‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon Continuum’ from Rex Education was honored at the UNODC Conference as a model school-community-family program for enhancing drug abuse prevention

Rex Education presented their “Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon (BPE) Continuum” for bolstering drug-abuse prevention at the recent United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Conference at Novotel Manila, Quezon City.

The UNODC Conference brought together organizations, decision-makers, and those who administer preventative programs for discussions on how to deal with the nation’s drug-related issues. UNODC urged people and organizations to contribute drug-abuse prevention strategies that are health-centered and focused on family intervention under the topic “Prevention Digest: Strengthening the prevention strategy and family-based initiatives in the Philippines”. The healthcare system, evidence-based initiatives, and Philippine family-centered intervention experiences were all on the table.

During the 3rd day of the event, REX was among the government and non-government organizations who shared their experiences with prevention programming, as well as the impact and influence of these initiatives.

Taking a whole school approach to reform initiatives

BPE officially launched during the January 2021 Annual Educators’ Congress, where 400 private and public schools expressed interest and intent in pilot implementing the framework.

In March 2021, pilot implementation for BPE began with 13 schools completing one implementation cycle. These schools were Marantha Christian Academy, St. Edward School, Canossa Academy Calamba, Ednas School, Cherished Moments School, Colegio de Santa Rita de San Carlos, Inc., Cabulay High School, San Andres Elementary School, Divisoria High School, Rosario National High School, Sagana National High School, Patul National High School, and Sinili Integrated School.

REX gave life to the portmanteau ‘Edukampyon’, a combination of the words edukasyon (education) and kampyon (champion) to mean champions of education. The BPE program is grounded in the Edukampyon advocacy: To engage duty-bearers and build their capacities for respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the right to quality education.

Pursuant to BEDP 2030, REX advocates a whole school approach that entails the collaboration of all members in a school community. The whole school approach recognizes that the informal curriculum is just as valuable as the formal one, highlighting the importance of providing learners with inclusive and safe environments beyond the classroom. This framework is meant to advance agendas on global education and reform initiatives such as health awareness, eradication of violence, and drug-abuse prevention.

The whole school approach also comes into play in promoting the six facets of the Filipino whole learner. REX has identified various indicators that should ensure a Filipino learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. Across these indicators, there is a common theme that encourages school culture and leadership to promote learners’ physical and mental health, implement policies relevant to civic participation, and equip students with the essential competencies for lifelong learning. Families and communities are recognized as a major part of this advocacy, as the success of a child’s education largely relies on the effective collaboration of stakeholders advocating every learner’s well-being.

Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon in support of UNODC standards

Based on the standards of UNODC, drug-abuse prevention is a significant motivator for children, young adults, and adults to contribute positively in their families, schools, workplace, and communities. Drug-abuse prevention at the school level focuses on the health and safety of children and youth, in a bid to encourage self-actualization that can lead to the realization of their full potential, prompting them to become productive members of society.

UNODC has found that developing a student’s personal and social skills can prevent drug use and alcohol abuse. For children aged 10 and below, programs centered on improving resistance skills and self-control have been shown to reduce general problem behaviors in and out of the classroom. Several other factors can also influence discouragement of substance abuse, such as students’ academic performance, commitment to school, and social opportunities.

To achieve these benchmarks, REX designed BPE as a three-tier implementation framework that will allow schools to conduct systematic assessments of their progress in the UNODC’s domains. BPE encourages schools to work with their stakeholders, students, parents, and community members in the planning and implementation of activities and interventions that are relevant to UNODC’s standards.

Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon as an exemplary school-community-family program for drug-abuse prevention

The BPE’s pilot implementation allowed learners to learn about drug-abuse prevention through the collaborative efforts of their teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders. In particular, parents reported feeling more engaged and knowledgeable of their children’s school activities and priorities after participating in the BPE process.

The participating schools demonstrated high levels of involvement and support, demonstrating their understanding of the BPE framework. REX wants to use this assistance to improve BPE advocacy, communications, and educational programs for additional schools across the country.

By doing this, REX was able to supplement UNODC’s guidelines for preventing drug use. The three pillars that supported the success of BPE’s first launch—valuing partnerships, highlighting the significance of successful parenting, and disseminating evidence-based preventative strategies—proved to be key. In an effort to make children and youth more resistant to drug use and to make a larger impact on BPE, REX is devoted to doing so.

This summer, Gatorade No Sugar fuels Filipinos’ progress

Summertime is a time for outdoor activities. Due to the heat, more Filipinos are taking advantage of the beautiful outdoors to relax with friends or pick up new hobbies and sports. But in the blazing heat, the body loses more than just water because essential minerals needed to maintain fundamental functions are depleted more quickly

Health professionals and medical journals caution that summertime increases the risk of dehydration. If dehydration is not treated right away, the consequences could be permanent and call for lifelong care. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) urges everyone to drink enough water and to monitor their sugar intake throughout the dry season.

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country, supports this call by encouraging Filipinos to fight dehydration while staying fit and active with Gatorade No Sugar. This electrolyte drink helps recover the body’s lost minerals without the unnecessary calories from sugar.

Electrolytes are key to one’s physical performance and overall well-being, as they help balance the amount of water and nutrients in the body. They regulate nervous, motor, and cardiovascular functions so that mind and body perform as they should.

“We lose more than water when we sweat, and we must take the necessary steps to continue nourishing our bodies to keep healthy. Gatorade No Sugar is packed with electrolytes and essential nutrients to replenish our bodies’ supply especially during the humid Philippine summer,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

More Filipinos will be able to enjoy being active this summer without jeopardizing their health thanks to Gatorade No Sugar. It is offered in top supermarkets, medicine stores, and convenience stores around the country.

In addition to producing and distributing popular brands like Gatorade, PCPPI also produces and sells Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Premier Purified Water. With the #SubwayGivesPack, Subway® and Mayani help the fight against malnutrition

In the Philippines, malnutrition is becoming increasingly challenging, especially among marginalized indigenous populations. Due to unequal access to nutritional food, 30% of Filipino children suffer from chronic malnutrition, which can cause cognitive impairments and long-term health effects.

In collaboration with Mayani, the Philippines’ fastest-growing farm-to-table platform, the multinational food chain Subway® began its #SubwayGivesPack initiative with the aim of reducing malnutrition.

In six regions of the archipelago, organized smallholder farmers and fisherfolk are the direct suppliers of food and catch to Mayani, which gives them access to a sustainable market with consumers such as leading grocery chains, international hotels, and restaurant groups. This collaboration will reinforce Subway®’s dedication to encouraging a healthy way of life and prevent hundreds of kids from going hungry.

The campaign aims to provide Mayani’s Aeta farmers community in Zambales with 200 nutrition packs containing healthy food items, such as fresh vegetables. These will give them better access to proper nutrition and improve their well-being, especially the undernourished children.

“We’re beyond excited to welcome Subway® into Mayani’s ecosystem of partners. It’s an important milestone for us to co-create change with a global brand and enable Subway® to localize and deepen its positive impact among communities,” said by JT Solis, the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Mayani, who led the structuring of the partnership deal.

Subway® recently celebrated its 26th year in the Philippines on the back of a strong reception by the Filipino market for fresher alternatives than the traditional fast-food offers. The campaign started to roll-out already across all Subway stores in the country.

Subway® has come a long way since our first franchise, and it continues to expand to multiple areas in the country thanks to the efforts of our Franchisees, Sandwich Artists and our loyal guests,” Jean Gagarino, Subway®’s Territory Manager shared.

The largest floating solar project in the world receives contracts from the DoE from SunAsia Energy and Blueleaf Energy

The Philippine government has awarded contracts to SunAsia Energy Inc. and Blueleaf Energy to construct and manage the largest floating solar project in the world, with a total capacity of more than 610.5 megawatts (MW).

The Department of Energy (DoE) has issued the first batch of Solar Energy Operating Contracts (SEOCs) for a total of 1.3 gigawatts (GW) in floating solar projects, marking a significant development in the nation’s energy sector.

During President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s state visit to Singapore in September 2022, Blueleaf Energy, a standalone portfolio company of Macquarie, signed a Letter of Intent (LOI). In the Philippines, the firm promised to considerably increase its investments in sustainable infrastructure.

In partnership with SunAsia Energy, Blueleaf Energy is jointly developing the large-scale floating solar facility on Laguna Lake, spanning the growing cities of Calamba, Sta. Rosa and Cabuyao, and the towns of Bay and Victoria.

During the contract turnover ceremonies, Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla reiterated his promise to strengthen the renewable energy sector and declared the DoE’s strong support for the commercialization of floating solar facilities as an emerging technology.

Australian Ambassador HK Yu PSM and Singaporean Ambassador Gerard Ho Wei Hong were among those who attended the event at the DoE office in Makati City. The program echoed the need to accelerate the realization of the country’s decarbonization targets by 2040.

Raghuram Natarajan, CEO of Blueleaf Energy, said that “as an active investor in sustainable infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region, we believe the Philippines holds great potential to add significant renewable energy capacity to its energy mix and at the same time delivering green energy at an affordable cost compared to fossil fuels.”

The recent announcement of the removal of foreign ownership restrictions, Mr. Natarajan said, “is an important step in attracting the much-needed foreign direct investments in Philippine Renewable Energy (RE) sector to accelerate the energy transition for meeting the country’s decarbonization and net zero targets.”

After the signing of the SEOCs, Blueleaf Energy’s top executive said his company would push for cooperation among public and private stakeholders to ensure the successful development of the project.

This will “not only contribute to the country’s RE goals, but also spark green job growth locally during construction and the long-term operations of these floating solar projects, enable local supply chains through the manufacturing of critical components and bring about notable benefits to the local community,” Mr. Natarajan said.

The SEOC is a testament to the viability of this emerging technology. Tetchi Capellan, president and CEO of SunAsia Energy, noted that “land use is becoming a big issue for renewables.”

“People are worrying about competing uses of land, and in some markets, you might struggle to find land,” Capellan said. “There is a strong incentive to build on water as the Philippines gears up for an ambitious 46 GW solar energy installations in 2040 and at the same time, increase power supply in the country.”

She said that this first 610MW floating solar project “is our collective legacy, our immeasurable contribution to the body of knowledge in the renewable energy space and to the growing solar energy installations worldwide.”

“Once built, we are certain that it will stand as one of the engineering wonders of the world. It will capture the imagination of developers, it will be published in multiple journals, shared in social media, visited by hundreds of practitioners, and studied by academics,” Capellan added.

Since 2019, SunAsia Energy has been operating a testbed on Laguna Lake to study the behavior of waves, the movement of wind, the intensity of the sun, as well as the variability of the temperature in the locality. The wealth of experience has contributed to the growing knowledge of floating solar panels on the lake.

SunAsia Energy further explained that like land-based systems, floating solar panels generate electricity from the sun’s rays. But the bodies of water that these farms rest on also help to cool the panels, allowing them to be more efficient than terrestrial solar, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.

Solar-on-water will definitely boost clean power as the world races to cut carbon emissions. Massive solar farms can now be found atop bodies of water in South Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, and Portugal.

Developing solar-on-water projects, in the country’s largest lake, will help achieve not only the government’s ambitious decarbonization target but also much needed power to run industries, light homes, and energize cities.

More importantly, it will be a legacy of the Philippines to the global renewable energy space, SunAsia Energy said.

In the last two decades, Blueleaf Energy has developed and built almost 2 GW of solar capacity across the globe, including 250 MW in the Philippines. It currently has over 7 GW of solar, wind and storage projects project pipeline across the Asia Pacific region.

Since its founding in 2013, SunAsia Energy, a national developer of renewable solar energy, has collaborated with numerous organizations to create solar projects, such as the 20 MWp Dagupan solar project in Pangasinan and the 60 MWp Toledo solar project in Cebu.
