With the Tunay na Bayani Awards, Mekeni makes 2021 a year of heroes

Tunay na Bayani Awardees 2021

The Philippines is a hero-filled country. Throughout history, men and women have stood out for justice and freedom. Our modern-day heroes’ heroic blood keeps flowing in the veins of those who have aided their communities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mekeni Food Corporation created the Tunay na Bayani Awards in the beginning of 2021 after learning that there are many modern-day heroes that deserve to be recognized. Mekeni’s Bayani line, as well as the resilience, talent, and abilities of Pinoy micropreneurs, inspired the award.

Here are stories of heroism that made 2021 a year of heroes with the Tunay na Bayani Awards, from delivering free supplies to people to helping their families get through difficult times.

A Tunay na Bayani to the homeless, underprivileged

Marko Bustarde thought that apart from being a professional hairstylist, he has no other purpose or calling. But as soon as he started giving out free haircuts on what he calls his “Mission Day,” Marko realized that he can share kindness and love especially to those who need it most.

Aside from Marko, another Tunay na Bayani in their community is Chel Calaquian. A full-time banker, Chel goes around communities every weekend to share free food to those she meets in the streets.

“It is not how much you give but how much love you put in giving. A simple act of kindness means a lot to people. It does not have to be big, expensive, or extravagant. As long as you put your heart in it and tama yung intention mo, this will go a long way,” Chel shared.

A Tunay na Bayani to the younger generation

Meanwhile, Erl Mahinay Jr.’s story of heroism transcends even the highest mountains. Erl has seen how difficult life is in far-flung areas in his province as he has been a volunteer teacher even before finishing his education degree. So when he had the chance to help the kids in the mountains, he grabbed this opportunity and that fueled his passion to help more of them.

Apart from teaching the children, Erl also started giving out essentials to them.

A Tunay na Bayani to their families

Heroes sometimes do not need to go out. Most of the time, they are at home and taking care of their families.

For Joshua Carte, making the greatest sacrifice for his family was his way to show his love for them. Taking care of his sick parents was the least he could do to repay them for all their sacrifices. Even at a young age, he was able to do so much for his family.

The Tunay na Bayani awardees are living proof that small acts of compassion and kindness can go a long way. Even if they have their own needs to fulfill, they will still choose to prioritize others.

“Every day, there is a reason for us to celebrate and honor ordinary people doing great things for their communities. Their dedication and passion for uplifting the lives of people around them are really astounding and downright inspiring. Tunay na Bayani Awards would not exist without these selfless people doing amazing things for their neighbors. So, to all the heroes everywhere, thank you for the work you do! This coming year, may you continue to multiply and motivate others to do good,” Mekeni President Pruds Garcia said.

Mekeni will endeavor to commemorate these true heroes who have been agents for change as long as Filipinos maintain the bayanihan spirit alive in their communities. Visit Mekeni’s official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mekeniph) to learn more about the Tunay na Bayani Awards and the awardees.

All throughout Pandemic, Smile Train Philippines strives to provide Forever Smiles

It Takes a Village — With the help of friends and advocates of Smile Train and his mother’s dedication to ensure he receives surgery at the soonest possible time, Baby Mao finally received free cleft surgery at Philippine Band of Mercy, a partner of Smile Train Philippines (photo on left from Cristalle Belo’s IG)

Every day, 540 babies are born with a cleft palate, a critical health problem that can lead to life-threatening problems such trouble eating, breathing, hearing, and communicating. Individuals born with a cleft palate and their families can receive full cleft care from Smile Train. Smile Train continued to provide free cleft surgery and care for individuals in need, including baby Mao, despite the hurdles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Novalyn, Mao’s mother, had initially given up hope. Mao was underweight and unable to have surgery during his first check-up at another institution. The pandemic broke out soon after, causing even more delays in seeking treatment. Novalyn was referred to Smile Train by Cristalle Belo, Tim Yap, and Javi Martinez after more than a year. Mao had surgical treatment his cleft lip in September 2021.

“This life changing procedure of baby Mao is truly such a blessing to their family, and we can’t thank Smile Train enough for making this dream a reality. Can’t wait to see the results after baby Mao has healed,” said Cristalle Belo on her Instagram post.

Baby Mao

In 2019, Cristalle Belo met baby Mao during one of her family-owned Belo Medical Group’s outreach activities. Baby Mao was not allowed to receive surgery then as he was not strong enough at the time.

Chef Xavier Btesh, who was there to support the outreach activities, also took an interest in Baby Mao’s case, helping to ensure he goes to his pediatric check-ups and gets his vitamins to be healthy enough for his eventual surgery through Smile Train.

(“For all the parents out there, do not lose hope, Smile Train will always be there to support us and for our children with cleft. However, as much as possible, as a parent, as a mother, one of our responsibilities is to take care of ourselves especially when we have a child with a cleft,” said Mommy Novalyn.)

“Through Smile Train’s sustainable model of partnering with local hospitals and empowering local medical professionals, we are able to provide cleft care throughout the year. This model has allowed us to continue to carefully provide safe, quality and timely surgeries throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Kimmy C. Flaviano, Smile Train Vice President, South East Asia.

During the epidemic, Smile Train provided approximately 3,000 telehealth sessions for speech therapy and nutrition counseling, in addition to cleft operations. Smile Train has also released the first-ever Filipino language mobile  speech app designed for those born with a cleft lip or palate to keep learning at home. Despite present hurdles, Smile Train is devoted to its vision of a world where everyone has access to adequate and thorough cleft care and may live a full and healthy life. Smile Train has financed over 65,000 cleft operations in the Philippines in just over 20 years.

Visit smiletrain.org for more details and to donate to Smile Train’s global projects. Visit smiletrain.ph, follow Smile Train Philippines on Instagram @SmileTrainPh, and like us on Facebook at @SmileTrainPhilippines to discover more about Smile Train’s local activities in the Philippines.

Halika at subukan ang Digital World

Subalit sabi nga ng isang superhero, “with great power comes great responsibility.”

Teachers are living vessels of knowledge as well as the dreams and aspirations of children whose voices fill teachers’ hearts and minds. As more than just a matter of fact, we recognize that lifelong learners require lifelong teachers, and that both are committed to advancing education for the benefit of all. REX Education and the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) collaborated to initiate the PEAC-REX Edukampyon Iskolar para sa Kinabukasan, a scholarship plan that seeks to champion, strengthen, and develop teacher education by inspiring the brightest students to pursue the teaching profession.

Addressing the Challenges Faced by the Education Sector

According to the 2018 OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, Filipino students ranked the lowest among 79 countries in mathematics, science, and reading, with over 80% of students not reaching the minimum level of proficiency in reading. In a 2019research conducted by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS), scores of Filipino students decreased by 61 points in mathematics and by 83 points in science from 2003 to 2019. The Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) also found that in 2019, at least 83% of Grade 5 students scored below reading and mathematics standards expected for end of primary schooling.

According to the World Bank Philippines Report 2021: “Improving teacher quality in schools will mean attracting and selecting the best candidates into the teaching profession. To strengthen teacher quality, [we] should begin from selecting the right people into the profession. Policies in teacher recruitment and hiring should be aimed at increasing the attractiveness of the career, such as incentivizing high achievers to pursue teacher training and eventually enter into the profession.”

Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan

The Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan scholarship program rings true to REX Education’s Edukampyon advocacy: to rally every Filipino to champion education so that every learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. As Edukampyons, we are duty-bound to uplift the Filipino learners today and in the future—and help make them whole. The time to act is now.

By encouraging the best and the brightest to pursue the teaching profession, we are investing in our learners and in the future of Philippine education. By being partners, we are working together to build and strengthen the path toward a brighter tomorrow for all of us, for our nation. By supporting the program, we are giving back to the teaching profession the highest honor and prestige it deserves.

“Teaching is a profession that has the power and influence to inspire the grooming of the greatest artists, doctors, and innovators. So, it is essential as Edukampyons to look into how we can advance and strengthen the quality of teachers and instructors… from basic education to the tertiary level. We seek for the best and the brightest to work with us, commit to the profession, and start creating a rippled effect as we enhance teachers’ quality today. This small act that we are doing in the present can have a great impact on all of our futures,” said Don Timothy Buhain, chief executive officer of REX Education during the launch of the program on October 5, 2021.

What’s Next?

REX Education and PEAC are here for you. Students can apply for the program through their respective schools; while schools can nominate their top students for the scholarship, to encourage good-standing students to pursue Teacher Education for their tertiary education.

REX Education and PEAC will also partner with teacher education centers of excellence (COEs) and centers of development (CODs) across the country to grant the scholarships, ensuring quality education and training for future teachers.

By school year 2022–2023, 50 of the best and brightest freshmen will be selected across four basic education specializations: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Those admitted to the program will not only enjoy living and technology-support allowances; they will also receive the best training from partner COEs and CODs across the country and bear the pride and responsibility to give back and advance the community.

PEAC, REX Education, Philippine Business of Education, ASEAN Teacher Education Network, the Department of Education, and the Commission on Higher Education all participated in a virtual conference to introduce Edukampyon Iskolar para sa Kinabukasan. It was a celebration of teachers around the country, as well as the debut of the project, in honor of World Teachers’ Month.

Those who were unable to attend the event can still view it on the REX Education Facebook page.
