 2.6 million people watched it live online.

Meet Akio “Morizo” Toyoda, GAZOO Racing’s Maestro

At the #TGR Festival, Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation (better known as the racing alias Morizo), displayed his driving and drifting expertise while operating a variety of Toyota race cars.

To kick things off, Morizo wowed the crowd with his mastery of the Toyota GR Yaris WRC rally car, where he entertained the crowd with donut maneuvers. Morizo also joined the Gymkhana challenge where he drove a Toyota GR 86 which allowed the audience to witness his expertise with a GR performance car that’s available for local customers. He moved through a challenging course showing off the finesse of a seasoned racer. Morizo also took lucky passengers for adrenaline-pumping rides, giving them a taste of what it’s like to experience the track from the perspective of a racing master.

“I developed a car because I wanted to see the smiles of the people. You ask people and you give them what they want.” Morizo believes that the best way to develop Toyota cars is by doing it on the road– driving and drifting these cars. “It’s because of the smiles and the cheers that is why I’m here,” he added.

Legends on and off the track

Another highlight of the event were the performances of Japanese champion racers from the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team Norihiko Katsuta and Masahiro Sasaki who were both present for the course of the two-day TGR Festival 2023. They brought along their legendary race cars Toyota WRC Yaris and Red Bull GR Corolla which conquered the rally courses of global racing events.

The transformation of the GR Yaris from the Toyota WRC Yaris led by Morizo was a remarkable feat. The Red Bull GR Corolla, on the other hand, also has a memorable page in history being remembered as the car that powered Calle Rovampella to victory in the Formula Drift Japan competition.

Of course, Toyota GAZOO racing would not be complete without the participation of the country’s home-grown Filipino star racers! Local racing stars Alex Perez, Luis Gono, Marlon Stockinger, and celebrity-racer Ryan Agoncillo participated in the event with TGR performance cars such as the GR Supra, GR Yaris, and GR 86. Japanese and Filipino drivers joined together as well in Gymkhana Driving Challenge with Marlon Stockinger being declared as Day 1’s overall winner.

“It’s loud, it’s crazy, a lot of tire burning, the smells– you just feel like you’re at the race track, even if we’re here at Quirino Grandstand,” Stockinger said.

Local racers owned the track too and ultimately showcased a clash of skills for one of the most-awaited highlights of the event – Gymkhana Time Attack and Drifting Competition. The Gymkhana Time Attack tested the competitors’ agility and precision where they navigated a maze of cones and figure eights with finesse. After a fierce battle, the following winners emerged: For Day 1, the winners of the Gymkhana time attack were: Angelo Magtoto – 1st place, Jason Chuang – 2nd place, and Christopher Co – 3rd place. For Day 2, John Erik Barrera was 1st place, Mickey Carbonell – 2nd place and Matt Frederic See – 3rd place for the first batch. Second batch was Andre Tan – 1st place, Russel Cabrera – 2nd place and Makol Pasumbal – 3rd place.

In the Drifting Competition, local racers had spectators on the edge of their seats as they unleashed their horsepower and slides. Ultimately, the following took the trophies in the Drifting Competition for Day 1: Hans Jimenez – 1st place, Paolo Agregado – 2nd place, and Bryan Revilla – 3rd place. Winners may have left tire marks on the battleground, but will for sure make an unforgettable impact on the crowd.

Non-stop thrills with live performances The fun and excitement didn’t stop with the exhibitions and racing competitions because there was tons of GR memorabilia all across the festival grounds, including hats, shirts, jackets, and other trinkets! For those who wished to experience what it would be like to stand at a podium finish, photo booths were also available.

The two-day TGR Festival 2023 included an incredible schedule of live performers, so there was never a dull moment! The festival grounds were rocked by the top-notch performances of BGYO, Ely Buendia, Ben&Ben, Parokya ni Edgar, and Kamikazee from dawn until day with heart-pounding sound and pace.

Customers may expect exhilarating and heart-racing experiences as Toyota Motor Philippines begins its 35th year

In honor of its 35th anniversary, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) would like to express its gratitude to all of the people who have helped it become the market leader in the nation.

To enable consumers to feel the pleasure and joy of moving together, TMP developed special activities and promotions in keeping with the theme “Creating Happiness in Mobility.”

“We dedicate this celebration to the generations of Filipino Toyota customers who have embraced the Toyota brand and became Toyota’s brand ambassadors,” said TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto. “To thank our customers for this milestone and to give them a glimpse of our exciting future together, we are treating them to exciting and unforgettable activities this month to kickstart our 35th year.”

With customer experiences centered around its electrification push for carbon neutrality and its drive to keep making ever-better cars and unforgettable fan experiences through racing, TMP is elevating the joy of driving for its 35th anniversary celebration.

Leave No One Behind: Electrified Mobility for All

TMP is starting its August anniversary month strong by bringing in a new Toyota nameplate that will further expand its wide range of electrified vehicles. Positioned as its “Most Affordable Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) yet”, TMP promises to change the electrified game anew with the arrival of the All-New Toyota Yaris Cross HEV.

TMP is unveiling the All-New Yaris Cross and exhibiting its powerhouse lineup of electrified sedans, MPVs, and SUVs, at its “Go Electrified with Toyota” fair, making these electrified cars available for public test drive, customer inquiries, and reservations.

With a total of 35 units of electrified cars from Toyota and Lexus all in one place, this event is happening at the Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig from August 4 to 6. The August 4 opening program will also be livestreamed on Toyota’s official Facebook page.

“We believe in giving our customers the power of choice, that is why we advocate for a multiple pathway approach to achieving carbon neutrality in mobility,” said Okamoto. “Widespread adoption of electrified vehicles is one of those paths and we are glad to give the public accessible and practical electrified vehicle options.”

The “Go Electrified with Toyota” fair allows customers to familiarized and personally experience electrified vehicles especially HEVs that are appropriate with the current needs and conditions of the country. By giving its customers a wide range of choices and eliminating hurdles to shifting to electrified technology, TMP is enabling Filipinos to start contributing to global decarbonization for a more sustainable future.
