Project Empowering through Education will be introduced in Cebu

The ideation of a creative mobile classroom project in Cebu gave the empowerment of the out-of-school kids in the Philippines a boost. The “Mobile KART Project,” put forth by SEED4COM, received more support after it was named one of the Top Three winners in the “Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring” charitable campaign, which got underway last year. If the campaign is successful, there will be a chance to build other mobile classrooms that will assist more youth who are not in school in many other parts of Cebu.

The aim was noble: to assist Cebu’s youth, particularly from poor and marginalized families, and provide them with free access to education with diverse and free-of-charge training courses that will hopefully educate them even in the midst of a debilitating pandemic.

The project will be officially inaugurated and launched on October 2022 at several locations in Cebu City such as Lapu-Lapu City, Cordoba, and Olango Island, among others. It would become doubly significant since the launch will coincide with the holding of the annual Taiwan-Philippines Joint Economic Conference.

The innovative and creative Mobile KART is not just any mobile classroom. It comes equipped with solar panels, laptops, an LED TV display, audio system and even routers for mobile internet connectivity, and all are Taiwan Excellence Award-winning products.

The Mobile KART Project offers courses such as “Transformative Educational Access for the Communities and Homes” and also “Technology Vocational Livelihood Skills Training.” These courses are meant to teach the poor youth in Cebu’s poverty-stricken areas with valuable life skills, particularly the benefits of reading. Hopefully, the skills will equip them with knowledge they can use to improve livelihood or pursue higher education when given the opportunity.

The “Mobile KART Project” is a mobile classroom that originated in Cebu and was part of several initiatives related to education by Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities or SEED4COM (https://www.seed4com.org/). The organization was established to help improve human conditions and empowering poverty-stricken areas, rural and last-mile communities in the Philippines.

Given the enormous number of entries, the “Mobile KART Project” winning at the “Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring” competition was undoubtedly a proud moment for SEED4COM as well as the entire nation, according to Dann Diez, Executive Director of SEED4COM.

The goal of “Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring,” an initiative sponsored by the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), was to improve society by giving everyone the chance to share ideas about charitable work and other altruistic endeavors connected to social development and environmental protection through the use of products.

16 Years of Volunteerism and Support for the Annual Brigada Eskwela by PHINMA

PHINMA Inc Director and Foundation President Mr. Roberto Laviña extended help and volunteered during the Brigada Eskwela activity in San Isidro National High School in Makati City.

PHINMA Corporation, a conglomerate with operations in education, building supplies, real estate development, and hospitality that is authentically Filipino, recently marked its 16th year of dedication and support to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) annual Brigada Eskwela. Before Brigada Eskwela was institutionalized in 2008, The PHINMA Group was encouraging its staff, scholars, and their families to take part in DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program. Volunteers from all around the organization’s network have participated in a variety of projects, including restoring classrooms, constructing walkways and sheds, improving gardens, and providing school supplies. In the last ten years, PHINMA has supported at least 10,907 public school pupils, 247 teachers, and planted at least 280 native trees.

Each of PHINMA’s strategic business units (SBUs) individually launched its own yearly Brigada Eskwela activities. For instance, the education division of the PHINMA Group, PHINMA Education Holdings Inc., has been organizing all of its charitable activities under its Helping Hands program, including Brigada Eskwela, tree planting, and typhoon assistance. As part of the conglomerate’s “1PHINMA” initiative, PHINMA Hero, the organization’s employee engagement program, coordinated this year’s group-wide initiatives.

Roberto M. Laviña, PHINMA Foundation’s President and Director of PHINMA Inc., credits the PHINMA employees’ strong spirit and culture of volunteerism as reason for the group’s 16-year commitment to and noteworthy achievements during the annual Brigada Eskwela. “Brigada Eskwela is a hands-on experiential event that gives everyone a chance to be part of the solution. I have joined Brigada Eskwela many times and everyone I have worked with in this volunteer activity have confirmed that they are extremely satisfied with the experience. Volunteers will certainly get their hands dirty, literally, when they join Brigada Eskwela. But that’s okay, because you know that through this activity you’re making lives better for students and their families,” added Laviña.

PHINMA’s participation in the annual Brigada Eskwela encourages employees along with their families to volunteer. PHINMA Property Holdings Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer and President bonded with his daughter Martina as they helped repaint the halls of San Isidro National High School in Makati City.

This year alone, over 800 volunteers from the PHINMA Group participated in the Brigada Eskwela. The school improvement initiative this year involves repairing and cleaning 40 public schools across the country. PHINMA also donated masks, gloves, alcohol, cleaning materials and school supplies in preparation for the resumption of face-to-face classes.

They say that it takes a village to raise a child. We are all here because we all believe that alone we can do so little, and together we can do so much. And with the theme ‘Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik-Aral,’ we are thankful that we have the PHINMA Group continuously supporting Brigada Eskwela. With our theme this year, we would like to highlight the country’s collective efforts from various partnership engagements in creating a conducive learning environment for the students, teachers, and non-teaching personnel,” said Dr. Medarlo De Leon, Principal of Dagupan City National High School, one of the Group’s Brigada Eskwela school beneficiaries this year.

PHINMA Property Holdings Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rafael Felix is joined by his daughter as they volunteer during the Brigada Eskwela activity in San Isidro National High School in Makati City.

We thank the employees, the volunteers, the scholars and their families, and the different communities who devoted their time wholeheartedly for our participation in the annual Brigada Eskwela. Peter Perfecto, PHINMA Corporation Vice President for Public Affairs and PHINMA Foundation Vice President, praised the volunteers across their different strategic business units. Their commitment to improving lives through our businesses and by collaborating with and working for the communities we serve is what drives the PHINMA family’s involvement. The same culture is what gave rise to “1PHINMA” and the generations of improvements it has brought about.

WWF and Hamilo Coast are partners in sustainable tourism

Hamilo Coast and WWF further push for environmental awareness by celebrating occasions that show respect for biodiversity such as the Coastal Clean Up.

The country’s most popular beach resort town in Nasugbu, Batangas, Hamilo Coast, may be the weekend retreat of the wealthy, but it is on course to become a successful example of eco-tourism techniques that are sustainable.

Hamilo Coast, a project of SM Prime’s Costa Del Hamilo, Inc. (CDHI), has 5,800 hectares of prime beachside development and thoughtfully mixes residential, resort, leisure, commercial, and institutional land uses throughout the vast estate. But beyond its expansive scope and breathtaking views, Hamilo Coast places sustainable tourism at the center of its philosophy and demonstrates how lovely beachfront homes can coexist with the natural world.

2022 marks Hamilo Coast’s 15th year of productive partnership with the conservation group World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF). Hamilo Coast and WWF have been working together on key areas for sustainability—coastal resource management, ridge-to-reef management, solid waste management, mangrove reforestation, the use of renewable energy sources, and environmental awareness.

Hamilo Coast embraces sustainable tourism at the core of its philosophy and shows how beautiful beachfront homes can harmonize with nature and the environment.

This long-standing collaboration with WWF signifies Hamilo Coast’s determination to pursue eco-tourism and sustainability while upholding international standards for leisure property development.

Ms. Imee G. Francisco, Vice President and Head of CDHI Projects and Operations, takes pride in the partnership’s objectives. “More than building and maintaining a beautiful community, we seek to create and sustain a world that future generations can enjoy. To help serve this end, CDHI continues to develop Hamilo Coast without compromising the quality of wildlife living around it.”

This year, Hamilo Coast and WWF will focus on addressing the major components on waste management, which include assessment of solid waste, water and wastewater management practices, formulation of environmental management plan, and the promotion of food shed farming systems. Apart from these, Hamilo Coast and WWF will continuously work on programs that will help conserve, protect, and nurture the environment.

Santelmo Cove was among those declared as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) regarded as a coastal zone where human activities are strictly regulated to ensure their long-term conservation.

For one, Hamilo Coast and WWF’s Ridge to Reef program declared three of Hamilo Coast’s 13 coves–Pico de Loro, Etayo, and Santelmo–as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). These are coastal zones where human activities are strictly regulated to ensure their long-term conservation. Declaring more MPAs would also mean expanding Hamilo Coast’s scope in safeguarding more marine ecosystem and resources.

Hamilo Coast also continues to implement a mangrove reforestation program in its 24-hectare mangrove belt—one of the largest in Nasugbu. Here, Hamilo has planted 50,000 propagules hand-in-hand with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines.

Mangroves are the first line of defense for coastal communities, stabilizing shorelines by averting erosion and providing natural barriers to storm surges, flooding, and hurricanes. As an effective carbon storage, mangroves absorb six times more carbon than mature tropical forests, making it all the more vital in slowing down the effects of climate change.

Finally, Hamilo Coast and WWF will further push for environmental awareness by celebrating occasions that show respect for biodiversity. One is the annually held Earth Hour, during which time people are urged to shut down electricity to make a substantial difference in energy consumption. Individuals, organizations, and establishments also come together on Coral Triangle Day to shed light on ocean conservation and the ways we can protect and preserve the world’s epicenter of marine biodiversity.

Likewise, the development boasts the largest volunteer effort for the ocean’s health, made possible with the International Coastal Cleanup, where people gather on the Pico and Santelmo beaches to collect trash and record information on the collected debris.

For all of these persistent efforts, WWF has given Hamilo Coast the Longest Sustainability Partner Award, honoring the development’s dedication to environmentally friendly travel and its beneficial effects on the Philippine travel and tourism sector. “CDHI is proud of how far we have come at Hamilo Coast with the aid of WWF,” says Francisco. This motivates us to put forth even greater effort in the hopes that our efforts will allow future generations to appreciate nature’s beauty in the same way that we do.

FIRST REAL ESTATE CONFAB IS HOSTED IN CEBU

On Thursday, August 25, 2022, the first-ever Real Estate Salespersons Congress will take place in Cebu City with over 700 participants, the majority of whom are PRC-registered salespersons from across the nation. The Accredited Real Estate Salespersons in the Philippines (ACRES Philippines), which is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will host the congress to bring together professionals in the real estate selling industry to formally introduce ACRES Philippines and its Vision and Mission, recognize its interim officers across the country, honor charter members, and raise awareness of and address current issues in real estate selling. The first and biggest association for accredited real estate salespeople in the nation is ACRES. It was established in 2021 to promote salespeople’s efforts to advance their knowledge, ethical standards, protection of their rights to free and fair practice, improvement of their well-being, and appropriate representation and inclusion on issues affecting their trade and success.

Founded in 2021, it supports the endeavors of salespersons in furthering their learnings, ethical standards, protection of their rights to free and fair practice, upliftment of their well-being, and due representation and inclusion on matters of their trade and prosperity. At present the association has already set up nationwide chapters with interim officers in Metro Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Camarines Sur, Cavite, Bicol, Sorsogon, Legaspi, Pampanga, Palawan, Tacloban, Ormoc, Bohol, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Kabankalan, Iloilo, Roxas, Aklan, Calbayog, Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Northern Cebu, Southern Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue, Catbalogan, Davao, General Santos, Caraga, Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, Surigao, Ozamis, Dipolog, Pagadian, Digos, Iligan and Gingoog.

These interim officers will take oath during the congress. Cebu was picked as the host for this year’s Congress to showcase the city’s progressive real estate industry whose vibrance could only be kept and achieved by proactive industry practitioners, including real estate salespersons. According to Anthony Gerard Leuterio, president of A Better Real Estate Philippines (ABREP), the advisory group of ACRES, the formation of ACRES came timely as the real estate sector experiences a rebound from the economic stresses brought about by Covid-19 pandemic.

He said unifying all the salespersons involved in real estate will further advance the country’s real estate sector and make it one of the strongest economic pillars amid the headwinds. “Since real estate is a selling business, we also need to get the salespersons onboard and actively involved them in advancing the sector alongside the brokers,” he said. Leuterio stressed that since real estate salespersons are significant contributors in the continued expansion of the sector, they must be well represented. “These practitioners need to have a voice too, especially when policies and laws are crafted. We need to include them so we could really a ‘Better Real Estate’,” he said.

Real estate salespersons comprise the biggest number of professionals in the real estate service. Moreover, ACRES seeks to work harmoniously and collaboratively with the professionals in the real estate service, regulatory agencies, real estate organizations, property companies, policy makers and advocacy groups.

In order to take part in campaigns against unauthorized developers and salespeople, Leuterio stated that the association is eager to collaborate with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD). The group also hopes to encourage accreditation for all salespeople engaged in real estate selling operations by collaborating with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

National Heroes Day riders retrace the path to freedom

In a pleasant ride for a good cause called “Ride for Valor,” cyclists from Bataan, Pampanga, Tarlac, and surrounding provinces pedaled along the route traveled by the nation’s heroes. The non-competitive 160-kilometer “Race for Valor” cycling ride earned money to preserve the historical markers honoring the sacrifices of our soldiers. The money will be given to the Filipino-American Memorial Endowment (FAME), a nonprofit group that looks for the mile markers along the Bataan Death March from Mariveles, Bataan to Capas, Tarlac.

In the past, Bataan Death March markers had been destroyed, uprooted, and neglected due to drainage and other road projects. Ten (10) Death March historical markers in Mariveles, and four (4) in Limay, Bataan have to be relocated soon due to road widening and other repairs.

The Death March markers serve as a reminder of the route taken by Filipino soldiers who defended the country against Japanese forces during World War II some 80 years ago. About 10,000 brave soldiers died along the route; many of the bodies were never identified or recovered.

The ride is part of the 30th anniversary of the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB). PVB is a commercial bank owned by World War II veterans and their families. As part of its charter, PVB allocates 20% of its annual net income for the benefit of its shareholders.

During World War II, the Japanese military forced about 80,000 Filipino and American soldiers and prisoners of war to march 69 miles from Bataan to Tarlac; only about 54,000 made it to the camp, and about 20,000 perished from diseases, starvation, dehydration, and the brutality of their Japanese captors in addition to starvation.

Leading educators are invited to participate in a virtual conversation on school reopening in the new normal by the Rotary Club of Greenfield District

Peralta, DRPH, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of University of Santo Tomas Elena E. Pernia, PhD, Vice-President of Public Affairs, University of the Philippines

Since the beginning of the pandemic, all schools in the nation have been closed. The nation’s education system is grappling with a significant dilemma as schools get ready to return soon: how to manage the transition and reopen safely amid risk brought on by the ongoing pandemic.

Top education leaders are invited to participate in a virtual discussion hosted by the Rotary Club of Greenfield District as part of its kick-off activity to discuss how they managed their schools during the height of the pandemic and how they plan to transition from online learning to a “new normal” once the schools reopen in August.

The Rotary Club of Greenfield District adapted AHEAD Education’s Leadership Strategies for School Managers (LESSM) as one of its core services hosted the virtual discussion entitled “Educators in Action: Adapting to the new culture of education.”

Br. steered the online conversation. De La Salle University President Bernard S. Oca, FSC; University of the Philippines Vice-President for Public Affairs Dr. Elena E. Pernia; University of Santo Tomas Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta; University of Asia and the Pacific President Dr. Winston Conrad Padojinog; and Ateneo de Manila University Dean Raphael A. Guerrero, Ph.D. Ms. Rossana Llenado, President and Founder of AHEAD Education and President of the Rotary Club of Greenfield District, conducted the debate.

“The entire education sector faced an unprecedented major crisis. With COVID-19 making it downright dangerous for students to go to school at the height of the pandemic now transitioning from online education back to face-to-face classes is both imminent and imperative,” said Rossana Llenado.
